CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.
In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Duncan Forrester.Duncan is a globally experienced Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and consultant who's worked with many of the automotive industry's most famous brands. He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. With that unique experience, he started the first communication consultancy specifically supporting start-up and electric vehicle brands, initially creating the PR and Communications function for INEOS Automotive and their Grenadier, and then as Chief Communications Officer for Volta Trucks. And more recently in the same role for Automobili Pininfarina, with their all-electric Battista hypercar – one of the fastest and most powerful road cars ever built. And he's now working with the electrification of the vast Ultra Class mining haul trucks, so he really has worked on the decarbonisation of vehicles at every end of the automotive spectrum. In our conversation we talk about how he knew from an early age that he wanted to get into the automotive industry and he demonstrated great effort and persistence to make that happen. When opportunities arose, he had his own north star which helped him to decline some that weren't aligned. As a result he has amassed a significant amount of experience in the specialised field of launching startup EV brands.Paul Flitter and Paul Kirby had both mentioned Duncan in their recent episodes, highlighting what a supportive mentor he is. Fyll jättegärna i vårt feedback-formulär.
There's been a growing uptick in corporations ditching their green ambitions. Volvo Cars has abandoned its ambitious target to sell only electric cars by 2030 amid a global slowdown in growth for battery-powered vehicles. Sweden has recently scrapped their aviation tax on airline tickets in a bid to reduce prices and boost availability. Griffith Business School associate professor Dr Rob Hales says more businesses have decided to keep their targets quiet amid accusations of green-washing. "Green-hushing is keeping your targets and keeping the mechanisms to try and get there a bit quiet.
Mots-Clés : citoyens, riches, monde, résultat, vaste enquête, mondiale, banque, suisse, UBS, sentiment, richesse, population, millionnaires, dollars, population, information, site, modèle, SUV Q8 Etron, succès, escompté, clients, marché allemand, raisons budgétaires, prime à l'achat, importante, seuil de rentabilité, résultat, coûts salariaux, stratégie, direction, preuve, marché automobile, gamme, bon marché, départ, sol belge, propriétaire, chinois, marque, Volvo, taxes douanières, imposé, États-Unis, Union européenne, Premier ministre, Alexander De Croo, chancelier, allemand, Forest, direction, restructurer, Konrad Adenauer, voisin. Volvo Cars has an ambitious goal of going all electric by 2030. But, according to CEO Jim Rowan, the EV push won't be linear. Major population centers are way ahead of rural communities, both in the U.S. and globally when it comes to things like charging infrastructure, critical for the move away from gas-powered cars. Rowan became CEO of Volvo Cars in 2022 after a long career in tech, including stints as the CEO of Dyson and COO of Blackberry. He says Volvo's market position as a premium brand gives it a distinct advantage in a crowded field. On this episode of Leadership Next, Alan and Michal talk to Rowan about innovation in automotive, China's EV-manufacturing infrastructure, and Volvo's 70-year history bringing Scandinavian design sensibility to the U.S. car market. Leadership Next is powered by Deloitte.

EV startup Polestar was recently flirting with bankruptcy. The company, which started as an engineering team modifying Volvos for racing in the late 2000s, was spun out of Volvo in October 2017 as a standalone brand focusing on electric cars.Last November, Polestar was looking at a $1.3 billion shortfall when Geely Holding and Volvo Cars stepped up to fill the gap and keep the company above water until 2025. During that time, it hoped to get the Polestar 3 and 4, crossover models with higher margins, out the door.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
Welcome back for another fascinating episode of the Talent Intelligence Collective podcast! In episode 29, your regular hosts Alan Walker, Alison Etridge and Toby Culshaw have an enlightening discussion with Megan Reif, Talent Intelligence Lead at Volvo Cars. Kicking things off, Toby provides an intriguing news roundup spanning topics like the rise of tech hubs in Canada, AI proliferation in HR roles, and the transition towards skills-based organizations. The trends spark thoughtful debate around data architecture challenges in HR, attracting technical talent to people-focused roles, and the complexity of fully adopting skills-based frameworks. Shifting gears to our interview with Megan Reif, we uncover her eclectic career journey spanning academia, international development, recruiting and more. A recurring theme is Megan's insatiable curiosity to dig deeper, learn something new and challenge assumptions with data. Megan provides a fascinating window into the world of automotive manufacturing talent. We explore the intersection of software and hardware, blending agile and waterfall development approaches, and massive talent ecosystems including R&D, factories, suppliers and beyond. Megan emphasizes the highly technical skills involved in areas often dismissed as “blue collar,” like welders who will drive the green transition. On talent issues, Megan explains how Sweden's largest private employer collaborates with industry consortia, universities and government around long-term skills gaps like electricians and battery talent needs. We debate how to better expose youth to the exciting real-world opportunities in science, tech and manufacturing. Megan also shares thoughts on balancing national policies around freelance passions, labor market alignment and managed immigration. Throughout the wide-ranging discussion, Megan underscores how she sees boundless potential for talent intelligence to bring context, challenge assumptions and transform workforce decisions. Her wisdom and optimism leave us delighted to have her perspective, with much still left to explore in future episodes! Until next time, stay intelligent folks, and don't forget to share the podcast! ** Don't forget to say hi to our wonderful sponsors → Stratigens! **

Today, I'm talking to Jim Rowan, the CEO of Volvo Cars. Now, Jim's only been at Volvo for a short time. He took over in 2022 after a decades-long career in the consumer electronics industry. Before Volvo, his two longest stints were at BlackBerry, whose QNX software is used in tons of cars, and then at Dyson, which once tried and failed to make an electric car. Jim and I talked a lot about how that unique experience has influenced how he thinks about the transformational changes happening in the world of cars. For Volvo, the stakes are high. The company has pledged to be all-electric by the end of the decade, and Jim is also making some very different bets on software and revenue than the rest of the car industry. Jim's view is that automakers are undergoing three major shifts all at once: electrification, autonomy, and direct-to-consumer sales. With Volvo, Jim is trying to steer the ship through these changes and come out an EV-only carmaker on the other end. Starting a career with the ambition of becoming a medical doctor and ending up a technical leader for a major automaker might seem an unlikely path, but for Anders Sjögren, who leads data and AI innovation projects for Volvo Cars, it was a perfect trajectory. On this episode, Anders joins Sam and Shervin to explain the ways the carmaker uses data and artificial intelligence to inform manufacturing — ensuring that parts are made consistently and as efficiently as possible — as well as driver experience and safety. He also outlines some specific ways smart technology keeps drivers alert and aware of conditions around them and describes Volvo's approach to technology-driven innovation.
