How does a record label, or distribution platform work these days, especially in such parts of the world where the technology opportunities are quite different than in the United States or Europe? Is there a demand in other continents deemed worthy of creating outlets for artists to provide music on? Diego Farias who is the CEO and co-founder of the record label and music distributor Amuse, explains how in this music climate they provide that platform, along with other features, affording almost every artist the opportunity to succeed in this ever-changing and challenging industry. Amuse has been named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies and one of Europe's hottest startups by WIRED UK. As its creator, Diego spends his days bringing new perspectives to the music industry. Prior to Amuse, Diego was a part of Warner Music Sweden, taking the company to fully embracing music streaming. In 2017 he co-founded Amuse to answer one question - what would a record label look like if it was started today? Diego has previously spoken at conferences including DLD, Midem, Winter Music Conference, the A3C Festival & Conference, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), and Bogotá Music Market (Bomm). He was named to Billboard's 2019 Indie Power Players List. Volumes vocalist Michael Barr is our guest this week. We talk about his journey from exiting Volumes to eventually returning to the band, and we get an update on the band's next album. Michaels tells us about their recently-released standalone single, "Pixelate," its message about the dangers of growing up staring at a computer screen, the digital imprint being more important to your legacy than human interaction, getting bullied for staying silent and refusing to add to the daily noise, if caring too much about your own brand can make you disconnected from other people, and the importance of being able to fuck up so you can grow as a person. Michael also shares a memory of Diego Farias, his former bandmate that tragically passed away earlier this year. Petar, Brandon, and Sylvia tackle the video footage of Doro's drive-in concert, our experience with visiting Las Vegas casinos during the pandemic, the power of regulating the media intake in your life, and Protest the Hero's statement about fans that have a different political agenda. Songs: Volumes - “Pixelate," Descend - “Lily”

My guest this week is Diego Farias, who's a digital music and tech expert with experience from some of the world’s most successful tech companies. He now serves as the CEO and co-founder of record label and music distributor Amuse. Amuse has a unique business model in that it provides free distribution to all the streaming services. The company then analyzes music consumption and listening habits in order to find promising songs and rising talent. It then signs the artists to licensing deals rather than traditional recording contracts. Amuse recently introduced a new product called Fast Forward that uses machine learning to predict and pay independent artists future royalties. With Fast Forward, independent artists can collect to up to six months of their future royalties while also retaining the rights to their music During the interview we spoke about what transformed the Swedish music scene to digital, the record label of the future, using machine learning to determine future royalty payouts, and much more. On the intro I’ll take a look at the RIAA claim that 25% of CDs bought on Amazon are counterfeit, and the phenomena of mixing with your eyes.
