Larissa Mills' personal style is some of my favorite in the game. I distinctly remember when I first saw her - her daughter Ella posted a getting ready video to TikTok when she decided to flip the camera around to her mom and show off her outfit. I remember gasping at how stylish, effortless, and incredibly cool she was and being like "WHO IS THAT???!!!?" Fast forward two years and a happy accident later, Larissa is a bonafide style star who's OOTD videos have gone viral and garnered her a community of fashion-lovers alike. In today's episode, I chat with Larissa about fashion at every age, demystifying the idea of "that's too young for you," and her favorite staples in her closet for effortless dressing. Love the show? In this episode, we're shaking things up. Our Manager of Operations and PR, Miranda Dorta, interviews our host, Tracy Cherpeski. We dive into the essential conversation around work-life balance, particularly in the demanding lives of medical professionals. Our main theme revolves around the urgent need to shift from the relentless ‘hustle culture' to a more sustainable approach that values self-care, reflection, and personal growth. Here's what we discuss: The Quest for Balance: We discuss the importance of not just spending time, but to invest it wisely in yourself, highlighting the significance of nurturing both the personal and professional aspects of life. The Slow Movement: We explore the idea of slowing down and how it allows for relaxation and structured reflection, contrary to the fast-paced environment that many medical practitioners are accustomed to. Daily Rituals and Incremental Progress: The conversation touches on the benefits of establishing daily routines that foster gradual improvements and the importance of acknowledging personal milestones along the path to achieving one's ideal life and career. Thriving Practice Community: A focal point of our discussion is the introduction of a supportive community designed for medical professionals. This community serves as a platform for sharing insights, experiences, and offering encouragement amongst an international community of peers. Key Themes for Medical Entrepreneurs: We highlight the specific themes that resonate with the community, including entrepreneurship, learning from setbacks, and supporting fellow medical business owners in their journeys. Invitation to Engage: Medical professionals are encouraged to join the Thriving Practice Community to dive deeper into these topics, benefit from mutual support, and connect with individuals who share similar challenges and aspirations. Stay tuned for an enlightening conversation on finding harmony in the hustle and how taking a step back can actually propel you forward in both your personal life and medical career. Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic is a collection of non-fiction short stories that feature unfiltered first-person accounts of the incredible, heartbreaking, and, more often than not, catastrophic effects 2020 had on people's lives. Hindsight 2020 offers an overview of the big events of 2020 through the moving personal stories of 10 people from around the globe.2020 was a life-changing, historic year, largely because of the pandemic, but coronavirus is not the main focus of the book. More on Fani: I live and breathe beauty, value personal connections, and above all - authenticity is at the core of my brand. Growing up, I had acne (I've had it for over a decade) and remembered seeing all the perfectly polished images on Instagram and in magazines. It was devastating and made me hate myself and my skin. In the last few years, I vowed to be as honest as possible, showing my skin with all its so-called "imperfections," and if I manage to help even one person, that will be enough! In my writing, it's essential to provide value to the reader, so all my pieces are always well-research and include expert opinions. I love reading scientific journals and learning about new ingredients, beauty treatments, and more. I'm very creative, organized, and a bit chaotic! BREAKEVEN is a London-based blog written and edited by Fani Mari, a beauty, lifestyle, and fashion journalist. With a master's degree in Fashion Journalism from Central Saint Martins and various contributions to publications such as Coveteur, HuffPost US, Cosmopolitan UK + US, The Independent, Glamour UK, Byrdie, MINE Magazine, Citizen Femme, Global Blue, 1Granary, Design Scene, D'Scene Magazine, Drapers and others. This blog is a personal diary, a compilation of product reviews, traveling, outfit shots, inspiration, general thoughts, and everything in between. This blog is mainly about beauty and skincare as well as fashion. Fani has seen the catastrophic effects of fast fashion over the years of working in the industry and has always favored up-and-coming designers and high-quality materials that last the test of time; hence she's involved in a peer-to-peer rental platform By Rotation, to add to the circular economy movement and focusing on sharing rather than owning. Before Jedidiah paused the internet with Kylie Jenner wearing her Vashtie dress in 2020, she was made redundant from her full-time job just a month before. What seemed like an overnight success was actually, at the time, 4 years in the making - and what comes with overnight growth isn't always glamorous. Born into a Nigerian and Ghanian lineage, influenced by her hometown of Hackney East London, Jedidiah always had a flair for fashion, and creativity was encouraged in her home. So it was no surprise that whilst studying Fashion Journalism at London College of Fashion, she knew very quickly that if she were to pursue fashion, it was going to be something within design. Upon graduation, she began working as an events coordinator and invested in courses to learn how to construct garments, sewing pieces for clients in the evenings and weekends. Fast forward to 2021 and Loud Brand Studio's is a force to be reckoned with, as well as Jedidiah being listed as a Forbes 30 under 30 this year. Having just recently launched her new collection, Iru, inspired by Nigerian food, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jedidiah to bring things back to the beginning and take you behind the scenes of what comes with fast growth. With her beautiful woven baskets, colourful chairs and benches or exclusive printed clothing, the Swiss designer Kathrin Eckhardt mixes the craftsmanship of her adopted country, Ghana, with European tastes and standards. In this interview, Kathrin tells me what inspired her, one day in 2015, to give up her career as a journalist and fashion stylist to settle in Ghana out of love. The Swiss woman looks back on her difficult beginnings in this faraway country and explains how she managed, over time, to integrate and understand the local rules and customs, to finally become the entrepreneur she is today. Ghana has now become her second home. Here, Kathrin founded her design label, a studio and her network of artisans. I ask Kathrin about her lifelong interest in fashion, but also about her career in the media industry, especially at the famous NZZ am Sonntag. We discuss the evolution of these two industries and Kathrin tells how the economic difficulties and her thirst for freedom and creativity pushed her on the path of entrepreneurship. The designer recounts her learnings, but also her fears and difficulties. We talk about money and negotiation of course, as well as creativity, inspiration and freedom. In this discussion, Kathrin opens her heart and allows us all to be inspired by her sincerity, independence and strength. So don't miss a minute and enjoy this new episode of Brillantes! Today I have the joy of chatting with fashion journalist Ayo Ojo about how fashion journalism can be relevant in 2020. He’s a CSM student, YouTuber behind The Fashion Archive, podcaster behind The Anti Fashion Show, and sharp fashion critic on social media as @fashionroadman. Through his content, Ayo shares an accessible yet academic take on the fashion system - and is one of the few people who reignites my interest in fashion history and design through his work. On the podcast today, we’re not only going to be discussing Ayo’s content, but we’ll also be discussing the place of fashion journalists / critics in the digital age - and how they can stay relevant as the world changes. Caryn Franklin, 61, is a brilliant woman. One of fashion's tribal elders, the professor, journalist, stylist, producer, author, campaigner and activist has worked in the industry for nearly 35 years. Starting her career as fashion editor on i-D magazine in the 1980s, Franklin went on to spend 15 years presenting and directing The Clothes Show for the BBC, working in education and as a business ambassador before co-founding All Walks Beyond the Catwalk with Debra Bourne and Erin O'Connor. She has travelled all over the world, from war zones to workshops, and remains a pioneering voice for diversity, equality, inclusion and sustainable practices. We met briefly when I was a fashion editor and then got to know each other properly when collaborating on a number of research projects through the Diversity Network (I was lecturing part-time in Fashion Journalism at the time).Believing that confidence and authenticity come with age, in this outstanding podcast episode Caryn Franklin talks about the power of grey, the representation of older models and the joy of ageing. We also discuss sustainability in the fashion industry, the power of social change and how we can made more considered choices about the clothes we wear. This Episode was recorded during London fashion week. Extinction Rebellion is a grass roots activism movement demanding radical action on the global climate crisis. The group formed in the UK in October 2018 on the premise that trying to be a bit more sustainable, tinkering around the edges of the system but essentially carrying on with business as usual, will not save us from climate breakdown. They are calling on governments to declare a climate and ecological emergency, and to act immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025. You will hear from some of the Extinction Rebellion protestors who staged a 'funeral' for London Fashion Week in September, then sit down with activists: Clare Farrell, Sara Arnold and Will Skeaping to find out why they think civil disobedience is the way to go, what to do about the scary science, and where fashion fits in with all of this. This interview was fascinating to me as someone who became intrigued with the scientific viability of astrology prior to diving deeply into other esoteric studies of consciousness. Personally I believe astrological natal charts can be more accurate than some of the most prevalent personality tests businesses use today like Meyers Briggs, Jungian personality tests, or DISC Profiles. I’ll spare you my thoughts on the scientific viability of a proper natal chart for now. This conversation is not about astrology.I think it’s important to share what people like Ruby Warrington are doing in the business world. Best known for her widely popular online magazine, The Numinous, Ruby also speaks openly about integrating mysticism into her life in the fashion industry in London in her previous book Material Girl Mystical World. But even more impressive to me, Ruby now works with big brands like Soho House, Unilever, Buick, Lululemon and TopShop who are looking to integrate what she calls “now age” mysticism into their brands. Mysticism, from a scientific and psychological prospective, which is how I tend to view things, is really just another form of introspection. So the work that Ruby does for brands, from a corporate standpoint, is indicative of a major shift in perception for corporations. In this conversation we discuss Ruby’s career, her relationship to alcohol and thoughts on plant medicines and psychedelics, and her latest initiative as the creator of the Sober Curious Movement. That’s really the deep part of this conversation – delving into the the ideas and social constructs we have built around alcohol. I recorded this interview a while ago with two amazing young women who run their own podcast called „the mind palace podcast“. Their show is dedicated to minimalism and the joy of less. The English-American team talked about podcasting, friendship, and shaping the future. JESSICA LYNN WILLIAMS is an artist and I am a lover of written word, both in reading and writing. She works as a freelance web designer and minimalist mentor in Maui, Hawaii where she spends her days going swimming in the ocean with her dog, Arrow and snorkeling with her husband. She is inspired by Colin Wright and The Minimalists. MELISSA CAIN has got a degree in English Literature and Fashion Journalism which is where she cultivated her interest in style, culture, and writing. She spends her days working with children, and in her spare time she loves hiking around the wild English countryside, travelling, watching documentaries and reading. Her journey into minimalism started four years ago when she came across The Minimalists website and it transformed her life. If you do take the time to listen to any of the mind palace podcast shows - don't be a stranger! Reach out and share your thoughts with me via social media.
