SIDE HUSTLE III: C IS FOR COSTNER, GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME: UNTOUCHABLES AND THE POSTMAN Kevin Costner had a special run of films in the 80s and 90s. If you weren't there, trust us! He did. He turned small roles into leading roles and used all of the cachet to make Dances With Wolves, which grew so out of hand that trades referred to it as Kevin's Gate. It made a gajillion dollars and won all the Oscars so he showed them! His peculiar mix of straight-forward American decency and rascally antiauthoritarian streak made him truly unique as a baby boomer superstar and then as an Oscar-winning director. We start this week's episode with fave guest Erik, of the Blood & Popcorn podcast, to talk 1987's UNTOUCHABLES, directed by Brian DePalma from a script by David Mamet. Costner's breakthrough as Elliott Ness. Erik also takes us through a little of Costner's renaissance withYellowstone along with his latest passion project as star-director, HORIZON. Which began life as a single movie and now may be... FOUR? Costner has never shied away from ambition, even when it lays him low. Speaking of... with a shelf of awards and a lifetime of "Haha I did a better movie than Goodfellas" Christmas cards addressed to Scorsese, Costner embarked on his proper follow-up as director to Dances With Wolves in 1997 when he released the 3 hour post-apocalyptic THE POSTMAN, a movie so earnest you almost feel bad for thinking it is terrible. Then years go by and you think "maybe it has aged well now that we are in a CGI IP-laden hellscape." Nope, it is still one of the mind-meltingest bad studio films to ever come out. Ever. But you know what? If not for its "your butt has fused to your couch, here is a couch toilet toilet" length, it could be one of the all time great bad movies. Some of the creative choices are so wrong one imagines Scorsese sending Costner a lifetime of Christmas cards saying "at least I didn't direct The Postman" because of it. Not shockingly, Erik taps out after the brilliant Untouchables and lets Ken and Thomas marvel at the beauty of The Postman on their lonesome. Brian DePalma directed this Prohibition Era crime epic about the eponymous Untouchables and their mission to take down Al Capone, who is ruling the city of Chicago through extreme violence. The Untouchables are lead by Elliott Ness played by Kevin Costner and Capone is played by DeNiro. However the most memorable player is Ness' right-hand and mentor, Malone played by the late great Sean Connery in the role which won him an Oscar. Andy Garcia, Billy Drago, and Charles Martin Smith fill out the very well-dressed cast. Is everything portrayed true to what really happened at this time in American history? Not in the slightest, but it's still damn entertaining! Finally got the chance to sit down and talk with my homie, Elliott Ness. Last time we recorded a podcast, my computer ate it. So I'm happy that we got to do this again. We get into what butter means to him, how his new music project is unfolding, and I also introduce him to Hovey Benjamin and I am extremely surprised that he hadn't heard Send Bobs. Hit me up on instagram @Ab1zzle for upcoming podcast announcements. Enjoy!
Two time American Book Award winning author Deirdre Bair digs deep into the notorious gangster who ruled Chicago with an iron fist in her new biography Al Capone: His Life, Legacy, and Legend. Today she’ll share how she got unprecedented access to the surviving relatives of Al Capone and how their stories passed down through the family revealed the human side of the notorious gangster. She’ll cut through some of the many myths surrounding Capone including the famous baseball bat scene and talk about the Harvard Business School case study on his illegal empire. She’ll discuss the security precautions Al Capone took and divulge where the gangster hid out when things got too hot in Chicago. She’ll dispel the legend of Elliott Ness and talk about the people who really caught Al Capone including one prominent lady lawyer in the 1920’s.
