Tread Perilously -- The Dick Van Dyke Show: Racy Tracy Rattigan

Tread Perilously settles in for a month of shows that inspired WandaVision with an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show called "Racy Tracy Rattigan". With Alan Brady out on vacation, Rob and the others must write the next two shows for guest host "Racy" Tracy Rattigan. The British actor proves to be funny and charming, but his immediate interest in Laura leaves Rob a little unnerved. It becomes full-tilt unnerved when Rattigan comes to their home under the guise of working on sketches, but ends up coming on to Laura. Will Rob's response sink Rattigan's commitment to the show? Erik returns from his own vacation with some rusty podcast skills and the wrong microphone. He and Justin get back into the swing of things via a chat about Jack Quaid and the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pair also fall in love with Mary Tyler Moore all over again. Justin learns the Morey Amsterdam joke and immediately warms to Rose Marie. Guest star Richard Dawson gets some flowers even as Erik tries to determine if Rattigan is supposed to be Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, or both. Though not on screen, Carl Reiner proves to be the MVP. But will a 1963 episode of the show turn out surprisingly modern?

So give a guy a break and rhapsodize poetic while talking about how much you love what I have to say.  Jason and I especially had a great discussion on paranoia and conspiracy in films, comparing the two versions of the Hitchcock film, and praising Dudley Moore's breakout performance.  Also check out the Rabbit Hole Podcast at https://rabbitholepodcasts.com/author/whateverjasonsoto/ It is a virtual treasure trove of goodies to listen to when it comes to pop culture.  Check out my blog at https://howardcasner.wordpress.com/  My books, More Rantings and Ravings of a Screenplay Reader, The Starving Artists and Other Stories and The Five Corporations and One True Religion can be found at https://www.amazon.com/s?k=howard+casner&ref=nb_sb_noss   Be sure to like, follow or comment on my podcast. We present our Hardbodies/10/Spring Break Review! When people think of iconic American cinema, they rarely jump straight to beachside hijinks, topless party montages, and clueless middle-aged men trying to reclaim their youth—but perhaps they should. Films like 10 (1979), Hardbodies (1984), and Spring Break (1983) are part of a uniquely 1980s phenomenon: the sex comedy boom, where the combination of sun, skin, and slapstick served as both low-budget goldmines and cultural time capsules. Though 10, starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, predates the others and leaned more into adult romantic fantasy than outright teen farce, it planted the seeds for the genre's obsession with unattainable beauty, aging masculinity, and self-aware hedonism. But it was Hardbodies that truly shifted the tone, ushering in the rise of the raunchy, youth-driven beach comedy that would define a generation of VHS rentals and late-night cable rewatches.Hardbodies wasn't the first to feature babes and bros on the sand, but it was the blueprint that codified the formula: old dudes hire a young ladies' man to teach them how to pick up women in Malibu, resulting in a series of increasingly absurd, sexualized, and tone-deaf adventures. It's pure wish fulfillment, soaked in neon tans and synth-heavy soundtracks, but it also became the prototype for films like Spring Break, Private Resort, and Hot Dog… The Movie. Its unapologetic objectification and throwaway plotting weren't accidental—they were the selling point. And for better or worse, Hardbodies helped shift sex comedy from teen coming-of-age (Porky's, Fast Times) to pure, exploitative fantasy. That shift matters, because it marked the moment when these films stopped pretending to be about growing up and started reveling in never growing up at all. The film legacy of Hardbodies isn't about quality or prestige—it's about influence, formula, and the way it captured a certain type of American escapism that filmmakers are still riffing on (or reacting against) today.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Right here, squaring off, from opposite sides of the Atlantic, we present: Dueling tag-teams of zaniness — wearing fanciful disguises, winking at traditional forms, and tweeting in a birdlike falsetto… Good stuff!BEDAZZLEDThe Faustian satire Bedazzled, created by genius comedian Peter Cook (who plays the Devil trying to bargain for souls), makes good use of the talents of his Chaplin-esque comedy partner, Dudley Moore (who you might remember from the hit films Ten and Arthur), who plays the shlumpy Wimpy Burger cook, Stanley, willing to bargain away his mortal soul for love. The team first worked together in the early 60s smash stage revue BEYOND THE FRINGE, then coalesced on the BBC as Pete and Dud, (and, later, even more darlingly in the scatalogical bootleg recordings of Derek and Clive). In 1966, with Bedazzled they were on the rise commercially, and Moore, an Oxford trained classical and jazz pianist, wrote all the music for the film.  In this cut, entitled Leaping Nuns chorus, the sisters of the Order of Saint Beryl (including Stanley in full habit) show their devotion to the Saint by jumping on trampolines. JAN AND DEAN MEET BATMANAlso in ‘66, laboring secretly on a similar track, energized by the same Goon Show type inspiration, Jan Berry and Dean Torrance were working to expand, (but not abandon) their surf sound by adding a storyline and special effects, and creating some nutty theater of the mind. Who knows where this might have led, if Jan's tragic car collision a few week's after the record's release, (resulting in his massive head injuries), hadn't sidelined the team's ambitions? Perhaps a blockbuster TV series…?There was always a comic element to the Jan and Dean performance style. (Check out the classic Rock concert film Tami Show, which they hosted). They may have looked like copper toned surf hunks, but maybe there was some Abbott and Costello lurking beneath the Golden Boy surface.

The hype around Santa Claus the Movie put it at the top of my must-see list in 1985. My family were big Dudley Moore fans and McDonald's was pushing it with a Happy Meal tie-in. So we drove a few towns over to see it the weekend it opened. It was a great movie-going experience with a very well-decorated theater and an appearance by Santa Claus. I was convinced this was going to be a huge hit, but unfortunately it wasn't in the United States (the people in the UK were more impressed). I start the episode talking about when my family went to see the movie and how disruptive Santa's appearance was there. How could you expect a kid to concentrate on on anything when Santa was around? Then I move on the film itself. I discuss the plot, its production, the stars of the film, its reception and much more. There is a lot of Christmas movies and specials you can watch, but I wanted to talk about Santa Claus the Movie because it is often overlooked. In the United States it doesn't get a lot of replays. No 24 hour marathon. Nothing. It might not be, A Christmas Store, but I think as a holiday film its charming and deserves to be remembered.

The tearjerker "Six Weeks" starred Mary Tyler Moore, Dudley Moore and a talented ballerina named Katherine Healy. It came out in 1982 during awards season and managed to score two Golden Globe noms and a Razzie nomination. Frequent guest Peter Sobczynski has been waiting for over a year to talk about it with Kerry and Collin and even went so far as to buy them a copy of the book upon which the film is based. Collin does a dramatic reading of a few pages of this piece of literature. How do the film and book compare? How did such a talented cast get roped into this project? Should Peter really  apologize for bringing us this film? All this, plus a few titles from the month of July for the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. Blu-ray titles covered: Warner Bros: "Twister" (1996) (4K) "Challengers" (2024) Paramount: "Swingers" (1996) "When Worlds Collide" (1951) MGM: "The Mighty Quinn" (1989) Sony: "The Lady From Shanghai" (1948) (4K) Criterion: "Perfect Days" (2023) (4K)

John Rain & Paul Litchfield join Tyler to discuss Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's 1978 adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story, an attempt to make a hit mainstream comedy but which failed to find an audience. Mostly owing to it not being very good. Directed by American Paul Morrissey this was the first major film project he made without the involvement of Andy Warhol. Rather bizarrely Morrissey was a fan of the Carry On films and he was keen to bring that sort of humour to the screen, enlisting Kenneth Williams to play Sir Henry Baskerville and stuffing it full of familiar faces from the world of British comedy. The result was a bit of a mess, with indoor fog and urinating dogs small compensation for proper belly laughs but there is still plenty to talk about and some titters among the dross. It's not a complete dog of a film. And why are we covering it on Goon Pod? Why, for the small scene-stealing cameo from Spike Milligan as a policeman. Enjoy! Many thanks to the wonderful Jonathan Roberts for this episode's artwork! There's also a taster of August's edition of Goon Pod Film Club, in which Tim Worthington talks Billy Liar! A Dudley Moore movie that should speak to anyone in communications - sales, marketing etc...Crazy People. I now know that its Boxy, but good but I always remember it being boxy but safe. Anyway..Marcus Sheridan's book They Ask, You Answer, reminded me of the movie - as it did LIAR, LIAR with Jim Carey - the idea of telling the truth despite knowing the consequences might be just terrible, when in truth they won't be. But you'll never know until you start telling the whole truth about your business - your honesty over the exact value you offer, where your weakness might be and the costs...publishing a cost that you can stand over and not worry what exposure your competition gets. His book is excellent - I'd recommend it for anyone that seems to be spending more time getting the message right and needs to build up the confidence required to say what needs to be said...?

Special thanks to everyone who joined us last week for our recent "All About Aesthetics" livestream, episode 10 focused around Blake Edwards masterful film, "10". Enjoy and see you soon! More on this special stream ,here: For this, the tenth episode of the Aesthetics series, I will focus on the Blake Edwards 1979 masterpiece 10 with the large and unusually terrific cast of Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, Julie Andrews, Robert Webber, Brian Dennehy and Dee Wallace. Although on a more surface level this is Edwards' comedic and even philosophic take on the Sexual Revolution and changing societal mores I will show how it is also compatible with the current discussion in this series of the shift from pre-Rock culture of the 30s-60s, represented by the main character George who is a jazz pianist and composer (!) and the post-Rock era (as well as disco), represented by Bo Derek, the woman to whom George is so deeply drawn. In this sense 10 is as much about aesthetics styles and tastes as it is human relationships. It is also in so many ways quintessentially 1970s filmmaking, a nod back to my 1970s film series while being utterly timeless: one of the most classically and tightly written plays or scripts from Edwards, or really anybody, in the era. #boderek#blakeedwards #henrymancini #muzak #easylistening #sexualrevolution #julieandrews #annettehaven #dudleymoore #deewallace #briandennehy #bartending #cocktailounge #robertwebber #songwriting #hollywood #breakfastattiffanys #audreyhepburn #jacklemmon #waltermatthau #comedy #bedroomfarce #farce #samwasson #vacation #resort #1980s #playboy # #piano #jazz #1979 #1970s #johnritter #california #losangeles #marriage #wedding #hughhefner #polyamory #monogamy #theatre #playwright #sob #petersellars #theparty #leeremick #thedaysofwineandroses #thegreatrace #tonycurtis #thepinkpanther #auterism #warnerborthers #disco #1960s #1950s #dentistry #oralsurgery #slapstick --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support

Brendan Morley joins Nathan to discuss the almost-forgotten animated musical (you read that right), The Mighty Kong (1998). It's not only the first Kong musical, it's arguably the best—which isn't saying much. Still, it has an all-star talent line-up with Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid) as Ann Darrow, Dudley Moore as “C.B.” Denham, and music by the Sherman Brothers. The Top 100 Project

All of our February podcasts will be about romantic/passionate films with one-word titles...and we begin "Love In A Word Month" with a chat about Arthur. Steve Gordon's blockbuster comedy was the rare laughy performance that won an Oscar. John Gielgud took it home for what is the funniest role in the movie. Dudley Moore, on the other hand, cackles at every joke he makes when he's drunk, although at least he's actually sweet when he's not playing it blitzed. Liza Minnelli brings a lot of sass to this male-dominated yuckfest as Moore's love interest. She has chemistry with the other 2 guys. It's just that we wish we'd laughed a lot more often and---while the violent climax at the wedding is amusing---the last 5 minutes of the movie are dreadfully unearned. It was a bad ending to what was already a flawed story. So alert the media that our 567th tall glass of Have You Ever Seen is rather critical of Arthur.
