This week, Anna is joined by editor, author, book doula and creator of the term 'sober curious', Ruby Warrington. In this episode of The Therapy Edit, they discuss Ruby's One Thing: how society must turn the tables on their approach towards women without kids.Foregoing motherhood has traditionally marked a woman as "other." With no official place setting for her in our society, she has hovered on the sidelines: the quirky girl, the neurotic career obsessive, the "eccentric" aunt. Instead of continuing to paint women without kids as sad, self-obsessed, or somehow dysfunctional, what if we saw them as boldly forging a new vision for a fully autonomous womankind? Or as journalist and thought leader Ruby asks, what if being a woman without kids were in fact its own kind of legacy? We hope you find Rubys words insightful. You can find Ruby on Instagram hereOrder Ruby's book 'Women Without Kids' here.Order Ruby's book 'Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol' here.

So, 2020 has been a crazy year, right? Where do I even begin? A whole lot has shifted in my life and in my business over the last year, which is something I imagine a lot of you have been experiencing as well. So, I just wanted to take this end-of-year opportunity to check in with you and share a little about what’s been going on in my life and business, and how my family and I have been navigating life in quarantine. And I also have a pretty big announcement about the show and our future here at the Working Parent Resource Podcast at the end of this episode too. In the introduction of my book, I write about how all of the changes we’re experiencing with this coronavirus is presenting us with an opportunity to slow down and take stock of where we are in every area of our lives. I know we’re all feeling it right now. I know times are incredibly tough, and for some families this time is shattering literally everything you thought you could rely on in life. It has broken you down to your core. But the longer this virus controls our lives, the more I believe this is the whole point. The world has shifted. I think every system, every structure, every norm we’ve taken for granted for thousands of years, all of the patterns of the past, it’s all being destroyed so we can re-build something better, something that’s more appropriate for the times we’re actually living in now. It’s time for us to start fresh, to integrate so many lessons we’ve learned as a species. We can do better, and this is our chance to create a new life for ourselves, and as a society. As hard as it is to believe, I really don’t think we’ll be going back to the way things were prior to 2020. And I for one believe this is a gift. There are so many things about our prior lives that simply didn’t work for a lot of people, in all aspects of life. Please take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get rid of ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING, that is no longer serving you. Focus on what brings you joy and deep meaning and fulfillment. Take care of your health and your relationships. Do what you need to do for you, and don’t feel guilty about it. I know this is much easier said than done, and I also know that many of us, including me, are in a much more privileged position situation than others are. Do what you need to do to survive first, but as soon as you manage to come up for air, take a deep breath and start exploring how you can create a life you no longer need to just survive. Start creating a life you truly love. After all, we yoga. We green juice. We meditate. We self-care. And yet, come the end of a long work day, the start of a weekend, an awkward social situation, we drink. One glass of wine turns into two turns into a bottle. In the face of how we care for ourselves otherwise, it’s hard to avoid how alcohol really makes us feel… terrible. How different would our lives be if we stopped drinking on autopilot? If we stopped drinking altogether? Really different, it turns out. Really better. Frank, funny, and always judgment free, Sober Curious is a bold guide to choosing to live hangover-free, from Ruby Warrington, one of the leading voices of the new sobriety movement. Drawing on research, expert interviews, and personal narrative, Sober Curious is a radical take down of the myths that keep so many of us drinking. Inspiring, timely, and blame free, Sober Curious is both conversation starter and handbook—essential reading that empowers readers to transform their relationship with alcohol, so we can lead our most fulfilling lives.” ~ Good Reads Quote “You can drink all the green juice, dodge all the gluten, and run around town in all the fancy yoga pants you like—but it means nothing if you’re not also addressing your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.” Ruby Warrington, Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol #sobercurious #rubywarrington #sober #sobriety #recovery #alcoholism #soberlifestyle --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soberisdope/message

First off before we jump into this conversation I want to share that recording this episode was really valuable for me as an individual.  For years now, I have been sober curious without a title for how to describe it.  Thank goodness for my guest today coming up with something as cool as “sober curious,” and as accurate for what I know to be a profound inner journey. DOWNLOAD MIRACLE MEDITATION NOW! We have long lived in a culture where drinking alcohol is a very black and white conversation.  Some people do and others don't. For those that don't, it has often been viewed that there must be a significant issue with it, causing one to abstain altogether.  What I love so much is a brand new conversation that has risen to the surface spawn from an inner question on the role of alcohol in our lives. My guest today has started not only a valid and important conversation, but a loving one that invites us to look under the surface into our own lives; and ask ourselves the questions, “ Why we do what we do?”  “What is driving our choices?” and “what does wellness look like for us?” Any journey we take into self will ultimately lead us to some big and critically important questions. I am so excited to share this particular conversation with you. I even share a bit about my own choices regarding alcohol and what I discovered along my own path of asking the bigger questions. In This Podcast Episode We Talked About... The role that alcohol takes in our lives Getting curious about what drives the desire to drink Defining what wellness is for you My own journey into Sober Curious Why it is important to be curious about our lives and choices British writer, author and thought-leader, Ruby Warrington joins me on the show today.  She was formerly the Features Editor on the UK Sunday Times Style supplement. She is also the co-founder of “sober curious” events series Club SÖDA NYC and online spiritual mentoring program Moon Club. Her first book, Material Girl, Mystical World: The Now Age Guide to a High Vibe Life, showed us how to bring in new practices to support a high vibe life and her new book Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Laser Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol, is fantastic and we are talking all about it today on the show. It’s easy to imagine the world in black and white terms, especially when it comes to things like alcohol use. However, there are always gray areas, and questioning your drinking doesn’t necessarily mean that you need rehab or AA. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you should keep drinking the way you are now, either. Today’s guest calls this “sober curiosity.” Ruby Warrington is a British writer who currently lives and works in New York. She was the former Features Editor of the UK Sunday Times Style supplement. She is the Founder of The Numinous, and the author of two books: Material Girl, Mystical World: The New Age Guide to a High Vibe Life, and Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Laser Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol. Ruby is also the co-founder of an online spiritual mentoring program Moon Club and the “sober curious” events series Club SÖDA (Sober Or Debating Abstinence) NYC. “For me, ultimately removing substances is cultivating more presence in my life.” In today’s episode, Ruby talks about her experiences both before and after changing her relationship with alcohol. She describes dealing with mounting anxiety, unhappiness, and a feeling of purposelessness, despite her successful career in media, and she talks about making the decision to move to New York in the middle of this existential crisis. Ruby said that she’d checked out AA in the past, but that the stories there didn’t reflect her own experiences with alcohol. She knew that there must be others like her, and that’s why she partnered with a meditation coach and began arranging events for the sober curious. Ruby also talks about triggers and FOMA (Fear of Missing Alcohol) that people might experience at events when they’re trying to avoid drinking themselves. Ruby explains that her best advice is to accept and acknowledge your feelings, but don’t avoid the situations. Allow yourself to feel whatever you feel, then keep going, and remember that most other people in the room would feel the same way if the alcohol were removed. This interview was fascinating to me as someone who became intrigued with the scientific viability of astrology prior to diving deeply into other esoteric studies of consciousness. Personally I believe astrological natal charts can be more accurate than some of the most prevalent personality tests businesses use today like Meyers Briggs, Jungian personality tests, or DISC Profiles. I’ll spare you my thoughts on the scientific viability of a proper natal chart for now. This conversation is not about astrology.I think it’s important to share what people like Ruby Warrington are doing in the business world. Best known for her widely popular online magazine, The Numinous, Ruby also speaks openly about integrating mysticism into her life in the fashion industry in London in her previous book Material Girl Mystical World. But even more impressive to me, Ruby now works with big brands like Soho House, Unilever, Buick, Lululemon and TopShop who are looking to integrate what she calls “now age” mysticism into their brands. Mysticism, from a scientific and psychological prospective, which is how I tend to view things, is really just another form of introspection. So the work that Ruby does for brands, from a corporate standpoint, is indicative of a major shift in perception for corporations. In this conversation we discuss Ruby’s career, her relationship to alcohol and thoughts on plant medicines and psychedelics, and her latest initiative as the creator of the Sober Curious Movement. That’s really the deep part of this conversation – delving into the the ideas and social constructs we have built around alcohol.
