Today's episode features my dear sweet friend, International Music Publisher & Songwriting Coach, Suzan Koç! In 1996, she moved to New York, where she was VP of Creative for Hit & Run Music (Phil Collins, Genesis) where she met songwriter Shelly Peiken (“What A Girl Wants” (#1), “Bitch (#2)) and landed cuts with Reba McEntire, Brandy, and *NSYNC. She then became the VP of Writer Development at BMG Publishing in 2001.   Since 2008 she has mentored songwriters through individual online workshops (see suzankoc.com).

His massive 20 year career spans DJing, producing, sound tracking, and numerous album releases. Taken together, he has become an ambassador for China's burgeoning electronic music scene. So where did he come from? Well, most people outside of China wouldn't know the inland Chinese province of Ningxia, but that's where young Mickey was grew up. His artistic family ( = classical music, opera, and dance) was the ideal launch pad into the Beijing Dance Academy at age 11. A dance background may not be the norm for electronic music producers, but if you think about it, it makes perfect sense for China's premier dance music DJ.As his career took off, Mickey went on to set many “firsts” in China's growing electronic music scene: the 1st Chinese artist to perform at Berlin's legendary Tresor club, the first to play at Sonar in Spain, MIDEM in Cannes, Wire in Japan; and the first to release an original electronic album in China itself. He also has a myriad of international collaborations under his belt – including Laurent Garnier, Ken Ishii, Ishino, and Technasia (to name but a few).Mickey has also played a key role in the wider electronic music industry in China. Back in 2004, he co-founded 02 Culture the company behind China's massive electronic party brand YEN. Mickey helped push YEN to support domestic music talent, rather than following others to slavishly chase after foreign DJs for the sake of a bit of ticket revenue. After just three years, it was clear that the strategy paid off – YEN was established as a leading player in the Asian electronic music scene and the hub for electronic music in China.

Welcome To The Music

Karim Kanji and Gregg Tilston welcome to the podcast, Bad Skin! 4 girls not afraid to kick ass and deliver a phenomenal performance each time they set foot on stage! They love to take every opportunity to show the world what they are capable of! They played a lot of shows and festivals in Quebec: Music 4 Cancer, Pop Montreal, Pouzza Fest, 77 Festival, Rockfest pour la santé mentale, Le Phoque Off and many more! Throughout the festivals they met and spend time with their main inspiration, the members of L7 and last summer they went on an adventure, the biggest convention in the world at Cannes for MIDEM. It all started with Dope, (signer/ rhythm guitarist) from Laval. Since birth she knew she would leave her mark on the world. Everywhere she goes people always remember her phenomenal energy, no one even knows when she sleeps! In late 2016 she wanted to start a crazy all girl Punk/Rock Band and quickly found her accomplices! With some flyers and posters, she eventually met Caro (lead guitarist) and automatically knew it was a match in heaven… hell they have the same brain! Afterwards, thanks to Facebook she found the sweet, adorable and very smart Aurély (bassist) and the final missing piece, that pop red cherry on a Sunday, the beast, Christine (drums). With passion and dedication, they had one mission in mind, speak for the voiceless! They connect with their fans in the most incredible way and they help them raise awareness on daily injustices through their songs. Soon enough they were signed by Dance Plant Records who is helping and mentoring them along the way to be the best version of themselves and take off on that unbelievable journey…. which is just starting!

White began her journey at Northeastern University in Boston, with experiences at Powderfinger Promotions, WBCN-FM, Q Division and Skope Magazine. Upon seeing The Dresden Dolls play on campus, White introduced herself to front-woman Amanda Palmer, quickly integrating into a core member of the band's team. White and The Dresden Dolls grew up professionally together beginning at SXSW and continuing through White's graduation day, in which she did graduate, but didn't walk due to the band kicking off a three continent tour with Nine Inch Nails at Coachella.   Prior to graduating, White completed work with Boston's legendary promoter, Don Law Company, while working deep within the local music scene before becoming a world-class tour manager. An internship at MTV / VH1 UK solidified White's early love for international business and view of a modern, global economy. Retiring from tour managing at age 23, including runs with Imogen Heap and festivals ranging from Glastonbury to Fuji Rock, White accepted a position at Madison House Inc. in New York working with artists such as The Fiery Furnaces, Dinosaur Jr., The Secret Machines, Angelique Kidjo, and Taj Mahal, as well as members of The String Cheese Incident and Drive-By Truckers.   White wrote a pre-Radiohead In Rainbows “name your own price” distribution model that was passed along to iconic producer Bob Ezrin in 2007. A job offer at Michael Cohl's Live Nation Artists followed with White project managing Zac Brown Band's debut release when he was signed along with Madonna, U2 and Jay-Z.   In 2008, White launched Whitesmith Entertainment with Keri Smith to oversee the careers of musicians and comedians such as Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs, Margaret Cho, The Hush Sound, Amanda Palmer, Eric Burdon, Family of the Year, Hockey, The Autumn Defense, Fox Stevenson and W. Kamau Bell. Whitesmith additionally successfully consulted on Jay Mohr's goal of being nominated for Comedy Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammys.   White is a former Division I scholarship swimmer, who is the daughter and granddaughter of award winning swim coaches. Following the 2012 Olympic games White launched a sports management division with inaugural client Anthony Ervin, an Olympic gold medalist known as the “rock star” of Olympic swimming. In 2016, White signed head U.S. Olympic Women's Swim Coach David Marsh and Olympic gold medalist Kaitlin Sandeno, expanding the sports' division further. White additionally works with the world's leading expert in sports and politics, Dave Zirin. And began working with Japanese-American triplet and two-time Olympian Jay Litherland following his silver medal performance at the Tokyo 202(1) Olympics.   In 2017 White released her debut book, Interning 101; a how-to guide for interns in modern business. The book is based on the “intern manifesto” handbook created by White and is published by 9GiantStepsBooks. How to Build a Sustainable Music Career & Collect All Revenue Streams is White's second book. It is a #1 Amazon best-seller and a course book at countless universities. In 2019, White became an adjunct instructor at New York University's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music within NYU's Tisch School of The Arts. In 2021, How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams launched as a podcast. White brings her best-selling book to life by interviewing hand-picked guests whom she considers experts on each chapter or even the entire book. Wow! Today my guest is superstar music attorney Dina LaPolt. If you don't know who she is, she is one of the most well respected, well known music attorneys in the world. The amount of awards she has is unfathomable: Hollywood Reporter, Billboard's Power 100, Variety, MIDEM, Recording Academy, GRAMMYs. She's also been the attorney for 2Pac's estate, deadmau5, 21 Savage, Britney Spears, and Steven Tyler. She co-founded Songwriters of North America (SONA) in 2015. They're an advocacy organization representing songwriters. She was also instrumental in getting the Music Modernization Act passed in 2018, which has done wonders for songwriters and artists across the board. The Music Modernization Act was the first major update to copyright law in decades. She regularly advocates for artists, musicians, and songwriters on Capitol Hill. This conversation was fiery. We got into it. I told the challenges that independent artists and songwriters are dealing with and how we rarely get a seat at the table. When drafting new laws, independent musicians need a seat at the table. Dina also talked about what she did with the CARES Act. She made sure musicians and songwriters were included in the CARES Act and HEROES Act. Additionally, she made sure that a mixed earners stipulation was added in the follow-up bill. She described what she's working on right now with the new Administration to make sure that musicians and songwriters don't get left behind.Dina is an absolute rockstar on the business and overall. It was such a pleasure and honor to have her on the show. I know you're gonna love this conversation. Durell Peart is a speaker, artist manager, and music business consultant. He has over 15 years of professional entertainment industry experience. He has worked within the areas of artist management, brand development, marketing, promotion, and consulting. He has worked mostly within the urban and pop genres but his skill set can be easily adapted to any genre of music. He made the decision to pursue a career within the music industry because the formula for success in the industry is predicated on loving people and the ability to build meaningful relationships. Durell is a graduate of Full Sail University where he earned a Bachelors Of Science Degree in Entertainment Business as well being named Valedictorian and Advanced Achiever. He started his second company Double N Management & Marketing Group, LLC in 2015, with the primary focus of being a positive advocate for indie creatives. After spending so many years as an artist manager and utilizing his relationships only for the creatives on his immediate roster, he felt that it would be a great idea to expand and help creatives that he wasn’t doing day-to-day management for. He also noticed what was lacking in a majority of the creatives was the lack of education they had in choosing to embark on a professional career as a creative. Durell knew that he could make his greatest impact on his work with indie creatives by making their focus more about becoming global rather than being famous. The most important thing for creatives in today’s marketplace is to establish and execute a framework for building their own unique core audience rather than trying to appeal to everyone. Durell has been hard at work establishing his global footprint since 2016. He started attending the Midem conference in Cannes France where many of his international business partners and friendships began to form and fit into his professional network. He has played a key role in helping to secure international touring opportunities for the creatives ranging in territories including India, Spain, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and France. In May of 2019, Durell secured an exclusive digital distribution deal and licensing partnership deal with Sound Republica Inc in Seoul Korea, which he can now use as a vehicle to help indie creatives build an audience in the 6th largest music market in the world. In January of 2020, Durell became an official partner of New Skool Rules, the number one urban music conference and festival in Europe (Rotterdam, Netherlands). He continues to provide value by aligning himself with strong global movements taking place in several international territories that support indie artists. Durell has been featured in Brash Magazine, Urban Magazine, as the cover story in Urban Grand Stand Digital Magazine: “The Power Issue” & We Are Jersey Magazine & Let Us Live Magazine Issue 2: Love Is Power Edition for the work he does in helping indie creatives. He looks forward to continuing to be a bridge for indie creatives worldwide as an advocate and speaker. Durell was born with a disability called Spastic Diplesia Cerebral Palsy in which he was diagnosed at the age of one. He has been fortunate over the years to be able to impact many people due to his Cerebral Palsy being mild. He is constantly using his voice to show others that even though living with a disability can be difficult at times it’s not impossible to live a normal and meaningful life. The special needs is filled with many who don’t have a platform and voice (literally) to share their concerns and how at times they can feel disconnected from those who can’t understand what it’s like to live with a physical or mental impairment daily. He will continue to work hard and use his voice and platform to be someone who can be their voice and advocate.
