Gary Mabbutt is a real legend of that historic club – Tottenham Hotspur of North London – but Gary was quite lucky to get that far as he nearly died as a boy while at his youth club. He did not die of course, but was diagnosed with what was then a pretty unknown condition - that of type 1 diabetes – he was told by the doctor that his football career was over and he would have to take a lot of precautions and master his diet moving forward just to insure his life would not be cut short. He was 17 and his world was shattered, but given his nature he didn't give up and with his father, he did what any stubborn teenage boy would do - he went looking for another doctor. It took 4 tries, but he found one that walked him through the care he had to take, explained to him the nature of blood sugar and insulin, and all the ins/outs of living with this condition – his pregame meal, his post game meal, his sleep and of course, what to do in case of emergency. He would go on to play nearly 500 times for Tottenham, over the course of 16 seasons – 11 as captain. He played with or against the likes of: Enzo Scifo, Dennis Bergkamp, Paul Gascoigne, Jurgen Klinsmann and Johan Cruyff. As an aside, the other three doctors that recommended retirement all spoke to Gary over the years – congratulated him on his success, marveled at what he was able to accomplish with his disease - and further that his career would provide a blueprint for all the diabetics that would came after him, something that Gary is very proud of. He is a true legend of White Hart Lane, an inspiration for those that share his ailment and a gentleman above all. Gary Mabbutt - EP 23 Thanks for listening! We appreciate your support. Alan Stubbs, the captain who led Everton to fourth place in 2004/05 – their highest ever Premier League position – is the latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. A lifelong Evertonian from Kirkby, Stubbs was a passionate match-going Blues supporter as a youngster and was also on the club's books as a boy, but his professional career started down the East Lancs Road with Bolton Wanderers. The former centre-half recalls his breakthrough spell with the Trotters, an attempt by Everton to sign him – that he didn't know about until years later – his big move to Celtic, including some poignant revelations about his cancer battles, and finally getting the chance to join his beloved Blues in his 30th year. Stubbs enjoyed two separate spells at Goodison Park, regretting the circumstances which prompted him to quit in between, while he also lifts the lid on some of the great characters he played alongside, such as Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney, as well as offering a candid take on David Moyes' evolving managerial methods. Revisit our exclusive interview with David Moyes as the former Everton manager is set to return to Goodison Park for a second stint in charge at the club. Back in September 2024, Chris Beesley spoke to an extra special guest for the ninth episode of our Goodison Park: My Home series as he was joined by David Moyes, the longest serving and most successful Everton manager of the Premier League era. Meeting in Lancashire, the pair discuss the Scot's reign of over 11 years as Blues boss as he steered them to nine top half finishes – including a club record fourth position in the Premier League in 2004/05 – feats that brought him a hat-trick of LMA Manager of the Year awards. Taking over a team that had finished in the top half just once in the first decade of the competition, a then 38-year-old Moyes arrived at Goodison Park in March 2002 and transformed a squad containing luminaries such as Paul Gascoigne and David Ginola into an upwardly mobile outfit with hungry young players. The Scot lifts the lid on why he chose Everton; his coining of the phrase ‘The People's Club', transfer buys; big characters; trophy regrets following the FA Cup final and European run plus many other memorable moments at a unique football venue that he always tried to get the best out of and which remains dear to his heart. Now Moyes is set for a sensational return.
Paul Gascoigne's daughter has told Sky News she was groomed and sexually assaulted by Mohamed al Fayed when she worked at Harrods as a teenager. Speaking publically about her experience for the first time, British model Bianca Gascoigne joins more than 60 women who have made allegations against Al Fayed since a documentary on the businessman who died last year. On this episode, Niall Paterson is joined by Sarah-Jane Mee who spoke to Bianca, as we hear her tell her story. Michael Wright acknowledges the disconnect between the desired playing style and the actual approach to training and analysis, attributing it to a siloed approach and emphasizing the confusion it creates for players.Continuous Knowledge Sharing and Learning-31:01Martyn Rothwell emphasizes the need for a continuous knowledge-sharing environment where empirical and experiential knowledge are equally valued, and interdisciplinary collaboration is encouraged. He acknowledges the challenges that come with this approach, including managing personal skills and potential biases. Michael Wright adds that constant retraining and education of staff are necessary to maintain alignment with the team's principles and goals, and suggests the idea of an outside perspective to challenge and promote continuous improvement.Role of Performance Director and Interdisciplinary Teams-38:42Martyn Rothwell and Michael Wright delve into the changing responsibilities of a performance director, highlighting the transition towards a more facilitative role. They also examine the potential underutilization of certain aspects within interdisciplinary teams and the importance of day-to-day oversight for team efficiency. The conversation touches on the historical evolution of multidisciplinary teams in the context of football management. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This season on my podcast, Baring It All with Call Me Adam, I am highlighting My Entertainment Idols.Today, I am going back in time and Behind-The-Curtain to bring you this blast from the past, my 2013 interview with Nicki French, award-winning international recording artist, known for her smash hit dance version of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart."In this interview, Nicki is Baring It All with Call Me Adam about:How she handles her success What she loves about musical theatreHow she decides what songs to recordWhat she loves about the creative process in putting an album togetherSo much moreSpecial Thanks:Theme Song by Bobby CroninPodcast Logo by Liam O'DonnellEdited by Adam RothenbergUnderscore Music by CutiqueConnect with Me:Website: www.callmeadam.comFacebook: @CallMeAdamNYCInstagram: @CallMeAdamNYCMore on Nicki French:Nicki was born in Carlisle, Cumbria to Mum Eileen and Dad Joe. Music was destined to be in the family – dad played the drums when he was younger, and mum the violin. Nicki's brother, Tim, is very musical too – a guitarist and singer who is a fabulous song-writer. However, her two sisters, Allison and Carolyn, stayed away from music – probably plenty to listen to already in the household! The family moved down to Tenterden in Kent when Nicki was four years old. Always a keen singer, one of her early memories was sitting next to the radio, listening to the new chart rundown and singing along to all the songs, when Auntie Sally, her Godmother, came in and said to mum and dad, "She'll be a singer when she grows up!"The first ‘gig' came at the age of seven, when Nicki was chosen to sing a solo - the first verse of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" at the Infants' School Christmas Concert! From then on there was no turning back! A few years later she won the local talent contest, and within the year had joined her first band, Krisp, run by Tim and his friend Kelvin. They worked the most salubrious places – working mens' clubs and holiday camps – wooh! From the age of 16, Nicki studied Music and Drama at West Kent College in Tonbridge, Kent, passing her ‘A' Levels two years later. At the annual college musical, she played the lead role of Laurey in Oklahoma!, earning rave reviews for her performance. She then moved up to London and started auditioning for bands and theatre shows. Not many know that Nicki actually was part of a duo in the early 1980s – name of Whisky and Sofa! They released a song called "Dirty Den," about the Eastenders character! It was played on the Radio One Breakfast Show and that was about it! Amazing though, it was written by an extremely well-known writer, Barry Mason. He wrote "The Last Waltz" for Engelbert Humperdinck and "Delilah" for Tom Jones. Credibility sadly was NOT in existence on "Dirty Den."Nicki started working the pubs and clubs, moving onto gay pubs and clubs a short while later – The Spread Eagle in Shoreditch was her first! However the most exciting show for Nicki was at the Player of the Season annual dinner/dance at Tottenham Hotspur FC – her team! They had just signed a new player and were introducing him to the fans – a player by the name of Paul Gascoigne, and Gazza and all the other players got up on stage with her to perform a couple of songs – a special moment. Nicki had been working on the gay scene for some time, when she made one of her regular visits to perform in a club in...

Our latest Bred a Blue podcast guest is the answer to a great quiz question! Who is the only player to have been a teammate of Paul Gascoigne, Wayne Rooney and Jordan Pickford? Top marks if you went for former Everton reserves centre-half Sean O'Hanlon. Known throughout football as ‘Chief', O'Hanlon never quite made the breakthrough at Everton after joining as a 10-year-old, but he did share a dressing room with Gazza and Rooney along the way. Indeed, he was Rooney's roommate when the 16-year-old ‘Boy Wonder' embarked on his first ever senior pre-season trip in 2002. After gaining some loan experience at Swindon Town, O'Hanlon decided to make the break from Everton in 2004 – realising that it was going to too tough to oust Alan Stubbs, David Weir, Joseph Yobo, David Unsworth or Peter Clarke from the central defensive berths. From Swindon he moved to MK Dons, for whom he scored at Wembley in the EFL Trophy final, then north of the border to Hibernian, before seeing out his playing days with Carlisle United and Stockport County. It was at Carlisle that O'Hanlon played in front of a teenage goalkeeper on-loan from Sunderland. "You could see even then that Jordan [Pickford] was heading for the top," O'Hanlon said. The former Blue hung his boots up in 2016 and then four years later, his young son became an internet sensation when, during the Covid lockdown, he recreated many famous goals in his back garden! The little fellow attracted the attention of the world's media and O'Hanlon senior found himself conducting radio interviews for stations in Brazil, Italy and many more besides!
