Marcos Torres, originally from Venezuela, moved to the United States 17 years ago to pursue new opportunities. His initial plan to become an investment banker was derailed by the 2008 financial crisis, but his ability to adapt ultimately led him to becoming the CFO of Huntress, a successful cybersecurity company.  Marcos shares his story of adaptability–recognizing and pursuing abundance in various forms, not just financial wealth. He talks about clarity of vision and action, resilience in the face of challenges, and the concept of “failing differently”. More about Marcos Torres: Marcos Torres is the CFO at Huntress. Since joining in 2019, he has been building the Finance and Ops team to support the company in its multiple waves of growth and preparing for a future IPO. Before joining Huntress, Marcos was VP of Finance at Nava PBC and held key roles at Pendrell Corporation, a publicly-traded Intellectual Property Investment Company focused on technology portfolios, and Edgenuity, a KKR SaaS portfolio company in partnership with WeldNorth Education, focused on EdTech. Are you on the defense or offense when it comes to YOU and your life? I'm here to unveil what it takes to create a strong pit crew that will help you get back up! Many of us are living in a defensive mode and only react and ask for help when we're in the hole and need help. What if we chose to live in the offensive mode and choose help even when we're not in the hole? I wonder what can be creative if more of us chose to live like this. Five years ago I got the Epstein-Barr Virus and was down for the count for three months. I was unable to work and function. I was completely on the defensive mode at this time. This virus taught me how to choose for me even when I'm feeling great!  In this podcast I share with you who is currently on my pit crew. I see and speak to everyone in my pit crew at least once a month ( even when I'm feeling amazing ). These are the people who help “put me back together” when I'm in the hole just like a pit crew would during the Indy 500 when a race car is ready for maintenance. WHO's in YOUR PIT CREW? This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, Feb. 7th. For our Cedar Rapids area weather today, according to the National Weather Service, we can expect a chance of flurries after 7 a.m. It will be a partly sunny day, with a high near 22. Wind chill values could be as low as -10. Winds from the northwest 5 to 10 mph, then coming from the south in the afternoon. For tonight, a chance of flurries before 7 p.m., and partly cloudy, with a low around 13. The Cedar Rapids Virtual Academy will no longer offer live, daily instruction from district teachers next school year. Instead, virtual learning will be offered to kindergarten though eighth-graders next fall through Edgenuity, a nationally accredited online provider. The district announced the switch — beginning in the 2022-23 school year — in a newsletter to families on Friday. The online classes are offered to families who want a virtual alternative instead of sending their children to in-person classes. Students now enrolled in the Cedar Rapids Virtual Academy have daily, live, online instruction with a district teacher and some independent work. The Friday newsletter did not say how online instruction will be offered to high school students next school year, and district officials could not be reached for comment. Large landowners in Linn County who are looking this spring to replant trees lost in the 2020 derecho will benefit from the next phase of Marion-based not-for-profit Monarch Research's Planting Forward reforestation initiative. Monarch Research is offering large private landowners easy access to native Iowa trees to be planted this spring in the 2022 Planting Forward for Woodlands project. Interested landowners have from now until Feb. 18 to order trees at the organization's website, monarchresearch.org, to meet spring planting timelines. This project is intended for private landowners who lost more than 25 trees during the Aug. 10, 2020, derecho. Monarch Research has earmarked a limited number of trees for these landowners or those with 3 or more woodland acres. Support for this podcast provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. How did the COVID pandemic affect student success and/or participation in the summer courses? Who worked to develop these courses?  How effective were these courses?  Did you see a higher percentage of recovery in students in TCAPS built courses compared to other courses? Vice versa?  Can you talk about the variety of courses? Which courses were more difficult to implement with a technology-mediated experience? Did students prefer these over other available courses? (Edgenuity, etc.) How would you view the success of the summer? What needs to be different or be repeated? What important insights did you gain from last summer's experience? Thanks for listening and inspiring.

Q. Tell us a little bit about what’s going on at Brenham Junior High School. A. Our theme this year is “One Small Step Today…One Giant Leap Tomorrow!” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Thanks to our staff, students, and parents, we’ve had an amazing start to the year. We appreciate the effort our students are making to follow the rules by being in dress code, wearing IDs, and being wonderful students! We also appreciate the support of our Bush’s Chicken fundraiser which raised $14,783 for field trips and other student activities. Q. What are your goals as you enter your sixth year at Brenham Junior High School? A. I strive to create a team environment at BJHS so our staff and students are excited about what we are doing as a campus. I want our students to regard the time they spent with us as the best educational experience they have ever had. I also want to ensure our students are being educated in a safe, positive, loving environment, and that they are prepared not only for success on state assessments but also for the academic rigor of high school and college. Q. What programs are in place at BJHS to assist students? A. We recently had the first Saturday school of the year for students having attendance issues or academic issues. We will offer two Saturday schools per month until the end of the school year. We have also been using Edgenuity, an online program to address the four core disciplines. Additionally, we use Reading Plus as a tool for reading improvement. We also plan to bring in some of our AVID students to help the Saturday school students with binder and agenda organization. Q. Tell us about the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. AVID is in its third year on our campus, and we base everything we do on the four domains of AVID: Systems, Instruction, Leadership, and Culture. We are an AVID certified campus and our goal is to become an elite AVID National Demonstration School. All BJHS students have an organized binder and agenda, and every department works on having focused note-taking in their classes. As a campus, we have two seventh grade AVID elective classes and two eighth grade AVID elective classes, but all of our students know that AVID reaches into EVERY classroom and impacts them academically. Our AVID elective teacher Jenny Schaer continues to push our AVID students to achieve the highest goals! Q. What upcoming events do you have occurring at BJH? A. We have a “pink out” themed pep rally on October 21 at 2:30 p.m. in our gym with a girls vs. boys competition. The Brenham High School band will also be joining us for this pep rally. Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 21-25, and we will also be wearing orange in support of Unity Day on October 23 for bullying prevention. Football, volleyball and cross country are all well into their seasons and basketball will be starting the next few weeks.
