The Working Parent Resource is a place where we have thoughtful discussions, share personal stories, and provide practical advice for ambitious working parents who actually want to enjoy being a working parent. Every week we tackle a brand new topic related to working parenthood to help you overcom…
So, 2020 has been a crazy year, right? Where do I even begin? A whole lot has shifted in my life and in my business over the last year, which is something I imagine a lot of you have been experiencing as well. So, I just wanted to take this end-of-year opportunity to check in with you and share a little about what’s been going on in my life and business, and how my family and I have been navigating life in quarantine. And I also have a pretty big announcement about the show and our future here at the Working Parent Resource Podcast at the end of this episode too. In the introduction of my book, I write about how all of the changes we’re experiencing with this coronavirus is presenting us with an opportunity to slow down and take stock of where we are in every area of our lives. I know we’re all feeling it right now. I know times are incredibly tough, and for some families this time is shattering literally everything you thought you could rely on in life. It has broken you down to your core. But the longer this virus controls our lives, the more I believe this is the whole point. The world has shifted. I think every system, every structure, every norm we’ve taken for granted for thousands of years, all of the patterns of the past, it’s all being destroyed so we can re-build something better, something that’s more appropriate for the times we’re actually living in now. It’s time for us to start fresh, to integrate so many lessons we’ve learned as a species. We can do better, and this is our chance to create a new life for ourselves, and as a society. As hard as it is to believe, I really don’t think we’ll be going back to the way things were prior to 2020. And I for one believe this is a gift. There are so many things about our prior lives that simply didn’t work for a lot of people, in all aspects of life. Please take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get rid of ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING, that is no longer serving you. Focus on what brings you joy and deep meaning and fulfillment. Take care of your health and your relationships. Do what you need to do for you, and don’t feel guilty about it. I know this is much easier said than done, and I also know that many of us, including me, are in a much more privileged position situation than others are. Do what you need to do to survive first, but as soon as you manage to come up for air, take a deep breath and start exploring how you can create a life you no longer need to just survive. Start creating a life you truly love. Today we’re chatting with Amy McKeown, who is an award-winning health, mental health and wellbeing consultant. She coaches organizations of all sizes to build strategies with are both innovative and measurable, whilst providing unique expertise in implementing said strategies. Amy is also a respected thought-leader within her field, sharing her advice regularly on LinkedIn and at speaker events such as Mad World. Amy is also passionate about women's health and is actively campaigning to change the Equality Act 2010 to provide protection for families experiencing miscarriage or pregnancy loss. As I release this episode, we’re heading into what experts are calling the darkest time of the coronavirus pandemic. Here in the United States and around the world, people of all ages are getting diagnosed, hospitalized, and are dying at unprecedented rates. Families have lost their routines, their childcare, their livelihoods, they’ve lost family members, and their very sense of sanity. Businesses around the world have wondered how they can support their employees, whether those employees work at home or are essential workers who need to be on site. Working parents and others struggle every day to figure out how to help their kids with school and get their work done while managing the other necessary aspects of life. And that’s just if they’ve been the lucky ones who haven’t gotten sick throughout this pandemic so far. It’s a really difficult time for everyone for so, so many reasons, and we need mental health support both at home and at work more than ever. There are leadership experts and other “well-being experts” out there who have offered their services to individuals and organizations for many years. Amy and I have both noticed a trend in people who are not trained in mental health offering services that they simply don’t have any training or qualifications to provide. And it scares us both. I reached out to Amy a few months ago to get her thoughts on why this is happening, and how consumers, again both individuals AND companies, can filter out qualified mental health providers from those who may cause more harm than good. In this episode we’re chatting with Anne Moss Rogers, who is TEDx storyteller, the 2019 YWCA Pat Asch Fellow for social justice, author of the award-winning book, Diary of a Broken Mind, and an Emotionally Naked® motivational speaker who helps people foster a culture of connection to prevent suicide, reduce substance misuse, and find life after loss. Despite her family’s best efforts, Anne Moss’s 20-year-old son Charles died by suicide on June 5, 2015, after many years of struggle with anxiety, depression, and ultimately addiction. Anne Moss started a blog, EmotionallyNaked.com, and chronicled her family’s tragedy in a newspaper article that went viral. After receiving a message from a young lady who wrote that one of her blog posts saved her life, Anne Moss sold her digital marketing business and followed her purpose of preventing suicide and reducing the stigma of addiction and mental illness. She has been featured in the New York Times and was the first suicide loss survivor ever invited to speak at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Anne Moss is also a trainer for the 4-hour evidence-based training called safeTALK. Anne Moss and I recorded this conversation before COVID changed all of our lives, but it’s amazing how everything we talked about is not only still relevant, I think it’s even MORE relevant now. The rates of depression, anxiety, and risk of suicide are growing at alarming rates, and COVID has only intensified these issues for teens in particular. I invited Anne Moss to come back on the show recently so we could talk about how COVID is impacting teens now, and how people can best support their teens in this trying and unpredictable time. We share a lot of resources throughout our conversation, but I’ve included even more in today’s show notes in case you are worried about your teen and need some extra support. Today we’re chatting with Rachel Bailey, a Parenting Specialist who has been serving families for over a decade. Besides being a mother of two, she also has master's degree in Clinical Psychology, a certification in Positive Discipline, and has provided services as an ADHD Coach, in-home mentor, and psychotherapist. Currently Rachel teaches parents hands-on tools for raising responsible, resilient, confident children while reducing the stress and guilt in parents' lives. Rachel’s approach to parenting is one I really think has gotten lost in our society in recent years, but I also think so many busy working parents are really craving this approach. Her focus on “long-game parenting” is something that I think would be so helpful for working parents to integrate into their parenting style. Being a working parent can be so much fun, it really doesn’t have to be a stressful, awful grind. And the tips Rachel shares in today’s episode I think can really help us get re-aligned with what’s important as parents. Today we’re chatting with Halelly Azulay, who is a consultant, facilitator, leadership development strategist, author, and speaker at international conferences and corporate meetings. In 2006, Halelly founded TalentGrow LLC, a consulting company focused on developing leaders and teams, especially for enterprises experiencing explosive growth or expansion that want a more proactive, strategic approach to leadership development. An expert in leadership, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and authentic networking with more than 20 years of experience, Halelly develops leaders that people *want* to follow. She is the author of two books, Employee Development on a Shoestring and Strength to Strength: How Working from Your Strengths Can Help You Lead a More Fulfilling Life. She offers actionable leadership insights and advice on her blog and her leadership podcast, the TalentGrow Show. Halelly and I connected through one of our past podcast guests, Kate Swoboda. I was excited to hear Halelly’s perspective on how we can start to integrate some of these skills we’re working on at home, like personal development and emotional intelligence, in the workplace. I’ve mentioned this on a few different episodes at this point, but I really think overcoming burnout and starting to enjoy our lives as working parents is something we need to attack from two different angles: first, within ourselves as individuals. But I also think we really need to start making big changes in companies also, in order to see any sort of widespread shift in our society. That’s the sort of work Halelly is doing, so I wanted to dive deeper with her here to learn more about how we can integrate more emotional intelligence not only at home, but at work too. She helps high-achievers all over the world to replace their incomes, so they can quit and stay out of their 9-5 jobs, by building businesses out of their passions. I’ve mentioned in the past my experience both in the corporate sector as well as my transition into entrepreneurship. I try to stay away from talking much about business-building tactics and strategies. That’s just not the focus of our show, and there are a lot of people out there who are much more knowledgeable about that stuff. So, while Christine does focus on helping women build successful businesses, that’s not what we’re talking about today. Instead, we’re going to focus on how a working parent knows whether they should build a business of their own, or whether they would be happier in a corporate setting. Building your own business might create more flexibility in your schedule, but it can also add additional stress, both financially and in terms of your time commitment. Over the last five years, I’ve come to believe that different people can be happy in either arena. It’s really more about the choices we each make in our own lives. But the question is, how do you know whether building your own business will lead you to happiness, or if you should try to make things work in the corporate world? Today we’re welcoming Katie Rossler to the show. Katie is a licensed professional counselor from the United States living in Munich, Germany. She has over 10 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families on improving their relationships and enjoyment of life. After four years of being a stay at home mom, she created the program, From Stay at Home Mom to Chief Household Officer®, which teaches and empowers moms to run their households like entrepreneurs do a business. Katie has two girls, 4 and 2, and loves to be outside with her family. She is a lover of sushi, yoga, the beach, and laughing. Today we’re going to talk about a few different aspects of adjusting to a big life change, such as a cross-country or even an international move. What we talk about here would apply to any big life transition though, whether it’s moving or having a new baby or starting a new job or dealing with a family illness. Big life transitions really do have a way of making us feel disoriented and uncertain, like the world is shifting beneath our feet. We usually have a whole new list of logistics to handle. But in times of change, we also have to re-negotiate roles with our partner, help our kids manage their big emotions, and figure out how to take care of ourselves while we’re dealing with all kinds of unpredictability. I’m really excited to chat with Katie to hear more about her experience, and to get her professional advice to help us manage these types of big changes in our lives as successfully as possible. Last week my husband, Joey, and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. So, in honor of our anniversary, I wanted to reflect on the vows I made to Joey on our wedding day, and how those vows look in the daily reality of our life, 7 years and two kids later. My Marriage Vows: Joey, words cannot express how happy and grateful I am to be standing with you today. You have the most beautiful heart of anyone I know. You have fulfilled my life in ways I never imagined possible, and I couldn’t be happier to become your wife today. I consider it a privilege to be able to share the rest of my life with you. First and foremost, I promise to be authentic with you, to let you see me exactly as I am without fear or reservation. And in turn, I will encourage you to be yourself, to appreciate your individuality as it changes and grows over time. I will always remind you to be true to yourself, setting aside my own expectations for who I want you to be. I promise to be trustworthy and loyal to you. I will protect your secrets, empower you to overcome your fears, and encourage your most ambitious dreams without passing judgment. I promise to listen carefully when you want to talk, and I will sit with you in silence when there are no words. I promise to do my part to make our life together fun. I promise to contribute joy, adventure, creativity, and a strong sense of character into the family that we are beginning here today. I will be your companion in parenthood, to make our family’s love and happiness a priority. Finally, I promise to be your best friend and partner in every way I possibly can. I vow to share in all of your joys, big and small, and to stand by your side even in the worst of times. I will respect and honor our marriage for the rest of our lives. I love you so much, Joey. Thank you for being my husband. Today we’re chatting with Amanda Walker, who is a Healthstyle Coach who empowers women to feel amazing naked. She is the creator of the Feel Amazing Naked Program and the Feel Amazing Naked Podcast and the blogger and mastermind behind awalkmyway.com. She has guided thousands of women to conquer the fear and confusion that was once keeping them stuck. Amanda uses a “WHOLE”istic, no B.S., approach to coaching and blends strategy, skill and mindset to help clients unearth the root causes of their struggles with food, body and mind to help them create the life they crave. Amanda and I were connected by a past podcast guest, Heather Chauvin from episode 74. Amanda and I have gotten to know each other pretty well over the last several months. Sarah Santacroce is an internationally recognized LinkedIn Specialist & Online Presence Mentor who has personally coached over 1,900 entrepreneurs. She helps them position themselves as experts on LinkedIn so they get clients with ease. In addition, Sarah is known for helping fellow introverts market their business authentically & anxiety-free, sell their services & make a difference. She’s also the founder of The Gentle Business Revolution movement and host of the podcast with the same name. When she’s not working, she loves adventure & traveling, yoga & nature walks or hanging out with her family. When I heard Sarah Santacroce talking about her Gentle Business Revolution on another podcast, I was really intrigued. Not only because I do see companies becoming more intentional about the way they do business, but I also think as consumers we’re just ready to stop being taken advantage of too. Sarah’s model really is rooted in seeing people as human beings, which as you know is a big message we promote here on this show. I think The Gentle Business Revolution is important and should be adopted in a lot of different ways. I’m really excited to learn more about how Sarah is integrating this model in the work she does, and to share that with you as well, whether you’re a corporate professional, an entrepreneur, or even just a consumer who’s ready to work with more human-oriented businesses. Today we’re chatting with Ayelet Marinovich, who helps families feel confident they can raise great humans from day one - without having to buy a single toy. She is a mother of two young boys, a parent educator, singer, author, and pediatric speech-language pathologist gone rogue. She is the host of the Learn With Less Podcast, and creator of the Learn With Less™ Curriculum, supporting parents and caregivers along their journey through early parenthood. Parenting in modern society can feel impossible at times. We’re constantly bombarded with advice and research and studies and opinions about the “right way” to raise our kids in the modern age. The information is often conflicting or outdated or sets us up for trying to meet impossible standards. I’ve also personally found that most of the advice doesn’t apply to my child or isn’t in alignment with our family’s core values. That’s why I wanted to bring Ayelet onto the show. Her approach really helps parents re-focus on what’s really important in parenting: connecting with our children in simple and natural ways. We don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on toys or contraptions. We don’t have to sign them up for every extra-curricular activity. We don’t have to do academic drills with them. All they need is our love and acceptance. Ayelet shares with us how we can integrate that love and connection into our daily life in practical and simple ways. Today we’re chatting with Marisa Lonic, who is the founder of Mama Work It. Marisa is a married, working mom of four kids, a native New Yorker, and now lives in northern California. She helps moms find the time they need to do the things they want via a time management course she facilitates called “The Get More Time Project,” and a blog she writes on the regular. She recently published her first book, Time Momagement, which covers gems like goal setting, prioritizing, and managing your time during the challenging years of raising young kids. Marisa also does speaking engagements and live events for moms in the San Francisco Bay Area. This was such a fun conversation. Marisa is one of the most straightforward and proactive moms I’ve ever met. I just love her outlook on how to juggle a thriving career and kids and marriage and friendships and taking care of yourself. Her book is so practical and includes some of the most critical things a working parent can do to create a life they actually enjoy. And also an exciting note to share with you all. When we recorded this episode, Marisa was pregnant with her fourth baby, and since then she’s given birth to their newest little addition. So, congratulations to you and your family, Marisa! Back on episode 71 of the show, Rebecca Ching and I talked about a therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems, and how it can help us re-frame the way we deal with big emotional challenges. One of the things she mentioned in our conversation really resonated with me, and I wanted to dig a little deeper into it a little more today. Rebecca talked about how many people these days are stuck living only in their head, totally cut off from their emotions. We talked more in that episode about the research and the reasons behind WHY that’s happening, which I think is fascinating. If you didn’t listen that to that conversation yet, definitely check that out too. I’ll link our conversation up in the show notes. But this experience of detaching from FEELING our emotions and relying on our heads alone to process what’s going on for us emotionally was something I could really relate to. I’ve spent most of my life INTELLECTUALIZING my emotions. Up until ten years ago or so, I didn’t really FEEL them in my body or in my soul at all. I mostly saw my emotions as some puzzle that needed to be figured out or solved. And in order to do that, I needed to keep some distance from them. I needed to bury them a little before I could look at them objectively. I relied heavily on trying to put a positive spin on things, on “letting things go”, and analyzing what was happening, rather than actually FEELING the emotions that were coming up for me. But in doing that, I really was just suppressing, and often completely invalidating, what was really happening inside of me. At the time, I truly didn’t realize I wasn’t feeling those emotions. I just thought I was “being mature” or “staying in control” or “expressing myself in a healthy way.” Those were all fancy ways of saying that I was avoiding the real pain of experiencing my own feelings. Today we’re chatting with Heather Chauvin, who is the creator of the Mom Is In Control Podcast, a mostly solo show where she tells it like it is. She reveals her most vulnerable truths about womanhood, parenting her 3 boys, living through stage 4 cancer, navigating marriage and creating business success without burning out. With new podcast episodes coming out every day, Heather draws on her experience as a social worker, mental health advocate and inspirational speaker to revolutionize how women define themselves. She challenges them to give themselves permission to live more, drop the guilt and ask for what they need. Heather has been featured on The Huffington Post, The OWN Network, CTV, and interviewed by many notable podcasters and radio shows. Her motto is in order to raise happy, calm and confident children, we must become to person we most desire them to be. This was such a fun and inspiring conversation. Heather is so warm and candid about what it really takes to create a life that fills you up, rather than depletes you. There are a lot of people out there selling a silver bullet promise that will fix all of your problems. In this conversation, we really dive into the reality of what it takes to create a life you ENJOY as a busy working parent. You don’t have to give up the things that are most important to you to have a rich and full life. Instead, it’s about making strategic and deliberate choices about how you live your life as a whole. Today we’re chatting with Errin Weisman, who is a physician trained in family medicine, life coach, podcaster and fierce advocate for wellness in medicine. She faced professional burnout early in her career and speaks openly about her story in order to help others know they are not alone, particularly female physicians and working moms. Dr. Weisman wholeheartedly believes to be a healer, you must first fill your own cup. She lives and practices life coaching and medicine in rural Southwestern Indiana, loves her roles as a farmer's wife, athlete, and mother of three. She also hosts the Doctor Me First podcast. I wanted to bring Errin on the show because my experience really is with professionals who tend to work in more corporate working environments, or who are entrepreneurs who work from home. A lot of the strategies that work for people in corporate or who own their own business aren’t always going to work for people like doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers, construction workers, and other people whose jobs are inherently stressful, and who might even deal with life and death on a daily basis. Christine is your classic high school nerd turned physician, after taking a detour exploring the world of education, teaching math in the New York City public school system. After having her idealism (but not soul) crushed by young mischievous teenagers, she turned to the world of medicine to indulge her thirst for learning. She holds a BS from Cornell University in Human Biology, and a joint MD/MBA from Tufts University. She is a co-host of the newly released DearDoc podcast, where she and her co-host Gregory Conor speak honestly and dig deep into the issues we all face as working parents. She’s a native from the east coast, but she has quickly assimilated to the sun and sand of the Greater Los Angeles area, enjoying the food, outdoors and outlets to all things international that the west has to offer. She lives in San Diego, CA with her husband and their two children where they enjoy cooking, going to farmers markets, all things water and outdoors. This is one of my favorite interviews I’ve ever done on this podcast. As you’ll hear in our conversation, I’ve been studying Internal Family Systems for a while, and I’ve really adopted it as a cornerstone of the work I do. It’s become fundamental to my understanding of just about every issue working parents face, and it has changed so much in my own life as well. Rebecca really helps offer a practical guide to using IFS to improve our work, our relationships, and our lives in general. We’ve all heard the common air travel safety phrase: you need to put the oxygen mask on yourself before focusing on anyone else around you. In other words, you can’t help anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself first. So why can’t we do this in our everyday lives? Why are we all struggling so much with too many responsibilities and expectations? Why are we over-burdening ourselves without feeling like we can take even a few minutes to replenish and focus on our own well-being? What’s going on? I truly don’t think there’s one explanation for us all. We’re all different people. We’re all motivated by different things. We’re all afraid of different things. But I’ve done a lot of personal development work over the years, and I’ve discovered a few reasons why I personally have a hard time putting myself first. I don’t see a lot of these reasons highlighted out there in the larger conversations around self-care and burnout and living a healthy life. So today I wanted to share some of what holds ME back from putting myself first, in case one or two of these reasons resonate with you. These aren’t your typical “I don’t have enough time” explanations. We’re going to dig a little deeper today.
Today we’re chatting with Kathryn Sollmann, who is a career coach, author and speaker on a mission to help current and returning professional women always stay in the workforce and find the work that fits their lives. Kathryn has created and led hundreds of conferences and workshops to help women sustain and advance careers through every age and life stage. Kathryn is recognized as a thought leader in the women and work space. Her book—Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn’t Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead—is the everyday woman’s guide to developing her own brand of ambition and success and finding many lucrative ways to lean “in-between” alongside caregiving for children and aging parents. A mother of two adult daughters, Kathryn has worked non-stop since the age of 16. She coaches women with insights from her own flexible work experience—as a full-time and part-time employee, a business owner, a marketing consultant, a telecommuter, a freelancer and a recruiter. A lot of what Kathryn talks about in her book on this show today relates to women and mothers, but so much of what we discussed applies equally to men. Statistically, there are more women struggling to get back into the workforce after a break, but as more men are staying home and downshifting in their careers, I think all of the insights and wisdom Kathryn shares in this episode will be an important reminder for you men out there as well. Today we’re welcoming back Lisa Zawrotny to the show. Lisa was here with us on episode 46, which is a great foundation for the conversation we’re going to have today. In that episode, we talked all about the higher purpose of productivity. As we all know, it’s not all just about saving time, it’s about creating lives we TRULY love. I’ll link that episode up in the show notes, so push pause here and go check that out first if you haven’t already listened. Lisa created Positively Productive Systems to help her chronically overwhelmed clients find success through simplicity and self-care. As a holistic productivity coach certified in time management and life coaching, she guides others to declutter their lives and to design customized systems and habits meant for their own unique personality and values. Episode Summary: Today we’re chatting with Tara McMullin, who is a podcaster, writer, and small business community leader. With over a decade of experience helping thousands of small business owners grow their businesses, she’s on a mission to change the dialogue about what’s really working from hype to candid conversation. She’s the host of the What Works podcast, a top small business podcast that’s been recommended by Forbes and Entrepreneur, as well as the founder of The What Works Network, a community hub for small business owners. Her work has been featured on Fast Company, Inc, Daily Worth, and The Huffington Post. What I love most about Tara’s approach is that she’s not peddling the same old advice for every business owner out there. She really honors the unique nature of what everyone is trying to build, and sees herself as a facilitator in helping people uncover what’s unique about themselves, rather than trying to teach how to be just like everyone else. She really inspired me early on in my business experience, and for that I’m so grateful. I wanted to bring Tara on the show to highlight the shift she made from being a “guru” in business, to being someone who really empowered others to look within themselves for answers as they build a business and a life that really works for them. The lessons Tara shares in the episode are geared toward entrepreneurs since that’s the group she focuses on helping most, but as our global economy shifts, I really think all companies can learn from the environment she’s cultivating not only in her business, but in her family, and in her life as well. I just really like the culture she’s building in everything she does, and I’m excited to share that with you all. Episode Summary: Today’s episode is a continuation of what we talked about last week. Over the last 6 years, I’ve focused all of my energy and attention on the issues and struggles working parents face in modern society, especially ambitious professionals who are in those early stages of parenthood. I’ve discovered a lot of unique stressors for this group of people, and our culture is just making things harder for these parents who are drowning and losing out on the most important years of their kids’ lives. This is a devastating situation. I am tired of seeing good people struggle through these important years of their lives. I’m tired of a whole generation of kids growing up thinking this is what life just is. It’s not right, and I believe there’s a way to avoid it. So last week I announced our new approach to working parenthood, which I call the Whole SELF Lifestyle™. If you haven’t heard episode 65, go back and listen, because I talked all about what the philosophy is all about and it’ll be helpful if you have that background. We’re going to build on that conversation today. Episode Summary: Hey y’all! We’re back! And this time, I’m talking with you from our new home in Austin, TX! It’s been about 8 months since I’ve chatted with you here on the podcast, and I have a few different things to share with you today to get you up to speed. A lot has happened, and all of it is pretty exciting! Our move conveniently coincided with this feeling I had been having that it was time to do an overall audit on the Working Parent Resource in general. So much has changed since I launched the Working Parent Resource brand back in 2015, and things felt a bit outdated to me. I wanted to check in to make sure the direction we were headed still felt good, and right, and most of all, as impactful as possible for you. I’ve learned a lot over the years, and I’ve done these types of audits at various points along the way. But things really have shifted a lot, and I knew it was time to do some deep reflection about the future of the Working Parent Resource. So after taking a little time off to move and to really evaluate all things related to the Working Parent Resource, I have three big announcements to share with you. Episode Summary: The topic we’re covering today is one that is really close to my heart. I first got to know Parijat Deshpande when I appeared on her podcast, Delivering Miracles®, to discuss my own experience with secondary infertility. Infertility and pregnancy loss are both topics that affect so many parents out there, and it’s just not talked about a lot. When I went through it myself, all I wanted was information and support about what I was going through, and I found both very difficult to find. But Parijat is on a mission to open up the conversation. She’s allowing us to shine a light on a very sensitive and difficult topic, and I’m so happy she was able to join us here to share her experience and her expertise. Parijat Deshpande is the leading high-risk pregnancy expert who guides women to have a healthy pregnancy, even if they have complications, so they can give their baby a strong start to life. She is the host of Delivering Miracles®, a podcast about infertility, loss, high-risk pregnancy, prematurity and healing after baby comes home. She is also the author of Pregnancy Brain: A Mind-Body Approach to Stress Management During a High-Risk Pregnancy due out in 2018. Episode Summary: This is part two of our two-part series about child development. As I mentioned in the last episode, there are a lot of times when I’m struggling with a certain type of behavior with my kids, and understanding what’s really going on with them developmentally has been SO helpful, so I wanted to pass that information along to you guys as well. If you haven’t already heard part 1 of this series, push pause and go back to listen to that part first. This part will make a lot more sense if you hear that first. So with that, let’s continue our conversation with Julia Pappas. Julia Pappas is a Cognitive Psychologist, Parent Coach, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. She has over 15 years of experience working with parents and their children, and has particular expertise in child development, behavioral regulation, and learning needs. Julia believes in the power of parents to change the world by being the best resource, inspiration, and support they can be to their children. She empowers parents to own their mission, discover limiting beliefs and parenting blocks, and helps develop essential skills so that parents can have the most fulfilling years of their life while raising children. (Editor's Note: I inaccurately refer to Julia Pappas as a doctor in this episode. To clarify, Julia Pappas has her Advanced Graduate Studies degree, but has not earned a doctorate). Episode Summary: Today’s episode is the first in a two-part series, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to cover since before I started this podcast nearly two years ago. I’ve learned a lot over the last 20 years about childhood development, and now that I’m a mom I’ve noticed that a LOT of that information is incredibly helpful to know. There are so many situations where I would normally lose my cool with my kids, but since I have certain information about what’s REALLY going on with them, I’m able to address their behavior in a healthier and more effective way. I wanted to share some of these key pieces of information with you too. Hopefully knowing some of this will give you some insights that will help you know how to navigate those difficult moments with your kids. To help me dive even more into this topic, I’m excited to welcome Julia Pappas, an expert in child psychology and parent coaching. Julia Pappas is a Cognitive Psychologist, Parent Coach, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Episode Summary: I’ve known Pat Flynn for a couple of years now, and even before I met him one thing has always stood out to me about him: he juggles several very successful businesses, a popular podcast and YouTube channel, a community with tens of thousands of members, and still his most important priority is being an involved husband and father. We ask ambitious moms all the time “how do you do it?” but we never ask dads the same question. Well, today we’re asking Pat Flynn how he does it all. Pat Flynn is a father, husband, and entrepreneur who lives and works in San Diego, CA. He owns several successful online businesses and is a professional blogger, keynote speaker, Wall Street Journal bestselling author, and host of the top-rated business podcast, The Smart Passive Income Podcast, which has earned over 30 million downloads, multiple awards and features in publications such as The New York Times and Forbes. He is also an advisor for LeadPages and other companies in the digital marketing arena. The post “WPR058: Pat Flynn Shares How He 'Does It All' as a Busy Working Dad” appeared first on WorkingParentResource.com.
Episode Summary: I don't really know a parent out there these days whose life ISN'T filled to the brim with things to do. Everyone I talk to is "Crazy-Busy." I think just about everyone who listens to this show is juggling some combination of work, building a business, usually a marriage or some other kind of serious romantic relationship, parenting your kids, friendships, hobbies, a lot of your kids have after-school activities, most of you are awesome and get in some type of exercise every week and you have to manage your household... there's just a lot going on for the average working parent. And the pace of our society in general is so "go-go-go" that even if you haven't filled your schedule with things to do, it can still feel like you're living your life in hyper-speed. I've noticed that as all of these things pile up though, we really start to feel like we're living a BUSY life that's not all that meaningful or enriching. So many working parents I talk to feel like they're just going through the motions in their lives. They're struggling to keep up with everything they HAVE to do, which leaves NO time for the things they WANT to do. Their health is failing. They frequently feel exhausted and resentful. They don't feel all that connected to their spouse, and they feel like the time they spend with their kids is filled with distractions and chores and other meaningless activities. Most working parents I know these days feel like their life is one big fire drill. If you've listened to any of the other episodes of this show, you've probably figured out by now that I don't really buy into this message that being a working parent HAS to be overwhelming or frustrating or exhausting. I know for a fact that being a working parent can be FUN. It can be an ADVENTURE. It can be fulfilling and rewarding and meaningful. It will definitely hand you challenges from time to time, but if you pay attention, those challenges can help you grow into an even better version of yourself. Life doesn't have to be awful as a working parent, and my main mission with the Working Parent Resource is to give you the tools you need to shift from that life of burnout to one where you feel really engaged and excited about what you're doing everyday. I've had a lot of great conversations here on this show about the small things you can do to get out of survival mode and create a more fulfilling life for yourself as a working parent. And I think those really practical, granular solutions are the key to making big shifts in our lives. That's important to cover. But today I wanted to take a step back and look at this big picture concept of living a FULL life as a working parent, rather than just enduring a BUSY one. So today I want to go through 11 things you should focus on to experience what I call "FULL PARENTHOOD" vs. BUSY PARENTHOOD. These are all things I've discovered to be really important parts of enjoying life as a working parent. So the more you can focus on doing these things, the more I think you'll really treasure this time in your life. And whenever you feel like you're struggling or you're just stretched thin, try to check back in to see if you're missing any of these things to get back on track. Episode Summary: I am so excited to have Dr. Yael Schonbrun back on the show with me today. I interviewed Yael back on episode WPR024 about Striking the Right Balance Between Career Ambition and an Engaged Family Life. Today, we are diving into the topic of communication in relationships. I’ve said this before on this show, and I’m sure I’ll say it a hundred more times: I believe the foundation of a family starts with the parents who are leading it. There’s so much to do as working parents, and I know from first-hand experience how easy it is to put your marriage on the back-burner as other demands take over. So I’m thrilled that Yael was able to return to the show and offer her advice and insights around how to really connect with your partner as you juggle your career and kids and running the household and everything else that you do on a daily basis. Yael is a clinical psychologist in private practice and an assistant professor at Brown University. In her spare time, she is a stay at home mother to her three boys. Her book exploring the psychology of straddling ambitious professional and engaged family life is coming out soon as well. Episode Summary: Courage isn’t a topic that I’ve talked about a lot on this show, but after learning a little more about the work that Kate Swoboda is doing, I was excited to invite her on the show. One of the things I really want to do on the Working Parent Resource Podcast is pull back the curtains on what’s REALLY motivating our behavior as working parents. I see a lot of solutions out there to help overwhelmed working parents, but a lot of them only address the surface level of the complex issues that parents are facing. Today Kate and I are diving much deeper into what really holds people back from pursuing a life that feels really GOOD for them. We talk about the reality of establishing new habits, and how our habits really are the foundation of the life we live. Kate not only offers some really interesting insights, but she also offers very practical action steps for you to take as you begin to implement these things into your own life. Kate Swoboda is the creator of YourCourageousLife.com, Director of the Courageous Living Coach Certification at TribeCLCC.com, and author of the book, The Courage Habit. Her work has appeared in USA Today, Forbes, Entrepreneur, MindBodyGreen, and more. The Courage Habit discusses the connection between the psychology of courage and the neuropsychology of habit-formation, and the tools can be used in leadership, parenting, with creativity, and more. Episode Summary: Today’s episode is all about getting your kid’s stuff organized! I don’t know about you, but one of the biggest challenges my husband and I have is keeping all of our kid’s stuff in order. As soon as my older son was born, we immediately started accumulating kid gear: strollers, toys, clothes, books… the list is endless. And now that there are two of them, it’s multiplying exponentially. The conversation I have with my guest today, Susie Salinas, was so helpful in creating some structure in our home when it comes to our kid’s stuff. Susie Salinas is a mom of 3, military spouse, and owner of “Systems by Susie,” a business that helps busy moms develop long-term, easy-to-maintain solutions to keep their homes, their lives, and their kids organized and stress-free. Episode Summary: The topic we’re discussing today is one that can be a huge issue for working parents. But it can be sensitive and personal and often brings up plenty of shame and judgment, so I don’t think a lot of people don’t talk openly about it. It’s also something that can easily derail a healthy relationship if you and your spouse are having trouble in this area. Today I’m joined by certified sex therapist Lisa Katona to answer all of your questions about sex and working parenthood. With over a decade of experience in community mental health and private practice, Lisa Katona is thrilled to bring more sex positivity to the world. Lisa completed her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan and is a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She is also a trained couples therapist, in both Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Gottman’s Couples Therapy. Lisa’s therapeutic focus is on sexual wellness with a sex-positive perspective. She has given numerous trainings on the topics of sexual health throughout the Midwest. When she’s not speaking to an audience, Lisa loves her work, providing individual and couples therapy to folks who want or need to talk about sex. Episode Summary: Fifty episodes! I can’t believe it! I started this podcast a little over a year ago, on my birthday in January of 2017, and it’s been such an amazing experience. I have had such a great time interviewing amazing guests, sharing some of my thoughts about being a working parent, and generally just opening up an important conversation with you all. It’s been a great year, and I’m just getting started! So to celebrate this milestone, I thought we’d do something a little different today. I know some of you have been listening since the beginning, but I thought I’d sort of re-introduce myself to those of you who are new listeners. But I also wanted to add a little twist. So today I’m going to share some personal facts about my life that I never really talk about. I usually try to keep whatever stories I share with you super related to whatever topic we’re talking about, because I sort of feel indulgent just talking about myself for no reason. Episode Summary: I’m so excited to welcome our guest today, Chris Ducker. Chris has been a business mentor for me for a couple of years now, and one of the biggest things that drew me to him was his candor about his experience with burnout many years ago. Obviously as a working mom I can relate to that situation well. But what really impressed me about Chris was his dedication to transform his life to be more healthy and congruent with this values. I love how he used this experience of complete burnout as a catalyst for change. I can relate to that experience as well, and at the core, that’s what the Working Parent Resource is all about. Chris Ducker is a serial entrepreneur, keynote speaker and author of the bestseller, Virtual Freedom as well as his new book that’s just been released, The Rise of the Youpreneur. Originally from the UK, Chris has lived in the Philippines for 15 years, where he hosts the annual Tropical Think Tank mastermind event and has founded several businesses, which combined house over 450 full-time employees. He is also a popular business blogger and podcaster at ChrisDucker.com and the founder of the personal branding business community, Youpreneur.com. Episode Summary: We all know that time management is one of the most challenging aspects of being a working parent. Our guest today, Tonya Dalton of InkWELL Press, is a productivity expert, and she’s going to share with us a few gems about what REALLY works to save time as a busy parent. We can all get sidetracked so easily with the latest productivity app or time saving hack or even the coolest paper planner, and she cuts through the nonsense to give you exactly what you need to maximize your efficiency. Tonya Dalton is a productivity expert who started her first business in 2009 working out of her dining room juggling two small kids. By 2011, she had grown the business to the point where her husband could leave corporate America and come work with her. By combining her entrepreneurial spirit with his MBA and marketing experience, they were able to grow a small niche business quickly into something that could support their family. inkWELL Press launched in November of 2014 and has been able to rapidly grow its online presence and expand into a national retail partnership thanks to a commitment to quality, focused marketing efforts and fiercely loyal fans. Recently Tonya launched her podcast, Productivity Paradox, which debuted at #12 in iTunes in the Business category and surpassed 100,000 downloads in the first few months. Episode Summary: If you’ve been listening to this show for a while, you know I’m not a huge fan of productivity hacks and time saving tips. I think they can definitely serve a purpose in helping us streamline our lives, but I also think often those kinds of things lead to a more frantic lifestyle and can be a distraction from determining what we’re really trying to accomplish. In this episode I chat with Lisa Zarwtony about the underlying purpose of productivity, and I just love her inspiring take on a very common topic. Episode Summary: Our world is so fast-paced and noisy these days, it seems almost impossible to be in control of our lives as working parents. Many people just believe BALANCE is an impossible ideal, so they don't even try to work toward it anymore. They just put their head down and work harder and faster to get through the day. And a record number of people are suffering from burnout, anxiety and depression as a result. Just about everyone I talk to has a different combination of struggles as working parents, but here are some of the most common ones: Stress Burnout Overwhelm Frustration Resentment... these are all pretty much par for the course. Feeling like a failure because you aren't meeting all of your own or other people's expectations (which are totally unachievable, but you still hold yourself to these impossible standards). A marriage that feels distant or is even falling apart Feeling like a terrible parent because you don't spend much time with your kids, and when you do you're distracted and impatient and just want to rush through it so you can either take care of household responsibilities or just get a MINUTE to yourself. Your self-care is lacking and it's taking a toll on your health and relationships and your overall levels of happiness. You might be experiencing behavior problems with your kids Your house is disorganized and overwhelming You're just going through the motions. The things you really care about are pushed back to take care of things you feel like you really NEED to be doing. Your identity is shifting now that you're a working parent. If you listened to my episode a couple of weeks ago about what's changing in 2018 (WPR043), you know I'm focusing even more this year on helping parents become more deliberate in all areas of their lives. I truly believe that until we learn how to reclaim control of our lives, to tune out all of the distractions, to reframe our expectations of ourselves, and focus on what's actually most important to us, we're going to continue to struggle with all of the issues I just listed, no matter how many time management books come out or videos you watch about marriage tips or articles you read about disciplining your child. All of those issues can be improved, if not resolved, by becoming more intentional and selective about what gets your attention in your everyday life. And there are some specific things that will make that possible for all of us. I also mentioned in WPR043 that I'll be doing a challenge this year to help people finally become more deliberate in 12 different areas of their lives. And that's what I wanted to talk about a little bit today. The Deliberate Life Challenge, is my way of helping working parents simplify their lives and become more intentional so they can finally overcome the overwhelm and struggle. If you haven't already signed up, you can go to DeliberateLifeChallenge.com to make sure you're notified about everything that's happening. Episode Summary: We talk a lot about being good parents on this show, and today our guest Sam Munoz is sharing with us a really fun and different way to do that. She’s passionate about using literature as a tool to enhance your connection with your kids and integrate your core family values into their upbringing. We also dive into her own experience as a new mom and how she found security in using the lessons in the books she shares with her daughter. She has a lot of practice tips for working parents in particular to make the most of our limited time with our kids using the books they read throughout their childhood. Samantha is a mother, engineer, wife, bibliophile and life lover. Her multi-passionate personality has led her to a successful and fulfilling side hustle as a children's book blogger. Sam, who spends most days engaged in tickle fights, jumping on the bed and reading under a blanket fort with her daughter, has a passion for teaching parents how to create lasting and invaluable book collections for their children. Parenting can be fun, and you can still teach your children all the things you ever wanted to teach them along the way!
