Today, we'll be talking about the importance of flossing. Now, most Americans think that if they floss, they will just have a prettier smile. What they don't realize is that if they don't floss, they are more susceptible to periodontitis. Periodontitis, unfortunately, can contribute to other health problems. To undertand the importance of flossing, we have Deborah Lyle, RDH, BS, MS, Director of Professional and Clinical Affairs, Waterpik, joining us today. She will be discussing why it is important to floss and how water flossing (if string flossing isn't your thing) can be easier and more beneficial to your health. As Lyle says, it is so important to floss once a day as a means to prevent plaque from building up. "It starts building up within minutes of visiting your dental hygienist and can cause visible signs of infection in as little as two weeks. You simply can't rely on professionals alone to care for you. String flossing will not work for most people. You need the pulsating action of water flossing to clean bacteria out of deep pockets. Only water flossing can find its way into hard to reach places."

EPCS is an emerging technology that is just now moving into the national healthcare IT spotlight in part because of I-STOP. I-STOP mandates that all medications be prescribed electronically, including highly addictive opioids and other controlled substances. New York is the first state to require electronic prescribing, which is a major shift in how medications will be prescribed in the future. It is hoped that EPCS will streamline order workflow, reduce patient wait times for prescriptions, improve provider andpatient satisfaction, reduce prescription errors, and help meet Meaningful Use goals. It should help address prescription drug abuse, including opioids and other controlled substances.

What's “new in asthma?” It's important first to point out what is not new. Although there is not yet a cure for asthma, very effective therapies exist—and have existed for some time. Yet asthma continues to consume increasingly scarce health care resources, and to limit the lives of some 25 million Americans, including more than 7 million children. Is this changing? It is. While biomedical and clinical research continue to extend our understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease, and how to mitigate that through new therapies, what I see as most exciting are changes on other fronts: changes which have the potential to make the therapies that we have more impactful. At AAFA, we know that improving control of asthma leads to fewer emergency room visits and hospital admissions, so that payment models that transfer risk create strong incentives is to improve clinical outcomes. While asthma has not been the central focus of payment reform, it will often be in scope as payers and providers pilot new models to address common and costly chronic illness. This excerpt was taken from Dr. Cary Sennett's, CEO and President of AAFA, blog post. Click here to read more.

Dr. Farzad Mostashari, former National Coordinator for HIT and more recently a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution, has launched a new VC-backed company, Aledade. Aledade provides the smarts and some of the infrastructure to help independent primary care physicians form and join Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). ACOs are a new care delivery model in which doctors are paid to deliver the best care as opposed to the fee-for-service model that encourages them to do more care. Farzad notes in his blog that his tenure at Brookings allowed him to go on a healthcare "walkabout." He visited and talked to docs and healthcare wonks around the country and came away with 'a rare stereoscopic view of the change sweeping through healthcare - the anxiety of those with "one foot on the old business model's grave and the other foot on their new business model banana peel," mingled with the excitement of those who would disrupt the process.' He says, during the process, he also found his cause. "It's to help independent primary care doctors re-design their practices, and re-imagine their future...It's to support them with people who will stand beside them, with no interests other than theirs in mind. It's to promote new partnerships built on mutual respect, and business arrangements that they will truly reward them for the value that they uniquely can bring - in better care coordination, management of chornic diseases, and preventing disease and suffering. It's to achieve lower cost through better care and better health." Listen in on this fascinating discussion.

The Health Technology Forum is on an incredible growth trajectory. A few years ago, they were a Silicon Valley health tech meet-up. Now they have a national footprint with 4500 members and 13 chapters in 5 different countries: San Francisco, Dallas/FortWorth, San Diego, New York City, Atlanta, Washington DC, Austin, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Bangalore, and Manila. They have held close to 100 events world-wide, and some of them, like the upcoming Innovation Conference, have become “must attend” events in the health tech space. In this chat on TDWI Radio, we asked the Founder, Pronoy Saha, about his passion in health and technology and his upcoming "Innovation Conference". To give a sneak peak: Saha's passion is to improve access to health care globally using technology. To do so, he organized a hackathon this last weekend focused on behavioral health - a topic that is often ignored in the rush to produce fitness apps and wearables. He and his team have also organized their upcoming annual Health Technology Forum (HTF) "Innovation Conference", themed "Pathways to Sustainable Health." There are more than 75 speakers including keynoter, Dean Ornish MD of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute at UCSF; Stefano Bertozzi, MD, PhD, Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health; Geoffrey Clapp, CEO of Better, and Eric Bing, Director, Global Health at George W. Bush Institute. And as an added bonus all of the competitors in the hackathon (mentioned above) are invited to attend and the top 4 winners will be demo'ing at the meeting. Join us as Pronoy describes the journey. It should be fun.

When Francis Kong was five years old, his father sat him down and told him he had two choices in life - he could be a physician or he could be a failure. At the end of his second year at the Royal College of Surgeons, one of his professors told him that he should go and have fun on his spring break because once he was back, it would be heads down with no time off for many years. So, together with a couple of medical school buddies, he boarded a 747 to Barcelona, Spain for what he hoped would be two weeks of fun in the sun. As they attempted to land at the Barcelona airport, the plane experienced what Francis thought was turbulence – followed by a failed attempt to land. Shortly after that the intercom came on and the pilot made an announcement – but it was in Spanish. The only thing word he could understand was one that was being repeated over and over: “Emergencia, emergencia.” In those last few seconds, Francis saw in his mind's eye, his mom, his dad, his sisters and the faces of all of his mentors. “I told them I loved them very, very much. I thanked them for all of the gifts they had given me in my life. And I said, ‘goodbye' – I am so sorry I had to go now.” Francis survived his near-death experience but life for him would never be the same. He formed Edge Interns in College and learned how to mentor young people on a large scale. Then in 2012, he founded Edge Interns to help young people figure out what their dreams are and help them to make them come true as early as possible. There were 5 interns in Edge's first year, now there are more than 330 from very prestigious institutions around the country. To read the full article, click here.
