On today's episode of Speaking Of… College of Charleston, Nick Plasmati, associate director of marketing and academic programs in the Honors College, speaks with Sydney Pearson, a junior majoring in systems engineering in the Honors College, about her summer internship. Sydney interned as a project manager for Mercedes-Benz Vans at its production plant headquarters in Charleston. She spent time developing data-driven tools for MBV employees across the world to make the production process more efficient.Sydney says the soft skills she learned from her colleagues and mentors at Mercedes-Benz will benefit her personally and professionally in the future. For CofC students who are interested in pursuing an internship, she offers this advice:“The biggest thing I would say, is that it's never too early to start looking for an internship. As soon as you get to college, you have the opportunity to intern at different companies. Never say no to an opportunity. The biggest thing that I would tell any new intern is to just go for it!”Featured on this Episode:Sydney Pearson is a Systems Engineering major and Mathematics minor from Charlotte, NC. She has always had a passion for leadership and mentorship, and exercises both of these activities through various campus organizations like the SSME Ambassador Program, Charleston Fellows, the Engineering Club and Army ROTC. Outside of the classroom, Sydney enjoys travelling, long days on the beach, exercising and exploring Charleston.
The Apprentice winner Joseph Valente on the push to electrifying transport networks and a focus on sustainabilityThe majority (70%) of small businesses in the UK are looking to make 2022 the year in which they put the focus firmly on going green and the same percentage are confident they will achieve their goals for the next 12 months, playing their part in helping the government reach its carbon emission targets. With more than three quarters (77%) of SMEs saying resolving to develop a sustainable business model is a top goal for the next 12 months and almost two thirds (66%) also putting the emphasis on digitising their business, according to Mercedes-Benz Vans research, there is a real appetite to make changes at the start of a new year.Indeed, 61% of small business owners plan to switch to electric vehicles this year, with more than half (54%) seeking to electrify their transport networks before the end of 2022.The main drivers behind these resolutions for the year ahead are the many business opportunities itprovides (41%), how it will help change the negative impact businesses have on the environment (39%) and customer expectation for them to become more eco-friendly (39%).However, SME owners say they need help with 37% believing there is not enough public funding to help adapt to a more sustainable business model. This makes 40% of them feel unsupported by the government, 35% feel at a disadvantage and leaves 26% frustrated.Small businesses are concerned by how their sustainability is perceived with 15% saying they have already been questioned by customers about their eco credentials while 61% of owners would cease working with a partner or supplier if they were not true to their environmental promises and half are worried about the sustainability credentials of their partners / suppliers.Joseph Valente, the 2015 winner of The Apprentice, is perfectly placed to answer SME owners' questions and provide reassurance because since being helped in creating his business by Sir Alan Sugar he has been advising companies around the country how they can achieve their business objectives and therefore produce the results they need to flourish and grow. With a new series of The Apprentice underway, Joseph can explain what you need to succeed and can cast his eye over the runners and riders entering Sir Alan's boardroom this time around and who he thinks is most deserving of following in his footsteps. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. RIVIAN IS CLOSE TO RAISING FUNDS AT $25 BILLION VALUATION "Rivian Automotive, the electric-truck startup backed by Amazon.com and Ford, is close to raising a new round of funding valuing it at about $25 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Several existing Rivian investors are participating in the round, which will raise several billion dollars, the people added, asking not to be identified because the matter is private." reports Autoblog: "The new funds would add to the $6 billion Rivian has already raised to date, which makes it one of the most-well capitalized electric vehicle makers. Rivian's 3,000 employees are split between sites in California, metro Detroit and a production facility in Normal, Ill." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/06/rivian-funding-valuation-25-billion/ GM WILL BUILD HONDA, ACURA ELECTRIC CARS IN US AND MEXICO "Automotive News reported Wednesday that GM will build two electric cars for Honda in the near future, citing sources close to the matter. Honda declined to comment directly on the vehicles and manufacturing locations, but said it "looks forward to sharing new information on our North American electrification strategy later this year."" according to CNET: "According to the original report's sources, however, the US automaker will build a new Honda EV in Mexico while an Acura EV will find a manufacturing home in the US. The mysterious Honda EV will supposedly roll off the same assembly line as the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox at the automaker's Ramos Arizpe plant. The Acura EV, meanwhile, will find a home at GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee facility." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gm-honda-acura-electric-cars-us-mexico/ CATL AIMS FOR 230 GWH PRODUCTION IN 2021 "CATL wants to massively expand its production capacities for battery cells, to 230 GWh this year and to 1,200 GWh in 2025. In parallel, the Chinese battery manufacturer is aiming to expand to Japan, Indonesia, the USA and Europe." writes electrive: "The most recent annual statistics are from 2019, a year in which the Chinese company reached 32.5 GWh. With that capacity, CATL topped the list of largest battery cell manufacturers in 2019, ahead of Japan’s Panasonic (28.1 GWh) and South Korea’s LG Chem (12.4 GWh). At CATL, the expansion of production capacity is to be accompanied by expansion to Japan, Indonesia, the USA and Europe, with Germany playing a key role in the European market. This is marked by the construction of CATL’s first production facility outside China, which has started in Erfurt. The ground was broken at the Germam building site in October 2019, with completion scheduled for 2022. The battery cells produced there will be supplied to BMW and Volkswagen" https://www.electrive.com/2021/01/06/catl-takes-aim-for-a-230-gwh-production-capacity-for-2021/ PRESIDENT OF PANASONIC TALKS TESLA 4680 BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION "When Tesla hosted its Battery Day event, it seemed it may be a very long time before 4680 cells would actually be produced and put into cars. Now, we're learning that wasn't the case. It's only been a few months, and Panasonic is already preparing to make the cells." according to InsideEVs: "Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga recently provided some details about Tesla's proprietary, in-house 4680 cells. He also noted that even though Tesla will eventually produce its own 4680 cells, it will not be competing with Panasonic, its primary battery supplier. This is because, as long as Tesla continues its forward momentum, it will need many more cells that it can produce on its own." Kazuhiro Tsuga said: “We have begun development of a new automotive battery, the 4680, for Tesla in the United States. The electrode structure is difficult because of its high capacity. The electrode structure is difficult because of its large capacity. We will make prototypes in Japan and establish a manufacturing method. High reliability is one of our strengths. There is no concern that Tesla will become a competitor (although Tesla is promoting in-house production of the battery).” Comment - GearsOfWoe • 12 hours ago Interesting QA/QC program. Acquire a few small battery-related companies and threaten to bring production in-house if Panasonic fails to provide the absolute best batteries possible. https://insideevs.com/news/464582/tesla-4680-battery-cell-production-panasonic/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles UK AUTOMOTIVE LOOKS TO GREEN RECOVERY "The UK new car market fell by almost a third (-29.4%) in 2020...It was, however, a bumper year for battery and plug-in hybrid electric cars, which together accounted for more than one in 10 registrations – up from around one in 30 in 2019. Demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) grew by 185.9% to 108,205 units, while registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose 91.2% to 66,877. Encouragingly, there is room for further growth as most of these registrations (68%) were for company cars, indicating that private buyers need stronger incentives to make the switch, as well as more investment in charging infrastructure, especially public on-street charging. More than 100 plug-in car models are now available to UK buyers, and manufacturers are scheduled to bring more than 35 to market in 2021 – more than the number of either petrol or diesel new models planned for the year. When Tesla announced the price last week and started sales, it said deliveries would take place this month. China is Tesla’s largest market after the U.S., and analysts are predicting the nation will account for a bigger slice of its sales and earnings going forward. “Based on the order intake and our production plan, we have adjusted the Model Y delivery time of latest orders to the second quarter,” a Tesla representative said Thursday via WeChat." https://www.autonews.com/china/tesla-prolongs-model-y-delivery-times-citing-order-intake JAMES MAY CHECKS OUT THE LOTUS EVIJA "DriveTribe’s latest video shows May taking a detailed look at the all-electric Lotus Evija hypercar. You’ll likely know by now that it makes 2,000 horsepower (1,491.4 kilowatts) thanks to an electric motor at each corner. Lotus was unsurprisingly tight-lipped about acceleration figures, but the Grand Tour presenter did reveal that he was told it could sprint to 60 mph (96.5 km/h) in considerably less than three seconds, and 180 mph (289.6 km/h) in less than nine seconds." according to Motor1.com: "as each wheel of the Evija has its own electric motor, the best place for the battery pack is actually behind the driver where you’d expect it in a normal supercar or hypercar. Placing the batteries under the floor – as you’d expect in more pedestrian EVs – wouldn't actually provide optimal weight distribution." https://www.motor1.com/news/464619/james-may-checks-out-lotus-evija/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news ENEL X SIGNED STRATEGIC AGREEMENT WITH WELTMEISTER Following the earlier launch of its first commercial office dedicated to e-Mobility in China, Enel X will support the development of Weltmeister’s charging infrastructure at global level, thus promoting the export of EVs as well as accelerating the development of overseas markets. Enel X and Weltmeister will carry out an in-depth electric mobility cooperation as Enel X will be providing smart charging solutions and one-stop after-sales services for Weltmeister Auto products exported to overseas markets, such as the European Union and Southeast Asia, as well as ensuring that relevant charging facilities meet the requirements of local charging standards, policies, and regulations. Furthermore, the two companies will explore the integration of V2G technology in Europe, allowing customers to lower the cost of ownership of an electric vehicle while offering a potential backup power source. https://www.enelx.com/en/news-and-media/press/2020/12/-enel-x-signed-strategic-agreement-with-weltmeister-to-boost-electric-vehicle-exports- AMAZON'S WEMBLEY STATION ROLLS OUT FLEET OF 100 ELECTRIC DELIVERY VANS "An Amazon delivery station in Wembley has rolled out a fleet of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles to make deliveries. The online giant has revved up 100 vans as part of its Climate Pledge, Amazon’s commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050." says Kilburn Times.co.uk: "In August Amazon announced plans to add more than 1,800 electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans to its EU delivery fleet, including more than 500 in the UK. In the Wembley delivery station, small independent logistics companies also have access to the zero-emission vehicles to make deliveries to Amazon customers, helping to save tens of thousands of metric tons of carbon." https://www.kilburntimes.co.uk/news/amazon-wembley-launches-mercedes-benz-fleet-6877408 QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SEEN AHEAD OF DEBUT "Hyundai’s recently launched IONIQ sub-brand is about to unveil its first production model. It’ll take the form of an all-electric hatchback with a design inspired by the Concept 45. " says Motor1.com, meet the IONIQ5: "we expect the production Ioniq 5 to take after the Concept 45 with its square-shaped LED headlights and somewhat boxy overall appearance. he Ioniq 5 will ride on Hyundai’s dedicated EV platform called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Not much is known about the powertrain’s capabilities at this point but we know for a fact Hyundai’s new architecture will support the so-called vehicle-to-load (V2L) function where the EV can supply electric energy to outside sources. The company says the system should be able to supply up to 3.5 kW of power and provide enough energy for a midsize AC and a 55-inch TV to work for 24 hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/459883/hyundai-ioniq-5-spied-teased/ VW ID.6 ON TARGET FOR 2023 "After the ID.3 and ID.4, one of the next additions to the ID range of electric cars is expected to be the ID.6 which will reportedly be available as both a sedan and a wagon. " says InsideEVs: " This model will apparently debut in the fourth quarter of 2023, and even though it will mostly be aimed at China where sedans are still a status symbol, there is a high likelihood that it will be sold elsewhere too. What’s especially cool about the ID.6 is that even though it will occupy roughly the same footprint on the road as a Passat, it will actually offer the interior room of a vehicle from a class above. This is a trick that VW is pulling off very well with the ID.3 and ID.4 already and we can only imagine how much space they will manage to offer in a larger vehicle. The ID.6 will be underpinned by the same MEB platform, come with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive base setup or more powerful dual-motor variants (including a possible performance-minded GTX variant) and it is said to have a range of as much as 700 km or 431 miles on a single charge (with its largest available battery pack)." https://insideevs.com/news/459533/volkswagen-id6-sedan-wagon-here-q4-2023/ MERCEDES-BENZ VANS ANNOUNCES NEXT-GENERATION ESPRINTER Mercedes-Benz Vans is accelerating down its road to full electrification and will make all of its model ranges available with a battery-electric drivetrain with a focus on reliability, quality and optimized total cost of ownership (TCO). To create even greater added value for customers in the future, Mercedes-Benz Vans developed the new Electric Versatility Platform for the large van segment. This innovative e-drive platform will be the technical basis for the next-generation eSprinter. The core elements of the new platform are three modules that enable the greatest possible flexibility in the development and design of different body types. This allows for new eSprinter body configurations previously only available with combustion engines. Following the eVito and eSprinter, Mercedes-Benz Vans will ultimately cover the battery-electric range in all commercial transporter segments with the future eCitan. https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko.xhtml?oid=48383169 EV VERSION OF MG3 COMING 2021 MG is going to launch a third EV for the UK, following the MG ZS EV and the MG5 Estate. The MG3 EV will be an all electric supermini at the bottom end of the range. It's due for launch in Q4 2021 and be based on the same size as the MG3 piston car. The MG ZS EV has a 44.5kWh battery which might be too big for this car so perhaps MG will ship with smaller. But if they can squeeze it in, it would have a larger battery than a MINI or Honda E. A range of 150 miles would be sufficient for that class of car. The key is price and if they can bring it in low enough to encourage more people to drive electric. BRITISHVOLT CHOOSES SITE FOR GIGAFACTORY Britishvolt has selected Blyth, Northumberland as the site of its first battery Gigafactory. By the final phase of the project in 2027 it will be employing up to 3000 highly skilled people, producing over 300,000 lithium-ion batteries for the UK automotive industry. It will further provide up to 5000 jobs in the wider supply chain. Britishvolt's Gigafactory is widely regarded as being strategically important for the UK automotive industry in order for it to maintain competitive advantage as we accelerate towards an increasingly electrified future. Quarter four of 2023 has been targeted as the start of production in Britain's first gigaplant. CHARLOTTE CHOSEN AS LOCATION FOR ARRIVAL HEADQUARTERS IN US "Arrival, the UK based electric bus and truck startup, has chosen Charlotte, North Carolina as the site for its US headquarters. The company said in a press release this week it will add 150 employees and invest $3 million to establish its corporate outpost in America." says CleanTechnica: "Arrival has developed a standardized battery electric platform is says can accommodate a wide range of vehicles. It also plans to build its products in local minifactories located close to its customers. The first of its US minifactories will be located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, which is only about 30 miles south of Charlotte. Arrival has been selected by UPS to build 10,000 delivery vans in the UK and left the door open for an additional 10,000 in the future. The company has attracted investments from Hyundai and KIA, two companies who are also providing financial support to Canoo, a West Coast EV startup that has also developed its own highly scalable EV platform". https://cleantechnica.com/2020/12/10/charlotte-chosen-as-location-for-arrival-headquarters-in-us/ VOLVO CARS TO PRODUCE ELECTRIC MOTORS IN SWEDEN Volvo Cars will assemble electric motors at its powertrain plant in Skövde, Sweden, and plans to establish complete in-house e-motor production by mid-decade. It will invest 700 million SEK (€68.2 million) to this end in coming years. Volvo Cars announced earlier this year that it is investing significantly in the in-house design and development of e-motors for the next generation of Volvo cars. With the planned investments in Skövde, it now takes the first steps towards in-house e-motor assembly and manufacturing. PEGATRON REVEALS LARGE INCREASE IN TESLA MODEL 3 PARTS ORDERS "Another sign Tesla is planning for a big year in 2021 is a recent report that a parts supplier has seen a big increase in orders from the automaker." reportd Drive Tesla Candada: "Pegatron manufactures the central control system for the Model 3. According to sources who spoke with DIGITIMES, the electronics manufacturing company has an usually large increase in orders for those parts. While it is unclear when or where these parts will be used, there is a good chance many of them will go to Giga Shanghai. Tesla is targeting to produce 550,000 vehicles in 2021 at Giga Shanghai alone, with more than half of those being the Model 3." https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-3/pegatron-reveals-large-increase-in-tesla-model-3-parts-orders/ ARTEMIS GOES INDEPENDENT "Audi’s Artemis task force for highly automated electric cars has now been spun off into an independent company. Alexander Hitzinger, managing director of the new Artemis GmbH, made the announcement on LinkedIn." according to electrive: "Audi, under new CEO Markus Duesmann, had established the Artemis project at the end of May. The task force was to develop a “groundbreaking” model “quickly and without bureaucracy.” The highly efficient electric car is to hit the road as early as 2024." https://www.electrive.com/2020/12/10/artemis-goes-independent/ BOLLINGER UPDATE THEIR DESIGNS "The reveal of the production-spec Rivian R1T and R1S, as well as the unwrapping of the Tesla Cybertruck, might have pushed Michigan-based Bollinger's B1 and B2 electric SUV and pickup out of the limelight. Nevertheless, the company's still tinkering away at its boxy models, and Bollinger's latest images give us a better clue as to what the saleable B1 and B2 will ultimately look like." says MotorTrend: "The B1 and B2 benefit from a taller belt line, which helps lower the models' visual mass for a less top-heavy look. The updated design nets more passenger headroom and a bigger frunk. The entire greenhouse is taller, too, while the B2 now features a bed that's no longer integrated with the cab" https://www.motortrend.com/news/bollinger-b1-b2-ev-truck-suv-production-design/ OCTOPUS ENERGY'S ELECTRIC JUICE NETWORK HAILED AS 'BEST EV INNOVATION' "Octopus Energy has been awarded the 'Best EV innovation' award at the Driving Electric awards for its simplified EV charging system, the Electric Juice Network." says EV Research": Electric Juice Network users can benefit from a single card that is usable at any participating charger and from the costs of the charge sent directly to their home energy bill, making it faster and easier to get around. The service is open to all drivers of electric cars so that everyone can benefit from this new and more convenient way of charging - whether or not they are already one of Octopus Energy's 1.8 million customers." https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/22581/octopus-energys-electric-juice-network-hailed-as-best-ev-innovation You can listen to all 946 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste interviews Rich Webber, General Manage of Product and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Vans USA & Nicolette Lambrechts, General Manage of Sales Operations for Mercedes-Benz Vans USA after the cross USA road trip. This past year during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve been faced with unique challenges that have fundamentally disrupted our daily life and necessitated a variety of creative solutions from our working life to our time off. Mercedes-Benz Vans has jumped in to create a unique business strategy, taking business to the streets. This month Mercedes-Benz Vans Rich Webber, General Manager of Marketing and Nicolette Lambrechts, General Manager of Sales Operations are embarking on a cross-country road trip in a Winnebago Sprinter and Metris Getaway covering 6,489 miles, 21 states and three coastlines. The team will use this rare opportunity to reconnect in person with dealerships, influencers and business partners in various markets, which has not been possible in recent months due to the pandemic. The road trip will help to provide support for product, dealers and internal teams to help find a new path to success. They’ll be living in and hosting meetings out of the Metris Getaway and Winnebago Sprinter with a tailgate setup to allow for social distanced outdoor meetings, living out the trends that we’ve been seeing within the vans segment. Since March, there’s been an increase in demand from Van, RV and Parcel Van buyers looking for alternative solutions for their personal lives and businesses. We’re continuing to see customers embrace the #vanlife trend with rising interest in dual work/play vans, adventure vans and even retailers looking for pop up store applications. The RV industry has seen the highest demand in over four decades, along with a shift in the demographic with more than 50% of post-COVID business being first-time RV buyers of a younger demographic and more late-career RV purchases as an additional vehicle, rather than the typical empty-nester retirement purchase. We’d like to offer you a special opportunity to speak with Rich and Nicolette on their cross-country journey to learn more about our current product offerings, sales and trends we’ve noticed with Vans this past year. Show #878 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th August 2020. TESLA, THE FBI AND $1M HACK ATTACK "Earlier this week, the FBI arrested a 27-year-old Russian citizen for attempting to carry out a ransomware attack against a US company. It turns out that company was Tesla" says Autoblog: "Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov traveled to the U.S. and contacted a Russian speaking, non-U.S. citizen who was working at the Tesla Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. After meeting with that individual, Kriuchkov allegedly proposed a deal. He would pay the employee $1 million to deliver malware to computer systems at the Gigafactory. Kriuchkov and his associates allegedly planned to extract data from the network and threaten to make it public if Tesla didn’t pay a ransom." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/29/tesla-fbi-ransomware-attack-nevada-gigafactory/ LUCID TEASES POSSIBLE WORLD RECORD 1/4-MILE WITH AIR DREAM EDITION "Lucid has released a teaser for its first sedan, the Air, indicating that it may have set a new electric vehicle world record before its highly-anticipated unveiling event on September 9th." according to Joey at Teslarati: "The video did not reveal any specific time, but the quickly ticking timer that appears in the teaser goes as low as 10.48 seconds, but it is doubtful that this time is the lowest that the vehicle achieved. Lucid used the same style of video for the Air’s range unveiling, and that video only went as high as 441 miles. Lucid revealed the Air had 517 miles of range just four days later. The current world record for a quarter-mile for an electric sedan is held by the Tesla Model S, which completed a drag race in just 10.452 seconds at the Tulsa Raceway Park on May 17th, 2020. The Model S used Ludicrous Mode and the “Cheetah Stance” to record this time." The unveiling date is 9th of the 9th. So, 9.9 seconds? https://www.teslarati.com/lucid-teases-quarter-mile-world-record/ LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT IS SELLING ITS FLEET OF BMW I3 VEHICLES "Thereafter, BMW won a bid with LAPD to supply one hundred BMW i3s each year for three years starting in 2016. Fitted to the i3s were the base 22kWh battery pack, the Deka World interior package, and the standard 19" aluminum wheels." reports InsideEVs: "CBS Los Angeles reported some i3s that accumulated just several hundred miles making the whole proposition look more ineffective. If LAPD had around a dozen of these vehicles, the story probably would never have been brought to light, but LAPD had 200, $45,000 electric cars sitting in a parking garage collecting dust. New Century BMW, the dealer that handled the leases initially, is currently selling them as CPO models. some are priced around $15,000, unbeatable for an under warranty, lightly-driven electric car. The only issue that one may see is that some of these i3s were sitting, presumably for prolonged periods." https://insideevs.com/news/441238/los-angeles-police-fleet-bmw-i3-being-sold/ AMAZON ORDERS OVER 1,800 ELECTRIC VANS FROM MERCEDES "Amazon orders more than 1,800 electric transporters from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The order includes around 600 eVito and more than 1,200 eSprinter delivery vans, with Amazon expecting deliveries to begin this year. This is the largest order for electric vehicles from Mercedes transporter unit to date." according to electrive: "The internet retailer is reportedly expecting 10,000 electric delivery vans to come through Rivian, a US start-up, by 2022. The total order is for no less than 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. In Europe, Amazon has relied on established manufacturers such as Mercedes. In Munich, they use 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito. Amazon recently added 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day at its distribution centre in Essen together with a Mercedes partner." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/28/amazon-orders-over-1800-electric-vans-from-mercedes-benz/ RIMAC AUTOMOBILI WELCOMES NICO ROSBERG "Rimac Automobili has welcomed 2016 Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg to the family, as he joined the team in Croatia to customise his personal C_Two and test an advanced prototype. Nico’s announcement was captured in a video on his YouTube channel. Nico is one of just 150 people worldwide that will own a C_Two, having ordered his car in early 2019, following a viewing with the founder and CEO, Mate Rimac. Just recently, Nico visited the team – now numbering more than 700 – in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia, to decide on the bespoke configuration of his car, which will be delivered along with other customer cars in 2021." 4 liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous electric motors placed at each wheel. 400 miles range. 258 mph top speed. 0-60 mph 1.85 secs with a one foot rolout. https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/08/rimac-automobili-welcomes-nico-rosberg-to-the-family-of-owners THE FIRST 700 VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CARS LAND IN NORWAY "Volkswagen has confirmed that the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars have landed in Norway as deliveries of the important new electric vehicle are about to start. It has been in production since November of last year and they have manufactured thousands of them while they completed the vehicle’s software. The result is that they plan to start deliveries with a pretty large inventory in the coming weeks." writes electrek: "Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s head of marketing, confirmed that today by sharing footage of the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars landing in Norway, which is expected to be an important market for the electric car:" https://electrek.co/2020/08/28/vw-id-3-electric-cars-land-norway/ PANAMA CANCELS ORDER FOR DIESEL BUSES, WILL PURCHASE 195 ELECTRIC BUSES INSTEAD "MiBus has decided to cancel an order for 160 new diesel buses and purchase electric buses from BYD instead. In total, MiBus will spend $35 million to purchase 195 medium size electric buses for use in Panama City." ays CleanTechnica: "In a telephone interview with the Panama Star, Luis Campaña, manager of MiBus, explained that the year long triual period demonstrated the value of regenerative braking and that the buses air conditioning systems were capable of managing the hot, humid environment of Panama. he MiBus representative clarified that his company originally thought of “presenting a proposal for the purchase of 35 medium or 10 meter electric buses, plus 160 diesel buses to partially replace the existing fleet,” but came to believe “it would be better to expand the framework and acquire 195 electric buses .”" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/29/panama-cancels-order-for-diesel-buses-will-purchase-195-electric-buses-instead/ WIND AND SOLAR ARE 30-50% CHEAPER THAN THOUGHT "Electricity generated from wind and solar is 30-50% cheaper than previously thought, according to newly published UK government figures. The new estimates of the “levelised cost” of electricity, published this week by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), show that renewables are much cheaper than expected in the previous iteration of the report, published in 2016." reports Simon Evans writing for CarbonBrief: "The new report is the government’s first public admission of the dramatic reductions in renewable costs in recent years. In 2013, the UK government estimated that an offshore windfarm opening in 2025 would generate electricity for £140/MWh. By 2016, this was revised down by 24%, to £107/MWh. The latest estimate puts the cost at just £57/MWh, another 47% reduction. The new estimates include similarly dramatic reductions for onshore wind and solar, with levelised costs in 2025 now thought to be some 50% lower than expected." BEIS now expects offshore wind to become cheaper than onshore by the mid-2030s. This is primarily due to much larger turbine sizes, reaching 20 megawatts (MW) by 2040, up from 9MW today. https://www.carbonbrief.org/wind-and-solar-are-30-50-cheaper-than-thought-admits-uk-government You can listen to all 877 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #694 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 11th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Lots of new Porsche Taycan videos hit the internet at the same time, so I'm guessing an embargo could have just lifted. The highlight for me is Jay Leno, with an almost 40minute video. Also look out for DragTimes and Top Gear. NISSAN LEAF EXPERIENCED A 73% SALES DROP IN JAPAN IN JANUARY 2020 "Nissan has a rough time these days as a company, because weak sales significantly affected its business. The Nissan LEAF model in particular also is not shining anymore. In January, LEAF sales in Japan were extraordinarily low - 753 units, which is 73% less than a year ago (2,833) and the lowest level for January ever." reports InsideEVs: "It's hard to judge what the year 2020 will bring, but it does not look optimistic. The cumulative LEAF sales in Japan amounted to 135,683. On the North American front, Nissan released a short note that - as in the case of many other manufacturers, it - "is moving from monthly to quarterly sales reporting in the U.S. market". It means that we will not be able to track the results more often than once a quarter." https://insideevs.com/news/397448/nissan-leaf-sales-january-2020/ MERCEDES EQS SPIED IN TRAFFIC HIDING SWOOPY SHAPE UNDER CAMO "Although the B-Class Electric Drive and SLS AMG Electric Drive preceded it, the EQC will go down in history as Mercedes’ first mass-market electric vehicle. It kick-started Daimler’s newly founded “EQ” sub-brand of zero-emissions models, which is bound to include everything from an entry-level EQA to this – the mighty EQS." reports Adrian for Motor1.com: "The S-Class of EVs was spotted by walkoARTvideos on YouTube recently undergoing testing in Germany during a cold day, and while it still had plenty of camouflage on its swoopy body, there are still some details we can make out. Seeing as how the new Maybach S-Class has been spied with pop-out door handles, we’re a bit surprised the EQS in production guise will stick with a conventional setup. Making them flush with the door panel would’ve made the car not only look sleeker when viewed from the side, but probably slightly more aerodynamic and therefore more efficient. While the Vision EQS concept before it had cameras, it looks like its road-going counterpart will stick to traditional side mirrors. As a side note, cameras are already legal in Japan and Europe on cars like the Audi E-Tron, Lexus ES, and the Honda E, so we’re hoping the much more expensive EQS will have those as well one day." https://www.motor1.com/news/397772/mercedes-eqs-spy-video/ NETHERLANDS WILL GIVE 4,000 EUROS TO CITIZENS BUYING ELECTRIC VEHICLE "According to the RTL, a Dutch newsgroup, any citizen of the Netherlands who will buy an electric car after July 1 of this year, are eligible to receive €4,000 ($4,425) that can be used to cover the cost of the car." says beebom.com: "If anyone buys a second-hand EV, they will be getting €2,000 ($2,211). The country took this step to encourage drivers to move from gas vehicles to electric-powered automobiles. The €4,000 subsidy is valid on cars that cost up to €45,000 ($49,744). So the scheme mainly targets lower-end buyers of the market. According to the government, this will get drivers out of the gasoline vehicles and move them into greener alternatives. Now to prevent fraudulent claims of the grant, the car that is being bought must meet government standards and should be bought from a specialist/authorised dealer. According to the source, the Dutch government is also planning to provide non-financial incentives for the buyers. They are trying to give guarantees on software updates and EV battery health for the drivers. " https://beebom.com/netherlands-4000-euros-citizens-buying-electric-vehicle/ SOLAR IS BEATING OUT COAL IN AUSTRALIA "Record-high renewables growth is transforming Australia’s electricity landscape, pushing out coal plants and lowering prices and emissions." accoridng to Bloomberg today: "Solar and wind output during the fourth quarter within the five jurisdictions that make up the National Electricity Market increased 39% from a year earlier, the Australian Energy Market Operator said Monday in its quarterly report. That helped cut power-generation emissions 5% to the lowest in data going back to 2001 and slashed wholesale prices by almost a fifth. Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government has faced increased criticism over its lack of a coherent climate policy following the devastating bushfires that swept across the country this summer. Over the weekend it confirmed its staunch support of the coal industry in the face of a growing backlash against the fuel by giving financial backing to a study into a new plant." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-10/solar-is-beating-out-coal-in-australia-pushing-down-emissions?utm_campaign=news&utm_medium=bd&utm_source=applenews NEW SOUTH AFRICAN LITHIUM-ION CELL MEGA-FACTORY "The Megamillion Energy Company outlined its plans at the Batteries and Electric Vehicles Conference recently hosted by the uYilo eMobility Programme. Megamillion wants to be Africa’s first large-scale manufacturer of Li-ion cells and battery packs, in the hope of bringing down prices and thereby catalysing mass adoption of energy storage systems." writes CleanTechnica: "Megamillion hopes to leverage abundant battery mineral resources in the Southern African region and believes that by localizing the supply chain, it can produce cheaper energy storage systems. The chosen form factor is the cylindrical 2680 cell (a diameter of 26 mm and a length of 80 mm) using nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry for the cathode." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/09/new-south-african-lithium-ion-cell-mega-factory-plans-for-32-gwh-year-by-2028/ DAIMLER OPENS 1MW CHARGING PARK FOR ELECTRIC COMMERCIAL VEHICLES Daimler has opened a new charging park for electric commercial vehicles at the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim headquarters. Daimler Trucks and Mercedes-Benz Vans will jointly use the charging stations for its electric test vehicles. The new charging park will be a further step in the electrification strategy and connected corporate activities. The innovative charging stations have a total output of 1 megawatt, distributed to two DC fast charging stations with 300 kilowatts each for trucks, and three more charging stations with 150 kilowatt output each for vans. GORDON MURRAY REVEALS MOTIV URBAN AUTONOMOUS DRIVE VEHICLE Gordon Murray Design and its consortium partners Delta Motorsport and itMoves are set to unveil ‘MOTIV’, a unique and extremely versatile autonomous vehicle platform at the MOVE 2020 show in London. Part-funded through the UK-government’s ‘IDP14’ programme, the new platform breaks the mould for future mobility development by creating a cost-effective, ultra-lightweight quadricycle vehicle platform that is designed to meet full passenger-car crash safety requirements. Alongside its industry-leading safety credentials, the new fully-electric unit is targeting significant cost savings and improved refinement over its rivals, while delivering the range capabilities, platform flexibility and plug-and-play versatility required by autonomous customers with personal mobility or commercial delivery requirements. MOTIV has the potential to significantly reduce congestion and emissions in city centres due to its fully-electric powertrain and compact footprint. The 1,628mm high pod measures just 2,537mm in length, with a width of 1,310mm. MOTIV is powered by a 20kW electric motor, and will be equipped with a 17.3kWh liquid-cooled battery pack providing a potential range of up to 100km.
“Mercedes-Benz Vans is consistently advancing the electrification of its product portfolio. With the Concept EQV, we are now taking the next step. The concept offers all of the brand-typical attributes familiar from this segment which Mercedes-Benz customers have come to know, appreciate and also expect.

TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018." As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)" https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/ https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/ TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius." https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081 TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard." https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva 31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report." https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.” https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
