Encephalitis Lethargica: The Mysterious Pandemic That's Been Forgotten

Between 1918 and 1920, the Spanish Flu killed 50 million people worldwide.  This pandemic, arrived on the heels of WW1, and between the two events, nearly 5% of the world's population was killed.  But there was another pandemic occurring, one that is less well known and less frequently talked about, that remains a mystery to this day.  In the winter of 1916 in Europe, people were seeking medical attention for general malaise.  At first, it looked like a mild case of the flu with fever, headaches, and fatigue.  Many would recover, but some would begin exhibiting tremors and many slowed down mentally and physically, until they were completely immobile despite being conscious and alive.  The symptoms presented on a spectrum, but patients sometimes experienced lethargy or even obtundation, paralysis of eye muscles, rigid muscles, frozen posture, loss of speech, and sudden immobility.  In some cases, the progression was overnight.  In others, it took weeks to months.  Doctors called it Encephalitis Lethargica, but no one really understood it.  Some patients slept for days.  Others stayed awake, trapped inside bodies that no longer moved.  Hundreds of thousands of people lost the ability to walk and talk, and then in 1928 new cases just stopped appearing.  By then, however, there had been more than 1 million cases, and half of those had ended in death.  Those that did survive, often developed a post-encephalitic Parkinsonism leaving them rigid, slow, and unable to move normally for the rest of their lives. And then, just as mysteriously as it appeared… it vanished.  So what was this disease? A viral epidemic? A post-war complication? Something we still don't fully understand?  This week, we're diving into one of the most unsettling medical mysteries in modern history, Encephalitis Lethargica, also known as the Sleeping Sickness.Send us Fan MailSupport the showTheme song by INDA

In 2018, health and science journalist Alexandra Sifferlin began her investigation into the American diagnosis crisis: Why are so many people being misdiagnosed? What is the cost of this error? Who is trying to change the system—and what does a better healthcare system (for all of us) look like? The resulting book—The Elusive Body—is a fascinating read. Today, we cover the major parts of Sifferlin's investigation and what's unfolded even since she finished writing. For the show notes, head to my Substack.

PRE-ORDER MY NEW BOOK (OUT MAY 5, 2026)!!! — https://bit.ly/43BquPd Today, we're joined by my fellow high school English teacher and total girl's girl, Miss Molly Dugan. We're diving into the absolute chaos of being a teacher on the internet, from people trying to pit us against each other to the "sourdough baddie" comments that have basically become an inside joke at this point. We also get into the trauma of being bullied by our own students. Molly shares a story from her early teaching days about getting "dumped" and having 28 eighth graders basically tell her she's going to die alone. Plus, Gerry explains why he crashed out in his classroom this week. Write in and tell us: Have your students ever bullied you into changing your life? Takeaways: The Comedy Trap: Andrea explains why being asked to "do a joke" in a room full of 11:00 AM business majors is actually a form of torture. Sub Day Sabotage: Why coming back to a three-page sub note is the fastest way to make a teacher "crash out" on a Friday. The "Reverse Spider-Man": Andrea recounts a legendary (and slightly scarring) prank from a senior trip to Europe.  #surrogacy #ivf #surrogate Brittany's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pavinourway?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== A surrogacy journey can look “simple” from the outside, right up until it doesn't. Brittany joins us to share what it's like to be a gestational carrier who knows the fertility world firsthand, from years of trying to conceive to building her own family and then stepping back in to help someone else grow theirs. Her story is honest, detailed, and packed with the kind of real-life context you wish you could get before starting the surrogacy process. We talk through how she decided on surrogacy over egg donation, what mental health and family history can mean for eligibility, and how she weighed an agency path against an independent journey. Then things get wild: a literal website glitch leads her to the intended parents she ends up carrying for, and the match moves fast into medical clearance, psych screening, legal, and transfer prep. Brittany also explains transfer meds, travel logistics, working with a large IVF clinic, and why they were comfortable transferring untested embryos based on values and medical history. The biggest curveball comes after the first transfer, when her betas rise but no pregnancy can be located, leading to a diagnosis of pregnancy of unknown origin and methotrexate treatment. After the required waiting period, a second transfer sticks and results in a healthy baby, but not without heightened monitoring shaped by the parents' prior late-term losses. We also get into weekly BPPs, a breech baby who keeps flipping, and a planned induction that turns into a C-section where Brittany's self-advocacy (and knowing who makes decisions in the OR) changes everything. If you're considering becoming a surrogate, navigating IVF and embryo transfer, or just want a true surrogacy podcast story that doesn't skip the hard parts, this conversation will stay with you. **Discussion begins at 4:40**In late 2016, American diplomats stationed in Havana began reporting something strange.  It often started with a sound, followed by the symptoms: dizziness, nausea, migraines, memory problems, and in some cases, lasting brain injuries.  What began as a handful of mysterious health complaints soon spiraled into an international mystery.   Reports spread from Cuba to embassies and government posts around the world, affecting diplomats, intelligence officers, and their families.  Some experts believe the victims may have been targeted by a secret energy weapon.  Others argue the symptoms could be the result of environmental factors, stress, or even a phenomenon known as mass psychogenic illness.  As investigations unfolded, agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched inquiries, while Congress demanded answers. Meanwhile, scientists, intelligence officials, and journalists all began debating the same question: Was this a covert attack or a misunderstood medical mystery?  Whether it's a new form of warfare, an environmental anomaly, or something else entirely, the story of Havana Syndrome sits at the uneasy intersection of espionage, science, and conspiracy.Send a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

The symptoms started in kindergarten: Profuse vomiting, unexplained stomach issues and a sense of utter panic that no one could explain. For Katlyn Brooks, this wasn't just a ‘childhood phase’ - it was the beginning of a terrifying 20-year medical mystery…. The search for a physical cause turned into a mental health one, where therapy and antidepressants became the default solution. But, despite medication and regular therapy sessions, Katlyn's suffering only intensified. By high school, she knew the truth: this wasn't in her head. But realising that was one thing; getting the medical world to believe her was another. By April 2024, Katlyn’s body reached breaking point. Weighing just 40kg, and vomiting nonstop, she was admitted to hospital. There, she was eventually diagnosed with three conditions, including Craniocervical Instability (CCI). This structural failure left her just 2mm away from "internal decapitation", a condition with a 70% mortality rate. Today, Katlyn joins us to walk through her journey of medical mystery to the life-saving surgery that literally bolted her head back onto her spine. She discusses the "dark cloud" that lifted the moment her vagus nerve was decompressed and the reality of living with more than $1,000,000 of medical debt. This is the audio from an amazing webinar I did with Alloy Health. I was so fortunate to be interviewed by their community leader, Rachel Hughes. What I'm seeing clearly is that Gen X is leading the menopause conversation — we're asking better questions, demanding better answers, and refusing to be dismissed. At the same time, Millennials are shifting the focus toward prevention, not just treating disease after it shows up. That mindset matters, and it's changing healthcare. I talk a lot about why self-care isn't indulgent — it's essential if you want to thrive in midlife and beyond. That starts with education. You cannot make informed decisions about your body if no one ever taught you how hormones actually work. Hormones are not just reactive tools — they can be preventative, supporting long-term health when used thoughtfully and appropriately. Progesterone and testosterone play real, meaningful roles in women's health, and vaginal estrogen is both safe and incredibly effective for many women — despite how rarely it's discussed. We also have to talk about sex. Communication is foundational to a fulfilling sex life in midlife, and silence only benefits outdated narratives, not women. The bottom line? You have more control over your health than you've been led to believe. Empowerment doesn't come from perfection — it comes from understanding your body and advocating for yourself in a system that often won't do it for you. Cancer can be seen as a seed that only sprouts in the right soil—the body's inner landscape. Today, that soil is changing fast, and cancer rates are climbing, especially among young people. Our modern diet—packed with sugar, processed foods, and nonstop snacking—keeps the body flooded with signals to grow, not heal. But there's good news: by eating real, colorful foods and giving the body time to rest between meals, we can calm inflammation, balance our gut, and make our inner soil far less welcoming to disease. The power to shift the story lies in every bite and every pause we take. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Thomas Seyfried, how modern diets and constant eating create a fertile soil for disease. Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse Type 2 Diabetes naturally with fasting. His work on fasting has been cited by CNN, Time, The Atlantic, Forbes, The Toronto Star, and many other media outlets. His latest book is The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery. Dr. Thomas Seyfried is an American professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1976 and did his postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications, and his research focuses primarily on the mechanisms driving cancer, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases and calorie-restricted ketogenic diets in their prevention and treatment. He is the author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer and presently serves on the Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro editorial boards.
