This is a recording I made during the Surva Festival in Pernik in 2018. I was walking along Pernik's main street (Krakra Pernishki Sq.) in the late afternoon/early evening during the main day of the festivities. This is one of the many folk bands accompanying "kukeri", who are presenting their costumes during the festival. UNESCO listing: Surva Festival in Pernik Recorded by Anna Nacher. “What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back!”If you were really down with the cool kids in 1984, you would have most definitely have been passing around the school prized C90 cassettes featuring much copied Streetsounds compilations. And somewhere in there was Kurtis Blow's AJ Scratch track with those immortal sampled words from the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972. Straight out onto The BMXs and down to throw some funky worm shapes on that strip of lino!Or, in this writer's case, 1984 was mainly spent in a bedroom hovering over the play and pause button to catch a clean edit (without Simon Bates) of Two Tribes, still at number one after 5 weeks! But which mix would we get this week? Now, THIS was anticipation, pop kids!1984. A pop year of decadence, contradictions, conflict, controversy and coming of age. A year that authors (and the BBC) told us would feature impending, inevitable Armageddon. Annihilation, it turned out, came in the shape of a plethora of 12” mixes, plastic smiles, snoods, 808 drum machines, hairspray, neon and (red) balloons. How was it for you?In the third decade of the 21st century, a time surely we wouldn't (a) remember 1984 or (b) still be around to remember 1984, the team at NOW Music HQ presented the second in a (now) glorious series of curated Yearbooks. And what an album (and accompanying extra volume!) we have to rediscover. The sun is most definitely shining brighter than Doris Day!So for this special episode we're joined by two poptastic friends of the show to take a deep dive into 1984. Journalist, DJ and author Ian Wade and journalist, author and broadcaster Jude Rogers.Jude can be found contributing musings and writing about music, culture and much more in The Guardian, Observer and The Quietus amongst many others. Her first (best selling!) book, The Sound of Being Human: How Music Shapes Our Lives is available through White Rabbit books.Ian has written for Classic Pop, Record Collector, The Quietus, Official Charts, Sunday Times Culture as well as doing time at such titles as Smash Hits and The Face many years ago. He has worked as a PR on BBC's Later… with Jools Holland and occasionally DJs at Spiritland and Duckie. And his debut book 1984: The Year Pop went Queer is published by NineEight Books in July 2024.And whilst we don't take a forensic look at every one of the 80 tracks on the 1984 Yearbook (and the further 60 on the extra volume) we instead provide you with an opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, culture, music, genres, tribes and (school!) fashion that makes this year so thoroughly iconic for so many reasons.Join us then, as we turn up the neon and dance through mutually agreed destruction in celebration of 1984! The Morgan Khan Interviews (Part Two) - The Rebirth of Street Sounds The Black Spy Podcast Season 11 Episode 0006 This week's and next week's Black Spy Podcast features the rise, fall and rebirth of Morgan Khan, the legendary music mogul and entrepreneur who played a pivotal role in introducing various genres of black and urban music to the UK and Europe. Morgan was the founder of Street Sounds, a record label that launched in 1982 and became the market leader of compilation albums, featuring the best of electro, hip-hop, house, and other styles of street music. Morgan was ahead of his time, licensing tracks from the US that were otherwise unavailable or expensive for UK consumers. He also discovered and developed many successful artists, such as Imagination, Jamiroquai, Dina Carroll, and Humanoid. We hear how Morgan worked with most of the major record companies and music publishers and hear how the anti Black racism of the industry executives, 99% White, failed to support Black artists to anything like the same degree as they did White artists. In addition to his Street Sounds label Morgan had success in producing and promoting events and concerts. He is credited as pioneering electro/hip-hop, house, hip house and acid music in Europe. Morgan's contribution to the music industry is exceptional and his influence is still felt today. I wasn't even going to do an episode. I was going to record the street sounds outside this hotel in downtown Cleveland, OH and use them in an episode, but then I figured why bother? Just use it now. I might record some more though. There's some guy revving his car engine in a real obnoxious way. That might be useful somewhere...down the line. I'm so bored.Support the showhunchbunny.com

For the ninth episode of Tales From A Disappearing City I am joined by Ben McCusker, member of the Dead Silence Syndicate and co founder of Audio Illusion Recordings. We first met in the 90's at an illegal warehouse party and have been good friends ever since. In this episode we discuss Ben's early music influences including attending with his brother and his mum, the legendary UK Fresh event at Wembley Arena in 1986. This was a showcase for all the underground Electro and rap music that was being played from the Streetsounds compilations by the UK's youth at the time and was an inspiring breakdance Woodstock for the emerging UK hip hop generation. We also delve into Ben listening to Mike Allen's rap show on Capital as well as early Pirate Radio from stations such as Smart Boys FM and Green Apple. We finish this first part of our chat with Ben discovering the local renegade party crew, The Fear Teachers and getting the first taste of rave with all night parties featuring strobes and weird bleeps and tones in the Surrey countryside.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Stas THEE Boss is no stranger to KEXP. The former host of our station's beloved weekly hip-hop show, Street Sounds, Stas has been a fixture of Seattle since she emerged as part of the duo THEE Satisfaction. Though Stas has since moved away, her sound, influence, and ingenuity can still be felt reverberating in Seattle. The rapper and producer has been busy dropping singles the past couple of years following 2020's immaculate On the Quarner. “Don't Crash” finds Stas steeped in deep house, capturing the feeling of blurry, 4 a.m. euphoria on the dancefloor. As always, Stas' voice is the smooth tether holding you down. It's an exciting new dimension to her ever-expanding sounds and ideas in her catalog. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week's guest is my new friend Phil Ward aka Lord Warddd. We chatted about the 1984 hip-hop compilation Street Sounds Electro 4. Once again, I've broken my personal rule of covering compilations, but this was too interesting to pass up. Street Sounds Electro 4 isn't available for streaming on Spotify, but you can check out the full compilation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b37WCOv3QWU Phil talks about how influential this compilation was in his musical journey, and opens my mind about early hip-hop, techno, electro, dance music, as well as Northern Soul. Phil also was in the band, Lo Fidelity Allstars, in the mid to late 90s. They are most known for their 1998 debut album, "How to Operate With a Blown Mind," which featured the song "Battle Flag", featuring Pigeonhed. That song was featured on tv shows such as ER, Sopranos, and films such as, Coyote Ugly, Very Bad Things, Drillbit Taylor and much more. Phil Ward makes music under the name Lord Warddd, which recently released an "The Virtual Bison EP," on Plastic Miracles records. Check that out here! https://lordwarddd.bandcamp.com/album/the-virtual-bison-ep

From his beginning with a pen and paper in 2009 to the release of his 2017 full-length debut Watercolor, Porter Ray has been one of the increasingly prominent, hardest-working talents in Seattle for some time. His art has never been more fully realized than it is on Watercolor, which finds him meditating on his life in Seattle and the death of his brother with poignance and incision laid across smoky, almost-levitating beats. In this session on Street Sounds with Stas THEE Boss, Porter Ray tells his story up to Watercolor and highlights five tracks from the album.
