On this Friday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Sid ramps up the hype heading into one of the holiest weeks of the year for Jews worldwide, the celebration of Passover and the telling of Moses' heroics, leading the Israelites out of slavery under the Pharaoh in Egypt to the promised land of Israel after 40 days and nights trekking through the dessert. To proud Jews, the Passover Seder is more than just a meal, but a guide to the continued survival of the Jewish people. In other news of the day, House Republicans pass the budget framework for President Trump's "big, beautiful bill", the Supreme Court rules that the Trump administration must facilitate the return of a Maryland man that seemingly was mistakenly deported, the NYPD introduces its new "Quality of Life Division", and New York Governor Kathy Hochul is demanding that Long Island schools do away with their mascots and logos that reference Native Americans who formerly populated the greater Long Island area. Experience one of the greatest American choral works of all time, American composer Robert Nathaniel Dett's The Ordering of Moses, performed by hundreds of combined voices from the Fairfield County Chorale, Heritage Chorale of New Haven, and New Haven Chorale. From Music Director Perry So: “Finally after almost a century this great work is starting to receive its due. The Ordering of Moses was never forgotten – church choirs, community groups and others have kept the piece in our ears – but the first performance at Carnegie was only in 2014, and the British premiere in 2022. What remarkable sound worlds are contained in the piece: lush late-Romanticism with echoes of Wagner and Elgar, but as a context for the immediacy of the African-American spiritual that sounds stark and timeless. The sound of actual chains being pulled emanate from the orchestra against harmonies that dissolve into suggestions of near-Eastern scales. All in the service of the story and the emotion contained at the core of the work – a young Moses discovering his calling to lead his people out of slavery, perhaps the most eloquent musical cry against oppression in the American tradition.”

The Exodus story is still alive today - there is a spiritual Egypt and sons of Pharaoh. God is crying out: "Let My people go!" Many of us are still enslaved, but freedom can be a difficult choice. Israel wanted freedom, but also feared change, consequences, and unfulfillment. But today God is calling us to recognize our uncircumcision, repent, and walk humbly out of our Egypt, never looking back. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

The acclaimed painting Let My People Go by Aaron Douglas uses vibrant colors of lavender, green, and gold, along with traditional African imagery, to tell the biblical story of Moses and connect it with Black Americans’ struggle for freedom and justice. The painting portrays God’s appearance to Moses in a burning bush when he revealed that He’d seen the plight of the Israelites in Egypt. The artist uses a beam of light to symbolize God and His message, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). In Let My People Go, Moses kneels in obedient submission to God’s instructions, but the eye is drawn to the dark waves and horses trained for war surrounding him—reminding viewers of the struggles the Israelites would face as they left Egypt. But the beam of light shines brightly as a reminder that God would be with the Israelites in their struggle. The emotions evoked by the painting resonate because the struggle against injustice continues; many use their power to oppress men, women, and children around the world. As those suffering cry out for God to be “a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9), we can plead with God to respond to their cries for help. And, like Moses, we can be willing to act on behalf of the oppressed. How might you pray for oppressed people? How might you learn more about caring for those suffering injustice?

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today, we bring you a bonus episode of What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World. This episode features host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with ToI senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur. Last week, three women were arrested after distributing flyers with six hostages' faces in MK Yuli Edelstein's synagogue in Herzliya, including a picture of him as a Prisoner of Zion alongside and the famous “Let My People Go” slogan used to support the refuseniks in the Soviet Union before being allowed to emigrate to Israel in 1987. After a week of backlash to their arrests and his apparent support for them, Edelstein clarified that while he understands the hostage families' protests, he does “not forgive people who turn the hostages into currency to promote goals that have nothing to do with them.” At the same time, there already are efforts inside most — if not all — synagogues throughout Israel to release the hostages: the longstanding prayer for the release of hostages that is found in most standard prayerbooks. Rettig Gur and Borschel-Dan discuss the two sides' stances and question whether they are all that far apart on the issue of the hostages. The two then turn to the question of whether or not Israel is basically experiencing an undeclared, low-burn regional war after a week in which a ballistic missile from the Yemenite Houthis reached Tel Aviv, a drone from Iraq was downed over the Sea of Galilee, along with the “usual” rockets from Gaza and Lebanon. Rettig Gur argues that even if Israel isn't currently in a regional war, it's time for one, but with one specific target. And so this week we ask Haviv Rettig Gur, what matters now? Today, we discuss the healthiest ways to share our human vulnerabilities with expert Raleigh Sadler, Enneagram Type 6 (The MercyCast ) in a rich conversation on what vulnerability is and how hard it is to be vulnerable in relationships, especially when we've been burned or haven't known how to navigate sensitive terrain. Here you'll find tips for when to lean in, when to set some distance, and when rest is needed after a vulnerable event. We also specifically give tips for men seeking a culture of healthy vulnerability, since there are often extra layers of barriers here. Send us a textThe famous slogan "Let My People Go" became a rallying cry for Jews worldwide in the 1970s, advocating for the release of Soviet Jewry. However, as the Rebbe reminded us, the slogan's full meaning—"so that they may serve Me"—was often overlooked. This sermon explores the deeper significance of this missing line and the importance of spiritual liberation alongside physical freedom. Drawing parallels with Moshe Dayan's speech during the War of Attrition, the Rebbe emphasized that our strength lies not only in action but in unwavering faith that "G-d is with us," the ultimate source of courage and victory.Key Takeaways:Complete the Mission: Physical freedom is essential, but it is only complete when coupled with the ability to observe Torah and mitzvot.Spiritual Liberation: True freedom is achieved when Jews can live fully as Jews, celebrating traditions, and passing them on to future generations.Faith Over Fear: In the face of overwhelming challenges, the Jewish people have always drawn strength from the belief that G-d is with them. The Power of the Full Verse: Understanding and embracing the full context of Torah teachings strengthens our resolve and gives purpose to our actions.Support the Show.Got your own question for Rabbi Bernath? In this episode, Katie Koplin and Gretchen Ronnevik interview their friend Raleigh Sadler, who is the founder and executive director of "Let My People Go" which is a ministry that empowers churches to fight human trafficking, and reaching those most vulnerable. These guys have had a lot of laughter together at various conferences, and we start by talking about the weird humor that comes from working in such heavy, dark places. He wrote a book called "Vulnerable: Rethinking Human Trafficking" and how everyday, regular church goers can reach their most vulnerable neighbors--not by being a superhero, but by tapping into their own vulnerablity. He gives the old youth group illustration of standing up on a chair, and trying to pull someone up, and how much easier it is for them to pull us down. He invites us instead to step off of our chair, and be vulnerable in the low places. It's an interesting conversation on righteousness, holiness, vulnerability, and what it means to love our vulnerable neighbors.
