In 2025 we will be taking some additional further looks back into films from beyond 20 years, because the year 2005 was, to put it plainly, a garbage year of films... so what better way to enjoy our time together than travelling 35 years back to the Best Picture winning epic "Dances With Wolves."We enjoy at least four new beers, have some fun trivia, and overall just gush on a film that somehow gets overlooked in film history thanks to another film from 1990 which we will cover in the next happy hour.We hope you enjoy the episode and thanks for your support! Thank you so much for joining. What an honor it is that you chose to share time with me. This podcast series uses the art of story telling to share one of the most amazing adventures in life, what I refer to as “A Modern-Day Vision Quest.” The adventure was my journey of Personal Growth, Self-Discovery, and Enlightenment.  To sum it up briefly, I had healed most of the wounds and impact from a traumatic childhood which I talk about in my book, Discovering Michael: An Inspiration Guide to Personal Growth & Self-Discovery. Following this phase of growth (which I term Personal Growth), what surfaced were nagging thoughts deep within to related to understanding who I truly am (Self-Discovery), and what life was all about and how I fit in (Enlightenment). Inspired by the movie, "Dances With Wolves", and The Call" by Jennifer James, I left a full-time job to backpack and volunteer around the world. I came face-to-face with situations that challenged my prior beliefs and ultimately resulted in learning about life itself and Discovering Michael. This talk is a collection of true stories about my adventures and learnings to hopefully engage you in a thought-provoking manner, while guiding and inspiring you for your own journey of self-discovery!! Part 4 continues with real-life stories about the segue I made from the Personal Growth stage to the Self-Discovery stage. In Part 3, I talked about the synchronistic events and people that came into my life that were preparing me for my Modern Day Vision Quest. As I reflected on the recent events and encounters, it became clear that it was time for another leap of faith, this time to venture out into the unknown, the world around me. I had two key intentions phrased as questions: 1) Why Did I Experience So Much Pain & Suffering?, and 2) What is The Meaning of Life? Low and behold, my friend called me and asked if I wanted to join him and his brother on a trip to Europe. At the same time I was returning to home and volunteering in some profound ways, all having to deal with death, although I had no idea of this commonality at first. Off I went on my first leg of my quest. Here are stories to help guide and inspire you to take your own journey within!! This Episode Image portrays the wonder I had as a child to escape the bondages of my past and eagerness to discover what is out there!!     Discovering Michael: An Inspirational Guide to Personal Growth and Self-Discovery, Balboa PressLink to Book on Amazon

Part 3 continues with real-life stories about the segue I made from the Personal Growth stage to the Self-Discovery stage. There was a change within me following all the work I did in the Personal Growth stage, that was longing for a deeper understanding of self. It was characterized by questions such as "Who Am I?", "What Do I Stand For?" and "What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?" Before I was aware of the questions was a nagging feeling to learn more about myself and life. I share my story about the events and people that came into my life to clarify what this feeling was all about, and ultimately the amazing adventure I was about to embark on.

Matthew and Riki dive deep into Indigenous representation in media, using the 2022 film Prey as a launching point for a broader discussion about the evolution of Native American portrayals in Hollywood. The conversation explores how this Predator franchise entry breaks new ground while honoring both the source material and Indigenous culture. How does Prey set a new standard for Indigenous representation? The hosts discuss the film's groundbreaking achievements, including its predominantly Native cast led by Amber Midthunder, authentic cultural consultation, and the historic creation of a Comanche language dub – a first in movie history. The discussion highlights how producer Jane Myers' involvement as a Comanche and Blackfoot consultant helped ensure cultural authenticity throughout production. What can we learn from revisiting Dances With Wolves (1990)? Riki presents a compelling case for reexamining the film's legacy, arguing that while imperfect, it represented a significant step forward in Native American representation. The hosts explore how the film launched the careers of prominent Native actors like Graham Greene and Wes Studi, while setting new standards for language authenticity and cultural portrayal in mainstream Hollywood. How do these films compare to other attempts at cultural representation? The conversation expands to examine other films like The Last Samurai and Avatar, discussing the complex dynamics of white savior narratives and the importance of authentic cultural consultation in historical dramas.Other topics covered:The evolution of the Predator franchise and how Prey reinvents itThe role of French trappers in the film and their thematic significanceThe importance of authentic language use in Indigenous filmsThe impact of Dances With Wolves on subsequent Native American representation in HollywoodThe complexities of casting Native actors across different tribal affiliationsThe problematic aspects of The Last Samurai and its historical inaccuraciesThe representation of Indigenous peoples in modern media and tourist cultureThe episode concludes by emphasizing the ongoing journey toward better Indigenous representation in media, highlighting both the progress made and the work still needed. While Prey represents a significant step forward, the hosts acknowledge that authentic representation requires continued commitment from the entertainment industry to elevate Indigenous voices both in front of and behind the camera.Use these links to get some of the books and movies we mention on the podcast, while helping us keep the lights on!Comanche Marker Trees of Texas by Jimmy Arterberry, one of the authenticity consultants on PreyPreyDances with WolvesThe Last SamuraiAvatar**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Lee Child created his tough guy protagonist Jack Reacher, a former military policeman who roams America fighting crime, in 1997. Writing a book a year since his debut Killing Floor, Lee Child established himself as one of the most acclaimed and popular novelists in his genre, and has now sold over 100 million copies worldwide. The Reacher books have been adapted for a film starring Tom Cruise and, more recently, an Amazon Prime television series. Lee Child's latest publication, Safe Enough, is a collection of short stories. Talking to John Wilson, Child recalls his upbringing in Birmingham and how his childhood passion for reading was fuelled by frequent visits to the local library. For This Cultural Life, he chooses a Ladybird book which told the Biblical story of David and Goliath as an early inspiration, acknowledging that the giant figure of Goliath probably inspired the physique of 6'5” tall Reacher. He also remembers the impact of a book called My American Home which depicted an array of houses and apartments throughout America, the country in which Child would later live and set his novels. He also discusses how working for 18 years as a Granada television producer, overseeing the transmission of dramas including Brideshead Revisited, helped forge his understanding of storytelling. His work as a union shop steward, which brought him into conflict with management and eventually led to him being made redundant, was the catalyst for his new career as a crime novelist in the late 1990s. His debut Reacher novel, a violent tale of vengeance and rough justice was, he admits, written out of anger following his dismissal from Granada. Lee Child also chooses the 1990 movie Dances With Wolves, directed by and starring Kevin Costner, as another influence on the creation of his fictional hero Jack Reacher. Steve fell in love with film as a child living in Venezuela, and after returning to America, he ended up convincing his university professors to accept course-specific short films in place of term papers. After graduating from USC, Steve drove off to Atlanta and landed a two-week PA gig alongside the GUNSMOKE crew on a mercenary job during the classic show's break in schedule. Steve later reveals how he made the transition from low-budget filmmaking in middle America to more mainstream filmmaking in Hollywood, and we learn how Steve leveraged his relationship with director Paul Schrader to break into assistant directing. Steve discusses how, as an assistant director, he keeps things moving at any cost, and he shares why he sometimes elects to designate himself as the lighting rod of blame on difficult shoots. We also discuss how Steve manages the different personalities on set, and he shares a number of episodes from his career in which he lost or narrowly avoided losing his job. Towards the end, we also learn how Steve came to finally work with director Robert Altman, one of his cinematic heroes.

Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Two Men Arrested as Gwinnett Police Shut Down Illegal Casino On June 18, Gwinnett County Police Department conducted a raid on Sosa's Billiards located at 6070 S. Norcross Tucker Road in unincorporated Norcross. This operation followed a year-long investigation initiated after a traffic stop where the occupant revealed visiting a local "casino." Undercover officers confirmed illegal gambling activities at the establishment. Steven Bae Kim, the owner, and Seth Ryan Abernathy, an employee, were arrested for charges related to commercial gambling. Eight others were also arrested for gambling offenses. The raid resulted in the seizure of drugs and cash. GCPD encourages anyone with information to contact detectives at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 404-577-8477. STORY 2: Kevin Costner: ‘Horizon' Saga Is a Four-Movie ‘Film Novel' About The American West Kevin Costner's affinity for westerns spans decades, starting with his role in "Silverado" in 1985 and culminating in his Academy Award-winning film "Dances With Wolves." He has revisited the genre in notable projects like "Hatfields and McCoys" and "Yellowstone," which reflect his fascination with the lawless drama of the frontier. Now, Costner returns to his passion with "Horizon: An American Saga," a four-film series he directs and stars in, chronicling the westward expansion during and after the Civil War. Costner emphasizes that each film in the series tells a complete story while advancing a larger narrative, avoiding cliffhangers. He views the cinematic scale as essential for portraying the vast landscapes and epic journeys integral to the western genre, aiming to create a timeless saga that explores themes of survival, community, and the pursuit of dreams amidst historical upheaval. STORY 3: Cyberbullying Common in the World of Online Gaming A recent study reveals pervasive cyberbullying and sexual harassment in professional video gaming and online gaming. Approximately 96% of players reported experiencing online abuse within the last year. Women and professional players are particularly frequent targets of this abuse. The study underscores the widespread nature of these issues within the gaming community, highlighting significant challenges that players face in maintaining a safe and inclusive online environment. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

We can thank Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" for reinvigorating Westerns for the '90s, leading to other Shat movies like "Tombstone" and "Unforgiven." For '80s kids, it also served as a gateway to exploring American Indian culture and history. Despite questionable mustaches and a conspicuous score, "Dances With Wolves" was visually stunning, emotionally effective and, in Ash's case, occasionally terrifying. Yes, it still had some corny narration and gratuitous slow-motion. But that's the '90s, baby! In this episode, Gene applauds Costner for casting a "kinda old" lead lady. Ash hails "Dances With Wolves" as the model of using a simple story to great impact, and Big D asks how John Dunbar became fluent in Lakota. The Shat Crew also discusses the buffalo hunt, the noble savage, brain damage from repeated blows to the head and how much Americans suck.
