If you've ever faced the unsolicited question, “When are you having kids?” or the comment, “But you'd be such a great mother,” this episode is here to offer support and perspective. Karena sits down with Ruby Warrington, author, podcast host, and creator of the Sober Curious movement, whose new book and podcast, Women Without Kids, is reframing what it means to choose a child-free life. In this conversation, Ruby and Karena explore how complex family histories, including experiences of parentification, shaped their views on motherhood. They discuss how both couples have navigated the decision to remain child-free, managed familial and societal pressures and navigated the isolating “othering” that many child-free women experience. This episode encourages open, compassionate dialogue that destigmatizes and honors women's choices, celebrating the courage it takes to live authentically and embrace a path that is deeply personal and uniquely fulfilling.(00:00:00) Introductions(00:04:51) How The Way We Were Mothered Influences the Decision to Mother(00:17:57) Normalizing The Nuances of Being Child-Free(00:27:16) Facing Genetic Challenges & Generational Stigmas(00:42:22) Creating Chosen Family, Embracing Empathy & Redefining NormsClick here for full show notesGuest Info:• Website: rubywarrington.com• Instagram: @rubywarrington• Podcast: Women Without Kids• Read: Women Without Kids by Ruby WarringtonResources:• Read: The Big Silence: A Daughter's Memoir of Mental Illness and Healing • Therapy For All: Resources for those in need• Thank you to our partners! Today we're talking to Ruby Warrington all about being a Woman Without Kids, being "a village person," and the nuances of being child-free (by choice or by circumstance). IN THIS EPISODE, we get extremely candid as we talk about: The ways the parenthood vs. non-parenthood discussion has evolved, and ways it hasn't The "motherhood spectrum" vs. the motherhood binary Other people's opinions and cultural expectations / "noise" around motherhood, and how that affects us Our inner "noise" around motherhood, and how that affects us A new spin on the conversations around love and regret Navigating grief when you wanted to be a parent but it wasn't in the cards (childfree by circumstance) How to create a movement that matters ...and SO much more!  Ruby Warrington is a British-born author and editor, perhaps best known as the creator of the term “sober curious”. Her 2018 book and million-download podcast of the same title has helped to spearhead a global movement to reevaluate our relationship with alcohol. Her latest book, Women Without Kids, asks: “Instead of continuing to paint childfree women as sad, self-obsessed, or somehow dysfunctional, what if we saw them as boldly forging a first-in-a-civilization vision for a fully autonomous womankind? What if being a woman without kids was in fact its own kind of legacy?” Ruby's other works include Material Girl, Mystical World, The Numinous Astro Deck, and The Sober Curious Reset. With more than 20 years of experience as a lifestyle journalist and editor, Ruby is also the founder of self-publishing imprint Numinous Books and is known as a true thought leader in the “Now Age” wellness space. ~ SHOW NOTES: Find Ruby at https://www.rubywarrington.com/ and on Instagram @rubywarrington Buy WOMEN WITHOUT KIDS Attend the CELEBRATE BEING CHILDFREE retreat at Kripalu with Rachel Cargle ~ BUY WANT YOUR SELF on... One in four Americans is familiar with the term "sober curious", and author Ruby Warrington is the reason why. In this episode of The Selfish Gift, Ruby and host Maggie Langrick discuss the book that sparked the Sober Curious movement, as well as Ruby's new book, Women Without Kids. A common theme tying Ruby's books together is the importance of knowing oneself and being fully present in life, questioning societal expectations that can hinder this process, and embracing a rebellious spirit. Ruby also delves into the global trend of women reconsidering motherhood and the ecological and economic implications of population decline. As longtime book editors, Maggie and Ruby discuss the intersection of personal narrative and prescriptive nonfiction, and what new authors should consider when it comes to choosing a structure for their nonfiction book. Ruby opens up about her writing process, and how she navigates the public life/private life boundary, which can be especially tricky when writing about deeply personal—and possibly controversial—topics. In this episode, you'll learn:• The term Sober Curious coined by Ruby Warrington has sparked a global movement and given language to a mindset of exploring one's relationship with alcohol.• Choosing to be sober curious or child-free is a personal orientation that should be normalized, allowing individuals to make conscious choices about their own lives.• The decline in birth rates globally and the rise of women without kids challenge societal expectations and have ecological and economic implications.• Ruby Warrington's work encourages individuals to know themselves, be present, and question societal messages, embracing a rebellious spirit.• Living with integrity and authenticity means valuing the preciousness of the life you are living and standing firm in your integrity despite societal pressure.• When writing a nonfiction book, it's important to consider your storytelling style and how you like to deliver information.• A good structure is essential for any nonfiction book, regardless of the style.• Ruby Warrington takes a research-heavy approach to writing, collecting articles, research, and ideas before creating a loose structure for her books. For more, check outhttps://www.rubywarrington.com/https://www.the-numinous.com/And followhttps://instagram.com/rubywarringtonhttps://instagram.com/numinous_bookshttps://instagram.com/maggielangrickhttps://instagram.com/selfishgiftpodcasthttps://instagram.com/wonderwellpress#authoradvice #sobercurious #alcoholfree #publishingadvice #nonfiction #purpose #lifepurpose #authenticity #womenwithoutkids #childfree #feminist

Today's the day, Shandies! We've been wanting to cover the topic of childlessness for quite some time, and when Sharleen read Ruby Warrington's newest book, Women Without Kids, she wouldn't take no for an answer in getting Ruby on the podcast! This conversation is for every person, with or without kids. Few books have impacted Sharleen the way Ruby's did, and today we dive deep into the world of Womanhood WITHOUT Motherhood. How often have you heard terms like "maternal instinct" and "labor of love", or phrases like "You don't know true love until you have children" and "But who will look after you when you're old?" Today, with Ruby Warrington's expertise, we examine The Motherhood Spectrum, the truth behind "having it all", and whether or not we can argue with "nature". We discuss the (very real) fear of regret, finding meaning and legacy as a non-parent, the guilt in not bestowing our parents with grandchildren, how to age as a woman in our youth-obsessed society, and of course, Climate Change. This conversation will hopefully guide your heart and help you hear to something inside yourself, versus listening to what so many of us have been conditioned to believe for a lifetime. My guest this week is Women Without Kids author, Ruby Warrington. We're are at a fascinating time in history – where, both in the UK, US, and across almost every developed nation like Switzerland, Italy, Japan and South Korea, adults are having children later in life – or, indeed, not at all. While statistics vary, it is a recognised trend – and that trend is relevant to all of us whether we have children now or in the future, or don't. Author Ruby Warrington, for this week's episode, has tackled that subject in her latest book, Women Without Kids – a timely non-fiction investigation into what it means to be, as it says on the tin, a woman without children today, with the help of expert insights from philosophers, anthropologists, social scientists and other writers. This is naturally a topic that lends itself an alonement slant, too – we all know that parenthood isn't exactly famed for its abundant alone time, but what about a life, and heterosexual relationship, that takes place without it? Ruby, who is now in her mid-forties and has been with her husband Simon for over 20 years, shares the answers to that question, and many more – offering so many insightful perspectives into being childfree by choice. We discuss, among other things:Why alone, for Ruby, means ‘sovereignty' [3:57]The value of having strong connections in your life as insurance against loneliness [8:30]The link between Ruby's introversion and her choice to be childfree [11:54]Why alone time is important in Ruby's marriage [15:04]How Ruby envied her father's lifestyle growing up [21:39]Ruby's experience of abortion [29:32]When Ruby questioned whether she did want kids [35:09]Chosen families and ‘other mothers' [39:18]What Ruby gained through the process of writing her latest bookRuby's favourite kind of alone time [47:47]You can purchase Women Without Kids from all good bookshops, and online.Subscribe to my weekly email newsletter at francescaspecter.substack.com to follow my personal writing plus podcast bonus content. You can also order my book, Alonement: How To Be Alone and Absolutely Own It, which is based on this very podcast, now from Amazon,  Waterstones and Bookshop.org.Thank you to WestLab for sponsoring this season of the podcast. Over the past year, through New Legacy Radio, New Legacy Institute has worked to provide a breadth of perspectives from thought leaders, activists, and members of our community, to create a platform of visibility and social justice for our collective community of people without children. We continue to assess the current state of things for our community, from workplace policy, housing and taxation, to global, national policies, which most often exclude and fail to consider the needs of people without children, and those who are single, and in diverse, legally unrecognized relationships. We also have a sense of urgency in addressing the extremist narratives, which are projected onto women, when it comes to reproductive, relational and full life autonomy. In today's episode we will discuss current cultural and policy narratives, which advocate for the control of women's lives. Further, women without children, have been specifically targeted and blamed for unsubstantiated claims of population “crises” across the globe. Therefore, it is vital that we collectively challenge the weaponization of these false narratives, for our community and beyond. Join us for a conversation addressing these issues, and more, with today's guest, Ruby Warrington. As a recognized thought leader, Ruby brings a unique, in-depth perspective to the complexities and priorities of our community, and the culture narratives, which impact women without children. She is the author of the brilliant, highly recommended book, “Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood. “Women Without Kids” published by Sounds True, and is out today!

“There's something incredibly dangerous to the status quo about us no longer feeling ashamed for choosing lives that are right for us, and within that choosing to direct our creative life force energy that we all embody into whatever we so choose.” - Ruby Warrington Today I delve into the complex and often ignored topic of non-motherhood with author Ruby Warrington. Ruby wrote “Women Without Kids” to challenge the prevailing societal narratives surrounding motherhood and unravel the inherent binary thinking that erases the diversity of human relationships and caregiving experiences. We explore the broad motherhood spectrum, which encompasses women who are unable to have children and those who consciously choose not to. Ruby passionately dissects the harmful effects of pronatalism, an ideology that values parents over non-parents within a colonial capitalist framework. Throughout our conversation, we emphasize the vital role of non-parents, particularly women, in societal transformation amid the daunting challenges of climate impact and economic collapse. Furthermore, we explore the notion of deviance and shame associated with choosing alternative paths in life and how shedding shame can unleash our creative potential and empower us to challenge the status quo. Also in this episode: breaking down the mommy binary undoing the ideology of valuing parents over non-parents within colonial capitalism women without kids as a necessary vital part of societal transformation among decimating climate impact and economic collapse found family and less hierarchical ways of creating community and family what caregiving looks like within and outside the role of motherhood social life in berlin and the value of community engagement undoing shame of being “deviant” or “other” and taking back our creative potential Ruby Warrington is creator of the term Sober Curious. Jessica shares for the first time her feelings on kids, and Ruby shares her journey of getting to a clear, convicted stance of being a woman without kids. They discuss the need to think about family and community differently, finding community, prioritizing friendships, and women looking out for one another. What is “woman” if not mother? This is one of the many thought-provoking questions Ruby Warrington asks in her book, Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood. This is a book designed to confront the ways we normalize women as mothers and stigmatize women who don't have children. It takes on the stubbornly taboo topic of women without children, and offers a timely and brave reframing of what it means not to be a mom, instead of continuing to paint women without kids as “sad, self-obsessed, or somehow dysfunctional.”   Guest Bio Ruby Warrington is a British-born author, editor, and publishing consultant. Ruby Warrington has staked out ground in a number of areas. She is the founder of the self-publishing platform The Numinous and also a leading figure in the “sober curious” movement; she coined the term and is also the author of the 2018 book of the same name. She visited The Unspeakable to talk about a subject very close to Meghan's heart; the decision not to have kids. In her new book Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood, Ruby examines the rise in women (and men) who are childless--either by choice or circumstance--and reports on the “global reproduction slowdown” of the last several decades. She shares her own story and reflects on how much (or how little) the family dynamics of her own childhood shaped her choice not to become a mother. She and Meghan talk about how childless people are planning for their old age, the degree to which concerns about climate change are affecting people's choices, and whether there really is a global population crisis (and if so, which direction it's going in).   For paying subscribers to the Unspeakable Susbtack, Ruby stays overtime for a topic that has never been covered on the podcast; astrology! Meghan is skeptical about the whole thing (in other words, a typical Aquarius) but nonetheless interested in what her birth chart might tell her about her struggles of late. They also talk at length about the sober curious movement, including how and why Ruby began hosting sober curious events and how this approach is different from traditional twelve-step programs. Meghan even shares a bit about her still-in-progress year off from drinking.     Guest Bio: Ruby Warrington is the author of Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood and is the creator of the term “sober curious." In  the episode we discuss:-Kelly's definition of “mother hunger” and how she came up with the term.-Why 50% of the population experience mother hunger and how it manifests in issues around food and love.-What causes mother hunger - and why this is often the result of an epigenetic inheritance.-Why structural issues make it harder for mothers and babies to bond - and the lifelong attachment issues that can result from this.-How mother hunger impacts our procreative choices and how we may feel about becoming mothers ourselves.-The links between mother hunger, anorexia, and being “a-reproductive” (i.e. having no desire to reproduce).-The impact of a lack of paid parental leave on mother hunger-Why choosing not to have a child can be the most “loving” choice if we are aware that our capacity to mother is being compromised.-Why our materialistic, consumer culture is just another substitute mother - and a way we seek to soothe our mother hunger.Learn more about Kelly and her work HERE and check out Mother Hunger HERE.You can get your copy of Women Without Kids: The Revolutionary Rise of an Unsung Sisterhood HERE.
