MC Design Academy is designed to be a space where I get to share my expertise with you, where you'll get to learn all about visual merchandising, design, display, retail, and everything in between. Come along as I practice my craft and be sure to like, subscribe, and follow our socials to keep updated. See you in the merchandising land of MC Design Academy!A printmaking graduate from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Michelle Galletta is the founder of Kiriki Press. The idea was inspired by Michelle wanting to make her niece Madeleine an embroidered doll but couldn't find a pattern anywhere. Michelle decided to learn how to embroider so she could make her a set of three owl dolls to play with. It was difficult to find contemporary embroidery patterns that weren't overly simplistic, let alone embroidered doll patterns, so Michelle ended up designing her own. As she was making Madeleine's owls, she became fascinated with embroidery: the vibrant colors, the countless variety of stitches, and the calming effect it had on her. After several years of improving her embroidery skills (and a ton of design work), Kiriki Press was born. It was developed in the hopes of giving others the chance to make something precious with their own hands. Kiriki Press was launched in December 2012 with seven patterns, and the collection has grown over the years and is currently expanding to include a range of other DIY products. Michelle was chosen as a featured seller on Etsy and has been a contributor to Mollie Makes books and magazines. The company has been featured in Uppercase, Canadian Living, Chatelaine, Bust Magazine, and Homespun, as well as many other print publications and craft blogs. Here, Michelle takes us inside her shop and shares how she moved from her prototype dolls into full production. She also talks about how she transitioned from what she thought was her dream job into starting a business of her own. Michelle shares her experience at her very first show, how she handled business growth through the pandemic, and where she finds inspiration. What's Inside:How Michelle moved from prototype to full productionMichelle's experience at her first showWhere Michelle finds inspirationMentioned In This Episode:www.kirikipress.comKiriki Press on InstagramKiriki Press on FacebookKiriki Press on Pinterest

Tanya Pearson is a Public Historian and Director of the Women of Rock Oral History Project, a collection of digital interviews and written transcripts documenting the lives and careers of (women-identified) rock musicians. A documentary film based on the interviews is currently in production as well as an oral history of rock music. Why Marianne Faithfull Matters, her contribution to the University of Texas Press' Music Matters Series, was published in July, 2021. Her “work” has appeared in The Washington Post, Bust Magazine, Memoir Mixtapes, PopMatters, and some blogs, and journals. When she's not working she enjoys writing, rock climbing, playing in her band Feminine Aggression, and watching The Golden Girls with her dog Andrew. We had the pleasure of interviewing Taali over Zoom video!Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer Taali unveils her evocative new single ‘It Comes For You.' A seasoned songsmith who has collaborated with such luminaries as Aloe Blacc, Moby, José James and Mali Music, Taali has received acclaim in Billboard, NPR, KCRW and Bust Magazine.Working with Grammy-winning bassist Ben Williams (who also plays with visionary jazz icons Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington) and drummer Dustin Kaufman (who also plays with other boundary-pushing acts like St. Lucia and Moon Boots), Taali takes us on a late night emotional journey through the wreckage of post-pandemic 2023. Waves of shifting synths and shimmering vocal choirs recast the downbeat ethereality of such artists as Beach House, St. Vincent, Portishead and Kate Bush, as Taali explores the peaks and valleys of experiencing - and ultimately overcoming - our collective modern trauma. The song is accompanied by an atmospheric lo-fi video that was shot on Taali's journeys around the world over the last two years. Out March 10, Taali's upcoming self-titled album is her most ambitious and personal statement yet. Inspired by her Jewish roots and wandering spirit, taali features musicians from Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra, and explores themes of hope and redemption amid our modern state of anxiety. Check out a 3-song sampler here.“They say that there is nothing new under the sun. But, they, surely, had not heard of Taali yet. Taali, the singer-songwriter-producer is nothing short of refreshing.” -Bust Magazine“What stands out most about Taali's productions are the emphasis on vocals - ethereal in all the right spots and powerful when needed.” -KCRW“Taali fuses a beguiling mix of layered vocals, chamber pop and avant-electronica to directly address trauma, love, and identity.” -Guitar Girl MagazineWe want to hear from you! This episode takes a detour from the usual SHEROES artist interview to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the O.G. feminist lifestyle and culture publication, BUST Magazine. Founded in 1993 by three women in New York City, BUST started as a ‘zine, made of stapled pages and a passion for their cause: to make feminism cool again. Now a quarterly magazine, BUST has kept going despite financial challenges along the way - and a world which still favors hyper-sexualized images of women on magazine covers and advertisers that sell unattainable standards of youth and beauty. New York -based UNI and The Urchins was started by “bassist/director/engineer/probably wizard” Charlotte Kemp Muhl (Bust Magazine), and in lead singer Jack James Busa, they have an androgynous alien who brings a glorious glam rock sensibility to the band's mix of psychedelia and post punk. The band has just released their debut LP, called Simulator, full of catchy, dance-y, sometimes cheeky songs about a world made dizzy by media and technology. The conversation ranges from using AI – a neural network to generate lyrics, a love of David Bowie, their favorite Japanese food (the sticky, slimy kind), high school Latin, ASMR, waiting rooms, observations about the disappearing middle class, the New York music scene, growing up in the South, to tuba sound effects and more. Also, the band plays live in-studio. They play at Elsewhere in New York on March 3, and will be in Austin at South by Southwest. On this episode of the Period Chats Podcast, documentary film maker Shelby Hadden joins us to talk about her wildly wonderful, impactful documentary: Tightly Wound. Based on an essay she published in Bust Magazine, the animated short film chronicles her experiences with vaginismus and pelvic floor pain. After a kickstarter shout-out in Cosmo, an article in Media Wire and much more, the film has 4 million views and has been all over the world. Shelby and I talk about how sharing your story publicly can be so many different things. It can be freeing and liberating to share, super helpful to others to hear, and a powerful influence on culture - but it can simultaneously be intimidating and unpredictable to post your life's details on the internet. She explains that creating the film was a coming out type of experience for her, because there were many family members and friends who still didn't know about her health journey. Shelby shares how she couldn't use a tampon as an adolescent, but didn't find pelvic floor physical therapy (the treatment that has helped her the most) until age 21. She then found herself at the forefront of a decade-long rise in awareness on the topic, in a culture that's moving from young women like her taking 7 years plus to get an accurate diagnosis, to an internet-connected world where pelvic floor physical therapists are posting on Tik Tok and Instagram helping people learn the basics about the disorder. Shelby tells us what the process looked like to create the film, and what her network, team and community looked like during the process. It's so beautiful that people with vaginismus and other pelvic floor issues can now point to this well-made film and say to their family, friends, or potential romantic partners, “This is what I have.” Insurance doesn't always cover pelvic floor therapy, and there are different rules in different states about referrals and the number of sessions that may get approved, but Shelby leaves us with this wise advice: don't give up finding the great treatment that you deserve. We talk about other treatments such as Botox, which some people have had results with for vaginismus, and of course a good therapist should be part of your team as well. I'm thankful for this conversation and for a chance to disarm the shame and secrecy some people feel in their experiences. Whatever your hopes are with regards to pelvic floor dysfunction of any kind, they are completely valid; none of those things are wrong to want and feel, so don't give up fighting for your desires and goals. Lydia Lunch is a true radical in every sense of the word. A high priestess of punk, she arrived in New York when she was just 16 in the mid-'70s and made a name for herself downtown with her band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. That band became synonymous with the hugely influential No Wave movement and launched Lunch's multifaceted career of over 40 years as an actor, performance poet, writer, public speaker, solo artist, and frontwoman for her subsequent bands 8-Eyed Spy, 13.13, Shotgun Wedding, Big Sexy Noise, and Retrovirus. Now, her life and career are being celebrated in a new documentary by director Beth B called Lydia Lunch: The War is Never Over—currently making the rounds at festivals and art house cinemas nationwide. On Lunch's provocative episode of BUST's Poptarts podcast, she makes extremely controversial comments concerning Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Cuomo, R. Kelly, and much, much, more.
Gen Xers and young Baby Boomers can be nostalgic about the freedoms of growing up in the 1970s. But there was a darker side to that era, too, especially for girls. Feminism was on the ascent, but the sexual revolution was moving even faster, bringing profound changes to behavioral norms and assumptions about pleasure and consent. In her new memoir, The Big Hurt, Erika Schickel recalls a childhood that was both magical and ruinous, one in which she played freely on the streets of her Manhattan neighborhood but, at the same time, attended a private school where (with the blessing of the headmaster) Hollywood casting agents scouted for girls to audition for the role of a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby (incidentally, Jeffrey Epstein was teaching math at this school at the time). As a teen at boarding school, Erika was seduced by a male teacher and asked by the administration to leave before graduation. Her mother, meanwhile, applauded the relationship and Erika even briefly lived with the teacher before heading off to college. Decades later, while living the life of a conventional married mom in Los Angeles, Erika found herself embroiled in an obsessive affair with the legendary crime writer James Ellroy, a man who was himself damaged by the violence and tragedy of his youth. Erika spoke to Meghan about the book and the revelations that came to her over the more than ten years it took her to write it. During those years, the #MeToo movement came along, further complicating Erika's story while making it all the more relevant. Guest Bio: Erika Schickel is the author the memoir The Big Hurt (Hachette Books, 2021) and You're Not the Boss of Me: Adventures of a Modern Mom (Kensington Books, 2007). She has taught memoir and essay writing at UCLA and privately. Her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, LA City Beat, Salon, Ravishly, Tin House, Bust Magazine, and The LA Review of Books, among others.

Bust Magazine calls her “comedy gold” while Indiewire describes her as “a fresh and unique voice in the world of stand-up comedy.” She was included in Variety Magazine's prestigious Top 10 Comedians To Watch list, and SLiNK Magazine just crowned her “The New Queen of Comedy.” Rolling Stone recently hailed her as one of the 10 Comedians You Need To Know declaring “she speaks and they simply fall in line behind her.” Dulcé has been a correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah since 2017. Her segments, including “New York Fashion Week: Where Cultural Appropriation Never Goes Out of Style” and “Dumb Solutions to Policing Problems” have garnered millions of views. This November, she will star alongside Malin Akerman, Alec Baldwin, and Bella Thorne in the action-comedy feature film Chick Fight. Additionally, Dulcé launched her podcast That Black Ass Show on Starburns Audio in April 2020. Every Wednesday, Sloan talks to special guests to celebrate some of America's iconic black shows that have and continue to shape the world. From 90's classics like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Martin, to modern shows like Insecureand Atlanta, Sloan does a deep dive into the show's origin, classic moments and fun facts that everyone can enjoy. In October 2019, Dulcé's Comedy Central Presents stand-up special premiered on Comedy Central. The New York Times included the half hour in their “Best Comedy of 2019” roundup. She will also be seen in the cast of the upcoming animated FOX series The Great North, joining an ensemble of comedy heavyweights including Jenny Slate, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and Paul Rust. The series, from the creators of FOX's hit animated show Bob's Burgers, will premiere in 2021 and has already been picked up for a second season. Dulcé has “a voice that doesn't pander or bully but comes at you straight. With a chaser of Joy,” according to Ozy.com. She offers a fresh and honest perspective that speaks truth to power and eviscerates the status quo. She can currently be seen in OWN's four-part series Black Women Own the Conversation, in which the world sees black women coming to together to talk about the issues that are important to them. In addition to The Daily Show, she has made multiple appearances as a correspondent on “E! News Daily.” She has also been featured on several comedy fan-favorite TV series including Comedy Central's This Week at the Comedy Cellar, TBS' Conan, Amazon Studios' Inside Jokes, TruTV's Comedy Knockout, and MTV's Acting Out. She was also a cast member on the FOX pilot Type-A opposite Eva Longoria and the Amy Poehler project Dumb Prince for NBC. Dulcé is a favorite on the comedy festival circuit, with appearances at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Melbourne Comedy Festival, and the Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver installments of the Just For Laughs Festival.
