This season on my podcast, Baring It All with Call Me Adam, I am highlighting My Entertainment Idols.Today, I am going back in time and Behind-The-Curtain to bring you this blast from the past, my 2013 interview with Nicki French, award-winning international recording artist, known for her smash hit dance version of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart."In this interview, Nicki is Baring It All with Call Me Adam about:How she handles her success What she loves about musical theatreHow she decides what songs to recordWhat she loves about the creative process in putting an album togetherSo much moreSpecial Thanks:Theme Song by Bobby CroninPodcast Logo by Liam O'DonnellEdited by Adam RothenbergUnderscore Music by CutiqueConnect with Me:Website: www.callmeadam.comFacebook: @CallMeAdamNYCInstagram: @CallMeAdamNYCMore on Nicki French:Nicki was born in Carlisle, Cumbria to Mum Eileen and Dad Joe. Music was destined to be in the family – dad played the drums when he was younger, and mum the violin. Nicki's brother, Tim, is very musical too – a guitarist and singer who is a fabulous song-writer. However, her two sisters, Allison and Carolyn, stayed away from music – probably plenty to listen to already in the household! The family moved down to Tenterden in Kent when Nicki was four years old. Always a keen singer, one of her early memories was sitting next to the radio, listening to the new chart rundown and singing along to all the songs, when Auntie Sally, her Godmother, came in and said to mum and dad, "She'll be a singer when she grows up!"The first ‘gig' came at the age of seven, when Nicki was chosen to sing a solo - the first verse of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" at the Infants' School Christmas Concert! From then on there was no turning back! A few years later she won the local talent contest, and within the year had joined her first band, Krisp, run by Tim and his friend Kelvin. They worked the most salubrious places – working mens' clubs and holiday camps – wooh! From the age of 16, Nicki studied Music and Drama at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, passing her ‘A' Levels two years later. At the annual college musical, she played the lead role of Laurey in Oklahoma!, earning rave reviews for her performance. She then moved up to London and started auditioning for bands and theatre shows. Not many know that Nicki actually was part of a duo in the early 1980s – name of Whisky and Sofa! They released a song called "Dirty Den," about the Eastenders character! It was played on the Radio One Breakfast Show and that was about it! Amazing though, it was written by an extremely well-known writer, Barry Mason. He wrote "The Last Waltz" for Engelbert Humperdinck and "Delilah" for Tom Jones. Credibility sadly was NOT in existence on "Dirty Den."Nicki started working the pubs and clubs, moving onto gay pubs and clubs a short while later – The Spread Eagle in Shoreditch was her first! However the most exciting show for Nicki was at the Player of the Season annual dinner/dance at Tottenham Hotspur FC – her team! They had just signed a new player and were introducing him to the fans – a player by the name of Paul Gascoigne, and Gazza and all the other players got up on stage with her to perform a couple of songs – a special moment. Nicki had been working on the gay scene for some time, when she made one of her regular visits to perform in a club in...

PODCAST EPISODE 65: Natalie Skovron, founder and CEO of DETOXDEN, Sydney and online Being a beekeeper has opened my mind and life up to healthy living and expanded my awareness of using natural materials whenever possible. One of the things I have deeply enjoyed about selling bee-related products over the past ten or more years, is watching the way in which consumers in Australia have leaned into buying locally made, environmentally friendly, health-conscious products for their bodies, their homes, and as gifts for their families and friends. I have also seen the rise of great businesses, run by amazing people with huge hearts and creative visions. One of these fantastic individuals is Natalie Skovron from DETOXDEN, Sydney, and I am delighted to introduce her to my community for episode 65 of the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast. DETOXDEN is an online home furnishing business based in Sydney that thoughtfully selects and sells homewares that are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and locally made. This includes gorgeous cushions, draft stoppers, dinner sets, throw rugs, shower curtains, wall stickers, tea towels, diffusers, bedding, shower curtains, and candles (including Bens Bees beeswax candles!), among many other fantastic items for the home. With a mission to “inspire a world of healthier homes and spaces,” Natalie supplies non-toxic and high-quality homewares that are made with safe materials and can be used day in day out in the home by ourselves and our loved ones. These products have passed Natalie's “Dirty Den checklist”— they do not contain BPA, flame retardants, paraffins, harmful pesticides and insecticides, phthalates, PVC, toxic dyes and inks, toxic heavy metals, or volatile organic compounds. Since COVID-19, we have all come to realise the necessity of a happy home — one that nourishes us and brings a sense of calm and respite from a world that has felt more than a little unstable for some time now. A home is not just a building, an architectural structure; it is a small part of the world where you can feel joyful and safe; somewhere to rejuvenate yourself; somewhere to curl up and relax at the end of a long day. And as our homes are somewhere we have needed to spend more and more time in what feels like never-ending (but necessary) lockdowns (we are currently experiencing Melbourne's fifth lockdown to date), it is my hope that our homes have become places we have grown to love more than before. For that reason, fill your home only with good quality, safe, beautiful, healthy products so that you can settle in without a worry in the world. Tune in to hear Natalie and I chat about DETOXDEN and why safe and non-toxic homewares are so important to fully enjoying life at home. https://www.detoxden.com.au

Welcome back to our regular stroll down the path of silliness, and through the fields of knobheadery (while hopefully avoiding the dog-egg of plaigiarism) that is the Lost In Porridge Plaguecast, brought to you by Primordial Radio. Formed from the daily episodes of the most exciting broadcasting since Dirty Den had an unfortunate coming together with a daffodil, this plaguecast is a collection of this weeks adventures in utter bullshittery. Our intrepid guide is none other than Dr Cornelius Porridge; part gentleman adventurer, part steampunk stand-up, part-time matador. Once he grabs the bull by the horns, the only place he's likely to lead it is straight into the nearest china shop. Mess will likely ensue. Last week, we left our heroes - Porridge, his cybernetic badger accomplice Colon, and the ever-homicidal Pirate Captain Bonney - in the midst of a quest to find mythical beasts across the galaxy. Having arrived at Planet Stirling - a planet seemingly populated by emigrants from that Scottish city - our heroes had discovered an entire family of Loch Ness Monsters was being kept in less-than-optimal conditions. Of course this was a wrong in desperate need of righting. Remember, Buckfast gets you fffffflipping drunk very quickly. Onwards, to adventure! If like us you're sick of being treated as a revenue stream instead of an actual person, and sick of the the same songs on repeat OVER & OVER then come join the evolution of rock & metal radio for FREE for 30 days @ http://primordialradio.com    Image Credit: Tom Brown

It's been a busy week. We were mentioned in Shortlist magazine in order to try and give a boost to a little known podcast called Serial. Hopefully this will help it attract the listeners it deserves. Ann's Mum's birthday was on Friday, so we were preparing all kinds of amazing treats and surprises for her. And Non-Intern Simon's drinking buddy Stewart Lee was on Lewis Schaffer's Nunhead Radio Show before us. So could this week's show match up to this? PRESS REVEAL TO FIND OUT (Assuming 'reveal' is the play button on your mp3 player) Well this week's Super-Special Guest was Mr Biffo from Digitiser (aka Paul Rose) so that meant there was no way we could fail. Unless we tried to get in our house using an Oyster card. Luckily two of us didn't try this so we got to ask Paul lots of questions about the excellent Digitiser, why he left Teletext, why he's brought Digitiser back and what it was like to write for Dirty Den. Simon also started to write a song for Paul to perform at our Christmas Party which will undoubtedly be amazing. But not as amazing as Digitiser 2000 is. Sega Badawi provided some Local News and Super Roger World told us more tales from the coal face of digital acting. Not only that but Ste got more obsessed about the Chuckle Brothers than he usually is (which is very), Ann forgot the title of the film Small Soldiers and she also cut her nails. Oh! And we sold out of tickets for our Christmas Party! But if you missed out on getting a ticket there is a possible chance of getting a ticket. Just listen to the show to find out! Cheerio! Inner Voices: how writers create character

From William Blake to Charles Dickens, authors have written or talked about experiencing auditory verbal hallucinations when writing fiction or hearing voices that others cannot hear. So is this the same when writing for radio or television? And if so, do writers hear characters as clearly as if a real person were speaking or as an external voice outside of themselves? In this podcast we hear from accomplished TV and radio writers Sarah Phelps and Al Smith and from Dr. Jennifer Hodgson, co-author of The Writers' Inner Voices project, the first ever large-scale investigation into how writers and storytellers hear voices. They discuss what it feels like to hear characters, whether there’s a difference between creating characters for television, radio and written fiction and the practicalities of script writing. Sarah Phelps penned the demise of Dirty Den in EastEnders. She brought to life iconic Dickens characters Miss Havisham and Fagin for her TV adaptations of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. She also wrote the World War One drama The Crimson Field and adapted JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy for BBC One. Al Smith has written for TV and radio. He has written for EastEnders and Holby City, co-created teen drama The Cut for BBC Two and wrote Life in the Freezer and The Postman of Good Hope for BBC Radio 4. Dr. Jennifer Hodgson is a writer and teacher. She holds a PhD in English Studies and has taught on the undergraduate Introduction to the Novel and Post-war Fiction and Poetry course at Durham University as well as postgraduate courses such as Research Methods and Resources modules. The podcast is presented by BBC Academy producer Helen Hutchinson.
