Welcome to new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER REALTERS CHOICE PHOTOGRAPHY VW WORKERS URGE FASTER EV ROLLOUT "Volkswagen's (VW) main plant in Wolfsburg might face historically low output this year and needs a faster shift toward electric vehicles to remain competitive, according to the German automaker's top labour officials." reports News24.com: "The rollout of electric car, Trinity, due in 2026 may be too late, according to VW officials. Furthermore, a global chip shortage also happens manufacturing at Wolfsburg. Due to the persistent scarcity of semiconductor chips, the output at Wolfsburg this year could even fall below the level of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic pushed production to just below 500 000 cars, according to VW's works council. VW's initial goal agreed in a labour pact five years ago was to make at least 820 000 vehicles in Wolfsburg last year." https://www.news24.com/fin24/companies/industrial/vw-workers-urge-faster-electric-vehicle-rollout-at-worlds-largest-biggest-car-factory-20211002 MERCEDES-BENZ GIVES SMALLER 60 KWH BATTERY TO EVITO TOURER, EQV "The Mercedes-Benz eVito Tourer (the all-electric variant of the Metris Passenger Van sold in the US) and the more luxurious EQV are getting a new battery pack option. Up until now, both models came with a 100 kWh battery (90 kWh usable), so is Mercedes-Benz giving them an even bigger pack for more range? Well, no. Actually, the new battery option has a 60 kWh net capacity, enabling a range of 217–239 kilometers (135-148 miles) on the eVito Tourer." says InsideEVs: "The standard fast charging function has an output of 50 kW, but an 80 kW option is also possible, in which case the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 35 minutes. Mercedes-Benz argues that the smaller battery will appeal to customers “who cover easy-to-plan routes or who only drive short distances, such as in school transport operations.” Furthermore, it should also be interesting for those buyers looking for a weight saving of 150 kg (330 lbs) and a corresponding payload increase. Last but not least, the 60 kWh battery drives the eVito Tourer's price down by approximately €3,600 ($4,175) compared to the equivalent 90 kWh model (€60,678 versus €64,248)." During the tests, the electric trucks tackled a total of 54,000 metres of altitude. The highest point of the trip was reached during measurement runs at the Kaunertal Glacier, at a height of 2,750 metres. In order to validate the trucks' performance and durability, the testing engineers at Mercedes-Benz Trucks then subjected the electric vehicles, which were loaded to their gross vehicle weight of 27 tonnes, to an extremely gruelling series of tests in the area surrounding Bolzano, South Tyrol. The Alpine terrain enabled the engineers to make particularly extensive use of the vehicles' energy recovery feature, which can be exploited by driving with foresight. Series production of the eActros will start at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth at the beginning of October 2021. The now independent battery division of the South Korean company is called SK On. With the announced spin-off, the Korean company wants to enable the battery division to better focus on the fast-growing market for electric cars and their batteries – independently of the other business lines of the listed company." writes electrive: "The plan is to expand global battery production capacity from the current 40 GWh per year to 85 GWh by 2023, to 220 GWh by 2025 and to over 500 GWh by 2030. In addition, it was announced a few days ago that SK Innovation, together with Ford, will invest in the construction of two new sites with assembly and battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky – with a total capacity of 129 GWh per year." That's according to new research from electric car website Electriying.com, which has ranked the UK's biggest supermarkets in order of EV-friendliness." reports UK Motor1.coM: "Tesco topped the list, with almost half (45 percent) of its UK superstores boasting charging facilities, while Morrisons came second with four in 10 (40 percent) of stores offering EV charging. At the opposite end of the scale, just seven percent of Sainsbury's stores offer at least one EV charging point." The investment means Octopus has attained a valuation of around $4.6 billion."£ says TechCrunch: "Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors. Octopus is now managing 17 million energy accounts in 12 countries in this manner. Octopus has also earlier launched Electric Juice, an electric vehicle “roaming network” of 100,000 charge points across Europe that allows users to charge their personal Octopus Energy account when they charge their EVs. It's also partnered with Tesla to launch Tesla Power in the U.K. and Germany." The first version of the software was created by the Audi Brussels quality management department for testing the Audi e-tron's battery, and then received further work from VW Group Components at Salzgitter, which is the site of VW's new battery laboratories. The device first checks whether a given battery is able to communicate, after plugging in the low-voltage connectors. BattMan then detects and brings up any error messages present, in addition to the insulation resistance, temperatures, cell voltages, and capacity." The numbers included more than 7,500 P7 sports sedans and more than 2,650 G3 and G3i SUVs. XPeng also got a solid start with its P5 family sedans, which launched mid-month and accounted for 244 vehicle deliveries. For the quarter, 25,666 deliveries was a record, also tripling year over year. Year to date, XPeng has delivered more than 56,400 cars and SUVs, more than 300% higher than at the same time in 2020." says Nasdaq.com: "Li Auto had promising numbers compared to last year's results, but the company noted some pressures that weighed on its sequential performance. Monthly deliveries of 7,094 vehicles were more than double what Li delivered in September 2020. "In issue one of T3, we reported on the release of the EV1, a fully electric car from General Motors, one of America largest automobile manufacturers. The sleek two-door, two-seater is generally regarded as the first mass-produced EV available to the public. It had a 0-60 time of around 8.4 seconds and a range of between 70 and 100 miles – and up to 140 miles for the second generation model. (BMW's i3 will only do around 150 and that was released in 2013.)" says T3: "The EV1 launched in 1996, with the improved model II appearing in 1999. But instead of losing interest – or being pressured out of the market – let's imagine GM stuck with it…" Read more: https://www.t3.com/us/news/what-if-the-gm-ev1-electric-car-had-been-a-success NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Returns on Sunday 10th October! WEDNESDAY FORD'S FORTHCOMING BATTERY-ELECTRIC TRUCK TO BE CALLED 'F-150 LIGHTNING' On Twitter @mrlevine Mike Levine, Ford North America Product Communications manager: "BAM! Get ready for the all-electric, all-new Ford F-150 Lightning to be revealed on May 19 at 930 pm ET. ime to take electric and turn it into Lightning. Quicker than the original F-150 SVT Lightning yet able to work as hard as today’s trucks. Awesome!" "Ford Motor Co.'s battery-electric version of its best-selling F-150 pickup truck is coming — and now it has a name. The Blue Oval revealed Monday that the truck will be dubbed "F-150 Lightning." The vehicle itself will be unveiled May 19 via a livestreamed event from Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn." says The Detroit News: "F-150 Lightning is part of Ford's initial portfolio of electric vehicles that includes the Mustang Mach-E, which launched at the end of last year, and the forthcoming electric version of the Transit van." https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2021/05/10/ford-announces-name-reveal-date-upcoming-battery-electric-f-150/5020845001/ MERCEDES-BENZ CONCEPT EQT "The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT previews the brand’s new T-Class MPV, the electric version of which will be the ninth model from its EQ sub-brand" says Autocar today: "Set to rival the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo when UK sales get underway in 2022, the new model has been developed in partnership with Renault; the T-Class is twinned with the third-generation Kangoo, while the EQT is a sister model to the recently announced Kangoo E-Tech Electric. The chargers, which will be operated and maintained by Franklin Energy on the LiFe Network, will be supplied by EVBox and installed over a number of phases. The first phase, which is due to complete later this year, will see the installation of 50 fast charging points (22kW AC) and two ultra-rapid charging points (350 kW DC) The fast chargers take 1-2 hours to fully charge a car battery, providing ample time for customers to enjoy the many retail and leisure offerings available at Brent Cross and complements the average time taken for a visit, which, prior to the pandemic, averaged at 95 minutes.(1) https://franklinenergy.co.uk/uks-largest-ev-charging-hub-set-to-electrify-brent-cross/ RENAULT CONSIDERS INTRODUCING BATTERY-SWAPPING IN ITS ELECTRIC CARS "Renault is considering introducing a battery-swapping capability in its electric cars, potentially becoming the first big carmaker to embrace the technology." reports the Financial Times today: "Chief executive Luca de Meo told the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit on Tuesday he is assessing plans to adopt the technology, which would significantly cut waiting times at recharging stations. The battery-swapping technology also allows manufacturers to decouple the cost of batteries from new electric vehicles, preventing drivers from being concerned about depreciating battery capacity or value." Audi has developed more new EVs in the past couple of years than Tesla has developed in its entire existence." points out the website Quattrodaily - so, they'll be a little biased!: "According Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, electric vehicles will make up half of the automotive market by 2030. In fact, Duesmann sees such a massive shift in the demand for electric vehicles that, as long as the infrastructure can support it, he doesn’t see a reason why any customer would want internal combustion if electric vehicles are available." https://www.quattrodaily.com/audi-boss-thinks-electric-vehicles-will-be-half-of-the-market-by-2030/ FRANCE WRITES-OFF CHADEMO STANDARD IN NEW LEGISLATION "The end of the CHAdeMO fast-charging standard is on the horizon in France. While a 2017-decree made CHAdeMO mandatory for DC-charging stations alongside CCS and Type 2 by the end of 2024, the government has now revised its plans." writes electrive: "The decree, published in its revised form earlier this month, ends the requirement to implement the Japanese standard. From now on, only CCS for DC charging and Type 2 for AC charging (22 kW) is considered mandatory for newly installed and replaced fast-charging stations in France. The French decree further stresses the requirement of interoperability and introduces obligations in terms of quality of service. CPOs and networks must make their commitments public, for example, “report periodically” on the quality levels achieved." https://www.electrive.com/2021/05/10/france-writes-off-chademo-standard-in-new-legislation/ ARE ELECTRIC FIRE TRUCKS IN THE NEAR FUTURE? "However, it wasn’t until recently that innovators began to apply electric technology to emergency vehicles. Now, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is showing off North America’s first electric fire engine from Austria-based Rosenbauer Group." says Clean Fleet Report: "However, the vehicle isn’t fully electric. It’s a series plug-in hybrid like the Chevrolet Volt. Volvo Penta, which has created electric powertrains for a variety of applications, will power the Revolutionary Technology fire truck. The electric drive unit is based on one use in terminal tractors. To test durability, Rosenbauer will also test three more trucks in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dubai. The truck features two electric motors with a total output of 490 horsepower...quick-charge batteries with a charging capacity of 100 to 150 kilowatts." https://cleanfleetreport.com/feature-are-electric-fire-trucks-in-the-near-future/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=feature-are-electric-fire-trucks-in-the-near-future QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power. ID.4 GETS FULL FIVE STARS IN EURO NCAP TEST "The European NCAP crash safety test results for the Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is out – the five-door, two-tonne crossover has achieved top scores in the latest assessment programme." according to PaulTan.org: "It fared commendably in the adult occupant protection category, netting 35.6 points (93%) out of a possible 38. Child occupant protection and safety assist systems are good as well, scoring 89% and 85% respectively. Speaking of which, the ID.4 range is offered with several advanced driver assist systems as standard. Among those include forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and vehicle turning detection, lane keeping assist system, adaptive cruise control, and driver alert system." https://paultan.org/2021/04/20/volkswagen-id-4-gets-full-five-stars-in-euro-ncap-test/ CHINA DOMINATES ROLLOUT OF EV CHARGING STATIONS "China installed 284,000 public EV charging outlets in 2020, including 112,000 in December alone – more than the entire US public charging network – according to data published by BloombergNEF. BNEF’s Head of Advanced Transport, Colin McKerracher, quoted numbers which showed that China had over 800,000 publicly available EV charging outlets installed at the end of 2020 – up from 516,000 in 2019 and 300,000 in 2018." report The Driven: " China finished 2020 representing almost two-thirds of all public EV charging points installed globally. McKerracher noted that the US electric vehicle transition benefits from the extensive urban sprawl and the resulting detached homes with driveways or garages that, in turn, provide much easier private charging options and thus reducing the need for public chargers. Volkswagen’s director of technology strategy in China, Xu Peng, revealed during the company’s Power Day in March that only 30% of public chargers in some parts of China are actually functional – suffering from either defective chargers, or the globally common problem of being blocked by internal combustion engine vehicles" https://thedriven.io/2021/04/20/china-dominates-rollout-of-ev-charging-stations-4000-a-day-in-december/ BYD EVS WILL NOW COME WITH BLADE BATTERIES Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD recently announced that all of its pure electric vehicles will now come with the brand’s ‘ultra-safe’ Blade Batteries, with nail penetration testing fully adopted as a brand standard. At the same time, the Blade Battery completed an extreme strength test that saw it being rolled over by a 46-ton heavy truck, once again resetting the bar for power battery safety. The test itself saw a 46-ton fully loaded heavy-duty truck drive over the Blade Battery pack, which the battery successfully passed without leakage, deformation or smoke, coming out perfectly intact and ready to be used in an EV. In addition, four new pure electric models were also launched on the Chinese market at the same time, namely the 2021 Tang EV, Qin PLUS EV, Song PLUS EV, and 2021 e2, all equipped with Blade Batteries. MERCEDES-BENZ TEASES NEW EQT "Mercedes-Benz is teasing the EQT, an electric minivan to be unveiled by American pro skateboarder Tony Hawk next month. The van passenger van segment is not on the top of the list of markets to electrify. Daimler is actually one of the early movers in the space with the EQV electric van, but that’s quite expensive. Now they are announcing a new entry, the Mercedes-Benz EQT, that should be an “entry-level” electric van." says electrek: "The Mercedes-Benz EQT is going to be unveiled on Monday, May 10," https://electrek.co/2021/04/20/mercedes-benz-eqt-electric-minivan/ SKODA ENYAQ IN DEMAND Skoda boss Thomas Schäfer speaks in an interview with AUTO BILD: "Skoda needs at least four electric vehicles by the end of the decade . At least one below the Enyaq iV, another possibly the size of the Octavia . But only in the second half of the decade. At the same time, we are ideally positioned with our portfolio. The Octavia is just new - with all drive variants from gasoline to plug-in hybrids. The new Fabia will celebrate its world premiere in May and will go on sale a few months later. We are also planning a product upgrade for the Kodiaq . Incoming orders are much higher than we expected. We currently have well over 20,000 pre-orders. We mustn't forget here that these are customers who have ordered the car blindly, i.e. without having seen or driven it live. We had planned to be able to build 350 vehicles per day in Mladá Boleslav. And now increase to 500 units per day as quickly as possible. Yes, we can deliver. But it depends on individual options and the size of the battery . There are currently minor restrictions here. Our German sales colleagues and our dealers are doing a great job here." https://www.autobild.de/artikel/skoda-chef-thomas-schaefer-interview-19464431.html ELECTRIC AUDI A6 E-TRON CONCEPT "Audi is pushing forward with its electric design, adding e-tron power to the A6 lineage. Debuted at Auto Shanghai 2021, the all-new A6 e-tron concept previews a sporty fastback sedan planned for future launch. The new concept uses a combination of LEDs and OLEDs to light up the road ahead, send out warnings and messages to other road users, and even host a little outdoor gaming." says New Atlas: "Matrix LED technology blasts bright light from the minimal surface area. More than mere lamps, the headlights are also projectors, capable of casting an image several meters wide onto a surface ahead. The A6 e-tron concept previews the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) that Audi is working on jointly with Porsche. The platform carries a flat-mounted battery pack between the axles and can be scaled in battery size and wheelbase to serve as the basis for many vehicles. For the A6 e-tron concept, Audi wired up a 100-kWh battery to a dual-motor quattro all-wheel electric drive that puts out up to 469 hp (350 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. It estimates that the A6 e-tron can travel up to 435 miles (700 km, WLTP) per charge and sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under four seconds. Thanks to the PPE's 800-V electricals, the A6 e-tron can DC fast-charge with up to 270 kW, adding 186 miles (300 km) in as little as 10 minutes " So your own drive in movie? https://newatlas.com/automotive/electric-audi-a6-e-tron-concept/ CONFIRMATION OF ID.4 GTX "VW says its sportier, faster versions of its upcoming EVs will be badged “GTX,” starting with the all-wheel-drive ID.4 GTX, with a second motor on the front axle. confirmed Autoweek. Autocar understands that the ID 4 GTX will feature a lower ride height than the regular ID 4, with various other chassis changes made in order to boost the handling and performance. The ID 4 GTX is set to be followed later this year by the ID 5, a coupé-crossover version of the ID 4. It is likely that model will also gain a GTX version eventually. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-volkswagen-id-4-gtx-hot-electric-suv-launch-28-april QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Would you buy a Chinese-made EV?

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. I mentioned a new Patron on Sunday but I missed off his company name. Doh! So welcome to LegacyEV as a supporter. Mavrick said: “We are simplifying the EV conversion process by making deals with all the smaller manufacturers of EV parts and components to sell them on our platform using our team of design engineers to help people make sure they are pairing the right components to give their vehicle the performance they are striving for.” MERCEDES EQA AND EQB UPDATES "The Mercedes-Benz EQA’s official reveal is surely just around the corner, but one of our spy shooters just caught a pair of them driving around with hardly any camouflage. Last we glimpsed Mercedes’ electric version of the GLA, both the front and rear were completely shrouded in blue wrapping. Today, there’s hardly any left." says Autoblog: "What we knew all along is still true: The EQA is basically going to look like the GLA, but with a few changes to indicate its electric powertrain. Mercedes could be going for a full-width rear taillight in an effort to make the EQA visually different. That’d make it similar to the EQC and tie in with the EQ family look — we already know the EQS is getting the full -width taillight treatment. The official reveal was meant to happen in 2020, but rumors suggest Covid-19 pushed its launch back to 2021. At the model’s current state of camouflage dress, we suspect it’ll be revealed any day now." EQA is like a small SUV crossover, a hatchback on stilts, VW ID4/Skoda Enyaq/TEsla Model Y. I am epecting a late Jan reveal. And InsideEVs has some footage from the EQB, although it's sunny and Germany is currentyl cold and snowy! "Mercedes-Benz wants to make sure the EQB will have a brilliant performance if that is the case. What better way to ensure that than Nürburgring Nordschleife tests?" The EQB will be based on the GLB as much as the EQC derives from the GLC, and the EQA will seize the GLA structure. The first car designed to be electric from the German brand will probably be the EQS. Expect it to be the first Mercedes-Benz to present a frunk. The EQB is said to have a range of 499 kilometers (310 miles), and it will be presented in 2021." EQA, EQB, EQC (out already), EQV (out already), EQE and EQS (both in sedan and SUV shades). https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/11/mercedes-benz-eqa-spy-photos/ https://insideevs.com/news/465446/mercedes-benz-eqb-testing-nurburgring-nordschleife/ TESLA CHINA SOLD ALMOST 24,000 GIGA SHANGHAI MADE MODEL 3 IN DECEMBER "Tesla set a new record in December, registering nearly 24,000 vehicles and accounting for over 11% of all retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in December." reports TEsmanian: "Retail sales of new energy passenger cars in China reached 206,000 units in December, up 58.1% year-on-year, and 20.8% more than in November. In December, the electric vehicle market showed a sharp increase in sales of both expensive and budget models." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-sold-nearly-24-000-vehicles-in-china-in-december-over-11-of-the-countrys-nev-sales TESLA MODEL S & X RESUMES PRODUCTION "Tesla’s flagship sedan and SUV, both of which paved the way for the harbinger of automotive disruption that is the Model 3, seem poised for a comeback after an 18-day break. As hinted at in a previously leaked Elon Musk email last month, the Fremont Factory’s Model S and Model X production lines are resuming operations today, January 11, 2021, following a shutdown that started on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020. " says TEslarati: "Neither Elon Musk nor Tesla itself has posted any information indicating that a new Model S and Model X “refresh” are coming, but clues about changes coming to the two flagship vehicles have been observed over the past few months." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-model-x-resume-production/ TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED WITH SINGLE-PIECE REAR CAST SECTION "Tesla has started production of the Model Y with a massive single-piece rear casting, according to a picture of a new unit of the electric SUV. It’s the automaker’s latest move into massive casting techniques." reports electrek: "This new strategy is enabled by a new giant casting machine, the biggest in the world, that Tesla acquired, and subsequently ordered many more machines. From starting production, we didn’t know how quickly Tesla would be able to use the new part in production Model Y vehicles. Now we can confirm that the new single-casting rear underbody is in new Model Y vehicles. The owner of a Model Y produced in late December removed the lining of his trunk for the installation of a third-party accessory and could see the new part" The casting machine (the Giga Press) is built in Italy by Idra Group. Yesterday another Giga Press was delivered to Giga Berlin. One of the comments says: "There's no doubt that replacing numerous parts with a single casting is great from an inventory and assembly standpoint. From a design engineer's perspective, though, it tends to lock in the design because modifications to tooling is prohibitively expensive. I sure hope they're happy with the location of every boss and mounting point, because they aren't getting changed until they need to replace the tool due to wear." https://electrek.co/2021/01/11/tesla-starts-production-model-y-massive-single-piece-rear-casting/ BYD ADL PARTNERSHIP ACCELERATES ELECTRIFICATION Alexander Dennis Limited (“ADL”) and BYD UK jointly announced today that ADL and BYD will commence the design and assembly of chassis for the BYD ADL partnership’s electric single and double deck buses for the British market, ensuring completed vehicles are built in the UK. Since it began in 2015, the partnership has gone from strength to strength, with over 500 electric buses delivered or on order. They have clocked up a combined over 16 million emission-free miles of reliable service in London as well as numerous towns and cities across the UK. https://evobsession.com/byd-adl-partnership-accelerates-electrification-with-the-design-assembly-of-electric-bus-chassis-in-the-uk/ MCLAREN RACING SIGNS AGREEMENT GRANTING OPTION TO JOIN FORMULA E FOR GEN3 McLaren Racing and Formula E announced they have signed an agreement granting McLaren Racing an option to enter the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship when Formula E’s Gen3 kicks off in Season 9. McLaren Racing has formalised its interest in joining Formula E’s team and manufacturer line-up from the new Gen3 era. https://electriccarsreport.com/2021/01/mclaren-racing-signs-agreement-granting-option-to-join-formula-e-for-gen3/ GUOXUAN UNVEILS A COBALT-FREE LFP POUCH BATTERY CELL WITH 212 WH/KG "Guoxuan is a Chinese battery cell maker known for producing the most energy-dense cobalt-free LFP (LiFePO4) battery cells. Late last year this manufacturer reached a record-breaking energy density of 212 Wh/kg for a LFP battery cell, made with a LFP cathode and a silicon anode. Now, Guoxuan is providing more details about this pouch battery cell." says PushEVs: "Moreover, Guoxuan has the goal of reaching 230 Wh/kg already during this year and 260 Wh/kg in 2022.Being an inherently safe battery chemistry, battery packs made with LFP (LiFePO4) cells don’t require much safety equipment, such as metal firewalls between cells or a complex TMS (Thermal Management System). This means that the GCTPR (gravimetric cell-to-pack ratio) for this battery chemistry is higher than what we have with NCM or NCA battery packs." https://pushevs.com/2021/01/10/guoxuan-unveils-a-cobalt-free-lfp-pouch-battery-cell-with-212-wh-kg/ BATTERY PACK PRICES CITED BELOW $100/KWH FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2020, WHILE MARKET AVERAGE SITS AT $137/KWH "Lithium-ion battery pack prices, which were above $1,100 per kilowatt-hour in 2010, have fallen 89% in real terms to $137/kWh in 2020. By 2023, average prices will be close to $100/kWh, according to the latest forecast from research company BloombergNEF (BNEF)." says BNEF.com: "Battery electric vehicle (BEV) pack prices are $126/kWh on a volume-weighted average basis. At the cell level, average BEV prices were just $100/kWh. This indicates that on average, the battery pack portion of the total price accounts for 21%. Leading battery manufacturers are now enjoying gross margins of up to 20% and their plants are operating at utilization rates over 85%. Maintaining high utilization rates is key to reducing cell and pack prices. If utilization rates are low, then equipment and building depreciation costs are spread over fewer kilowatt-hours of manufactured cells." https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-cited-below-100-kwh-for-the-first-time-in-2020-while-market-average-sits-at-137-kwh/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What your favourite charging network, and why?

Show #854 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 31st July 2020. 7,000 RESERVATIONS FOR THE FISKER OCEAN "Fisker, which pins its hopes of rising from the ashes in the Ocean electric SUV, dished out a hard figure to judge just how much interest there is in its upcoming EV. It's nothing spectacular, but there's certainly interest." says CNET: "The company said Friday it has 7,062 reservations for the Ocean. Compared to recent news surrounding preorders (I'm thinking Tesla Cybertruck and Ford Bronco) it's a drop in the bucket. However, it goes to show there is an audience for Fisker's SUV with oodles of sustainable materials inside. The reservations come from 30 countries and Fisker said the figure virtually sells out the first planned production run in late 2022. Additionally, Fisker talked about a second SUV for the first time it dubbed a "sports crossover." The image shows a swoopy design sort of reminiscent of the Volkswagen ID 4. Behind it, the startup also wants to produce a pickup truck." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/fisker-ocean-electric-suv-reservations-future-models/ VOLKSWAGEN DELAYS DEAL TO SUPPLY A POWERTRAIN FOR HENRIK FISKER'S NEW EV "Buried as almost a passing note in a recent investor presentation by car designer and EV startup founder Henrik Fisker was news that Volkswagen has delayed negotiations to supply powertrain parts for his company’s upcoming Ocean crossover. Sounds like a big problem." according to Jalopnik: "This could be a huge problem for Fisker Inc., as it’s already advertised and sold deposits for a vehicle with certain projected performance—deposits it accepted without even knowing for certain what the fundamental hardware of the vehicle would be. Any major changes from here could mean major changes to the Ocean as advertised. If they’re changes for the worse, expect to refund some deposits." https://jalopnik.com/volkswagen-delays-deal-to-supply-a-powertrain-for-henri-1844572271 Here’s a statement from Fisker Inc.: "We remain in conversation and parallel development with several industry-leading platform and manufacturing OEMs and suppliers, and will continue to consider any opportunities that would enable us to enter into definitive manufacturing and supply agreements before year-end. We are committed to taking any actions that advance our objective of delivering the Ocean as early as the end of 2022.”" TESLA RELEASES Q2 2020 SAFETY REPORT "In the 2nd quarter, we registered one accident for every 4.53 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 2.27 million miles driven. For those driving without Autopilot and without our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 1.56 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA’s most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 479,000 miles." In comparison, Tesla had an accident on Autopilot every 3.27 million miles in Q2 2019. AMERICA’S CHEAPEST ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE COMING COURTESY OF CHINESE AUTOMAKER KANDI "Chinese electric vehicle and parts manufacturer Kandi Technologies Group is officially bringing two EVs to the United States through its subsidiary Kandi America — news that has prompted run up in its share price in the past day. " says TEch Crunch: "Kandi Technologies has been talking about bringing EVs to the United States for a couple of years. Now, two models are arriving as early as the end of 2020, beginning in a limited area in Texas. Both are priced under $30,000 before federal incentives. The two models heading to the U.S. are Kandi’s compact K27 vehicle that comes with a 17.69 kWh battery, The larger K23 is also coming to the U.S. market. This small electric SUV has a 41.4 kWh battery and a driving range of more than 180 miles. Show #790 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th May 2020. MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCHES ITS ELECTRIC EQV MINIVAN FOR ~$64,000 "Mercedes-Benz is launching its electric EQV minivan in Europe for €71,388.10 (incl. 19% VAT), which is the equivalent of a sticker price of about ~$64,000 USD." says Electrek: "The electric EQV MPV was first unveiled last year when we learned that it is equipped with a 100 kWh battery pack, but the company is limiting the usable capacity to 90 kWh. They believe it’s going to result in 405 km (250 miles) of range on a single charge. To charge the battery pack, the EQV is equipped with an 11 kW on-board charger and it can DC fast-charge at up to 110 kW, which Mercedes claims can charge the battery pack from 10 to 80% in less than 45 min. The electric van will be available as part of its V-Class lineup in Europe, but no availability has been confirmed for the North American market." https://electrek.co/2020/05/26/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-minivan-price/ CarBuzz said: "Like the EQC SUV, the EQV features a similar sealed-off grille design. Riding on 18-inch wheels, it’s certainly one of the smarter vans around. Although still unconfirmed for the local market, the EQV will be offered elsewhere with two wheelbase lengths, the longer one stretching to 135 inches. It can seat up to eight passengers and accommodate 36.4 cubic feet of their luggage. Pretty nifty for a zero-emissions vehicle." https://carbuzz.com/cars/mercedes-benz/eqv And Green Car Reports says: "A new feature offers a particularly efficient and comfortable driving style: recuperation level DAUTO. According to the maxim “drive ahead and save energy” information from the security assistants, the navigation system and the camera get connected and adjust the strength of the recuperation situation—specifically and in real time. In addition, four driving programs help the customer to choose individually between the maximum of comfort and the maximum of range while driving." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/05/20200526-eqv.html KIA IS CONSIDERING AN ULTRA-SMALL ELECTRIC CAR "Kia is examining plans to build a purely electric miniature car in the style of the Citroën Ami. Although the South Korean company has not revealed a timetable for these plans, it seems that Kia is already considering a new distribution model for the electric microcar." says Carrie from Electrive: "In a candid interview with AutoExpress Emilio Herrera, COO of Kia in Europe confirmed the company’s considerations. The mini electric car for urban areas – if it is realized – will be offered for rent globally via a subscription model. “The idea is to have a dedicated platform from Kia that we could possibly share with Hyundai,” Herrera said. The Kia manager did not name a timetable for a possible market launch of the small electric car. AutoExpress is expecting a corresponding production model in 2022. Citroën introduced the Ami at the end of February. The small two-seater in a strongly stylised design is to be available at prices starting at 6,000 euros or a monthly leasing rate of 19.99 euros (four years, 10,000 kilometres per year) in France. Pricing models for other European markets have not yet been revealed. Since Herrera spoke of a “dedicated platform” for the very small electric car, it does not seem likely to be the skateboard platform from Canoo. " https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/26/kia-is-considering-an-ultra-small-electric-car/ RUMOR: IN APRIL TESLA RECEIVED ABOUT 15,000 ORDERS FOR MIC MODEL 3 LR "According to the Chinese media (via Moneyball), Tesla has received in April close to 15,000 orders for the new Long Range Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3. It's an unofficial number." reports InsideEVs: "t's great news that the demand for the upcoming LR (rear-wheel drive) is high because Tesla intends to produce in China some 4,000 Model 3 per week as early as in June. The last month was weaker than expected, as Model 3 registrations amounted to 4,312, up to 3-4 times less than anticipated production output (at 3,000 per week). It's explained that consumers were delaying orders of the Standard Range Model 3 to get a more attractive price (after changes in subsidies). Only time will tell whether sales in China will really stabilize at 4,000 per week (or 12,000 per month) for all versions (SR and LR)." https://insideevs.com/news/425337/tesla-15000-orders-model-3-lr/ AUDI E-TRON IS THE NEW KING OF NORWAY "Norway remains one of the most fascinating auto markets in the world. With a 70% plug-in vehicle market share in the first 4 months of 2020, there is nothing that comes close to it. That isn’t an overnight figure either — the country has been far ahead of any other market in terms of plug-in vehicle market share for several years."That said, the market leader is now a vehicle that would typically be outside the price range of a working class family in other countries, but Norway is a rich country (very rich country) with adventurous terrain, so it makes a bit of sense. The Audi e-tron isn’t just first — it’s far ahead in the #1 spot so far this year." says CleanTechnica: "A German model that was in the #1 spot for many, many months, the Volkswagen e-Golf, is solidly in second at 6% market share. After that, you’ve got the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona EV, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, BMW i3, and then a long tail of remaining PEVs. You also have a handful of plug-less vehicles scattered into the overall sales rankings (see charts below)." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/audi-e-tron-is-the-new-king-of-norway/ MACRON DEMANDS CARMAKERS TURN TO ‘MADE IN FRANCE’ FOR €8BN VIRUS AID "French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled on Tuesday (26 May) an €8 billion aid package for the auto industry, which includes increased subsidies for electric car purchases" says Euractiv.com: "Negotiations with the likes of Citroën, Peugeot and Renault have been ongoing for weeks and the €8 billion support package does not come without strings, as Macron has made it clear they are expected to do more domestically. It was not immediately unclear if the support plan has specific conditions in terms of moving production back to France, although Renault will reportedly build electric motors at a plant in Normandy rather than in Asia, as previously planned, in order to access state aid. Renault will also lend its weight to the Battery Alliance, a pan-European industrial push to boost battery production and increase supply in check with growing demand for electric vehicles. Macron’s €8bn scheme is also aimed at consumers, who will be able to benefit from new and improved subsidy schemes worth around €1bn. For electric cars, the current premium of €6,000 for private citizens will increase to €7,000, while plug-in hybrids will be worth €2,000." https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/news/macron-demands-carmakers-turn-to-made-in-france-for-e8bn-virus-aid/ RECORD €60BN INVESTMENT IN ELECTRIC CARS AND BATTERIES IN EUROPE SECURED LAST YEAR Europe secured €60 billion in investments to produce electric vehicles and batteries last year – 19 times more than in 2018, new analysis shows. Driven by EU car CO2 targets, industry and governments committed 3.5 times more into EV and battery production in Europe than they did in China, according to T&E’s report. Germany got the biggest chunk, €40 billion, coming mainly from the Volkswagen Group, and Tesla which announced a plant in Berlin. The Czech Republic received €6.6 billion, also thanks to VW, which plans to produce 75 all-electric models worldwide by 2029. Italy secured €1.75 billion in EV investments last year from Fiat, while France, Sweden and the UK each got around €1 billion from car manufacturers. Spain received close to €300 million from Opel, and Croatia got €80 million from Hyundai and Kia. BYD BLADE PRISMATIC BATTERY CELL SPECS AND POSSIBILITIES "Simpler battery packs made with fewer and larger battery cells weren’t possible with compromised platforms like MQB, however in skateboard platforms like MEB – specially made for electric cars -, they are not only possible, they are what makes sense. Only in late 2016, high energy density battery cells started to be available in pouch format, like the LGX E63 made by LG Chem." says PushEVs: "In 2020, assembling big battery packs with tiny cells doesn’t make sense and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tesla announces a battery pack made with cobalt-free prismatic battery cells in “battery day”. This would be great, not only for Tesla, but also for electric bicycle manufacturers who would benefit from an immediate increase of cylindrical cells available on the market. BYD Blade Battery is a module-less CTP (cell-to-pack) battery pack. Without modules, the long prismatic battery cells connected in series are put in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, making it as simple as possible. The simplicity of the CTP technology helps to achieve a good energy density at the battery pack level, even if the energy density of the cells isn’t amazing." https://pushevs.com/2020/05/26/byd-blade-prismatic-battery-cell-specs-possibilities/ RENAULT CAPTUR PLUG-IN HYBRID SPEC REVEALED Renault UK has confirmed full specifications of new E-TECH version of the two all-new Renault Captur Plug-in Hybrid. MERCEDES EQB SPIED LOOKING ALMOST READY FOR PRODUCTION "Mercedes-Benz’ current range of all-electric vehicles for the masses consists of just two models. These are the EQC mid-size crossover and the EQV, a zero-emission people mover that was revealed in Frankfurt earlier this month. Another green model with a three-pointed star logo is currently under development and these are its first spy photos we can share." reports Motor1 who are always first to get spy shots: "Meet the Mercedes EQB, basically an all-electric version of the GLB crossover, which should become a relatively more affordable option for the customers than the EQC. In these shots, it’s seen testing on public roads together with another GLB prototype and trying to hide its exterior design. Judging by these photos, the EQB is in the advanced stages of development – it’s wearing its production body and lights, and – most likely – the final powertrain configuration is already underneath the skin. Speaking of the powertrain, word on the street is the EQB will offer a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) at a single charge, but will probably lose the seven-seat cabin layout of the regular GLB." It does have a bit of the eSoul about it! https://www.motor1.com/news/371735/mercedes-eqb-spied-testing/ MERCEDES-BENZ IS PLAYING IT SAFE WITH BATTERIES AND DRIVING RANGE—FOR THE LONG HAUL "With the launch of the Mercedes-Benz EQC earlier this year for Europe, some seized on the fully electric luxury crossover’s driving range as a sign the brand just wan't keeping up." says Green Car Reports: "The EQC hasn’t yet been rated for range by the U.S. EPA (or arrived here yet) but with 80 kwh of usable rated capacity it’s expected to slot in for the U.S. at 10-20 percent less rated range than the 293-mile Europe’s WLTP cycle indicates—and with fewer miles per kwh than the Tesla Model X, which ekes 325 miles from about 95 kwh of usable capacity." According to Jochen Hermann, the head of eDrive development at Daimler AG: "“We don’t think it’s necessary to go for, let’s call it the last mile within the battery, I’d rather have something reliable, safe, and offer charging opportunities. Safety is number one within Mercedes—and safety also means reliability, quality, and long-term performance." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125098_mercedes-benz-is-playing-it-safe-with-batteries-and-driving-range-for-the-long-haul SKODA STARTS SERIAL PRODUCTION OF SUPERB IV PLUG-IN HYBRID Today, the first SUPERB iV rolled off the line at the SKODA AUTO Kvasiny plant. The new SKODA SUPERB iV plug-in hybrid is made exclusively in Kvasiny, where it is built on the same production line as SUPERB variants that are driven solely by a combustion engine. In the SUPERB iV, a 1.4 TSI petrol engine and an electric motor deliver a combined power output of 160 kW (218 PS). The all-electric range is up to 56 km in the WLTP cycle (35 miles); up to 930 km can be covered when combined with the petrol engine. InsideEVs adds: "Just like the Superb is directly related to the Passat, the Superb iV is directly related to the Passat GTE (the 2nd model evolution) with the same 13 kWh battery and up to 56 km (34.8 miles) of all-electric range under WLTP test cycle. Market launch of the Superb iV is scheduled for early 2020 with sedan and combi versions." TESLA “SMART” SUMMON WILL BE AVAILABLE ON OLDER MODEL S AND MODEL X WITH HARDWARE 2.0 "Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the highly-anticipated “Smart Summon” feature will be available for all Autopilot vehicles with hardware 2.0 and above. The announcement comes just nine days after Musk said that the Summon software was “almost perfect“." writes TEslarati: "After Tesletter posted V10 release notes regarding “Smart” Summon on their official Twitter, a follower asked Elon Musk whether owners operating under Hardware 2.5 would have the capability to experience a feature on Tesla’s driving-assist software that will allow a vehicle to find its owner through the Tesla app. Musk replied, clarifying that the newly released “Smart” Summon will operate normally with all vehicles running at least Hardware 2." So that's cars made from October 2016 onwards. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-smart-summon-wide-release-autopilot-hardware-2/ TESLA SAYS MODEL S PLAID COULD RECORD 7:05 NURBURGRING LAP NEXT MONTH "Tesla has made a lot of noise after bringing a couple of Model S prototypes to the Nurburgring for development of its new “Plaid” powertrain – and to chase down the Porsche Taycan’s electric sedan record. Earlier this week, it was reported that the “chassis prototypes”, as the company calls them, had lapped the circuit in 7:20." says CarScoops: "However, the electric car manufacturer doesn’t appear satisfied with that. In fact, it went as far as tweeting that the Model S Plaid may be able to record a 7:05 time when it returns to the German circuit for more testing next month ." https://www.carscoops.com/2019/09/tesla-says-model-s-plaid-could-record-705-nurburgring-lap-next-month/ FUTURE BMW 7 SERIES EV TO HAVE 670 HP, 120 KWH BATTERY "BMW’s plans regarding electrifying its range are picking up speed with a new CEO at the helm. We reported a while back that BMW is planning on launching a fully electric version of the 7 Series under the i7 moniker. Today, new reports coming in from Munich seem to confirm the electrification of the 7 Series." reports BMW Blog: "There are rumors around two versions of the BMW i7: the standard version and an i7S. The latter will have more range and will be more powerful, as you might expect. According to our info, the i7S will have a power output of around 670 HP and a 120 kWh battery. With these figures, the expected range in WLTP tests should be around 600 km (360 miles)." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/09/18/rumor-future-bmw-7-series-ev-to-have-670-hp-120-kw-battery/ AIR POLLUTION PARTICLES FOUND ON FOETAL SIDE OF PLACENTAS – STUDY "Air pollution particles have been found on the foetal side of placentas, indicating that unborn babies are directly exposed to the black carbon produced by motor traffic" writes Damian Carrington in The Guardian: "It found thousands of the tiny particles per cubic millimetre of tissue in every placenta analysed. The link between exposure to dirty air and increased miscarriages, premature births and low birth weights is well established. The research suggests the particles themselves may be the cause, not solely the inflammatory response the pollution produces in mothers. A comprehensive global review concluded that air pollution may be damaging every organ and virtually every cell in the human body. Nanoparticles have also been found to cross the blood-brain barrier and billions have been found in the hearts of young city dwellers."

Show #556 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 20th August 2019. MERCEDES-BENZ EQV WORLD PREIMERE A new video hit YoUTube today on the official Mercedes-Benz channel to premiere the EQV. The video description says: "The electric drive train (eATS) of the EQV is situated on the front axle under the dynamic front end of the car with a charging connection in the bumper. It has a peak output of 150 kW. The electric motor, the transmission with a fixed gear ratio, the cooling system and the power electronics constitute a highly integrated, compact unit. The power is provided by a lithium ion battery under the floor of the vehicle. Its low, central location also has a positive effect on the handling characteristics of the EQV. A top speed of up to 160 km/h also ensures that you quickly get to where you are going outside an urban environment." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyHVf-FQHGk MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC VAN DEBUTS WITH 250-MILE RANGE "The German luxury marque revealed the EQV online ahead of its global debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show next month, and it packs a lot of the tech we expected it would. It's mostly a battery-electric version of the standard V-Class, and the company plans to build it in Spain alongside its fossil-fuel-sipping cousin. Thus, the design is pretty familiar, but the EQV wears a face we've become familiar with." says CNET: "The lithium-ion battery that motivates the EQV is under the floor to save on cargo space. Total, drivers will have 201 horsepower at their disposal and the 90-kWh lithium-ion battery will provide an estimated range of 250 miles. Like so many European estimates, it's important to note the range is based on WLTP standards, which are more liberal than EPA estimates. Mercedes-Benz didn't say how long it will take to charge the van on a standard socket or its 11-kW charging box, but DC fast charging will juice the battery to 80% in under 45 minutes." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-van/ MERCEDES EQV REVEALED AS WORLD'S FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC PREMIUM VAN And from Motor1.com today: "Just like the EQV Concept, the production all-electric van adopts the automaker’s MBUX infotainment platform with a single tablet-style screen instead of the 12.3-inch screens seen on other new Mercedes products. The system supports voice control and also allows customers to pre-condition the interior cabin temperature from a special mobile application." https://uk.motor1.com/news/366081/mercedes-eqv-unveiled-details/ YOU WON'T NEED A PHONE TO USE THE PORSCHE TAYCAN'S APPLE MUSIC "Porsche is including Apple Music in the all-electric Taycan so its drivers can enjoy their tunes without having to connect their phone. That said, you’ll still have to be an Apple Music subscriber, which costs anywhere from $5 to $15 a month. If you already have Apple Music, that’s great. If you need to buy it, well, it still costs the same as a Spotify subscription." reports Jalopnik. From the press release from Porsche: "From the touchscreen display in the Porsche Advanced Cockpit, Apple Music subscribers can stream over 50 million songs ad-free, thousands of curated playlists, and the Beats 1 global livestream with three-year complimentary in-car internet data. This is the first-ever full integration of Apple Music in any vehicle." https://jalopnik.com/you-wont-need-a-phone-to-use-the-porsche-taycans-apple-1837400531 PORSCHE’S TAYCAN WILL BE THE FIRST CAR WITH A BUILT-IN APPLE MUSIC APP And from The Verge today: "Although it has previously been possible to listen to Apple Music in compatible cars using CarPlay (which Porsche has supported since 2015), this is the first time Apple’s music streaming service has been available as a native app on any car. Combined with the announcement that Apple is putting iTunes on Samsung TVs, the move shows how Apple is increasingly comfortable with putting its apps and services on non-Apple hardware. Making its services available on a wide range of devices will be important for the company as it shifts towards relying on service subscriptions for more of its revenue." https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/20/20813467/porsche-taycan-apple-music-built-in-carplay-all-electric-vehicle-car PORSCHE IS INTEGRATING APPLE MUSIC INTO THE ALL-ELECTRIC TAYCAN Finally TechCrunch spoke with Porsche: "However, the relationship between Apple and Porsche won’t end there, Porsche North America CEO Klaus Zellmer told TechCrunch. More than 80% of the U.S. Porsche customers also have an iPhone, Zellmer told TechCrunch. Porsche said it will also give Taycan owners three years of free in-car internet." https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/19/porsche-is-integrating-apple-music-into-the-all-electric-taycan/ VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 RESERVATIONS EXCEED 27,000 "Volkswagen has received more than 27,000 reservations for the 1ST launch edition of the Volkswagen ID.3." reports InsideEVs: "The pre-booking of ID.3 1ST was opened on May 8 and the first 10,000 was achieved in 24-hours, on May 9. The pace of registrations then slowed down so the 20,000 mark was reached in early June. Volkswagen has needed more than 100 days to get 27,000 and it's now close to the target of 30,000, which was expected to be achieved by the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. We guess it will be achieved on time, but it's nothing extraordinary taking into consideration the massive sales volume planed. ID.3 1ST special edition (30,000 vehicles), medium battery pack (58 kWh, 420 km / 261 miles of WLTP range), starting below €40,000 in Germany before the deduction of the subsidy, in four colors and three trim versions" https://insideevs.com/news/366001/volkswagen-id3-reservations-exceed-27000/ FORD’S PLANS FOR 2 MIDSIZED CROSSOVERS ON ITS BEV PLATFORM "Ford’s plans to produce next-generation electric cars in Michigan are becoming more concrete. Two battery-electric mid-range crossover models are apparently planned, one for the Ford brand and another for the Lincoln brand, according to a media report. Both models would be based new BEV platform that was announced in March of this year." according to Electrive: "The two new BEVs, which have code-named CDX746 and CDX747 by Automotive News as they leaked the news, are planned for 2023 and will go into production in Flat Rock, Michigan at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023. According to what Automotive News says are “three sources with knowledge of Ford’s plans”, the vehicles will be similar in size to the Ford Edge, which is also available in Europe." https://www.electrive.com/2019/08/20/fords-plans-for-2-midsized-crossovers-on-its-bev-platform/ AUSTRALIA'S ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING NETWORK EXPANDS "The National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) has completed half of its planned 40 station electric vehicle (EV) recharging network with the opening of its latest location in Bega, NSW." reports Carsguide.com.au: "The NRMA’s public charging network is currently free to use for all EV owners, however, the organisation will implement a fee in future for all non-members." https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/australias-electric-car-charging-network-expands-75771 2021 BMW INEXT RETURNS IN NEW TEASERS SHOWING PROTOTYPES PRODUCTION Anthony Karr at Motor1 has the lowdown on the BMW iNEXT: “Following the first teaser images of the BMW iNEXT, released in March, May, and July, the all-electric SUV is returning in a series of new preliminary images and a video, showing pre-production prototypes in camouflage. The test cars were produced at the company’s Pilot Plant in the heart of the Research & Innovation Centre (FIZ) and will be used for road tests and preparations for actual mass production. BMW’s main goal is to assemble the EV on the same assembly line as conventional ICE-powered and PHEV cars. As for the iNEXT itself, think of it as the all-electric alternative of the X5 in terms of dimensions and cabin room. Currently under development, the model will incorporate BMW’s fifth-generation electric drive system with an estimated range between charges of more than 373 miles (600 kilometers) based on the WLTP cycle. The iNEXT will be the “technology flagship” of the automaker and will support level 3 autonomous driving when it debuts for the 2021 model year." https://www.motor1.com/news/366028/2021-bmw-inext-teaser-exterior/ REPORT: RANGE ANXIETY REMAINS THE BIGGEST TURN-OFF FOR SWITCHING TO AN EV Range anxiety is still a concern for company car drivers in the UK, despite the growing electric vehicle infrastructure. A new survey conducted by Venson Automotive Solutions reveals that while drivers are widely switched on to the benefits and implications of electric vehicle (EV) ownership, 69% still have concerns with the charging infrastructure. 86% of motorists surveyed said that a ‘lack of clarity in terms of ownership implications as a company car driver’ is a thing of the past, and more than two-thirds of drivers said that they have a good understanding of the costs and convenience of owning an EV. https://autovistagroup.com/news-and-insights/company-car-drivers-still-have-concerns-over-ev-range-and-infrastructure COMMUNITY The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. R SETS EV LAP RECORD AT THE NÜRBURGRING-NORDSCHLEIFE Volkswagen Motorsport on Twitter: "6:05.336 minutes! New electric lap record by the Volkswagen ID.R on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Another milestone in electro-mobility." 2nd fastest lap of the circuit, EVER. Clips com said: "Romain Dumas, a race car driver and Porsche factory driver, set the lap record in the I.D. R after setting the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record last year using the same car. However, for the Nürburgring, Volkswagen had to modify the vehicle to conquer the iconic track. While Volkswagen kept the same twin motor and battery set-up used during its record-breaking Pikes Peak run, the automaker did a lot of work to maximize the vehicle’s downforce and acceleration. To achieve its top speed faster, Volkswagen changed the energy management system." https://www.motor1.com/news/352745/volkswagen-id-r-nurburgring-record/ TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 ROLLOUT Tesla’s Version 3 (V3) Superchargers will first begin rolling out in locations used for long-distance travel, according to an update provided by CEO Elon Musk. He additionally revealed during a recent interview on Ride the Lightning, a weekly podcast hosted by Ryan McCaffrey, that first generation Superchargers will also be prioritized for replacement." says Teslarati: "Despite Tesla’s open patents for utilizing its Supercharger technology and declared willingness to allow other manufacturers to access its network, Musk said that he hasn’t yet been contacted yet about sharing its facilities and technology. On the topic of developing its Supercharger Network, Tesla’s CEO also explained that the company tries to stay ahead of demand and avoid congestion, but empty Supercharger stations are not in the company’s best interest, either. Also, business permits can slow down expansion efforts despite Tesla’s best efforts to meet its customers’ charging needs. Overall, it’s a balancing act between congestion and freedom to travel." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-v3-rollout-long-distance-stations/ MERCEDES EQE ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2022 TO RIVAL TESLA MODEL S "The recently launched EQC is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes down to Mercedes’ new “EQ” family of pure electric vehicles. The three-pointed star has already previewed an entry-level car in the form of the EQA compact hatchback and also a people-mover with the EQV. We also know for a fact that a pure electric version of the GLB compact SUV will arrive in 2021 with the EQB moniker, while a flagship EQS sedan is also on the agenda for a release the same year as the S-Class of electric cars." reports Motor1.com: " Mercedes is also working on an EQE, which according to Autocar was mentioned in a document released by the Chinese Ministry of Information and Technology. Developed under the “V295” codename, the EQE will allegedly be shorter than the conventionally powered E-Class Sedan while offering space inside the cabin similar to the S-Class." https://www.motor1.com/news/352668/mercedes-eqe-sedan-2022-launch/ NEW TESLA ROADSTER IMAGES EMERGE "Tesla's design center in Hawthorne, California is where the design magic takes place for Tesla vehicles, including the upcoming, new Tesla Roadster and the Tesla Semi." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "For a recent interview of Pawel Pietryka, Creative Manager of User Interface Design at Tesla, conducted by the WorkWithUs website, Tesla released some new images of the Roadster, as well as one with the Tesla Semi and design team, too." https://insideevs.com/news/352262/tesla-roadster-images-new/ RESIDENTIAL BATTERIES ARE FIVE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES "A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh. A household battery is about five times the cost of an electric car battery measured in installed $/kWh." writes reneweconomy.com.au: "Residential batteries should be able to get economies of scale in the factory in the same way that auto batteries do. So even though the absolute cost is always likely to be higher because of inverter and installation costs they both should be moving down the cost curve at a good rate. What we see though is good progress in the auto side of costs but no visible movement in the residential side." https://reneweconomy.com.au/residential-batteries-are-five-times-more-expensive-than-electric-car-batteries-40236/ ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES UP 70% IN EUROPE "The European passenger plug-in vehicle market scored some 37,000 registrations in April, growing 30% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering that the overall market is still in the red (-1% in April)." reports CleanTechnica: "In April, fully electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped 70% year over year (YoY), to some 24,000 deliveries, and were responsible for 65% of all plug-in sales in the month." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/03/electric-vehicle-sales-up-70-in-europe-april-ev-sales-report/ CHINA HAS WHOLE TOWNS FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON MAKING ELECTRIC CARS "Shunde is one of at least 20 electric-centric versions of Detroit under construction as China goes all-in on a technology projected to sell in record numbers this year. President Xi Jinping wants the nation’s 500 electric car makers to be magnets for ancillary industries as he pushes to build a manufacturing superpower by 2025." says Bloomberg today: "The amount of investment committed to developing these EV towns is a staggering 209 billion yuan -- equal to about $30 billion -- so far, according to Bloomberg calculations based on public announcements. The ridesharing service has teamed up with Portland General Electric to offer free EV charging in the Oregon city's metro area to eligible drivers from July 1st onward." says Engadget: "The free charging comes not long after Lyft outlined plans to go carbon neutral, and fits in with the company's overall hopes of reducing its environmental impact. I found on the official police website Police.vic.gov.au: "From today, Victoria Police’s Road Policing Command will utilise the all-electric Tesla Model X in highway patrol operational duties, a first for an Australian police organisation. Victoria Police purchased the five-door, five-seat SUV as part of a feasibility study into developing fully integrated electric, IT-based police vehicles for fleet use." https://www.police.vic.gov.au/victoria-police-launch-first-all-electric-operational-vehicle SWISS POLICE PURCHASE FLEET OF 13 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC "The cantonal police of St. Gallen in Switzerland introduced a fleet of 13 Hyundai Kona Electric, out of which five serve in patrol colors and the remaining eight ‘civilian’ models will be used for general services." reports insideEvs: "According to Hyundai, the Kona Electric was the only model that fulfilled the requirements of cantonal police" https://insideevs.com/news/352495/swiss-police-hyundai-kona-electric/ Question of the Week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018." As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)" https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/ https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/ TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius." https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081 TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard." https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva 31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report." https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.” https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
