Al Sedano, Jesse Starcher, Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich present our Comic Stripped: Logan's Run Movie and Comic Review! Logan's Run (1976) is an American science fiction action film directed by Michael Anderson and starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Farrah Fawcett, and Peter Ustinov. The screenplay by David Zelag Goodman is based on the 1967 novel Logan's Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. It depicts a utopian future society on the surface, revealed as a dystopia where the population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by killing everyone who reaches the age of 30. The story follows the actions of Logan 5, a "Sandman" who has terminated others who have attempted to escape death and is now faced with termination himself. Marvel Comics published a short-lived comic book series, which adapted the movie's story and briefly continued beyond it until the book was cancelled at issue #7. The first five issues were illustrated by George Perez, whom we are celebrating as part of the Super Blog Team UP. Book Vs Movie: “Logan's Run” The Cult Classic Novel & Film That Inspired Generations of SciFi Fans  Imagine living in a world where you can live as free as you please, but you have to allow yourself to be killed at 21 (or 30?) This dystopian tale comes from two science fiction authors, William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johson in 1976 with Logan's Run. Logan is a “Sandman” who chases “runners” who wish to escape their creepy fate.  The original story was inspired by the turbulent campus life in the 1960s and caught the imagination of SciFi fans everywhere. The setting is 2116, and from the “Little War,” it was decided that in order for earth to survive, the population needed to be kept artificially down. People live with a “palm flower” that changes color as they age. When they hit 21, it is called their ‘last day” and to report to “Sleepshop.” It is there they are killed using a pleasure-increasing toxic gas.  Logan being a Deep Sleep Operative, he can tell when people are trying to escape their fate and run to a free land called “Sanctuary.” He uses a gun called a “homer” because it can “home” their body heat and evaporate them. Sandmen also use martial arts and generally have no sympathy for runners.  Logan's love interest in “Jessica 6” distrusts him at first but eventually along with Logan's friend Francis they off to the Sanctuary. Francis, it turns out, is an oldster of 42 whose palm flower malfunctioned and he got by with plastic surgery to change his appearance Jessica and Logan are then sent off on a rocket outside of Mars to start their lives over.  The 1976 movie stars Michael York as Logan 5 and Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6. The movie changes the maximum age to 30 and this time the “last dayers” end their lives in a game called the “Carrousel” which causes them to evaporate in front of an audience.  In 2274, every person is implanted with a “life clock” that shows their age. Logan 5 and his friend Francis 7 are both Sandmen who one day kill a runner who had an “ankh” jewelry symbol. Turns out this symbol is for people who are looking for “Sanctuary” and that is how he identifies Jessica 6.  They go on the run together and there is quite a bit of wackiness with a robot named Box who wants to freeze and eat them, Washington DC mossed over and an old man with cats who wants to help them. There are also sexy costumes and special effects which were considered a big deal at the time. (Wow!)  So, between the original novel and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The journey of the 1967 story to the 1976 movie Biggest changes between book & movie The 1977 TV series that surprisingly did not take off The special effects of the time The cast: Michael York (Logan 5,) Jenny Agutter (Jessica 6,) Richard Jordan (Francis 7,) Roscoe Lee Browne (Box voice), Farrah Fawcett-Majors (Holly 13), and Peter Ustinov as the Old Man.  Clips used: Logan decides to run Logan's Run trailer “The Carousel”  Logan procures Jessica 6  Jessica and Logan meet “The Box” Music by Jerry Goldsmith Book Vs Movie is part of the Frolic Podcast Network. In this Podcast Episode i speak to Composer Marco Werba all the way from Rome. I connected with Marco a couple of years ago over which time he has written and produced the musical score for my debut indie film 'A Kidnap' for which i will always be grateful. I was interested in how Marco became a composer and where his interest started, in fact it was all to do with a classic film called 'Logans Run' (great film, see it!). We talk about him growing up in multilingual family and how he started singing in a small place called the VATICAN! Marcos journey is fascinating and although he has worked with some of the best filmmakers out there i was humbled that he had helped me and my film. Why? Well mainly because Marco is just a lovely human being who wants to help people no matter how big or small their film is. We need more people like Marco out there! Fingers crossed with Covid guidelines we should finally be holding a premier for 'A Kidnap' this July/August and also raise some money for charity in the process! - Check out links below to keep up with the latest on the film! What started as a discussion over the Twitter Profile of a Congressional candidate in North Carolina, led to a long and winding road for the Good Friar and the Rabbi. From the concept of “free will” leading to the idea of the “Social Gospel” which in turn leads to perceived existential threats drove economic interests that seemingly had little to nothing in common with religious interests to unite to oppose common threats. And developed into the religious-political entities that for the past FOUR decades have opposed the older religious-political entities. So in a world where we are told to keep religion out of our politics, what happened?

Join us as we enter the land of make believe from Mr. Rogers with our friend Dennis Foster to talk about “Logan's Run”. In the year 2274, young residents enjoy an idyllic, hedonistic lifestyle within the protective confines of a domed city. The general belief is that when each person turns 30, they are reincarnated for another blissful life cycle. Those who know the much darker truth become "runners" and flee to a hidden sanctuary. When law enforcement officer Logan (Michael York) goes undercover to locate the refuge, he winds up instead trying to initiate a revolution with runner Jessica. We have a =centrally planned ERE where the computer does most things for the people so they can just hang out at the Dallas Galleria wearing ridiculous clothes. The masses are propagandized into the myth of rebirth so most willingly accept the carousel as they believe they will be reincarnated/renewed - but this has never happened. This movie almost seems prophetic in many ways. Next week we celebrate the return of the great Keith Knight as we discuss the HUAC-related “Trumbo” about Hollywood players getting blacklisted for being accused of harboring communist sympathies. Show Notes: http://www.lastnighters.com/165 Reel Unconventional Film Analysis. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. We continue give me Sci-Fi or give me death month with a discussion of Logan’s Run. I find this film to be underrated. It certainly has problems from a technical story telling perspective, but it dives deep into a dystopian post apocalyptic world in which the remaining settlement has finite space and resource, and solves those issues by requiring everyone to die at 30. In order to make people willingly sacrifice themselves society has a myth that some, if worthy, will be renewed for a longer life. No one is ever renewed. With everyone knowing that death occurs at 30 society is understandably hedonistic. Eat, sleep, get it on and be merry because life ends at 30, you don’t have to worry about long term consequences. It is an interesting look at how a dystopia can be a utopia on the surface, and how society loses any drive to better themselves when they live a decadent and scarcity free life. Logan’s run is a flawed film, BUT, it makes you think about a lot of things, which not every film can do. Sci-Fi Malady RSS
