Ringo and Ridgey sit down with Keegan Hirst—a man who’s tackled more than just opponents on the rugby field. Keegan made headlines in 2015 as the first British rugby league player to come out as gay while still playing professionally but his story is far deeper than a single headline. From growing up under the weight of rigid masculinity to living a double life, Keegan opens up about the long, painful road to self-acceptance and the toll internalised homophobia can take when silence feels safer than truth. The lads dive into the tricky terrain of masculinity, mental health and male vulnerability—spoiler: real men do cry, and Keegan’s proof that it takes guts to be honest. He shares how language, peer pressure and fear of judgment kept him from living authentically for years. We talk about the ripple effects of coming out, from strained family dynamics to the liberating moment of finally being able to exhale. Keegan also gets into his work as a coach for gay men, helping others navigate the same fears he once faced and why teaching kids about acceptance and emotional intelligence is as important as teaching them to tie their shoes. From the locker room to late-night self-reflection, Keegan’s story is a powerful reminder that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s freedom. Whether you’ve faced your own identity battles or just want to understand the inner world of someone who has, this one hits deep. We talk shame, survival and the courage it takes to live in your truth—plus why "straight-acting" is a term best left in the bin. It’s honest, raw, and proof that breaking the mould isn’t easy—but it’s worth it. We've all heard that phrase "work smarter, not harder." But has anyone actually told you what that means in practice? For those of us leading change and transformation, the gap between working ourselves to the bone and actually creating impact can feel frustratingly wide. This week, Nellie speaks to Chris Hirst, former Global CEO of Havas Creative, and author of ‘No Bullshit Change', ‘No Bullshit Leadership', and the upcoming ‘Indispensable: The No Bullshit Guide to Career Success'. Chris reveals a startling reality: most change leaders deliver 80% of their actual value in just 20% of their time. The rest? It's what he calls "fluff and filler" that's eating our productivity alive.Chris tackles a provocative idea – that identifying and focusing on the vital 20% doesn't require special talent, just deliberate practice and clear priorities. You'll learn practical approaches to reclaim your calendar (including his Monday morning 10% rule), run meetings that actually accomplish something, create presentations that engage rather than bore, and communicate in ways that drive action.Whether you're leading organizational change and transformation or building your own career, these straightforward techniques for leadership, clarity, and execution will help you stop wasting time and become truly indispensable.----Connect with:Nellie WartoftCEO of TigerhallChair of the Executive Council for Leading Change (ECLC)nellie@tigerhall.com Find Chris' upcoming book here.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Indispensable-Seven-Ways-Thrive-Workplace/dp/1529051754 ----Breathe by RYGO | https://soundcloud.com/francesco-rigolonEverything You Need Is By Your Side by Vlad Gluschenko |Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US

Here at Red Wine & Blue, we talk a lot about “troublemakers” and “making good trouble” (inspired in part by the late great John Lewis). Our network TroubleNation is made up of hundreds of local grassroots groups across the country — women like Kristi, a mom and former teacher in California who's been standing up for the public schools in her area.Troublemakers band together with other badass women in their communities who share their values. They make things better for their kids, friends, and neighbors. On the other hand, “chaos causers,” as Kristi calls them in this week's podcast episode, come in from the outside to disrupt communities. Groups like Moms for Liberty and the Proud Boys aren't listening to local communities and they certainly aren't making good trouble. They're just causing chaos. This week we talked to Kristi about how she and a group of other moms started getting together to drink wine and talk about how to stand up for their local schools. You can learn more in this video about how they found the courage to stand up to literal armed extremists in their schools. Kristi also started an organization called Our Schools USA dedicated to empowering parents and students to protect quality public education. The last week has been filled with bad news on the national level. Trump is the ultimate chaos causer and it can be hard to stay positive in the face of his many (many many) harmful policies. But there are a lot of women like Kristi out there making good trouble and standing up to the chaos causers. When they go low, we go local.Let's thank Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde for standing up to Donald Trump and calling for mercy — especially immigrants and LGBTQ+ children. And we will be back to our regularly scheduled programming in May. Elder Hirst's talk is all about love! He speaks powerfully about how personal God's love is for each of us. And he reminds us of how we can then show that love to others. “I wonder, if Jesus were to choose a place where you and He could meet, a private place where you would be able to have a singular focus on Him, might He choose your unique place of personal suffering, the place of your deepest need, where no one else can go? Somewhere you feel so lonely that you must truly be all alone but you aren't quite, a place to which perhaps only He has travelled but actually has already prepared to meet you there when you arrive? If you are waiting for Him to come, might He already be there and within reach?” Where and how do you feel God's love? “If you do feel filled with love in this season of your life, please try and hold on to it as effectively as a sieve holds water. Splash it everywhere you go. One of the miracles of the divine economy is that when we try to share Jesus's love, we find ourselves being filled up in a variation of the principle that ‘whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.'” How can you show love to others? How Women Create Businesses Differently with Katharine Campbell Hirst

For years Katharine Campbell Hirst wanted THE BOOK about how women create businesses differently, and it didn't exist. Then she was waiting until she was a big enough vessel to write this book. A big ah-ha! came when she considered taking a researcher approach by interviewing women business owners with 7-, 8-, and 9-figure businesses that they run their own way. This “quest” is called The Baubo Project, named after the goddess who helped Demeter get her mojo back after her daughter Persephone was abducted. Katharine embodies her own teachings in this project by letting go of timelines and rules about how a book is done. The book is birthing itself on its own timeline. As a coach for entrepreneurs and executives, Katharine's work lives at the intersection of business and psychology. In this episode, she shares her three stages of coaching as well as how to get unstuck when fallow periods arrive. Her invitation: what if you just started from what feels good and pulls you in the first place? Her quest is to help women remember how they create when they create in their own way. This episode will help you release any notions of a “business playbook” and remember that you can do things your own way. Bring on the self authority and trust! Katharine took the Force of Nature Quiz. She's an Earthquake, here to shake things up. She has the unique gift of seeing underneath what's happening as women try to fit in a masculine world. Listen in to this conversation to wake up and be reminded that it's never too late to build a new thing or rebuild an existing business from a place of alignment. In the aftermath of the First World War the Western great powers sought to redefine international norms according to their liberal vision. They introduced Western-led multilateral organizations to regulate cross-border flows which became pivotal in the making of an interconnected global order.  In contrast to this well-studied transformation, in Against the Liberal Order: The Soviet Union, Turkey, and Statist Internationalism, 1919-1939 (Oxford University Press, 2024), Samuel Hirst considers in detail for the first time the responses of the defeated interwar Soviet Union and early Republican Turkey who challenged this new order with a reactive and distinctly state-led international politics. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk took up arms in 1920 to overturn the terms of the Paris settlement, Vladimir Lenin provided military and economic aid as part of a partnership that both sides described as anti-imperialist. Over the course of the next two decades, the Soviet and Turkish states coordinated joint measures to accelerate development in spheres ranging from aviation to linguistics. Most importantly, Soviet engineers and architects helped colleagues in Ankara launch a five-year plan and build massive state-owned factories to produce textiles and replace Western imports. Whilst the Kemalists' cooperation with the Bolsheviks has often been described as pragmatic, this book demonstrates that Moscow and Ankara actually came together in an ideological convergence rooted in anxiety about underdevelopment relative to the West, gradually arriving at statist internationalism as an alternative to Western liberal internationalism. Drawing on extensive archival research and offering an often-ignored and non-Western perspective on the history of international relations and diplomacy, Against the Liberal Order presents a novel interpretation of the international order of the interwar period that crosses the borders of historical disciplines and contributes to questions of current concern in world politics. Hello there! I'm glad you're here!  My guest in episode 299 is Jen Hirst, Sober Coach, and founder of Lighthouse Sobriety, who is here to help you create more structure in your day by adding habits that will help you maintain sobriety. One of the things I appreciate about Jen is her practical approach to getting and staying sober. And, her support that she shares on Instagram! I reached out to Jen to ask her to share her story and talk about how habits you can start today will help you stay alcohol-free. Our conversation centered around essential daily habits that can help maintain a long-lasting, alcohol-free lifestyle. Jen's insights are grounded in her journey and the experiences of those she's helped through her coaching. Jen decided to quit drinking after waking up in detox for the second time. Her life was in chaos, and she was tired of feeling terrible and losing control. She had no car, and no money, and her health was at risk. Jen realized that as long as she didn't drink, things couldn't get any worse. She chose to stop and focused on doing the next right thing, gradually rebuilding her life. Her main reason for quitting was to create a better future for herself and her family. The habits we discuss will help you abstain from alcohol and add more personal development and self-care to your alcohol-free lifestyle.  Thank you for listening!  To read this episode's full show notes, click here.    You can connect with Jen here: Lighthouse Sobriety Jen Hirst's Instagram Jen's Coaching Group Resources Mentioned This Naked Mind by Annie Grace Beyond Booze by Sarah Rusbatch Atomic Habits by James Clear Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg   Let me help you make living alcohol-free in midlife a better experience! This week, I'm excited to revisit this conversation with Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst discussing their book, Workstyle: A revolution for well being, productivity and society. They coined the term nearly a decade ago during an inspired conversation at a pub. Little did they know that that conversation would lead them to co-found the multi-million pound social enterprise Hoxby to test and prove the concept of workstyle.  Today Hoxby has helped thousands of workstylers around the world to set, project and respect their own workstyles. They have set up their own longitudinal research study into the link between autonomy, productivity and wellbeing and have delivered projects for some of the biggest businesses in the world including Unilever, Amazon, AIA, and Merck. Forbes.com have described them as 'creating the freelance revolution 3.0' and they have been featured in the FT, Times, Telegraph, Stylist, Marie Claire, Metro and The Guardian, among others. I really enjoyed this book and believe that it will start to help countless people and businesses find relief from their work conditioning, inspire them to create a workstyle for themselves, and enable them to take part in the most significant change to working practices since 1817. By giving you the complete freedom to identify and pursue a way of working which fits around the unique nature of your lifestyle, this book can teach us how to be well, work better and do great things on our own time.  Connect with Lizzie and Alex  Website Book  Lizzie's Instagram Alex's Instagram  Connect with Erik: Facebook  LinkedIn  Instagram Threads This Podcast is Powered By: Descript Descript 101 Castmagic Ecamm Podpage Rodecaster Pro Top Productivity Books List Make sure to support the show by checking out the sponsors!
