To be fair, whom among us wouldn't pretend that they were a famous author in order to get with Kate Hudson? Michael Shannon stars as a handyman who pretends to be a famous author, but maybe just maybe.......there's an author that's been waiting to be brought out all along. The crystal industry generates over $1 billion per year. But what exactly do crystals do? Some have said they store energy. Others say they have healing powers. But what does the science say? Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and fact-checker, comedian, and podcast host David C. Smalley break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Over the last five years, the number of Google searches for "crystal healing" has more than doubled — fueled, in part, by celebrity endorsements from the likes of Katy Perry, Kate Hudson, and Adele, who has been known to clutch one during performances to combat stage fright. A Himalayan pink salt lamp — marketed as having mood-boosting properties — was one of Amazon's best-selling home-improvement products over the 2017 holiday season among its Prime subscribers. Different crystals are said to possess certain powers — from bloodstone (which purports to improve circulation) to citrine (for enthusiasm and creativity bolstering) to sapphire (to prompt prosperity). According to Pew Research, whether you're the most staunch Christian or consider yourself "religiously unaffiliated," there’s a 62% chance that you believe in at least one New Age belief —including crystals storing energy. This probably accounts for the crystal industry raking in more than $1 billion per year. Is this all a load of poppycock, or does science lend any credibility to claims that crystals are anything but pretty rocks imbued with perfectly normal rock powers? Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. If you have something you'd like us to tackle here on Skeptical Sunday, drop Jordan a line at email@example.com and let him know! Michael Maren started his career as a journalist in Africa. Inspired by movies like The African Queen, Jason and the Argonauts, and Beau Geste, Maren followed an unclear dream, eventually learning to write, getting a book optioned by HBO, and then coming back to the US with a passion for filmmaking. Based on the book, Shriver, A Little White Lie stars Michael Shannon, Kate Hudson and Don Johnson. The description reads, “When a handyman living in New York City is mistaken for a famous and famously reclusive writer, he's brought to a university where he is to deliver a keynote address to save the school's literary festival.” In the interview, Maren talks about the connection between journalism and screenwriting, advice from Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), how to find a narrative through line, working with Michael Shannon, and how he bought the rights to Shriver for only $100 dollars. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It only takes about 60-seconds and it really helps convince some of the hard-to-get guests to sit down and have a chat (simply scroll to the bottom on your iTunes Podcast app and click “Write Review"). Glass Onion is a whodunnit murder mystery starring Daniel Craig as world famous detective, Benoit Blanc. It's a sequel (sort of) to the 2019 whodunnit murder mystery Knives Out, where Blanc is tasked with looking into the death of a famous author. In Glass Onion, Benoit Blanc ends up on a private island in Greece owned by a billionaire tech mogul. When a weekend of catching up with old friends turns diabolical, Benoit must solve yet another murder. Much like Knives Out, Daniel Craig is joined by an all-star cast including Janelle Monae, Edward Norton, Katharyn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., and Dave Bautista. Our ATMI producers got together to discuss the twists and turns of Glass Onion, its unique release strategy from Netflix, and who they hope to see in future Benoit Blanc mysteries. It's time for our annual Valentine's Day rom com episode, and nothing says romance like two duplicitous people enacting horrific deceptions upon each other in an attempt to advance their positions at work. This horrific web of deceit is the plot that forms the backbone of 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, starring Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey, and a bunch of supporting actors in thankless roles. Join Leigh, Brendan, and Chris as they revisit this beloved (?) romantic comedy that's just slightly heightened enough to be mildly interesting but just unpleasant enough to leave you slightly loathing everyone involved here. Take your shoes off and breathe out as we discuss the state of the rom com in 2003, the cinematic forefathers of a romance built entirely on a horrible foundation of lies, and our continued reevaluation of Kate Hudson's career. Perhaps fittingly, our themed cocktail this month is almost entirely alcohol, so get ready to frost yourself pretty hard. Continue reading →

Yoga isn't just an ancient practice. It can also be a lucrative business, especially in fitness-conscious California. What's more, yoga teachers can often have a lot of influence over their followers, making suggestions about their diet, sleep and sometimes, even politics. But as the Coronavirus pandemic dragged on, many people started noticing a surprising overlap between some of the alternative theories circulating in the wellness community and the conspiracy theories espoused by followers of Q-Anon — that the world is controlled by "the Deep State." Producer Emily Guerin from LAist Studios spent months looking into this connection. This week, we feature part one of her series, "Imperfect Paradise: Yoga's Queen of Conspiracy Theories." Guerin focuses on one LA-based yogi who went by the name Guru Jagat. She had a studio in Venice and was beloved as a charismatic, down-to-earth practitioner of Kundalini yoga. She had a book deal, a fashion line, celebrity clients like Alicia Keys and Kate Hudson and tens of thousands of Instagram followers. But within months of the first lockdown orders Guru Jagat had started questioning vaccines, holding in-person classes in defiance of lockdown orders, and wondering out loud whether the virus had something to do with alien invasions and secret space programs.

Look, Valentine's Day is fast approaching and we couldn't think of any rom com con(versation)s to have, so Leigh very kindly whipped up yet another round of our patented (patent pending) game where we have to decide what titles are real and what ones are fake. But THIS time, there's an eastern Asian twist to it, as all the titles are for K-Dramas (or J, or other countries, there's fertile ground here). There's a mystery afoot! And that mystery, dear listener, is the question: is Glass Onion a worthy follow up to its 2019 predecessor Knives Out? Is there more queer stuff here that warrants a whole episode-length discussion of one of the best new detective film series of the 21st century? How good at Among Us was Stephen Sondheim, actually? Ok, so there's way more than just one mystery, but your sleuths Eric and Laurence are more than ready to take up the case in this first episode of our 2023 Filmuary series! We chat the yassification of Benoit Blanc, some stellar performances from our girlies Janelle Monáe and Kate Hudson, and the not-so-subtle social/political commentary of these very modern mystery epics. All that, plus Eric's hype for Super Nintendo World and Laurence being a literary, bookish diva in this week's What Else We're Gay For.Thanks for listening friends, we'll be back next week for even more wonderful, smart, so delicious and so fabulous and so absolutely stunning podcasting content right here on Gay for Play!========Get in touch with us!EMAIL US at email@example.comFOLLOW G4P Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodTwitch: twitch.tv/gayforplaypodSupport the Show & Unlock Bonus Episodes on our PATREON========CREDITSIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Benny Kessler (@retro.spectacle.studio)Special thanks to our patrons: Blueberri Mary, Elijah Punzal, Trevor McTavish, Travis Ryans & Martha Turner
