For as long as Danielle can remember, she has always wanted to be an educator. Danielle's love for learning and sharing with others is a lifelong passion and crusade to which she devotes her heart and soul. Within her career path as an educator, she has engaged and inspired others as a Teacher, Learning Coach, Assessment and Data Consultant, Vice Principal, and now Principal. Her favorite and most important role, however, is as a mom. Born in Chemainus, British Columbia, and raised in Saskatchewan with her family, her roots are here, in the Land of the Living Skies. The art of sharing stories comes from her grandfather and father, who instilled in her a love of the art of communication and making connections with all you meet. Through these experiences, stories, and the love of learning and educating, the idea of creating a collection of stories, problems, and most importantly solutions, emerged. Danielle is the author of a book titled “Healing in the Halls: a reflection of the pandemic and its impact on schools education and families”. It's a poignant and timely exploration of the profound changes brought by the covid-19 pandemic in the realm of Education. It's also a thought-provoking book because it dives into the heart of the crisis, shedding light on how schools, educators, students, and families navigated unprecedented challenges.Show Notes:In this episode, Danielle, an educator with a long-standing passion for learning and sharing, discusses her journey throughout various roles in education, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. She highlights the challenges faced by students, families, and educators, and the emotional toll the pandemic took on everyone involved.Danielle shares insights from her book "Healing in the Halls," which reflects on the pandemic's impact on schools and explores solutions for moving forward. She emphasizes the importance of acknowledging trauma, understanding community needs, and leveraging newfound technological skills and community bonds to foster an inclusive and supportive educational environment. The episode concludes with Danielle sharing advice for educational leaders on supporting and empowering their communities. Book Marks:00:00 Introduction to Danielle's Journey00:53 The Impact of the Pandemic on Education02:34 Navigating the Challenges of Online Learning04:36 Adapting to New Roles and Environments08:45 Emotional and Community Support11:46 Reflecting on the Lessons Learned15:40 Future Directions and Healing25:22 Personal Insights and Advice30:17 Conclusion and Contact Information Want the Transcripts? Matt is disrupting the way we think about education and inviting dads to take a strategic approach to the future men they are raising.    Connect with Matt: Matt Barnes on Linked In theeducationgame.com    Extended Notes: Most of our problems stem from how we think, which comes from how we're educated There's been an inversion of the primary place of education, from the home to the institution of schooling The institution of school is designed to encourage finding the right answers and regurgitating them Truth lies within the family; it is not up to the institution to define truth for kids; the key question is who decides what truth is? Media is the greatest influence in kids today; dads need to engage with that media and disrupt the messages kids are receiving; invite kids into a conversation about the message and the messenger Preparing self-leaders will allow them to learn their way out of any situation Matt's Key Question: Who is the child you want to give to the world? Noticing and working with your child's interest allows you to build a learning journey with them, for their own self learning and discovery The school room is uniquely designed to frustrate boys; Dads must engage early and often as the strategist for their son's life

In this episode of THE Journal Insider podcast, editor Kristal Kuykendall visits with several K–12 educators, instructional coaches, and education technology specialists who participated in the Apple Learning Coach pilot program last year before it was launched publicly this past March. Apple Learning Coach has just opened up applications for its fourth cohort, and any U.S. educator with the capacity to coach K–12 teachers can apply through Nov. 16, 2022, or learn more at Apple.co/alc-apply.   This episode's guests share deep insights and inspiring stories about how the Apple Learning Coach program has been a change agent at their schools: from helping spark new enthusiasm among students and teachers, and improving the frameworks of existing teacher coaching programs, to building technology-powered instruction that dramatically increases student engagement, creation, and collaboration.   Maranda Ralph and Jessica Keller from Berkeley County School District in West Virginia start off this episode sharing how they, as coaches and technology integration specialists, benefitted from Apple Learning Coach and the evidence of its impact they've seen as the coaching methods and the iPad apps they learned about during the ALC program have trickled down into classrooms and throughout their district's teaching staff.   Next you'll hear the director of educational technology at the Los Lunas, New Mexico, school district, Bill Hays, explain how his participation in the ALC pilot program led to the creation of a student film festival that has been a huge hit with students and the community.   THE Journal Insider podcast explores current ed tech trends and issues impacting K–12 educators, IT professionals, instructional technologists, education leaders, and ed tech providers. Listen in as THE Journal Editor Kristal Kuykendall chats with ed tech experts, educators, and industry leaders about how they are 'meeting the moment' in the U.S. public education system.
