It's the Valentine's Day gift you've been hoping for, another episode of Daftaboutcraft, the craft beer podcast! There's a distinctly Welsh feel to this episode as we feature not one but two breweries based in the land of the dragon. First up are Axeljack Brewery, aka Craig and Ian, who only started their South Wales-based brewery in August 2023, but have wasted no time in releasing quality beer. While Craig looks after the brewing, father-in-law Ian takes care of the business, and the pair place the emphasis squarely on flavour with their beers. Dave D was very impressed by one beer in particular - find out which one and where you can get hold of it.It's Wales to the fore in Brew To Me, as Dave B samples a beer from Geipel Brewing in Corwen. Brewer Erik has an interesting background, and is dedicated to showcasing lager and its varieties. For Dave D, it's a trip to Skipton and Two Rocks Brewing Co and their Dry Hopped Pale Ale, which belies its modest 2.5% ABV.For Hype or Tripe, we saddle up and hit the Oregon Trail, and road test some beefed-up versions of Elusive Brewing's most well-known beer, while The Brewer's Wife talks about the perils of social media. To share or not to share? We are sponsored by online bottle shop Hops At Home, and Andy Marsh appears with a trio of tempting discounts to take advantage of. Eagle-eared listeners may also work out what our big surprise is, which will be fully disclosed on the next episode! Daftaboutcraft is produced by us two guys, called Dave. We're massive fans of the craft beer scene and we release a new episode every three weeks. Check us out on Instagram, X and Facebook too!

It almost doesn't need repeating but breweries, like many businesses in the wider world of hospitality, have much to contend with in recent months and years. As we continue to adjust, post-pandemic, to what normal is - if there still is such as thing -  there are also other pressures to deal with.A cost of living crisis, rising energy costs and staff shortages are all major hurdles to producing and selling your beer. And last week, HMRC published its guidance to the upcoming changes to Alcohol Duty.Effective from the 1st August, HMRC outlined the rates of duty and also the new reliefs for draught products and small producers. But how might these affect you?Thankfully Andy Parker, the founder of Berkshire's Elusive Brewing, is on hand to explain.Recorded live yesterday at our Brewers Lectures in Bristol, Andy spoke on the background to these measures and shared some examples on how these revised rates could impact your brewery. And thanks to Andy, his presentation is also available to view and download right below, too. https://www.brewersjournal.info/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Andy-Parker.pdf

Today's guest is Ruth Mitchell, Operations Director at Elusive Brewing. Ruth has been with Elusive for just about a year now, but her promotion to Operations Director was relatively recent. As the role was still very new when we spoke, she tells us a bit about what her current day-to-day looks like, the vision for the future, and what her previous role as Head of Sales, Marketing and Events entailed. We then go all the way back to the beginning of Ruth's career in beer which has seen her work in sales roles for breweries including Adnams, Charles Wells, West Berkshire, Utopian and now Elusive. (She's also spent some time in gin sales, too!) As you'll hear, she's got a wealth of experience and knowledge to share, including advice on how to get started in a career in beer, the skills it takes to succeed in sales and much more. Finally, Ruth tells us what she enjoys most about being a part of the beer industry. (Just a quick heads-up Ruth's adorable sausage dog Bertie was in the room with her during our conversation, so you'll hear him chime in on occasion. Hopefully it's not too distracting!) Here's Ruth…

Anyone who has ever attempted to describe the flavours and aromas of a beer will know that putting language to what's in the glass is both challenging, subjective and needs the right terminology. But what if we don't possess the language for ourselves or a customer doesn't quite know what they're after, but they certainly know what they don't want...!As brewers, bar staff and bottle shop owners, it's our job to be able to help consumers navigate the turbid waters of Hazy IPAs and describe the 'soft, pillowy grapefruit' that awaits them upon first pour.In his latest reiteration of the Flavour Wheel, beer writer and educator Mark Dredge joins Nick this week to talk about how we talk about flavour and aroma and put language to beer.  Pick up a copy of the Flavour Wheel or the pack of 6 from beerdredge.comTHIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY LALLEMAND BREWINGLallemand Brewing, a division of Lallemand Inc., a global producer of yeast and bacteria, is helping breweries achieve their growth and quality goals by offering products, services, and education.Lallemand Brewing's premium brewing yeasts and bacteria deliver unmatched consistency, reliability, and purity, allowing brewers to take full control of the brewing process. At the forefront of innovation, Lallemand Brewing recently launched several dry yeast products: LalBrew Voss, LalBrew Verdant IPA, and WilBrew Philly Sour. For more information about Lallemand products in the UK please contact our local representative Andrew Paterson, global contacts details for the UK and other territories can be found via our website www.lallemandbrewing.comADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM CRISP MALTSince 1870, Crisp Malt has been producing the finest malt at Great Ryburgh in Norfolk.
