This week on The Plug Podcast, David drops in for a conversation about  the history of downtown culture, what can be learned from the challenges that the city has faced, and contemplate what a post-covid New York City might look like

Jeanette Montgomery Barron is an established photographer that became known for her portraits of the New York art world in the 1980s. Some of the iconic personalities she has photographed include Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe and Cindy Sherman. Together with our hosts, they discuss the evolution of art from photography from film to Instagram. Episode Highlights:12:50 - One of the scariest things for an artist to do is to photograph another artist. It happened when I photographed Robert Mapplethorpe, I was very nervous but he made me feel very comfortable and was very sweet. 14:25 - The first time I photographed Warhol, he didn't give much time. It was in the lobby of The Factory that was on Union Square. He gave me 5 minutes! Then he got to know me and got to give me 20/30 minutes at the end. 23:50 - I think Instagram is great. It doesn't change the role of a professional photographer. It's used as a tool to get response from other photographer, creatives, and people looking for certain images.  Learn more about our guests: Jeannette Montgomery Barron:InstagramTwitter Learn more about the Accutron watch here, and follow @AccutronWatch on Instagram. Conveying Basquiat’s personal magnetism, eccentricity and non-stop creativity without romanticizing him, BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT serves as another chapter in the ongoing effort to rescue the artist from his own hype. To tell this story, Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period. Drawing upon their memories and anecdotes, the film also uses period film footage, music and images  to visually evoke the era, drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City-pre AIDS, President Reagan, the real estate and art booms – before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT follows Basquiat's life pre-fame and how New York City, the times, the people and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante and many others. Sara Driver made her directorial debut with the short film YOU ARE NOT I in 1981, which she adapted from the 1948 Paul Bowles short story of the same name. The film, named as one of the best movies of the 1980s in a Cahiers du Cinéma critics’ poll, was lost for many years until its rediscovery in 2008 among Bowles’ belongings in Tangier. Director Sara Driver joins us for engaging conversation with one of the late-twentieth century’s brightest and innovative artist.

I can't say I imagined 20 years of getting that call. At the Fahrenheit 451 party last night (May 8 '18) you all could hear how concept meets execution and you could see how the party went from warm glow to blazing hot. Once upon a time, about 13 years ago, or whenever the last season of the Sopranos was happening, I got the call to play the last gathering of that game changing series (I actually did a wrap party set up on set in Tony's kitchen once). After a few years of doing entertainment industry parties, I noticed a pattern... somewhat of a template or format that favored the safe and obvious. Humbly, I asked, during a meeting at HBO headquarters, if I could shatter that plain - buttressing my suggestion by offering to be the DJ equivalent of their classic motto from the 90s - "It's not TV it's HBO." "Your events should not sound like any other network's party, your parties should be as unique as your programming." (Paraphrasing) From there, I asked for the 1st 90mins of that Sopranos party to show what I had in mind. At some point Little Steven from Bruce Springsteen's band looked at me and gave me the thumbs up (I'd pitched doing a Classic Rock set to open the party) and the events folks noticed and also gave me thumbs up. Highlight of that night was having David Chase - creator of the Sopranos, come up on stage with his wife and they both told me how they noticed and enjoyed what I was doing with the music. Side note to that story is that the Sopranos party was on a Sunday...the night before, I was in Paris and the night before that, I was in Ireland... BTW, friends in Ireland have offered me space for my 1st lecture that will weave DJ culture with sociology and a bit of history. #10: A Meditation On Cheese

Outsiders Journey Podcast

Not everyone is blessed to have a cheese-filled morning every day; a sublime experience upon awakening that has allowed me to do much of what you witness here right now. And I wish I could cheese up every morning. But life sometimes makes it into merely a wish, a longing that goes unfulfilled when things get a bit more hectic than I'd care for them to be. "WTF with the cheese reference, Ken?" you may be asking yourself. Well, I've baited you. Now for the switch. The cheese represents whatever you must do to start your day in peace For me, this means cheese, dates, crackers, coffee and a good book. The ritual of eating the first while digesting the second is something that brings me a great deal of satisfaction. It also opens my mind to new worlds, perspectives, and ideas. And it sets my internal energies in a way that expands and accelerates my ability to continue becoming more than I was before. Becoming more useful to those of you following me. I recently got caught up in some commitments that kept me from my cheese for months. I longed for my cheese. And I did NOT like how my life was evolving in the absence of the cheese. So, if I may confuse the shit out of you by switching metaphors even more: the cheese became the carrot at the end of my project stick; the thing I looked forward to as a reward for doing the thing I was not really enjoying. And it helped me stay sane as I completed my obligations. I did what I said I'd do for someone - a situation I went into already detesting how it would shape my day - thereby keeping my word. And I helped some good people through a tough time, leaving them with a good taste in their mouths for my capabilities should we ever cross paths again. And the cheese I eventually returned to...was good. Like, Zen good. Outsiders heed: however your day starts sets the tone, quite often, for the rest of the day. It also has a great effect on whether or not you're getting closer to success, or treading water (dying) as you watch it get further away from you. What's your cheese? Subscribe To OJ Podcast!
