Einfach nach ‘On the Way to New Work' suchen und abonnieren, um keine Folge zu verpassen. Christoph und Michael veröffentlichen immer montags um 6:00 Uhr und im Jubiläums-Monat (#6JahreOTWTNW) immer auch am Donnerstag um 6.00 Uhr.

I'm delighted to speak with Dr Matt Hoffmann in this episode. Matt is Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. He is primarily interested in examining the nature and benefits of high-quality peer athlete mentoring relationships. Relatedly, he investigates how athletes exhibit effective leadership behaviours, including the ways in which leadership is often distributed among team members. Additional interests include the home (dis)advantage phenomenon (particularly in ice hockey), coaching in Masters athletics and the psychosocial experiences of Masters athletes. Matt and I discuss a paper he wrote with Dr Jeemin Kim entitled ‘Personality, social status and willingness to mentor teammates among NCAA athletes' which investigates why athletes are inclined to mentor teammates examining whether personality and social status predicted athletes' willingness to provide mentorship.

Nina Wachsman and Martin EdwardsShow NotesWe talked to two more of the Agatha Nominees for this episode.First, we talked with Nina Wachsmann who is nominated for a Best First Novel for her bookThe Gallery of Beauties (Level Best Books) In the city that invented the concept of the ‘Ghetto,'it is surprising to learn that the Jews lived separately but not isolated from the culture aroundthem in the seventeenth century. Rabbis were not only leaders in the Jewish community, butscholars, mathematicians, statesmen and playwrights who were well known and respected inVenetian society and throughout Europe. The music, art and innovative foods which filled thecity, filtered into the Ghetto, finding its way into synagogues and homes. In a salon-like discussion with trustee David Sable, Nina Wachsman will bring to life this unusualcity and its unusually modern Jews, from her research for her novel of historical suspense, TheGallery of Beauties. We then talked with Martin Edwards who is nominated for Best Non-Fiction for his bookThe Life of Crime: Detecting the History of Mysteries and Their Creators (Harper Collins)In the first major history of crime fiction in 50 years, The Life of Crime: Detecting the History ofMysteries and Their Creators traces the evolution of the genre from the 18th century to thepresent, offering brand-new perspective on the world's most popular form of fiction.Author Martin Edwards is a multi-award-winning crime novelist, the president of the DetectionClub, archivist of the Crime Writers' Association and series consultant to the British Library'shighly successful series of crime classics, and therefore uniquely qualified to write this book. Hehas been a widely respected genre commentator for more than 30 years, winning the CWADiamond Dagger for making a significant contribution to crime writing in 2020, when he alsocompiled and published Howdunit: A Masterclass in Crime Writing by Members of the DetectionClub and the novel Mortmain Hall. His critically acclaimed The Golden Age of Murder (CollinsCrime Club, 2015) was a landmark study of detective fiction between the wars. The Life of Crime is the result of a lifetime of reading and enjoying all types of crime fiction, oldand new, from around the world. In what will surely be regarded as his magnum opus, MartinEdwards has thrown himself undaunted into the breadth and complexity of the genre to write anauthoritative—and enjoyable—study of its development and evolution. With crime fiction beingread more widely than ever around the world, and with individual authors increasingly thesubject of extensive academic study, his expert distillation of more than two centuries ofextraordinary books and authors—from the tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann to the novels of PatriciaCornwell—into one coherent history is an extraordinary feat and makes for a compelling listen.TRIVIALast week's question was:Author Harlan Coben made a deal with whom in 2016 to adapt 14 of his novels into film?a. My guest again this week is Sunny Stalter-Pace whose fascinating new book is titled: Imitation Artist — Gertrude Hoffmann's Life in Vaudeville and Dance. Choreographer, producer, director, and dancing star, Gertrude Hoffmann was a close colleague and key collaborator with neatly all the legendary figures of early Broadway including Florenz Ziegfeld, Oscar Hammerstein I, the Shubert Brothers, and George M. Cohan. But, unfortunately Gertrude Hoffmann has been left out of most of the history books, at least until this book came out. On the last episode Sunny shared the story of Hoffmann's journey from teenage dancing star in San Francisco, to her marriage to arranger and composer Max Hoffmann, and her early success in the roof garden theaters of New York where she become the first woman to receive billing for choreographing a Broadway musical. As we left off, Gertrude's star was rising and she was capitalizing on her skill for mimicry by doing impressions the greatest stars of her day, both female and male, and sometimes impersonating them in the same show with those stars. But it was her next venture that makes her one of the most famous women in America when she takes on the role of “Salome” and performs her scandalous dance of the seven veils. That's where we pick up our conversation today. As you will hear, following this “succès de scandale,” Gertrude Hoffman's amazing career will include introducing the dances of the famed Ballet Russe to America (without their permission!), becoming a headlining vaudeville star, creating her own troupe of dancers —The Gertrude Hoffmann Girls — who become an international sensation, as well as starring in and/or choreographing a string of hit 1920's Broadway musicals that include From Broadway to Paris, Artists & Models, A Night in Paris, and A Night In Spain. And as Sunny Stalter-Pace tells us her one of her legacies is to demonstrate that women were involved in the creation of the Broadway musical from the very beginning. My guest this week is Sunny Stalter-Pace whose wonderful new book is titled: Imitation Artist — Gertrude Hoffmann's Life in Vaudeville and Dance. And I am happy to say that this book covers her life on Broadway as well. As you will hear Gertrude Hoffmann is another of those dynamic women who played key roles in the invention of the Broadway Musical but unfortunately have mostly fallen out of the history books, and are nearly forgotten today. Not only was she a scandalous and transgressive Broadway dancing star, she was also a producer, writer, director, and the first woman to choreograph a Broadway show — or at least the first to be credited for doing so. Her world-famous troop of Gertrude Hoffman Girls established a template for Broadway dance ensembles that is still very much with us today. Beyond Broadway her influence and innovations extend into the worlds of Ballet, Night Clubs, Vaudeville, and Modern Dance. In this episode Sunny shares with us how Gertrude Hoffmann grew up in the vibrant theatrical world of late 19th Century San Francisco, and became a noted performer there while still in her teens. Soon after, she joined a traveling show that takes her to NYC and met her soon to be husband — music director and composer, Max Hoffman, who goes on to compose music for 12 Broadway shows. Gertrude Hoffmann was a trusted colleague and key collaborator with almost all the legendary figures of early Broadway including Florenz Ziegfeld, Oscar Hammerstein I, the Shubert Brothers, and George M. Cohan. She also mentored, collaborated with and/or feuded with many of the biggest stars of the era including The Dolly Sisters, Charlotte Greenwood, Eva Tanguay, and Anna Held. Sunny Stalter-Pace is an Associate Professor of American Literature at Auburn University, and it is my great pleasure to join with her to give some long overdue recognition to this important figure in the development of early 20th century show business. Benjamin Grosvenor — Schumann & Brahms (Decca) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Benjamin Grosvenor by “They're so interconnected as figures and personalities. There are so many ways you can bring them together, because their whole lives are just interconnected in this wonderful way,” British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor says about his latest recording, Schumann & Brahms, which explores the fascinating relationship among Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Can you tell us about the fictional character by E.T.A. Hoffmann that is the inspiration for the first track, Kreisleriana? “Johannes Kreisler was a romanticized idea of a tortured artist, a musician with really high ideals and obsessed with the music of Bach. A temperamental musician prone to mood swings and fits of inspiration and then depression. Robert Schumann identified with him as a figure. I mean, there were many similarities between them. The most substantial movement of the set is the second. He told Clara that this piece was about their lives together. This movement is intimacy, longing and love. “Clara only performed certain movements of it, and Franz Liszt did, as well. Although they admired the piece, they thought it was too much for the audience. I believe that Robert even suggested to Clara that when she plays the last movement, perhaps she should do a crescendo at the end so that the audience would applaud. The idea of a piece disappearing to pianissimo as it does was unusual for the time.” When you perform the work, do you do the pianissimo? “Yes. It's a magical effect. Everything dissolves, like in a puff of smoke.” Why did you choose Robert Schumann's Romance No. 2 for this album? “When they were married, he wrote these romances. Clara requested that he dedicate them to her, and she greatly admired this second piece. She said she knew of nothing more tender than this love duet. It remained a special piece for her throughout her life. It was the last piece she requested on her deathbed. A grandson played it for her.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A proposed method for forecasting transformative AI, published by Matthew Barnett on February 10, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. In 2021, I proposed measuring progress in the perplexity of language models and extrapolating past results to determine when language models were expected to reach roughly "human-level" performance. Here, I build on that approach by introducing a more systematic and precise method of forecasting progress in language modeling that employs scaling laws to make predictions. The full report for this forecasting method can be found in this document. In this blog post I'll try to explain all the essential elements of the approach without providing excessive detail regarding the technical derivations. This approach can be contrasted with Ajeya Cotra's Bio Anchors model, providing a new method for forecasting the arrival of transformative AI (TAI). I will tentatively call it the "Direct Approach", since it makes use of scaling laws directly to make predictions about compute requirements for AI. Naturally, the Direct Approach is a very speculative framework and might end up being useless for forecasting TAI (in fact, I consider this the most likely outcome). Nonetheless, I'm hopeful that something like it can serve as a better foundation than current TAI timelines models, which I currently think are likely even worse. Note that there may be errors in the report and Colab notebook, as they were not extensively fact-checked. Some background In a nutshell, this approach is simply about taking the cross-entropy loss of an autoregressive model and trying to find a way of interpreting that quantity qualitatively: that is, something we can put on a chart and extrapolate until the quantity reaches a natural threshold that we identify with something important. In my 2021 post about predicting language model performance, I drew a trendline through a plot of language model perplexities on various benchmarks and noted when the trendline went through estimates of "human-level" perplexity. This approach felt reasonable to me at the time, but I now think it too easily hand-waved away some important details. The error of omission I committed in my old approach becomes more apparent when you think about language model performance from the perspective of scaling laws, for example the parametric scaling law from Hoffmann et al. 2022: Here, we see cross-entropy loss as a function of parameters N and training tokens D seen during training. Notably, if we take the limit as the number of parameters and training tokens goes to infinity, then we're left with E. Theoretically, E corresponds to the "entropy of natural text" under certain assumptions, which is precisely the thing I identified with "roughly human-level" performance in my previous post. In other words, if we take this scaling law naively, it seems as though it will take infinite compute to reach human-level performance. I believe the resolution to this apparent issue is to say that "human-level" performance will not be obtained when loss hits E, but rather some small level above E. How close to E is enough? Well, that's the question we tried to answer with this report. Summary of the Direct Approach We begin by considering a language task, which in this post will be scientific research for illustration. For simplicity, let's imagine that this task consists of writing high-quality research papers or reports, although more nuanced specifications are possible. Of course, real scientific research involves more than merely writing research papers. It involves proposing hypotheses, devising experiments, and collecting data, but for now, let's imagine that we can simplify all these steps into one step that involves writing high quality research papers. This simplification may not be entirely unrealistic, since if the ...

This episode I would like to take a more general look at this turbulent time, the second half of the 11th century. Which developments shaped this time, medieval Germany and to what extent they affected Anno and also the city of Cologne. But all that would be far too complex for me. So I'm glad that Dirk from the "History of the Germans" podcast was kind enough to stop by for this episode. In our little chat we start off by talking about our motivation why we started our podcasts and then go straight into the action, the 2nd half of the 11th century.
