Amy Vincent, ASC on the visual heart of Song Sung Blue

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 342: Amy Vincent, ASC Cinematographer Amy Vincent, ASC feels like she's reached the place where she wants to be, working on the kinds of films she likes. Vincent and director Craig Brewer have collaborated on several music-forward films, including Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan, and a Footloose remake in 2011. Throughout the years, Vincent and Brewer have created a shared cinematic language built on deep trust. Their latest collaboration, Song Sung Blue, is a biopic about a Neil Diamond tribute band. Craig Brewer had seen the original documentary Song Sung Blue at a film festival, and knew that he wanted to adapt the story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who formed a Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning and Thunder. To bring their world to life, Vincent's primary mission was to protect Brewer's instinctual, writer-driven process. While many modern productions retreat to the controlled environment of a soundstage, Song Sung Blue leaned into the grit of reality. The film was shot entirely on practical locations in New Jersey, doubling for Milwaukee. Vincent admits she was initially reluctant to embrace the cramped quarters of real homes, but the shot design was quickly informed by the limited space. Pre-production tests on location with period light fixtures and wood paneling on the actors' hair and makeup also gave the entire production team a chance to see the film's vision come to life. For the film's musical sequences in bars and on stage, Vincent made a deliberate technical choice to embrace the performance lighting. By choosing a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the lighting fixtures themselves could be part of the composition. Rather than hiding the sources, she embraced lens flares and visible fixtures, treating the lighting as a character in the performance spaces. This added an authentic "stage" texture to the Lightning and Thunder shows. The visual language of the film was born long before the first day of principal photography. Vincent was present during the actors' vocal recordings and rehearsals, watching how leads Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson interacted. She points to “Play Me,” a scene where the characters sit back-to-back on a piano bench after they first meet, as a product of this observation. “That all started for me by watching the actors physically moving and singing in those initial rehearsals.” By the time they reached the set, the camera movement was already a natural extension of their physical performances. For Vincent, Song Sung Blue is a project where the technical execution perfectly aligns with a narrative she believes in. “Craig is aligned with the idea of telling stories about people who dream beyond their means,” she says. “I always love that. It's something I hope I get to continue doing.” See Song Sung Blue in theaters and streaming on VOD. Where the Captain America trailer played much like a silent film, this one gives us a monologue's worth of dialogue from Thor as he prays for strength to fight one last enemy. On the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast this week, Ryan Coogler detailed what Black Panther 2 might have been before the death of Chadwick Boseman. T'Challa and his young son would have fought Namor side by side, with Namor being an “insanely dangerous” version of the character. Coogler reiterated that the film they made meant he “got a chance to make a movie about women…I love that movie so much.” Boseman was too ill to even read the original script that Coogler finished. Though he's working on resurrecting The X-Files for television, Coogler said of Black Panther 3 that he has “this movie on my heart.” With a fairly quiet Christmas at the box office, Avatar: Fire and Ash continued to wear the crown, climbing to a global total of $760 million, while A24's Marty Supreme starring Timothee Chalamet had a studio best opening to $27.1 million. Other films with big names opened including Anaconda featuring Paul Rudd and Jack Black; The Housemaid, starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney; and Song Sung Blue, which was star-studded with Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. On this episode he talks about the technical mountain he had to climb before he allowed himself to take on that role. Then he takes us back to his early days and two giant, back-to-back acting disappointments that somehow didn't break his drive; talks about how welcoming encouragement from directors like Martin Scorsese helped bring out the best in him; explains what's special about the New York acting community; and much more. There are so many “firsts” on this episode, we're honestly not sure what to do with ourselves.Let's start by telling you (in case you skipped the headline) that we're reviewing Song Sung Blue, the based-on-a-true-story of real-life Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, also known as Lightning & Thunder. Their Neil Diamond tribute act — with occasional departures into ABBA, Patsy Cline and others — played stages around the area for nearly 20 years, eventually catching the attention of writer/director Craig Brewer.Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson came on board his project to play the lead roles, with Jackman in particular embracing it in a huge way. That brings us to our first “first,” which saw the Oriental Theatre host a premiere for Song Sung Blue (reportedly at Jackman's request) and give us a chance to attend our very first Hollywood-ish event. In addition to Dori, Radio Milwaukee social media strategist Zoey Knox elbowed her way to the edge of the red carpet, which was appropriately blue for the occasion. So of course we invited Zoey for her first Cinebuds appearance to share her thoughts on the movie, as well as what it was like for her and Dori to interview (sort of) the one and only Hugh Jackman!!!You'll hear that admittedly brief but still wonderful chat in the full episode, which also includes our hosts' reaction to this very Milwaukee tale. Some quick highlights: Hudson really nails her portrayal of Claire Sardina, she and Jackman clearly have legit singing chops, and the general uplifting-ness of the story make this a perfect release for the holiday season.Get all of the details in this episode, and make sure you check in with us after the holiday break for another perspective on Song Sung Blue from filmmaker Jimmy Sammarco, whose 2008 documentary of the same name was instrumental to the biopic hitting theaters this Christmas.#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.
