This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, September 6. According to the National Weather Service there could be some fog to start your morning commute on Tuesday, but most of it should clear out by 9 a.m. After that cloudy skies will eventually become sunny in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 81 degrees. The low is predicted to settle in at 60 degrees, with partly cloudy skies. Local governments in Johnson County want to make the Iowa River a signature attraction for residents and visitors. With the help of Think Iowa City, the cities of Coralville and Iowa City, along with Johnson County, are preparing a nearly $6 million application to the state's Destination Iowa program that will be submitted in the coming weeks. The joint application seeks funding for various projects improving water and trail access in the county. This includes a new park in Coralville with various amenities, a skatepark renovation in Iowa City, new boat ramps, and completing the Clear Creek Trail connection https://www.thegazette.com/local-government/campground-improvements-coming-to-growing-kent-park/ (out to Kent Park). The application is part of a long-term plan to develop features to make the river easier to use from the Coralville Reservoir dam all the way down south to Hills and Riverside. That includes improving the trail system, adding more boat ramps so people can easily get on the water and planning other attractions along the river. Navigating North Liberty will get more cumbersome once the University of Iowa completes its half-billion-dollar hospital project, according to a traffic study the university commissioned to determine what measures it should take to help mitigate congestion in the booming district. The study, which Shive-Hattery Architecture and Engineering produced in May, analyzed 20 intersections near Highway 965 and Forevergreen Road, where UI Health Care is building its $525.6 million campus. The firm recommended the addition of either traffic signals, more lanes or new restrictive signage at eight intersections to keep driving from devolving into unacceptable delays. The analysis suggests dual turn lanes and a traffic signal off Forevergreen Road and a single turn lane off Wheaton Road — both of which UIHC would pay for.

In today's episode, Psychiatrist Dr. Adam Woods is back for Part 2 of his five steps to well-being. During this episode, we cover steps #2 through #5 and dive into each step in detail. Dr. Adam provides many excellent resources for listeners to dive further into each step. He breaks these steps down and truly makes them feel achievable for anyone! Dr. Adam also discusses the pros and cons of medication for mental health needs and how his 5-steps can work alongside prescribed medication. Tune in today to learn more about how to shift your life through Therapy, Sleep, Exercise, Diet, and Meditation. In this episode: [0:52] Step 2: How sleep impacts your well-being. [3:28] Step 3: Keep your body active - what forms of “exercise” count. [5:30] Step 4: Good diet - eating less processed foods and the truths behind diets. [9:47] Step 5: Meditation and the different types available. [19:45] Wrapping up the five things to well-being and how they work together. [22:18] Breathing tips, how to breathe for anxiety. [24:25] How they all work together: Medication, Changing Lifestyle, and Anxiety. [32:15] The Rent Project. Key Takeaways: Our bodies do not know the difference between hardcore exercise and daily activities. Our ancestors did not do intentional workouts. They were just more active, which is what we need. Play with your kids, go for a walk, choose something you enjoy and move your body. Meditation can look different for everyone. For some people, it is sitting down and meditating; for others, it is doing a focused sport such as running, rock climbing, or another intense sport where an activity occupies the mind. No headphones in; just allow your mind to focus. So many of our health issues are tied to the amount of processed food we consume. Instead of following a specific diet, focus on eating closer to plants, whole foods, and things that give you energy. Health issues like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease didn't start until after WWII, when more heavily processed foods were introduced. Quotes: “If I could change nothing else about your picture except making you sleep better, you will get better. Now how much better I can't say, but I can promise you you will get better.” - Dr. Adam Woods “Why is meditation so powerful? #1 is when you think about it, meditation is therapy with yourself. The second big reason about meditation is that people's sleep tends to improve dramatically.” - Dr. Adam Woods “The point is not to clear your mind; the point is to accept your mind for how it is.” - Dr. Adam Woods Guest Bio: Dr. Adam Woods is a "Family Psychiatrist" (a term of his own invention, meaning he sees both children and adults) who practices in North Liberty, Iowa. Adam got a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and served as a Presbyterian Chaplain in the United States Air Force. During his time in the military, Adam fell in love with medicine, ultimately deciding to leave the Air Force and attend the prestigious Duke University School of Medicine, where he got his MD in 2012. Adam decided to return to Iowa and do his Psychiatry Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In today's episode, we are joined by Psychiatrist Dr. Adam Woods to discuss the five steps to well-being. In this two-part episode, we learn about Dr. Adam's background and how he came to be a Psychiatrist. We discuss the importance of adding self-care to a routine, especially amid a divorce, loss, or a significant life change. During this episode, we focus on step 1 of his 5 step process, which is Therapy. Tune in today to learn more about how medicine is only a small portion of working through trauma and tips for finding the right therapist for you. In this episode: [3:40] Dr. Adam Woods's journey and story of how he became a psychiatrist. [17:25] What are the five steps of well-being? [21:22] Why Dr. Adam approaches treatment with wellbeing, not just medication. [24:37] The number one thing to help with well-being: Therapy. Key Takeaways: Medication is a tool that can be used to help through a difficult time, but it is not the only tool to use. Self-care and the five steps Dr. Adam goes through are necessary for healing. When we are not feeling well, mentally or physically, it is our body trying to talk to us. Don't just numb yourself; listen to what your body is telling you and work through the feelings. Therapy is different for every person, sometimes, it only takes a couple of sessions, and sometimes it takes years to work through what your mind needs. If therapy doesn't seem to be working, seek out another therapist. Quotes: “I tell people when they are in the process of divorce, or they've lost a job or a loved one has died, it's very much the same kind of loss. If you look at the physiological literature it's identical.” -Dr. Adam Woods “We forget in the midst of a crisis to do normal things to take care of ourselves, and here is the problem: our body can't talk to us, so all it can do is make us feel bad. When our body makes us feel bad, it hopes we'll pay attention.” -Dr. Adam Woods Guest Bio: Dr. Adam Woods is a "Family Psychiatrist" (a term of his own invention, meaning he sees both children and adults) who practices in North Liberty, Iowa. Touting a somewhat unusual resume, Adam attended Drake University for undergraduate school and obtained his BFA in Acting & Playwriting before embarking on a career as a professional actor and singer in various venues all over the world. After deciding the world of theater was an avocation and not a vocation, Adam got a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and served as a Presbyterian Chaplain in the United States Air Force. During his time in the military, Adam found himself doing hospital chaplain work and absolutely fell in love with medicine, ultimately deciding to leave the Air Force and attend the prestigious Duke University School of Medicine, where he got his MD in 2012. A proud Iowa native with deep family roots, Adam decided to return to his home State and do his Psychiatry Residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Adam currently lives in Coralville, Iowa with his wife, Laurie, and their 6 year old daughter, Mackenzie. Tuesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 59 degrees. The wind will remain calm all day. City High School in Iowa City will honor a 17-year employee and “wonderful human being” who https://www.thegazette.com/news/coralville-man-dies-while-trying-to-save-child-in-iowa-river/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot&fbclid=IwAR1f01YQ3X8yP3OCBdTIvl9rqgDCJuXRjUUNVHO9-i1Kn0JZPo-RF1WNg-k (drowned Friday while trying to save a child from the Iowa River) in southern Johnson County. 42-year-old Wegayewu Faris,, had been a custodian at City High since 2005, according to Principal John Bacon. The school will honor him with a plaque highlighting his story. Faris was fishing Friday in the Iowa River at River Junction Access near Lone Tree when an 8-year-old boy, who was not related to Faris but was also fishing with family, went into the river and began struggling. Faris entered the river to try to save the child. With the help of Faris and a nearby kayaker, the boy got safely out of the water, but Faris became submerged. His body was found by law enforcement an hour later. A major part of Coralville's Fifth Street — an area described as the city's “civic center” — will be getting a $5 million upgrade starting next year. The portion of Fifth Street to be reconstructed starts at 12th Avenue and goes through the 20th Avenue intersection. The 12th Avenue intersection will not be impacted. The “total reconstruction” includes tearing out the pavement and replacing the sidewalks, as well as new water main and storm sewer. New trees, lighting and landscaping also will be added. Fifth Street will remain two lanes, but an 8-foot shared-use path will be added along the north side of the street out to 20th Avenue. Work is planned to be done in phases starting in the spring and continue over the next couple of years. According to the Associated Press, the FBI searched Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate as part of an investigation into whether he took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence, people familiar with the matter said Monday. Even if it doesn't lead to a trial, a search of a former president's home is unprecedented. Trump, disclosing the search in a lengthy statement, asserted that agents had opened up a safe at his home and described their work as an “unannounced raid” that he likened to “prosecutorial misconduct.” The search intensifies the months-long probe into how classified documents ended up in more than a dozen boxes located at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year. It occurs amid a separate https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-presidential-elections-election-2020-subpoenas-54fcade9ac0e15faf544b615f8f45902 (grand jury investigation) into Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, August 8th. Today in the Cedar Rapids area, according to the National Weather Service, we'll have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. It should be a partly sunny day, with a high near 80. And winds from the north, 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Then tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 61. Authorities said a Coralville man drowned Friday evening while helping efforts to rescue an 8-year-old child who was struggling in the currents of the Iowa River near Lone Tree. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office reported a call came in shortly after 6 p.m. about a possible drowning at River Junction Access in southern Johnson County. Authorities said the child entered the river and began to struggle, so the man went in to help save him. But the man submerged, and a passing kayaker and another person tried to find him but could not. The kayaker rescued the child from the water. Bystanders performed CPR and the child was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The body of 42-year-old Wegayewu Faris was found about 7:10 p.m. Authorities said he is not related to the child, but like the child he had come with others to fish at the river. The sheriff's office said Faris and the bystander were instrumental in saving the child's life. A woman was seriously injured by multiple gunshots in an alley outside an Iowa City bar early Sunday, according to an Iowa City Police Department news release. At 2:24 a.m., police responded to the H-Bar, at 220 S. Van Buren St., for a report of multiple shots fired and found the woman in the adjacent alley with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigating officers determined multiple people were in the alley when the shots were fired. The woman was treated on scene by emergency medical responders and transported to a hospital for serious injuries. Iowa City police said the suspected shooter was last seen fleeing the area in a vehicle. They are asking the public for assistance by sharing any related information or security camera footage. –

There is something powerful about singing.  We are creatures that need to and love to be around music and participate in it at some level.  Singing has the power to unite us, to comfort us and to combat demon oppression.  Our praise and worship to God is not based on our feelings, emotions or our circumstances, we praise and we sing in response to what God is doing and to who He is. It's time for us as the body of Christ to grow in this, that we might be known as a church that expresses its love to the Lord boastfully and loudly in song. This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, July 18th. According to the National Weather Service, it will be sunny today in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 89. Then tonight, mostly clear, with a low around 68. Two police officers who wrongly arrested a Coralville man for being an impaired driver without any evidence and locking him up in jail for nearly three months didn't lose their jobs or face any consequences that were made public. Former Iowa City Officer Travis Graves resigned from the department on Oct. 15, 2018, and was hired four days later as a conservation officer with Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and former Coralville Officer Jeff Reinhard resigned and became an Iowa City officer in April 2019, according to both departments. Both were hired for their new positions after the wrongful charge against Anthony Watson was dismissed April 9, 2018, but before a lawsuit by Watson was filed in September 2019. The Iowa City and Coralville city councils approved a $390,000 payout to settle the lawsuit from Watson, which accused the cities and Graves and Reinhard of negligence resulting in personal injury, false arrest, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and malicious prosecution. Typically, when civil settlements are reached before trial, the defendants don't admit to any guilt or wrongdoing — it is rather a compromise of a disputed claim. –

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, July 6. Wednesday's weather will follow a similar pattern to Tuesday's but it will be cloudy and cooler, with less potential for serious storms. According to the National Weather Service it will be cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 88 degrees. There will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. and a 50 percent chance later on Wednesday night. The low will be around 72 degrees. A Coralville police officer, one of those responding to a call about a 3-year-year-old being shot Sunday, later died from an acute medical emergency, according to a Facebook post from the Coralville Police Department. “We are reeling from both of these incidents,” Coralville Mayor Meghann Foster said in an interview with the Gazette on Tuesday. “The loss of this young child in our community, and the loss of this officer who served for over two decades and was known for his kindness.” https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/3-year-old-coralville-child-dies-after-suffering-gunshot-related-injury/ (Damari Sanders), a 3-year-old boy, was critically injured Sunday in Coralville after suffering a gunshot wound. The child died later that evening at the hospital. Investigators have not yet released any details on why and how the child was shot. Sgt. John Williams, who had been with the Coralville Police Department for over 28 years, died from a medical emergency “in the aftermath” of responding to the shooting, according to the Facebook post. But his death was not directly related to Damari's death, according to Coralville City Administrator Kelly Hayworth. New legal standards for potential abortion restrictions in Iowa must be argued first in front of a lower court judge, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled Tuesday in rejecting a request from the governor. The court denied Gov. Kim Reynolds' request to rehear a case involving a state law that requires a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can have an abortion. Reynolds had requested the high court rehear it so that justices could rule on what legal standard would be applied to future abortion regulations in the state. That district court judge's ruling is likely to be appealed, and the case likely will return to the Iowa Supreme Court anyway, said legal expert Sally Frank, a law professor at Drake University. Frank said the courts eventually will be asked to rule what type of legal standards should be applied to future abortion regulations. Frank said what kind of abortion restriction or ban statehouse Republicans propose afterward likely will depend on which standard the state courts apply. While dozens were treated at Eastern Iowa hospitals over the weekend for fireworks-related injuries, this year's holiday brought fewer emergency incidents than previous years, local providers say. UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids saw two fireworks-related injuries over the holiday weekend, but none were severe. By comparison, the emergency room reported five injuries at the same time last year. Mercy Medical Center, also in Cedar Rapids, reported one firework injury over the holiday, and it was not severe. Last year, the hospital also reported one injury. This drop is a welcome trend that may show Iowans are getting more used to legal fireworks, in contrast to a spike of injuries five years ago. A study from UIHC researchers found Iowa's two largest trauma centers saw https://www.thegazette.com/news/study-firework-injuries-in-iowa-spike-post-legalization/ (fireworks-related injuries more than double )in the two-year period after the Iowa Legislature legalized the sale of fireworks in May 2017. In addition, the severity of injuries increased, with injuries to children nearly tripling, according to the study.

In a plant's life cycle, producing fruit is the last phase, while developing a root system comes first and is essential to producing fruit. How many times have we worked to change our eating habits or gone to the gym to get into better shape, but soon reverted back to our old ways? Or how many times have we worked to be more like Jesus in our workplace or in our home but found that we weren't able to keep it up? Do we just need more willpower or discipline, or is the issue deeper? In Ephesians 3, the Apostle Paul challenges us to root ourselves in the love of God and let the fruit speak for itself. We cannot give what we don't have, and the focus of followers of Jesus needs to be roots before fruit! Join us live in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, or Wilton, Iowa. Or watch online each Sunday morning. Pride can be defined as a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.   Pride is a pain. While we are often affected by it, we may not be aware of it or how it is showing up in our life. Why is that? Where is pride affecting your life? How do you address it? Pride is often the true reason why we get our feelings hurt, why we feel rejection, why we won't admit our mistakes, why we want to be seen with certain people, and why we stay angry. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Raygun IPA from Backpocket Brewing in Coralville, IA. She talks about the highlights of her weekend in Iowa City, Des Moines, and Kansas City including meeting Justin Bieber's Tour Manager at the hotel in Des Moines and shopping at her favorite Raygun store. She then reviews her Kansas City Sunday lunch at the downtown Arthur Bryant's location in Kansas City.“GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Better Made's Special Salt & Vinegar chips, which she rates a B+ and loves the vinegar content. She moves on to try Hidden Valley Ranch Secret Sauce, which is sweet and tangy, and she thinks would be fantastic on chicken fingers. She finishes her tasting with Iowa's own Brown Dog's Farm Habanero Peach hot sauce, which scorches her mouth and makes her laugh out loud. QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen read an article where Queen Stevie Nicks announces that the person with whom is her “favorite person to sing with” is Natalie Maines from The Chicks (The Dixie Chicks). The two artists first crossed in 2002 when The Chicks covered Fleetwood Mac's ‘Landslide', and they eventually had the chance to perform it together, which was an unforgettable moment for Nicks.UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the oldest person in the world, and the status of Anna Delvey's deportation fight.“HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery of a 1,500-year-old knife once owned by a Norwegian reindeer hunter, and a 12,500-year-old sphinx in Pakistan. KINDERGARTEN HAPPY HOUR: Kathleen laughs out loud when reading an article about a Michigan Kindergarten class who accidentally consumed tequila during snack time. One of the kids brought a bottle of ready-to-drink Jose Cuervo margaritas in her backpack, and several students drank it. One kindergartner "felt woozy" and a "little dizzy" after having four or five sips from a Dixie cup, which prompted the teachers to investigate.CNN PLUS FOLDS AFTER ONE MONTH: Kathleen can't believe it when she reads an announcement that CNN's news app CNN Plus is folding after only 1 month of activity. CNN+ was launched on 29 March in an attempt to bring in revenues from news streaming subscriptions, and even though the company spent as much as $300m on developing the service it got off to a slow start, attracting just 10,000 viewers a day, according to reports.Kathleen reads the list of contributors from news reporters to celebrity chefs, stating that the only “food” show that she watches religiously is Trisha Yearwood's “Trisha's Southern Kitchen.” NETFLIX STOCK PLUNGES AFTER SUBSCRIBER PURGE: Kathleen laughs when reading an article advising that Netflix stock has plunged 35% after announcing that password sharing on accounts was no longer going to be tolerated. She wonders aloud that “didn't they KNOW we were sharing accounts?” Netflix said it expected to lose two million global subscribers in the current quarter.ELON BUYS TWITTER AND PLANS TO COLONIZE MARS: Kathleen is fascinated by Elon Musk's business moves, and is thrilled to read that he has successfully become the majority shareholder of Twitter. With some of his remaining riches, he's planning to colonize Mars, warning that life on that planet will be dangerous, cramped, and difficult. MEET THE WORLD'S OLDEST DOG: Kathleen is amused to read that the world's oldest living dog is a chihuahua named Toby Keith. TIKTOK CHILDREN VS DOLLAR GENERAL: Kathleen applauds reading an article about a Dollar General manager named Mary who created a viral video detailing the difficulties involved in running one of their stores.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “Basquait” on Amazon Prime.
