With Homebrew Conference right around the corner (June 22-24 in San Diego), we thought we needed another episode focusing on homebrewing. This week, Julia Herz executive director of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA)—the nation's largest hobbyist not-for-profit organization for homebrewers and fermented beverages joins the show. Julia gives us a little history on The Homebrew Conference, and how it's grown over the years. There are some exciting sessions and topics this year, including a Hot Sauce making session (hey, it's fermentation). We also dive into a conversation on new homebrewing technology (you can do an entire brew day from an app on your phone), and new styles that homebrewers are tackling. It wouldn't be Beer Me if we didn't leave you with a little how-to to start your homebrew journey! Take a look at American Homebrewers Association website, engage with your local clubs (shout out to the DC Homebrewers Club), or simply grab a 1-gallon kit and get brewing! Nearly all of the stories you read and interviews you hear from Good Beer Hunting include professionals in beer. But one of the wonderful things about this beverage is you don't have to be a working pro to make and enjoy it. And like other areas of the industry, there's a growing collection of people who've embraced homebrewing that bring demographics and backgrounds historically underrepresented in beer. That's a space we're exploring in this episode thanks to Ray Ricky Rivera, the journalist behind one of Good Beer Hunting's Next Germination stories—a series produced in partnership with Guinness—that focused on the SoCal Cerveceros, the largest Latino homebrew club in the country that's also been dubbed “one of the most important homebrew clubs in the world.” As a member of the group, Ray brings a unique perspective to his story you can find on goodbeerhunting.com and one you'll get a sense of here. Instead of recapping what was written, however, we're going to share with you three acts to represent growth and change in homebrewing, with a highlight of what's next. First, you'll hear from Julia Herz, executive director of the American Homebrewers Association, to learn about the hobby and priorities for the organization. Then, Ray will take us to a SoCal hangout, where we'll meet a couple members, learn about their involvement, and listen in during their brew day. Lastly, we'll catch up with Ray to hear about the ongoing impact SoCal Cerveceros has on its members and local beer lovers in California. This is the audio companion to “‘I See You' — The Evolution of SoCal Cerveceros,” stories for our Next Germination series, produced in partnership with Guinness. First, we visit with Julia Herz of the American Homebrewers Association.
This conversation is all about stories. Tales of recent history and childhood memories. Recalling inspiration from others and happy accidents. Joining me to stroll down memory lane is Julia Herz, someone who has provided plenty of people in and around beer their own mental souvenirs to cherish. Julia is a longtime fixture in beer, having served for years as a de facto “face” of craft brewers' trade organization, the Brewers Association. She was part of a round of COVID-influened layoffs in 2020, but is now back with the Brewers Association's sister group, the American Homebrewers Association, serving as executive director. Julia's connections, relationships, and impact runs deep in American beer, and you can get a good sense of that as well as reflections on a temporary career change in Good Beer Hunting podcast episode 286 which features a conversation with Julia and GBH colleague, Beth Demmon. But in this episode, you'll hear Julia talk about her own appreciation for homebrewing, some of what her organization is up to, and share stories of the many things that led her to where she is today. Including a chance encounter with the Homebrewers Assoication's original founder that feels uniquely perfect to her journey.

Beer styles are a bit polarizing. They are sometimes viewed as rules brewers ought to follow or information reserved for the elite. In this presentation, Jeremy and Julia will share that styles are meant to serve, not separate, and that everyone should develop their own sense of beer style. Once upon a time Jeremy Storton didn't know the difference between an ESB and an IPA. Now he's an Advanced Cicerone®, IBD certified brewer, BJCP judge, beer educator, freelance mixed-media content producer, and an award-winning beer writer and host of the Good Beer Matters Podcast. He recently moved back to the Northwest to thoroughly research post outdoor activity beer pairings. If you think about it, all the beer you enjoy at breweries around the world today began as homebrew. In a literal sense, often times the brewer began as a home brewer. But in a larger sense, all beer used to be brewed at home long before it became a global commodity. This got me thinking, what role does home brewing play now in our modern society? My next guest is an expert and a leader who will help get your boil kettles fired up. Julia Herz is only a couple months into her new role as Executive Director of the American Homebrewers Association (https://www.homebrewersassociation.org), but she's long been a craft beer voice and advocate with deep experience in the realm of food and beer pairing. As the former Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, she developed a library of resources to help brewers understand the nexus of beer and food, and to increase the number and quality of occasions for beer drinking. Now, in her new role as head of the world's largest association of homebrewers, she starts her next chapter thinking about how homebrewing, and craft beer in general, can mean more to even more people than it has in the past. In this episode, Herz discusses: The immediate challenges to homebrewing and long term goals Connecting the professional and amateur sides of brewing Thinking about flavor in a way that's externally relatable Understanding the food flavor triangle Pairing strategies with bridges, links, hooks, and echoes Developing a mind-palate connection and articulating a language of flavor Overcoming flavor bias Making brewing more relevant to those from all walks of like And more. “So many brewers are world-class sensory experts when it comes to beer, but I still want to see brewers come along and understand how to describe flavor and what their beers go with,” says Herz. “Winemakers do know how to do that. Winemakers are in that arena, day in and day out.” *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): What if you could chill your beer with a more efficient chiller? Julia Herz has been a notable figure in craft beer for nearly two decades. Much of that time was spent as the face of the Craft Beer Program at the Brewers Association. Her diminutive stature contrasts with her comparatively monumental influence in the industry: in that role, she was a familiar face at beer festivals and conferences like the Craft Brewers Conference and BeerNow Conference; she helped helm online publications like CraftBeer.com; and even wrote a 2015 book with Gwen Conley titled Beer Pairing: The Essential Guide from the Pairing Pros. Like the rest of us, Herz was caught off guard by the arrival of COVID-19, and again when she and two dozen other BA employees were laid off in June. But rather than stagnate in what she calls “career, interrupted,” she hit the road to both coasts on a series of Vision Quests, visiting breweries across the United States in a safe (and socially distanced) way. By navigating that unexpected hard left turn in her work, Herz embarked on a brand-new journey to consult, mentor, and educate through her new LLC, HerzMuses Enterprises. By leveraging her massive network of brewery owners and employees, she says her goal is to “teach and inspire,” as well as provide solutions to brands and causes that move her. From her behind-the-scenes perspective, she’s laying the foundation of her new venture with relationships in mind, and for the first time, on her own. I had the chance to sit down with Julia—masked, outside, and over a pint—at Second Chance Beer Company in San Diego to get the inside scoop on her state of mind before recording this podcast episode. We talked about her past and future, her work as part of a national team and now as a solo artist, what it’s like to be on the ground during COVID, and how these Vision Quests have shaped her in surprising ways. I got to know what drives her, what changed her, and what she has planned next. This is Julia Herz. Listen in.
Craft beer evangelist Julia Herz discusses breweries’ needs during the pandemic, how the beer industry can become more inclusive, and what’s next for her following her departure from the Brewers Association. Plus, the Brewbound team breaks down recent beer business news, including winter hibernations announced at breweries in Illinois and Massachusetts, more wholesaler moves in the Midwest and new products in the pipeline at Guinness and Boston Beer.
Julia Herz has shaped the rise of American craft beer for over 10 years, primarily as the program director of the Brewers Association. In episode 39, this author/speaker/educator/consultant talks about how the beer scene has changed since she joined the association and how being laid off in June has shifted her focus, prompting a vision quest. After the interview is the Afterparty, when I talk about joining the Hopped Up Network..Background music: “Encounter with a Mech Patrol Unit” by Ibrahim, “Roundabout” by The Jaguars, and “Uh Oh” by The Imps.Photo: Brewers Association
Greg Avola chats with Julia Herz, an educator, author, and speaker who has been a voice and advocate on behalf of small and independent US craft breweries. After a COVID economy lay-off Julia is positioned to fuel a meaningful cause or brand and empower those who are looking for a strategic and authentic leader to nurture loyalty and create demand. This segment was recorded as a live broadcast on Untappd TV on August 18, 2020. To watch the full original version with video, visit untappd.tv!
Julia Herz, formerly Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, talks about the BA’s early days, how it transformed into a massive organization, and what the future for her looks like.
Learning to pair beer with food is a lifelong pursuit that is all about the journey, not the destination. A great pairing has a way of elevating the experience, the discussion, the memory, and with some luck, the relationships with those around us. I’ve spent a fair amount of time learning, thinking about and experimenting with food and beer pairing. Not everything works. Sometimes we inadvertently create a zing-boom-dud effect. That’s when we need help learning what went wrong and what to do about it. My next guest is one of the leaders in the food and beer pairing vanguard. And she wants to help you create better pairings. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeremy-storton/message

Many independent craft brewers in the US display the Independent Craft Brewer Seal on their packaging and in their taprooms. The seal gives beer fans an easy way to spot true, independent craft brews and breweries. Recently the seal’s creators, The Brewers Association, added the Independent Craft Brewer Support Seal so retailers, vendors and event organizers can also show their support of independent craft beer. Julia Herz is the Director of the Brewer Association’s Craft Beer Program and she joined us to discuss the motivation behind the Independent Craft Brewer Support Seal. ************************************* Supporter Seal Resources and Craft Brewery Database Search: https://www.brewersassociation.org/independent-craft-brewer-seal/supporters/ The Brewers Association: https://www.brewersassociation.org/ Music by Moss: https://soundcloud.com/mossrva
Did you know that 98 percent of today’s 6,000+ (and counting) U.S. breweries are independent, but make up only 13 percent of the beer market by volume? Most don’t. But with the recently-introduced Independent Craft Brewer Seal, folks like Julia Herz are helping you know when you’re drinking a true craft beer. Julia is the Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, and a driving force behind their “That’s Independence You’re Tasting” campaign. As large macrobreweries continue to buy up small, independent breweries, it’s becoming increasingly harder to tell when you’re drinking a craft beer, or a simply something that simply looks like a craft brew. In this final episode from the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Julia shares all the details behind the seal, what it stands for, and why it’s more important than ever for beer drinkers to #SeekTheSeal and support independent craft breweries. After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!

11-21-17 We will have a mead celebrity on with this tonight! Peter Bakulic will be coming on the show to talk mead with us. Pete was introduced to winemaking at an early age as part of his family's Croatian roots in winemaking. He traveled to Lodi, California to visit family friends who were Zinfandel winegrowers and became familiar with the winemaking process. He became interested in making mead in the late seventies about the same time he was learning about brewing. After his first taste of mead Pete was hooked and took to mead making with a passion. Having majored in microbiology and minored in chemistry he was always interested in the role of yeast during fermentation and how it affects the mead, wine and beer making process, and also worked as a clinical laboratory technologist. Pete is an active judge in local mead, wine and beer competitions and has been on several different sensory panels responsible for recommending wine and spirits for corporate and private collections in downtown Los Angeles. He presents meadmaking classes to local Home Brew Clubs and Bee Keepers who are interested in learning about the process of making mead, and how to evaluate and taste mead. Pete performs sensory evaluation of commercially produced mead on a contract basis for meaderies around the world. In several cases his recommendations have lead to improvements that have garnered medals in various international mead competitions. He is the current President of the Mazer Cup International Mead Competition which is the lar gest mead only competition in the world. Pete also founded the Home Meadmaker competition at the International Mead Festival in 2006 along with David Myers and Julia Herz of Redstone Meadery. He has worked closely as an administrative partner with Vicky Rowe on GotMead.Com since 2004, where he is known as Oskaar. Pete worked with Ken Schramm, Gordon Strong, Julia Herz and other members of the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) to define the guidelines for the current Mead Judge Certification Program and contributed articles for inclusion in the course study guide. He is also a regular presenter in the Mead Courses offered by the Honey and Pollination Center at the Robert Mondavi Institute on the U.C. Davis Campus.
