It's a recap of the 2024 NFL draft in The House of The Lombardi here on the Brewstilled podcast. In this episode, I recap the top storylines that came from the draft and how they can alter the NFL landscape in the 2024 NFL season. In the draft we saw some surprise choices such as when the Atlanta Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. What does the Atlanta move mean for Kirk Cousins? The Cowboys also may have lost out on a potential All Pro Player. The Chargers also resisted trade offers for Kirk Cousins. It was a unique draft in where the House of The Lombardi teams gave in to temptation while also trying to fills gaps in their roster. I'll discuss it here on Brewstilled with an English Bitter from Jackrabbit Brewing Co. as the beer pairing. It's all here on Brewstilled!
We're a "One Beer, ONe Guest" kind of a show this week, as we welcome Julia Herz, Executive Director of the American Homebrewers Association! Julia sent us her version of an English Bitter - a style we will always accept - and we had a lot of fun trying to break down her recipe. Then, we chatted about Julia's book, "Beer Pairing: The Essential Guide From The Pairing Pros" - a fantastic look at a better way you pair your beers with food. Learn more about your ad choices. A very close cousin to an English IPA, ESB was a forerunner catch-all for most early English beers. Ahead of its time, new ESB styles erupted as brewing methods evolved and brewers became more technical. While most still use an English yeast strain to coax out that traditional flavor, you can find American brewers putting their own take on this beer style as well, today. This week we're drinking Morland Old Speckled Hen from Greene King to unlock the “You're Extra Special” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers with the style of Extra Special / Strong Bitter or English Bitter! We also highlight Jackalope Brewing Company - The Ranch in Nashville, TN as our Verified Venue of the Week, and shout out Rotunda Brewing Company and New Anthem Beer Project for crafting the best beers we had this week.
We have our first ever Beer-Off episode and we've picked the classic style of English Bitter, which is BJCP Category 11. In this show we'll talk about the style, taste 3 Commercial Examples and Nick and Phil put up their Home Brewed versions to compare. We'll talk about what works and doesn't work, but mostly explain you why it is so satisfying to get out of your beer brewing/drinking comfort zone and give these often over looked classic styles another chance. It's just the plebs in the castle this week, and the guys are talking inert gases, English beer, new horizons, and wrapping last year's beer consumption up with a (kinda ratty looking) bow. Noah gets into the brewery's fledging affair with Nitrogen, its role in BBB's newest beer, an English-style bitter named Oi!, as well as potential growth for Nitro-finished cans within a predominantly hop-focused brewery. Matty, fired up from chatting with an idol last week, makes some public resolutions about video for the new year, which leads up to a modified Three Bay that has the guys host the absolute worst award ceremony you've ever heard. ............................................................................................................................. Today on Dr. Homebrew, we break down one of the more pure styles out there - English Bitter. Everything has to be in balance, with malt leading the charge. Not an easy thing to get right with modern beer palates the way they are. Afterwards, we move on to a Smoked Baltic Porter - another sub-style that is hard to perfect. Ghost Runners Brewery - Vancouver, WA Running Up Pils, Pilsner, 5% ABV, 28 IBU "Inspired by tradition, this German-style Pilsner is crafted with a mult-step infusion mash with old world pilsen malt. We then lager ferment over three different temperatures until the flavor profile is just right. This light German Lager is packed full of flavor and is perfect accompaniment to the spring and summer. Brothers Cascadia - Vancouver, WA Fermentator 2: Judgement Haze, Hazy IPA, 6.2% "In a future where the hard seltzer’s rule, our own creation of fruity water has nearly wiped out humanity. It seemed harmless, no one thought that a few White Claws at the beach or a case of Trulys on the river was a big deal, but then they took over! Back in the present day, our savior (the outdated, but crowd favorite) is back to save humanity! An aromatic Hazy IPA with all the tropical and dank flavors to show people that beer can be even more fun than this new “low carb” villain." It’s been a long-time coming. We finally make it out to record at one of Pennsylvania’s oldest and best known craft breweries, Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown. With founder, brewer and pioneer Carol Stoudt, along with Event Coordinator and master-of-breads-and-cheese, Elizabeth Stoudt, we talked about the long and storied history of this landmark establishment. We also discussed the importance of the seemingly fading concept of flagship beers and “Flagship February”, an initiative to celebrate and rekindle the love for mainstay brews. Plus, a sneak peek at upcoming beers, packaging, and other plans for the Stoudts complex. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My Beer. And Steph talked about the English Bitter and ESB styles in Know Your Beers. All while enjoying a buffet of beautiful brews. Want to hear Carol Stoudt talk about mowing down emus with a machine gun? So dear friends there is a good reason why Cock and Croc drink their beers from around the world together in their respective basements. Contrary to what you think it is not due to any excessive exuberance or atonal singing, although these are perfectly good and regularly occurring reasons. No dear friends it is actually due to their amazing ability to offend others when attempting to pronounce foreign words, and this episode on Welsh beers is a doozy! Although they really did try this time. Enjoy and apologies to Wales in advance. On this episode of The Session, Mary and Ross Hudspeth from Four Generals brewing in Renton, Washington joined us to talk about our favorite subject ... lagers! They sent us three lagers, an English Bitter, a Milk Stout, and of course ... a hazy IPA.
