The search for a diagnosis can be a long and difficult journey for patients with a rare disease, but CrowdMed is offering a different way for them to find the answers they seek. CrowdMed was started in 2012 to harness “the wisdom of crowds” to solve even the world’s most difficult medical cases online. Jared Heyman CrowdMed Founder & CEO started CrowdMed because his own sister spent 3 years with a chronic, undiagnosed medical condition that nearly killed her. He saw first-hand the inadequacies that exist in today’s medical system when it comes to helping patients with undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or underdiagnosed medical conditions.   It’s not the fault of doctors — they’re doing the best that they can within the constraints that the medical system places upon them. It’s the fault of the medical system itself. Physicians, especially those in primary care, are under enormous time pressures, and can now afford to spend only 13 to 16 minutes per patient visit. Jared Heyman's sister went from a young healthy teen to someone who had to drop out of college because of depression and a fatigue so profound she could only watch TV or play solitaire. She would also wake up several times a night with nightmares and cold sweats. Eventually she became suicidal. Over the course of 3 years, she saw 16 different medical specialists (all seen individually) racked up $100,000 in medical bills to no avail. They couldn't figure it out.  She was what you really don't ever want to be – a tough case. Finally, the diagnosis was made. It had a rare disease that only affects 15,000 females. She was treated and is doing fine now, but her story inspired her brother to do something to help other people like her.
