Sean and Amanda have an action-packed show today where they cover three new releases. Before diving in, they react to the recent trailers for ‘The Odyssey' and ‘Avengers: Doomsday' and quickly discuss ‘Zootopia 2' and ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash' (1:38). Then, they discuss Paul Feig's ‘The Housemaid,' starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, which they found disappointing and prompts a discussion about what type of movies are being made for women in 2025 (9:09). Next, they talk through ‘Anaconda,' starring Jack Black, which they describe as a cynical, depressing exercise in IP franchise filmmaking (38:37). Finally, they briefly touch on ‘Song Sung Blue,' a musical drama about a Neil Diamond tribute band starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson (50:00), before director Craig Brewer joins Sean to break down how his filmmaking career started, explain why music plays such a profound role in his work, and tell a fascinating story about the lengthy process behind casting Hudson (1:01:35). Timothée Chalamet proves once again that he's the real deal in the whacky comic drama, "Marty Supreme." It's an offbeat character study from filmmaker Josh Safdie, set in the 1950s and involving the misadventures of a manipulative, conceited but somehow likable table tennis phenom. While fictional, it's inspired by the remarkable life of ping pong ace Marty Reisman. "Marty Supreme" is supremely watchable. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star in "Song Sung Blue," a biopic about a Neil Diamond tribute band called "Lightning and Thunder" that achieved a degree of success in Milwaukee in the 1980s. They experience extreme highs and lows in their personal and professional lives. The stars are very appealing, but if you're not a fan of Diamond's music, steer clear. Amanda Seyfried gives a strong performance in the unorthodox historical musical drama, "The Testament of Ann Lee." She portrays the title character, the founder of the Shaker movement who was considered by some of her followers as the second coming of Christ. She attempted to establish a utopian religious society in 1700s New England but met with ample hardships and considerable backlash. The music is a mix of original songs and hymns of the era. “The Testament of Anne Lee” is dark and dramatically erratic but oddly involving. Kate Winslet makes her directorial debut in the Netflix family drama, "Goodbye June." Winslet plays one of four siblings who come together when their mother, played by Helen Mirren, is hospitalized with terminal cancer during the holiday season. It's manipulative and obvious, but the sterling cast prevents “Goodbye June” from becoming too saccharine.

There are so many “firsts” on this episode, we're honestly not sure what to do with ourselves.Let's start by telling you (in case you skipped the headline) that we're reviewing Song Sung Blue, the based-on-a-true-story of real-life Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, also known as Lightning & Thunder. Their Neil Diamond tribute act — with occasional departures into ABBA, Patsy Cline and others — played stages around the area for nearly 20 years, eventually catching the attention of writer/director Craig Brewer.Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson came on board his project to play the lead roles, with Jackman in particular embracing it in a huge way. That brings us to our first “first,” which saw the Oriental Theatre host a premiere for Song Sung Blue (reportedly at Jackman's request) and give us a chance to attend our very first Hollywood-ish event. In addition to Dori, Radio Milwaukee social media strategist Zoey Knox elbowed her way to the edge of the red carpet, which was appropriately blue for the occasion. So of course we invited Zoey for her first Cinebuds appearance to share her thoughts on the movie, as well as what it was like for her and Dori to interview (sort of) the one and only Hugh Jackman!!!You'll hear that admittedly brief but still wonderful chat in the full episode, which also includes our hosts' reaction to this very Milwaukee tale. Some quick highlights: Hudson really nails her portrayal of Claire Sardina, she and Jackman clearly have legit singing chops, and the general uplifting-ness of the story make this a perfect release for the holiday season.Get all of the details in this episode, and make sure you check in with us after the holiday break for another perspective on Song Sung Blue from filmmaker Jimmy Sammarco, whose 2008 documentary of the same name was instrumental to the biopic hitting theaters this Christmas.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

On Monday afternoon, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson stopped by the Vogue offices for a live conversation about their new film, Song Sung Blue which comes out Christmas Day. The project, inspired by the real-life story of Mike and Claire Sardinia—a Wisconsin couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute band is based on the documentary of the same name, which director Craig Brewer first encountered at a festival and later adapted for the screen. “I realized that everyone is living an extraordinary life,” Jackman shared to Chloe and Vogue's Deputy editory Taylor when reflecting on why he chose to take the role of Mike. After earning a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Claire, Kate speaks candidly about rediscovering her voice, crediting Sia (who she worked with on the film Music) with inspiring her to sing more freely. She recalls being pushed onto the microphone at her 16th birthday by her mother, Goldie Hawn, to perform “That's What Friends Are For,” with Quincy Jones in attendance. “He told me to get into the studio,” Hudson remembers.Plus, Hugh and Kate discuss what it's been like singing at bars across the world, what their tribute band would be (hint: Fleetwood Mac mentioned!), and answer a fun question from none other than Anna Wintour about whether or not they should adapt this film as a theater production. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture.

Studios love to hold movies back until the end of the year to sneak into awards conversations. "Song Sung Blue" with Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, along with "Marty Supreme" starring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, are among the films trying to catch the attention of critics. Another film that hits a similar chord is "Sentimental Value," the latest film from Joachim Trier starring Renate Reinsve, Elle Fanning and Stellan Skarsgård. In this episode, co-host Bruce Miller catches up with Trier about the film and his overall style that allows his films to "say enough, but not too much." We also talk about the first batch of episodes of "Stranger Things," which released the first half of its season in time for the Thanksgiving break. Co-host Terry Lipshetz watched the episodes with his family and shares his thoughts about the final run. ‘Song Sung Blue', a story of hope amidst a tragic love story. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star as Mike and Claire Sardina, aka Lightning and Thunder, a duo Neil Diamond tribute act that got major attention in Milwaukee. The film is based off a documentary about the couple with the same name, that was released in 2008. Before working together on this project, Jackman and Hudson didn't really know one another – meeting a few times but not in any great detail. But for a movie like this, where the relationship between the two leads is the basis of the film, that can be a risk. “On day one, Kate said to me, you know, if we don't work, this movie doesn't work,” Jackman told Mike Hosking. “And she was right, but I had a lot of confidence.” “I had a strong sense that it was gonna be great, but I didn't know it was gonna be this great or this easy.” For Hudson, things clicked into place when the two kissed for the first time. “It's like we've been kissing each other for years,” she said. One review described the role as Jackman's most ambitious yet, a sentiment the actor agreed with. “I think it combines a lot of different things that I do, but in many ways it was asking things of me that I hadn't done before.” Hudson agreed, comparing it to asking a baseball player if they want to play in the major leagues. “It's scary, but I want that.” “I love hard work, and I like work that gives me a little of the, you know, the butterflies.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
