HOUR ONE: Just because the Ouija board is made by a board game manufacturer does not mean it should be treated like a toy – as many have discovered. *** The similar game, Charlie Charlie seems more innocent – but is so dangerous that in one school where children were playing it, they had to call in an exorcist. *** And you never know when playing any of these types of games what kind of spirit you might be inviting into our realm – but I can tell you this…. It's never good. They might pretend to be good, but that's far from the truth. And one particular demon has found notoriety through the Ouija board community, a demon you don't want to risk opening a door for. It's name is Zozo.==========HOUR TWO: Did lost cosmonauts make it into space before Yuri Gagarin? (The Tombs in Space) *** Don't take a gift from Gracie Watson's grave... or her life-like statue might cry tears of blood. (Gracie's Ghost) *** Did Bonnie Scott run away? Was she kidnapped? Murdered perhaps? All anyone knew was that no one had a clue where she was. She had simply disappeared without a trace. (The Murder of Bonnie Leigh Scott) *** A latchkey kid comes home to an empty house… or so they thought until they heard footsteps in another room. (The Laundry Room)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: People often encounter strange and frightening things when they experience sleep paralysis – but in one particular story, the horrors began well before going to bed. (Sleep Paralysis in Bangkok) *** Samuel Joselyn was buried in 1810 in a North Carolina cemetery.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that Samuel was actually DEAD at the time of his burial! (Buried Alive in Wilmington) *** in 1894 Rosa Lochner was a witness to murder, but she had been deaf since birth and her spoken vocabulary was limited. So how could she testify against the accused? (Murder In Pantomime) *** A boy wakes to find his previously closed curtains now open – and the only explanation involves a previous resident of the house he's now living in. (Strange Manifestations) *** Mention the word “Chupacabra” and most people will think of a strange, hairless dog-like animal. They are never described as having the ability to fly… until now. (Winged Chupacabras) *** These UFOs aren't shiny metallic discs or cigar-shaped spaceships. They are humanoid – and they fly without the help of a jetpack, wings, cape or even a broom to sit on. And the sightings are still coming in all throughout Mexico. (The Flying Humanoids of Mexico) *** The North Carolina Cherokee have a story about how dangerous it can be even near a calm river – where the waters can suddenly foam and a giant beast can appear on the rocks. (James and the Giant Leech) *** Supernatural women, shadowy men, odd animal sightings, and more… they can all be found at late-night truck stops if you're not careful. This week Megan and Jordan are joined by the wonderful performing, milk drinking, dog loving, plant father that is Thomas Walton! Thomas is here to discuss his journey into the musical theatre industry and how he's giving back to his community.Thomas tells his story from being a young working class lad in ‘Alifax, pursuing theatre despite the all too common lack of opportunity in his area. Discussing the importance of school trips to the theatre, Pantomime and its accessibility, reach, culture and tradition and how it upholds regional theatres, the value and quality of work that is produced by regional theatres, the journey of some of those shows to the West End and how perception of a show can change based on location alone. Thomas also discusses his experience at drama school, casting types and height restrictions, choreographing against those archetypes, partnering, sports massage, muggle jobs and his professional credits - including his experience with puppetry, rightfully likening it to holding an SAS stress position! He then tells the incredible story of how he chose to give back to his community and fill gaps he felt as a child by founding his Community Interest Company - Theatre North. A platform designed to support and celebrate Northern theatre, with hopes to host the North's own version of West End Live! Acting Up could not be more in favour! Thomas shares the companies five goals and the ethos, make sure to check it out @theatre.north !Tangents include Britney the houseplant, our mutual Mia, Borrow my Doggy Jordans rant on height misogyny, Kenyan pen-pals, sustainability and cutting down on dairy! You can find us as @actingupthepodcast on all socials ;)We are @megan_alderson_ & @jordan.skidsArtwork by @those_who.tryWanna be on the pod? Strata pantomime villain takes centre stage

It seems strata may have a new pantomime villain (like we need one).  This week we look at multi-millionaire developer of fancy pants apartment blocks Tim Gurner. He once shocked an economic conference by saying the country needs 40-50 per cent unemployment. If that wasn't bad enough it's alleged he was the first public figure to draw parallels between young people eating smashed avocado and not being able to afford to buy a home. Now this Melbourne developer of luxury apartments, and some of his customers, are in conflict as defects start to surface in his uber-fancy St Moritz block in the Victorian capital. It's not so much how the mighty have fallen (because he hasn't) as how the prices have fallen, and in a rising market. But before that, we look at the new regulations for strata managers that come in nest week (Feb3) and wonder how much difference they will really make. And finally, Jimmy comes up with his radical plan to build more affordable apartments, saying that affordable luxury is impossible but liveable affordability may be the way forwardIf you can tolerate a bit of noise from your neighbours, and one lift instead of two, surely apartment blocks could be built more cheaply without the risk of them falling down. That's all in the Flat Chat Wrap.____________________________________________________Flat Chat is all about apartment living, especially in Australia.Find us on Facebook and Twitter and the Flat Chat website.Send comments and questions to mail@flatchat.com.au.Register to ask and answer questions about apartment living anonymously on the website.Recorded by Jimmy Thomson & Sue Williams; Transcribed by Otter.ai.Find out more about Sue Williams and Jimmy Thomson on their websites.

Pantomime - A British theatrical traditionBooing and hissing the villain, cheering and heckling the cast, throwing sweets and candy back at the audience and a theatre sing along. An awful trip to the theatre you ask? ‘Oh yes it is!' Well actually… ‘Oh no it isn't!' Pantomime is as British as Fish and Chips, a love of queuing and a Sunday Roast but if you live in another part of the globe you may never have heard of, let alone seen, one. Keeping Matthew company this week are guests who will be able to tell you all about it. From how to write and direct the genre to choreography and choosing the best music to fit the show. All from their experiences of working with The Bob Hope theatre in South East London for a local family audience.

Music was destined to be in the family – dad played the drums when he was younger, and mum the violin. Nicki's brother, Tim, is very musical too – a guitarist and singer who is a fabulous song-writer. However, her two sisters, Allison and Carolyn, stayed away from music – probably plenty to listen to already in the household! The family moved down to Tenterden in Kent when Nicki was four years old. Always a keen singer, one of her early memories was sitting next to the radio, listening to the new chart rundown and singing along to all the songs, when Auntie Sally, her Godmother, came in and said to mum and dad, "She'll be a singer when she grows up!"The first ‘gig' came at the age of seven, when Nicki was chosen to sing a solo - the first verse of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" at the Infants' School Christmas Concert! From then on there was no turning back! A few years later she won the local talent contest, and within the year had joined her first band, Krisp, run by Tim and his friend Kelvin. They worked the most salubrious places – working mens' clubs and holiday camps – wooh! From the age of 16, Nicki studied Music and Drama at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, passing her ‘A' Levels two years later. At the annual college musical, she played the lead role of Laurey in Oklahoma!, earning rave reviews for her performance. She then moved up to London and started auditioning for bands and theatre shows. Not many know that Nicki actually was part of a duo in the early 1980s – name of Whisky and Sofa! They released a song called "Dirty Den," about the Eastenders character! It was played on the Radio One Breakfast Show and that was about it! Amazing though, it was written by an extremely well-known writer, Barry Mason. He wrote "The Last Waltz" for Engelbert Humperdinck and "Delilah" for Tom Jones. Credibility sadly was NOT in existence on "Dirty Den."Nicki started working the pubs and clubs, moving onto gay pubs and clubs a short while later – The Spread Eagle in Shoreditch was her first! However the most exciting show for Nicki was at the Player of the Season annual dinner/dance at Tottenham Hotspur FC – her team! They had just signed a new player and were introducing him to the fans – a player by the name of Paul Gascoigne, and Gazza and all the other players got up on stage with her to perform a couple of songs – a special moment. Nicki had been working on the gay scene for some time, when she made one of her regular visits to perform in a club in...

[originally published on Patreon February 23, 2024] In this episode I discuss Colombia's relationship to United Fruit Company aka El Pulpo. In particular, I open with the massive strikes against UFC in 1928 culminating in the massacre at Ciénaga which was so memorably fictionalized in Gabriel García Márquez's Cien años de soledad.  From there, I discuss the curious case of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán and his assassination in 1948 which triggered El Bogotazo, a wave of civil unrest and violence that would affect Colombia for years to come. I discuss the Rosicrucian-brainwashed patsy shooter Juan Roa Sierra and his manipulation by a German astrologer spy named Johann Umland Gerät.  It gets even weirder as a track down claims by a Sicilian-American WWII vet named John Meeples Espirito who appears to have been involved in Operation ARTICHOKE and who found his way to revolutionary Cuba. When arrested, he told Cuban intelligence of his role in the assassination of Gaitán - claims which Cuban intelligence could never definitively prove and so did not widely publish.  The potential reason for that, according to some, was because of Fidel Castro's role and actions in El Bogotazo, which remains obscured, as through a glass darkly. Much remains unknown.

Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

Bonus blurb. 16 Songs of 1966: No.17: Pantomime Everywhere It's ChristmasIn 1966 there was a 17th song - the only thing heard from the Beatles between Revolver and Strawberry Fields Forever. For their annual Christmas fan club disc instead of the usual thank yous, they produced a collection of music and sketches. Like Revolver and Strawberry Fields, it showed where they'd been, and where they were going.  Live on tape from Dublin & Belfast, it's Nothing Is Real. Website: http://www.nothingisrealpod.comTwitter: @BeatlesPodFacebook Group: http://tiny.cc/NIRFBGYouTube: http://tiny.cc/NIRYT Support: http://tiny.cc/NIRsupportSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/nothing-is-real-a-beatles-podcast. On episode 50, Charles is rudely prevented from staging his radio play by the Ghost of Luther Abel. After that, he talks to Rafael A. Mangual about crime. (Here's his book.) Among the questions they discuss are why Rafael believes that the U.S. has a "decarceration problem"; whether too many Americans are in jail; whether the justice system is "racialized"; what we should do about police brutality; whether voters will punish politicians who make them less safe; and what law-and-order policymakers got wrong in the 1990s.The dial-up tone in the introduction was recorded by lintphishx and is used under a CC 3.0 License.
