07/06/2026 Gospel Sermon on Luke 9 : 12 - 17 12 When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here." 13 But He said to them, "You give them something to eat." And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people." 14 For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of fifty." 15 And they did so, and made them all sit down. 16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 17 So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Although believers repeat the patterns of OT Israel, God's grace in Christ prevails.

Jesus, saying He was the Bread of Heaven, was no doubt a claim to Godhood. Upon hearing this, His opponents state, “We’ve known Jesus! We’ve known His parents, and we’ve known Jesus growing up, and - you know - if He was always God we thought there should've been some obvious signs that we apparently missed!” It’s hard. it’s a common response. To minimize. Explain away. Make less of. Jesus instead invites HIs hearers

The Bread of Heaven • 8-10-25 PM • Pastor Grant Garber
Everyone is going to eat something to be satisfied. In John 6, Jesus is pointing to a hunger that we all have, not a physical hunger but a soul-level hunger. How can we be filled? "I am the bread of life" - proclaims Jesus. Pastor Dan Rude explains what that means, why we need Jesus even to enjoy what we have, and how God the Father calls people to the Son.
When the Bible speaks about "bread", what might that include? In "The Bread of Heaven", Pastor John discusses how the Bible describes it as physical food, it is also described as something more profound - "For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world" (John 6:31 NKJV)Support the show
In this sermon, we explored how the manna God provided in Exodus 16 was more than just daily sustenance for Israel in the wilderness—it was a sign pointing forward to something far greater. Just as manna came down from heaven to meet Israel's physical need for survival, Jesus declares in John 6 that He is the true bread from heaven who satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger. The manna had to be gathered daily, reminding God's people of their dependence on Him; in the same way, Jesus invites us into daily dependence on His life-giving presence. While the Israelites who ate the manna eventually died, Jesus offers us something immeasurably better—Himself. Those who come to Him, the living bread, will never hunger or die spiritually. In Christ, we find not only provision for today but the promise of eternal life with Him.

Asking God for our “daily bread” is a petition for him to fill our physical and spiritual hunger. Fr. Mike breaks down this simple yet profound petition that reminds us of our reliance on God for all our needs. In this part of the Lord's prayer, we turn to God with childlike hearts, trusting that he will nourish us with all the appropriate material goods and, above all, with the Eucharist. Just like our bodies need food to function, our spirits also need nourishment. We know what to feed the body, how to give it rest and shelter, and care. But what about the care and feeding of your spirit? Jesus said this about Himself: I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did … but will live forever. Jesus Himself is the life-giving spirit-food our souls cannot live without. He offers peace and rest, shelter, and care…at a deeper spiritual level. And He enables us to live forever. We can offer this life-giving bread to all those suffering from spiritual starvation. Will you share Jesus, the bread of Heaven, today? Bible Reference: John 6:58 radio.hopewithgod.com

Jesus proclaimed that we must eat and drink of Him to have eternal life. But how could that possibly be? Addressing this often misunderstood and misapplied passage of Scripture, Alistair Begg explains that Jesus used physical descriptions to explain spiritual truths. Spiritual hunger—that deep-seated desire to make sense of existence—is universal. Only when we're united with Christ do we find the true food and drink that satisfies our deepest longings. All Jesus requires is that we know our need of Him and place our trust in His provision.
