The music NEVER stopped. On this episode we dive into one of the better pop culture documentaries that we have seen in recent memory in 'Disco's Revenge'.In the early 70s, the beat child of New York's Black and LGBTQ+ communities was born on the city's underground dance floor. Disco emerged as an exuberant musical genre, a vital social movement and a vibrant culture before enduring a vicious backlash nearly a decade later. In our collective pop-culture imagination, Disco's merely a fad relegated to soft-focus memories of  Saturday Night Fever and Studio 54.  It is a pulsating deep dive into the very soul of disco music and its enduring impact across genres and history, told by the people who created it, nurtured it, and in turn, discovered themselves on the dancefloor. The film asks: Why does disco matter and, in these divisive times, why does disco matter now more than ever?  Featuring interviews and performances by Nile Rodgers and Chic, Billy Porter, Nona Hendryx and LaBelle, Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy, Nicky Siano, Earl Young and The Trammps, Jellybean Benitez, Kevin Saunderson, Sylvester and Martha Wash and many others. Never has a film really got as anthropological when looking at a slice of music culture and that's what makes 'Disco's Revenge' so damn special. With sit down with writer/direcfor's Omar Majeed and Peter Mishara to get deep into the groove of it all.'Disco's Revenge' is on all VOD platforms.

This week Johnny C has a special guest from his early days at NYU and the New York City theater. Eric Bogosian is one of the most prolific actors/playwrights today. You may have seen him recently on Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire.   Eric Bogosian was born in Boston and grew up in Woburn, Massachusetts. After graduating from Woburn Memorial High School in 1971, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated from Oberlin College in 1976, whereupon he moved to New York City. In New York he was hired by the Kitchen as an assistant, established a dance series there and after five years left to devote all his energies to his theater work. Between 1976 and 1982, Bogosian wrote, directed and/or starred in over sixteen productions Off-Off-Broadway. In 1982, he toured the Midwest with Fab Five Freddy and the Rock Steady Crew.   In the early 1980's Eric Bogosian became well-known in New York for his intense one-man theater pieces, winning the Obie Award three times as well as the Drama Desk Award. In 1983, after attending one of his one-man shows, Larry Cohen cast Bogosian as the homicidal director in his low-budget film Special Effects (1984). Four years later, Bogosian's Pulitzer-nominated play, (in which he also starred), "Talk Radio" caught the attention of the greater film world. Robert Altman cast Bogosian in his film of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1988) while producer Edward R. Pressman obtained the rights to the play and brought it to director Oliver Stone. Stone and Bogosian adapted the play script to film script, Bogosian again played the lead and the film of Talk Radio (1988) opened in December 1988. Bogosian received the prestigious "Silver Bear" at the 1989 Berlin Festival for his work on the film.   After the release of "Talk Radio", Bogosian worked regularly as an actor in film and television while remaining very active in the theater. 1994 was a banner year in which Bogosian co-starred with Steven Seagal in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) as the diabolical "Travis Dane", was featured in Dolores Claiborne (1995), staged another one-man show Off-Broadway and authored the play, "subUrbia" directed by Robert Falls and produced by Lincoln Center Theater, ("subUrbia" was adapted for film by director Richard Linklater). Around this time, Bogosian would also cameo appearances in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry (1997), Atom Egoyan's Ararat (2002), Cindy Sherman's Office Killer (1997) and Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996).   In the 1990's Bogosian continued to write for film and TV, adapting his own work as well as receiving assignments from studios. He began to write for television when he was invited to co-create a show for Steven Spielberg: High Incident (1996) in 1996. As an actor, in 2003, he co-starred with Val Kilmer as the notorious Eddie Nash in James Cox's Wonderland (2003). In 2006 he was invited onboard Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) as Captain Danny Ross (where he appeared in over sixty episodes).   In 2010, Bogosian starred on Broadway in Donald Margulies' "Time Stands Still" with Laura Linney, Brian d'Arcy James, Alicia Silverstone and Christina Ricci.   In 2013, Bogosian created a website featuring his numerous monologues performed by notable actors. Visit 100monologues.com to view the complete catalog of over 75 monologues.   More recently, Bogosian landed a series of featured television roles on Netflix's The Get Down (2016), Showtime's Billions (2016) and as Senator Gil Eavis on HBO's Succession (2018).   Bogosian has been featured in Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems (2019) (starring Adam Sandler).   In addition to his numerous plays, Bogosian is the author of three novels "Mall", "Wasted Beauty" and "Perforated Heart." His non-fiction history, Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot that Avenged the Armenian Genocide was published by Little, Brown in 2015.   He lives in New York City with his wife, director Jo Bonney with whom he has two children; Travis Bogosian and Harry Bogosian Produced by John C McGinleye and Angie Quidim  Copyright TME Productions 2023-2024 all rights reserved  May not be used without permission.  Contact connectivetissuejcm@gmail.com

Adler recently donated his enormous treasure trove of hip-hop related artifacts to Cornell University, of which has become digitized and is available online for public use. We used some of the materials found there to talk about everything from the film Wild Style, rap pioneers like Busy Bee, Fab Five Freddy, the Funky 4+1, the massive career of LL Cool J to even the controversy over the presence of anti-semitism in the Public Enemy organization and how it touched Adler personally. It's an experiment in bridge building with an institution historically known for overt commodification. It's a vehicle for appreciating art based on intrinsic aesthetic value. Visuel © Le bien, le mal de Guru et Mc Solaar See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the same way that a forest fire creates space for biodiversity, we as a community have the opportunity to intentionally reinvent our shared culture, on and off the playa.https://burningman.org/culture/diversity-radical-inclusion/LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

The first rapper to have a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 was not Vanilla Ice, or MC Hammer, but Debbie Harry from the band Blondie. On this episode, we talk about how the song 'Rapture' helped fuse two parallel music scenes in New York City, and how Fab Five Freddy played a key role in that merger.

It's not every day you get to go back to your old school and talk with your teachers. Today, we got that chance to speak to one of them. Doctor Dre was the only doctor I knew growing up besides Dr. Spock. Dre, along with Fab Five Freddy and Ed Lover, were instrumental in our early exposures to hip-hop. They helped educate and they definitely helped entertain us. If not for YO! MTV Raps, many of us wouldn't have even known these classic rap videos existed. There was no internet back then. Certainly nothing remotely close to Youtube. If you didn't catch Music Box, Pump It Up, Rap City or Yo!, chances are, you just missed out! While Fab Five Freddy took on the more serious role as the teacher who dropped knowledge all day, it was the fun-loving duo of Doctor Dre and Ed Lover that really captivated you. They had you laughing from the start of the class to the end of it. They left you wanting more. Doctor Dre knew how to kick dunn language, like on Knowledge Me, and he and Ed both knew how to have fun like Back Up Off Me. There has never been a team like Doctor Dre and Ed Lover and considering how the music industry is today, especially MTV, there never will be. Before mainstream TV really embraced hip-hop, before you had In Living Color, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or New York Undercover, it was YO! MTV Raps that was pivotal in the hip-hop movement in mainstream America. On this episode, we pay homage to YO! with 2 ridiculously dope DJ 360 mixes. We also speak to the great Doctor Dre. We talk about his early days at Adelphi University with Chucky D and Flavor Flav. We talk Original Concept, Def Jam and some interesting stories about Rick Rubin. We cover touring with the Beasties, how Bill Cosby did a very Bill Cosby thing when on YO!. We find out Don Cornelius felt threatened by their success. We talk about RUN-DMC not giving Dre the proper credit all the way to dropping an album on Def Jam in ‘88 along with Slick Rick and Public Enemy. We talk a lot of P.E., even Dre's love/hate relationship with Flavor Flav. We cover a lot of ground here. From Who's The Man, to who was the man behind the selections on the the soundtrack. But - what would this interview be without the amazing history and stories of YO!? We take you to the final episode, where that infamous freestyle session goes down between Rakim, Chubb Rock, Erick Sermon, MC Serch, KRS-One, Redman, Method Man, Large Professor, Special Ed and Craig Mack. We learn who Doctor Dre felt had the best verse on that iconic episode. So much and more. Don't miss our YO! MTV Raps Tribute Show featuring Doctor Dre!

The Album: Wild Style soundtrack(1983) Wild Style began as a low budget but ambitious film project, centered around Zoro, a young graffiti writer swashbuckling his way through the style wars of early ‘80s New York. Directed by Charlie Ahearn and starring Lee Quinones as Zoro, Wild Style would become more of a quasi-documentary of hip-hop’s on its cusp from South Bronx street culture into the global phenomenon we know today. Filled with MC, graffiti, DJ and b-boy performances from a host of now legends, Wild Style would inadvertently spread the hip-hop gospel to a generation of youth around the world, enraptured with how it depictions of an explosive, impossibly colorful subculture that few had laid eyes on outside of the five boroughs. Its soundtrack, overseen by Fab Five Freddy and Blondie guitarist Chris Stein, was largely built off an exclusive disc of original breakbeats that became the sound bed for various live performance scenes throughout the movie. Electric, dynamic and fly as hell, the Wild Style soundtrack helped capture the sound of early hip-hop’s energy and flair from A to motherf—ng Z. For a young Jeff Chang, growing up far away from the Bronx in Honolulu, Wild Style was like a secret cypher that he and his friends could pass around and decrypt. Long before the days of streaming video, if you didn’t catch a theatrical screening of this tiny, indie flick, you had to rely on nth generation bootleg dubs on VHS but as crappy as the images might have been, the inspiration was no less dimmed. This put Chang on the path to eventually become one of the most accomplished hip-hop critics in the formative ‘90s era, eventually culminating in his award winning Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation (2005), which, among other things, digs deep into hip-hop’s earliest days preceding even the Wild Style era. He’s since followed that up with Who We Be: The Colorization of America (2014) and most recently, We Gon’ Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation (2016) which became the inspiration behind the digital video series of the same name which just debuted this year. Conveying Basquiat’s personal magnetism, eccentricity and non-stop creativity without romanticizing him, BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT serves as another chapter in the ongoing effort to rescue the artist from his own hype. To tell this story, Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period. Drawing upon their memories and anecdotes, the film also uses period film footage, music and images  to visually evoke the era, drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City-pre AIDS, President Reagan, the real estate and art booms – before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. BOOM FOR REAL: THE LATE TEENAGE YEARS OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT follows Basquiat's life pre-fame and how New York City, the times, the people and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante and many others. Sara Driver made her directorial debut with the short film YOU ARE NOT I in 1981, which she adapted from the 1948 Paul Bowles short story of the same name. The film, named as one of the best movies of the 1980s in a Cahiers du Cinéma critics’ poll, was lost for many years until its rediscovery in 2008 among Bowles’ belongings in Tangier. Director Sara Driver joins us for engaging conversation with one of the late-twentieth century’s brightest and innovative artist.

Career-MC Sha-Rock became one of the earliest female emcee "on wax" or recorded on vinyl who began as a local b-girl or breakdancer in the earliest days of South Bronx hip-hop scene and culture in the late 1970s.[2] She recorded with the Funky 4 + 1, which consisted of four male emcees + 1, the plus one denoted Green as the sole female emcee.[3] The Funky 4 + 1 had their first significant hit with the 12-inch single "Rapping and Rocking the House" on Sugarhill Records (1979) as well as "That's the Joint" (1980).[4] As an early pioneer affiliated with the Zulu Nation, MC Sha-Rock inspired a style of rapping emulated and made notable by Run DMC called the "echo chamber".[5][6]In 2010, Green published a book about her experiences titled The Story of the Beginning and End of the First Hip Hop Female MC: Luminary Icon Sha-Rock.[7]Legacy-The early roots of girls and women in hip-hop are often downplayed but Sharon Green aka MC Sha-Rock is considered the first to record and the first to appear on national television.[8][9] On Valentine's Day in 1981, she and her crew The Funky 4 + 1 were introduced as "street rappers" from the Bronx as the musical guests along with Debbie Harry of the American group Blondie on Saturday Night Live when Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscapo were still members of the SNL cast.[8] The Funky 4+ 1's appearance reflected a local New York City connection that introduced the uptown musical youth of the Bronx and Harlem to the downtown Lower East Side scenes of graffiti art and music fictionally represented with the artists playing themselves in the 1983 film Wild Style by Charlie Ahearn. This creative link between various youthful artists was forged by the influencers like Fab Five Freddy and Ruza Kool Lady Blue who ran the Roxy NYC nightclub the featured early hip-hop artists.[10][11] She appeared in classic hip-hop films like Stan Latham's Beat Street (1984) and has been honored in recent decades by various organizations for her pioneering contributions to hip-hop emceeing.[2] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week the Two Guys with PhDs are rappin' to the beat with two new books that will funk you up. That's right, DJ D and Kunka Kool spend this episode getting down with Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen III: Century (Top Shelf/Knockabout) and Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree 2 (Fantagraphics). First, they look at the latest hardbound collection from Moore and O'Neill, bringing together all three of their previously published Century installments: 1910, 1969, and 2009. The guys spend a good deal of time discussing the kind of readers that come to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, what their expectations might be, and how some may not be ideal for Moore's kind of writing. Can those unfamiliar with the previous League stories truly comprehend what's going on in Century? Can readers unfamiliar with — or uninterested in — literary and pop-cultural marginalia come away from the book with an understanding of what Moore is attempting to do? These are some of the questions Andy and Derek discuss, and they recommend that it wouldn't be a bad idea for readers to come to Century with annotations readily at hand. (Two great online sources for these are Jess Nevin's annotations website as well as postings by the Mindless Ones.) Next, the guys discuss Ed Piskor's latest volume of Hip Hop Family Tree. This second book covers the scene from 1981-1983, and it picks up right where last year's first volume left off. Among other highlights, the guys talk about Piskor's take on Sylvia Robinson and Sugar Hill Records, the evolution of Run-DMC, the resistance of many rappers to put their efforts on vinyl, the significance of Charlie Ahearn's film Wild Style, and the role Fab Five Freddy played in bringing together uptown and downtown cultures. They specifically focus on Piskor's art and the way he tells his story. Hip Hop Family Tree is a series of anecdotes and ongoing storylines, first published on Boing Boing, that may appear fragmented at first, but a careful reading reveals an interconnectedness that makes for an engaging history. And the way that Piskor represents key players in early hip hop culture  (e.g., Afrika Bambbataa, Melle Mel, Russell Simmons, Mr. Magic, Lonzo Williams, and Rick Rubin) is both revealing and humorous. Whether or not you're a fan of hip hop — Andy is, Derek really isn't — Hip Hop Family Tree is a series you definitely have to check out.
