Peter Gorschlüter, director of Museum Folkwang in Essen since 2018, is one of the youngest museum directors in Germany. Peter talks his early, formative years, growing up in a household with an affinity for culture. He talks his almost becoming a gallerist and how unexpectedly then the course was set to pursue a career as curator - and later director - of art institutions. He talks in depth about his working in different international art institutions through the years with a focus on developing an approach for Museum Folkwang that honors the history of the museum, as well as opens up new ways in corresponding with the time and the needs of the people. The demuseumization of the museum is an essential question for him and he would like to transfer the Folkwang (= hall of the people) vision of the museum founder Karl Ernst Osthaus into our times, thinking across genres and and epochs. Therefore he considers participation, transparency and putting people in the center of attention to be very important tasks. He sees himself not only as museum manager, but also as someone who intitiates content impulses. Peter studied Theater, Film and Television Studies, also German Studies and Philosophy in Cologne. He started organizing exhibitions early on, worked at a gallery for contemporary art and then was invited to the post of curator and research assistant at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. He spent some important years being chief curator of Tate Liverpool where he headed the Collection and Exhibitions Department. In 2010 he was co-curator of the Liverpool Biennial. After that he was appointed as deputy director of the Museum für Moderne Kunst MMK in Frankfurt a.M. from 2010 to 2018. Since 2018 he works as director of the internationally acclaimed Museum Folkwang in Essen. In 2021 Peter was awarded an honorary professorship for "Art and the Public" at the Folkwang University of the Arts. 35 min., recorded Sep. 19, 2022, language english. Professional singer, actor, dancer, voice-over recording artist Philippe Hall joins Alexa on Singing Teachers' Talk this week to discuss emotional layering, the most neglected skill in vocal training. How do you add those emotional layers into your voice and how do you teach others to do so? Listen in and find out. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you're smiling your friend can hear that even on the other side of the phone, and when you're miserable, they can hear it and ask what's wrong. Perfect pitch singing is not necessarily going to hit you emotionally. It's some of the breaks in the voice that can create and evoke that emotive response. Philippe wants singers and teachers to know that he wasn't good at the beginning, The teaching he was getting was just “try emoting more”, he was hearing things that don't actually tell you how to do it. That's why he thinks a good vocal coach is so important. The real purpose of technical skills is to allow you to be free to layer your singing with emotion. Your true power is your uniqueness and your ability to communicate emotionally. Your voice can be part of your identity even while playing a role. One of the fourteen layering techniques Philippe teaches is asking yourself the question “who is singing, who is sending this message”. The answer will always be “I am” but it's not limited to you. It can be you being anything you want.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘Perfect pitch and perfect technique does not equal singing success' ‘You'd rather be making a performer who is making you feel something' ‘It's sincere, emotional communication' ‘The brain doesn't need truth, it just needs detail'   SHOW RESOURCES   BAST Community Discount Offer Link (expires 14th November 2021): https://www.singingrevealed.com/bast_special_offer_emotional_layering Alexa's Performance Choice: Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music performed by Judi Dench on a 1996 daytime talk show with Alan Titchmarsh: Judi Dench - Send In the Clowns, 1996 Philippe's Performance Choice: I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables film 2012 performed by Anne Hathaway: Les Misérables (2012) - I Dreamed A Dream Scene (1/10) | Movieclips How to Nurture a Singer's Authentic Voice: An interview with Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin: https://www.basttraining.com/how-to-nurture-a-singers-authentic-voice Dr Paul Ekman: https://www.paulekman.com Singing and Teaching Singing by Janice L Chapman (3rd Edition) Pamela Davis; contributing author to Singing and Teaching Singing by Janice L Chapman (3rd Edition) ‘To Be or Not to Be' Sketch; Shakespeare Live! By way of a sculptural, artistic access to the material of dance, Hoffmann composes movements like picture sequences. A precise language of forms compresses the content of her solo choreographies. Whereas, in Bretter she exposes herself to a body extension of extreme dimensions and shifts of focus, in Steine she wrestles with centrifugal and gravitational forces. Intensionally she used the sounds of the material as a musical composition. Both works, created in 1980, have been fully documented on video. From a contemporary perspective on these works, Hoffmann elaborates the essence of the dance pieces through a specific selection of video stills in the exhibition; in the choreographic transformation, the artist compresses and reinterprets the iconographic and semantic readability of these works in an image plate. Short Biography The dancer, choreographer and director Reinhild Hoffmann (*1943 in Sorau/Silesia) received her training from Eleonore Härdle-Munz in Karlsruhe and from Kurt Joos at Folkwang University in Essen. From 1978 till 1986 she directed the Bremer Tanz Theater, for the first three years in co-direction with Gerhard Bohner. Thanks to their aesthetic lucidity, Hoffmann’s pieces developed in Bremen and afterwards at Schauspielhaus Bochum made a contribution to the international recognition of German dance theater.
