In this episode I talk more about what influenced my journey into writing. It also features poems by nonagenarian Jean Harding, a member of both Bridgend Writers' Circle and Bridgend u3a. I also read one of my early science fiction stories 'Adamstown' brought about by one of my favourite quotes from Miles Davis in reference on how to playing jazz: “Don't play what's there, play what's not there.” This can easily be translated to writing as “Don't write what you see, write what you don't see!”

(Dod).

Brenna guests to share her research on three of Lexington's Black enclaves, founded by formerly enslaved persons after the Civil War. In this episode, she discusses Davis Bottom (est. 1865; redeveloped in 2010s to make way for Newtown Pike road expansion), Adamstown (est. 1870; razed in early 1900s to make way for Memorial Colosseum), and Brucetown (est. 1865; still exists today). Brenna highlights the history we know, and points out that much of the history of these hamlets and their residents are lost to time, despite their vital contributions to Lexington's development and growth pre- and post-Civil War.

Colm O'Gorman is an author, activist, cook, charity founder, and lots more. Colm is one of Ireland's best known activists. Colm O'Gorman was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1966. He's from a farming background and spent the first eleven years of his life in the village of Adamstown before moving with his family to Wexford town in 1977. He left Wexford in 1984, living in Dublin for a few years before moving to London in 1986. He has had an impressive list of jobs and careers to date. He previously worked as a waiter, a barman, a charity fundraiser, a hair salon manager, a security guard, a coat check attendant, a radio dj, a cook, a restaurant manager and a mini cab driver before he finally decided to get serious about a single career and train as a therapist. He qualified as a physical therapist in 1994, and as a psychotherapist in 1996. He worked initially in private practice before founding the organisation One in Four in 1999 to support women and men who have experienced sexual violence. In 1998 he launched a legal case against the Roman Catholic Church as a result of his experiences of sexual abuse at the hands of one of its priests when he was a teenager. He went on to sue the Bishop of his home diocese of Ferns and the Pope. In 2002 he took part in a BBC documentary, which told the story of his battle with the Roman Catholic Church. The film, Suing the Pope aired in March 2002 and resulted in the resignation of the Bishop of Ferns Dr Brendan Comiskey. Colm returned to live in Ireland in 2003 to found One in Four Ireland. In his role as Director of One in Four, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Ferns Inquiry, the first state investigation into clerical sexual abuse in Ireland. The inquiry investigated the management of child sexual abuse concerns and allegations by the Catholic Church and by State authorities. In 2005 he helped to establish Gorey Educate Together National School ; a multi-denominational, co-educational, child centred and democratically run primary school. Colm is a regular media commentator and contributor, has written extensively on social justice and human rights. He has made a number of documentary films, including the BAFTA awarding winning A Family Affair (2000), Suing the Pope (2002) and Sex Crimes and The Vatican which he presented for BBC Panorama in 2006. Colm's work as a human rights defender is driven by a deep commitment to human rights and social justice and an abiding belief in the power of advocacy and activism, which challenges all of us to use our individual and collective voices to demand change where it is most needed. Colm served briefly as a member of Seanan Éireann, the upper house of the Irish parliament. He unsuccessfully contested the 2007 Irish general election and discovered that electoral politics was most definitely not his thing. In February 2008, Colm was appointed Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland. His first book Beyond Belief was published by Hodder & Stoughton. It became an instant bestseller, reaching number one in the Irish non-fiction bestsellers list within a week of its publication. Colm lives in County Wexford with his family.

In my first podcast, I briefly mentioned my involvement with Freedom Fighter, a rock band comprising of six young men, all of whom suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. In this podcast I’m going to start with a song we opened every set with, as it reflects, the dreams and inspirations of many young people, that of becoming a Rockstar! Then I'm going to pay tribute to a lady who writes the most amazing poetry, as well as penning some brilliant short stories. It’s 1974 in the suburb of Hamilton, which is about four kilometres from the heart of Newcastle. The area is an idyllic backdrop for an Australian childhood, surrounded by incredible natural beauty, with lush bushland and sprawling beaches. Many of the working class families in the suburbs of Newcastle are Catholic. Catholics belong to a parish, which has a church and a local priest. The Catholic schools in the area promise to propel students into the professional classes. Maybe they’d grow up and become a teacher or a nurse or a journalist or even a priest themselves. The three main schools in this particular diocese are Marist Brothers Hamilton, St Pius X in the nearby suburb of Adamstown and Marist Brothers Maitland. Two of these schools are, as their names suggest, run by Marist Brothers, who are an international religious community of men, dedicated to educating young people. But on October 8, 1974, something unimaginable happened. A boy named Andrew Nash dies. It will take decades for his family to discover what happened to him. In this episode, Jessie speaks with Suzanne Smith. Suzanne is a six-time Walkley Award winning investigative reporter, whose 27-year career in journalism has included senior editorial roles at the ABC, including on Foreign Correspondent, Background Briefing, Lateline and ABC News. During her time at the ABC she reported on the cover-up of clerical abuse, which helped to trigger the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Australia. Suzanne’s new book, Altar Boys, is a powerful expose of widespread and organised clerical abuse of children in one Australian city, and how the cover-up in the Catholic Church extended from parish priests to every echelon of the organisation. An incomplete version of Graining In humbly got the opportunity to speak with brewing legend, Carol Stoudt. Carol is in the process of retiring, but she spent the last 33 years as brewmaster of Stoudt's Brewing Company in Adamstown, PA. While the conclusion of a brewing career longer than either Noah or Matt has been alive would be completely applaudable in its own right, when she founded her brewery (an extension of her family steakhouse), Carol Stoudt became the first female brewmaster/head brewer/brewer-owner/etc. in the United States since prohibition began. Since then, she made Stoudt's one of greater Philadelphia's most important breweries, continually stayed true to the core brewing principles that made her fall in love with beer in the first place, and simultaneously inspired untold numbers of women to join the craft brewing community. In addition to her story, she talks with Noah about how much the beer industry has (and will continue to) changed, her love of lagers, and why glitter beer really is one of brewing's greatest disgraces. Please enjoy this conversation - Noah had no right having - with likely the most influential woman to ever touch a mash paddle.Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill
My homily for the 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) as preached during the 8 am Mass in St Columba's Church, Adamstown. The readings were Isaiah 58:7-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16. "We are called to a be light to the nation, and the only way we can do that is by following what we hear in Scripture about how we are called to act and to be. Be bold and be brave in following Jesus, and don't allow the light to diminished by the tubs of fear or complacency."
She was the first female brewmaster since prohibition. Carol Stoudt is preparing to retire and close her brewery in Adamstown, PA. KYW Newsradio's Beer And Booze Broz John McDevitt and Paul Kurtz speak with the craft beer pioneer about her career and what she plans for the future.
Craft Brew News - 2/6/2020(Courtesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)Pennsylvania’s Stoudt’s Brewing Company to CloseStoudts Brewing Company will cease operations at the end of the winter, as founder Carol Stoudt retires after 33 years, according to a press release.Founder Carol Stoudt said in the release “This was a difficult decision to make,”. “But we’re not moving enough volume to justify the expense of keeping the brewery open. However, we’re not closing the doors to any business opportunities that could help the Stoudts brand live on.”Stoudt founded the brewery in 1987 and was the first female brewmaster after Prohibition was repealed in 1933, according to the release. The Stoudts complex in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, also houses a restaurant, event space, bakery, market and antiques store, which will remain open after brewing operations cease. The company said it will begin scaling down production immediately and wrap up at the start of spring, as it prepares to sell the brewery.Stoudts produced 2,400 barrels of beer in 2018, the most recent year in which production data is available from the Brewers Association.California ABC Suspends San Francisco-Based Seven Stills’ LicenseThe California Bureau of Alcoholic Beverage Control has suspended San Francisco-based Seven Stills Brewery and Distillery’s operating license for 90 days for violating the state’s tied house laws, according to a report from SFGate.com.The purpose of tied-house laws is to maintain separation between the three tiers of alcoholic distribution — producers (like breweries), wholesalers and retailers like bars and stores — and to level the playing field for smaller craft breweries competing in the market. The laws prohibit companies, particularly large ones, from offering gifts of value, or straight-up monetary payments to retailers, in exchange for selling their beer. The suspension will begin in March, which the company opted for in lieu of a fine, which could have topped $600,000, based on $10,000 for each of its 60 infractions. In anticipation of the financial hit that will come from suspending operations, Seven Stills has closed its taproom in the Mission District and its Egbert production facility. The company’s new taproom in the city’s Mission Bay district will remain open during the suspension, but its brewing facility is not functional and the company does not have the financing to finish it, according to SFGate.Colorado Pilot Program Repurposes CO2 From Fermentation for Use in Cannabis GrowthWith the help of technology from Austin, Texas-based Earthly Labs, the Denver Beer Company is launching a program to share the excess carbon dioxide produced during fermentation with the Clinic, a cannabis company, to stimulate marijuana plant growth. The exchange is part of the Carbon Dioxide Reuse Pilot Project, a pilot program announced by Gov. Jared Polis last week and spearheaded by the Colorado’s Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).Denver Beer Company estimates it can capture 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, which would normally be released into the atmosphere from tanks through vents. Instead, the Clinic can use the gas to grow plants in a shorter time and with better yields. The Clinic had been purchasing carbon dioxide from power plants and trucking it across the state, according to the release.Brewers’ uses for carbon dioxide run the gamut from carbonation for packaging to cleaning out pipes to serving beer in their taprooms. The gas costs anywhere from 26 cents to $2 per pound, George said. If a brewery captures 100,000 pounds for reuse, it can save $24,000 to $200,000 annually on gas costs.Super Bowl LIV (54) Ushers in First Major Beer Occasion of 2020Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Miami marks the first major beer-drinking occasion of 2020.In 2019, U.S. consumers spent $1.2 billion on beer at off-premise retailers in the two weeks leading up to the game between the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots, according to market research firm Nielsen. The Super Bowl is unquestionably a beer dominated occasion. Beer sales last year nearly doubled those of wine ($652 million) and spirits ($568 million) in the same period.During the two weeks leading up to last year’s game, hard seltzer dollar sales hit $21.9 million, an increase of nearly 250% over the same period in 2018, according to Nielsen. As consumers stock up for their celebrations, the largest beer manufacturers are spending millions of dollars on ads to capture viewers’ attention during breaks in the on-field action. Those spots come at a premium, with Fox charging at least $5 million for 30 seconds of airtime, with some spots going for $5.6 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.A-B’s four nationally aired spots are star-studded, with appearances from celebrities and athletes such as Post Malone, Jimmy Fallon, John Cena, Usain Bolt, Brooks Koepka and Kerri Walsh Jennings.A-B engaged consumers in the selection process for this year’s Bud Light commercial, allowing drinkers to vote on social media for a Bud Light Seltzer commercial featuring rapper Post Malone. Both take place inside the musician’s mind as he encounters Bud Light Seltzer for the first time. In one spot, Post Malone internal monologue argues on whether to buy a case of Bud Light beer or a case of the new seltzer.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? It’s been a long-time coming. We finally make it out to record at one of Pennsylvania’s oldest and best known craft breweries, Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown. With founder, brewer and pioneer Carol Stoudt, along with Event Coordinator and master-of-breads-and-cheese, Elizabeth Stoudt, we talked about the long and storied history of this landmark establishment. We also discussed the importance of the seemingly fading concept of flagship beers and “Flagship February”, an initiative to celebrate and rekindle the love for mainstay brews. Plus, a sneak peek at upcoming beers, packaging, and other plans for the Stoudts complex. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My Beer. And Steph talked about the English Bitter and ESB styles in Know Your Beers. All while enjoying a buffet of beautiful brews. Want to hear Carol Stoudt talk about mowing down emus with a machine gun?
