Martin made a trip to Stockholm and picked up some beers. The subway system in Stockholm is amazing and worth the time to ride each line to see all the different decorations per stop. It's a lot of fun. Martin stopped on the Grona Linjen or Green Line because they have beers. He picked up two beers from them. Bira Bira Bira is a nice lager at 5% ABV. Högdalen is a 6.2% English IPA. It's always fun to try a new brewery and we'll be riding the Grona Linjen again soon. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #ipa #lager

The boys drink and review an English IPA from Guilford Brewing, then discuss the internet, and why we allow children on the thing. People 50 years from now are going to condemn us for the way we've destroyed children's innocence by giving them access to this putrid environment. Australia recently passed a bill to restrict social media to 16 and above. That might be a good start We have to show an ID to buy beer or cigarettes, why do we allow children on the porn-infested internet. Why not a kid-friendly, open internet, and another internet where you have to sign on and demonstrate you're an adult? There are legit privacy questions, of course. Will the government -- or Apple -- have a record of what everyone does online? Those are excuses. There are solutions to this problem, we're just not trying hard enough to create them.

Explore bitter beers with Midwest Coast, including ESBs, English Pale Ales, and IPAs that cater to evolving palates. 01:48 Beer Myth: What's a “girly drink” when it comes to beers? Katherine and Brian and their guests shatter the myth that some beers are “manly” and others are not.  07:32 Midwest Coast Brewing: Cameron Compton, founder of Midwest Coast, and Timothy Ficken, brewery manager, talk about what brought them together to Midwest Coast. They share the different beer trends that were emerging in their very different parts of the country, with hops being a central part of one brewer's background and almost completely absent from the other's. Cameron also discusses his time in the military and in the tech world and what compelled him to move with his wife to Chicago, where he had never lived before, and open a brewery with his sister. Cameron also explains how hop contracts work and why they're so brutal for brewers to work with. What is an English IPA and what is an ESB? Timothy explains the concept behind the “Extra Special Bitter” and how they developed an English Pale Ale in order to make a certain style more palatable – and marketable – for customers. Katherine brings up a conversation about whether the Western palate really is designed to handle hops (is it?) and Brian explores the idea of a person's palate changing as they grow older. What is hoppy and what is earthy? An EXTENSIVE debate ensues, including a confused Cody who doesn't know how to explain what he's drinking. 54:20 Beer Behavior: When is it okay for brewers to chase trends and when is it not? Katherine gives props to Cameron and Timothy for sticking to the styles they like to brew, which evolves into a discussion of the benefits of trend-chasing – as long as someone else is doing it. 1:01:48 Today's Featured Merchandise: Our amazing baseball hats, available in multiple styles and colors! English IPA - Strong, bitter and completely misunderstood, the English India pale ale (or English IPA) bridges the gap between past and present. No other style represents modern craft brewing excitement quite like the IPA, and while this English beer differs widely from the American version it inspires, this strong member of the English pale ale family has plenty of its own to offer — including all of the history behind this variety.   Beer Representation: Great Lakes Brewing Company – Commodore Perry 7.7% ABV 70 IBUs Beer Description: What's this? A very close cousin to an English IPA, ESB was a forerunner catch-all for most early English beers. Ahead of its time, new ESB styles erupted as brewing methods evolved and brewers became more technical. While most still use an English yeast strain to coax out that traditional flavor, you can find American brewers putting their own take on this beer style as well, today. This week we're drinking Morland Old Speckled Hen from Greene King to unlock the “You're Extra Special” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers with the style of Extra Special / Strong Bitter or English Bitter! In this podcast, I talk about the seven mistakes I made as a personal trainer. This was not the most enjoyable thing for me to do! But it led to a pretty damn good podcast (in my opinion). Much better than if I'd named my seven greatest successes or my best features. The Top Seven Mistakes I made as a Personal Trainer Analysing my mistakes as a trainer helped me improve, and now that I've got some perspective on my time as a PT, it's really helping me to plan for the future. I'm not going to list the mistakes here, you can hear them on the podcast. But there is a common theme for most of them, which is: Treating my clients like athletes Not having enough confidence in myself The second one is a bit of an odd one because in many ways I had too much confidence in myself! When you are a trainer, you have to act like the best trainer in the world, and in some ways, you start to believe your own hype. But when dealing with my clients, I erred on the side of safety too often. Particularly when it came to diet. I've learned from that now, and as I say in the podcast. Caring about your clients so much that you end up being overly-cautious, is not the worst trait to have as a trainer. Shelby 5% IPA by Thornbridge Brewery What a lovely surprise this beer was. In two different ways. My Mrs came back from the Co-op with a gift box of two bottles of Shelby and a beer mug, all for £5. While I'm fairly indifferent to the Peaky Blinders tv show (have only watched one episode to be fair), the mug is fantastic. The beer was gorgeous too. I guessed that it was an English IPA rather than an American IPA, and this seems to be the case. The main hop used is Fuggles which is an English hop variety, and there is a distinct lack of American hops. It also uses a combination of English and German malts. It's an excellent English IPA, and I am definitely looking forward to drinking the other one as soon as I finish writing this! Check out my article on English beers to see some similar varieties.

English-Style India Pale Ale(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/150/Historically, English breweries exported a variety of beer styles to colonies across the British empire. But shipping ales to troops stationed in India was a particular challenge in an age when the journey took months and every cask contained wild Brettanomyces yeast. To withstand the voyage, Pale Ales were tweaked to be maltier, higher in alcohol content, and hoppier, as hops are a natural preservative. Historians believe that IPA was then watered down for the troops, while officers and the elite would savor the beer at full strength. Over time, taxation has caused the English IPA to assume a lower alcohol. The leaner the brew the less malt is required, and less is the need for a strong hop presence, which would easily put the brew out of balance. Expect earthy, floral English hop character and a malt profile defined by notes of biscuit, toast, and toffee. -Color – Gold to Copper-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium malt flavor should be present-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Hop aroma and flavor is medium to high, and often flowery. Beer and Bullshit is back with the first podcast of 2017! We took some time off over the holidays and are back in full swing with Gilles Bisson MPP, representing the riding of Timmins-James Bay. He is a member of the provincial New Democratic Party. Gilles is a veteran member of the Ontario legislature, who was first elected in 1990. He provided some amazing insight on how provincial politics has evolved during his tenure. We also chatted about the role of government, political divisiveness and how we've all got a lot more in common than we think. We were extremely happy to have Gilles join us and hope to have him on again in the future! In keeping true Beer and Bullshit fashion, we broke with our resolutions to drink less and indulged in some 10-point English IPA from Lake of Bays Brewing Company.

Best beer in the world? Hmm... Katy (@klwatts) is joined by new friends (who she met through the podcast!) Emily (@ercbrown) and Jamie (@jamiemasse) to drink some mostly old beers. Show Notes: Does anyone even care about episodes numbers? Yeah, the dry hopping was a fail. Halo Brewery is a Toronto-area brewery that opened in May by three homebrewers. I can't identify with the 0-80 mentality at all (/sarcasm). I have a real hard time associating beer flavours with other descriptors. I'm getting better over time, but it's a real skill to be able to describe a flavour your tasting. What is this mystery bottle of beer? Become a Patreon of 613BeerCast and listen in to find out! How do I get 613BeerCast done? Well... I carve out time whenever I have it (cough). Business for Punks - can't say I recommend all of their business advice, but it's an interesting insight into how BrewDog runs their business. American IPA vs. English IPA beer style. Equity for Punks USA! Dave Price is Dr. Claw. Cloying is 100% a word. Emily and Jamie are cloying in their compliments of 613BeerCast. Beau's has their own escape room at Escape Manor! The case against wax seals. Foreign Extra Stout beer style. What's in a cask? Katy doesn't like spending her money on bleh. "The best beer in the world" What is a Trappist beer? Most of my taste references are candy influenced. Just listen to everything Charles Bamforth says, he's so knowledgeable.

Season 1, Episode 13 - This week on 4B: English IPA, English porter, and two homebrews with issues. Welcome to lucky episode thirteen of Four Brewers! This week is a bit all over the place for us. We kick the show off with what is probably one of the most tradition and easy to find IPAs on the market, Samuel Smith’s India Ale. India Pale Ale tends to be a very regional beer, meaning that it can vary widely in translation. East coast IPA, for example, is thought of as being more balanced and malt forward, and greatly influenced by traditional English IPA. Keeping with that logic, one would think that this IPA from Samuel Smith’s would be a malt bomb of an IPA. But that’s actually not the case here. While this IPA is indeed quite balanced as far as IPA goes, the malt backbone is actually quite pleasant and not very dominating. It has a nice bitterness and comes off quite refreshing. It’s totally worth trying out sometime, and will give you an idea of what an actual English IPA is all about. Samuel Smith Beers Sticking with Samuel Smith’s, we dive into their Taddy Porter. This is again, another fine example of a traditional English beer. The beer style “porter” has been around for quite a long time, and many American craft breweries have their own delicious takes on it. It’s nice to get back to the roots of the style, and Taddy Porter is a great example, among many others. Feature: Homebrew – Jason’s SMaSH IPA, and Nagel’s “Yellow Submarine” Saison. Jason finally brewed a beer for the show! Awesome! Keeping things simple, he decided to go with a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) beer. The base malt in this brew is all 2 row base malt, and the hops are Mosaic. Jason talks about his first time fermenting beer in a bucket, we get off on the wonderful grapefruit aroma, and analyze an off-aroma present in the beer. Greg Nagel’s Yellow Submarine Saison Next up is Greg‘s “Yellow Submarine” saison. Greg talks about his not-so-efficient brewday (we’ve all been there), as we tangent into politics and other nonsense.
