In this episode, we explore the truth behind real transformation with Bernd Ziethen, an experienced CEO, HR consultant, and headhunter. Bernd shares that while technology is advancing fast — especially with AI — true business success depends on leadership, culture, and human connection. He explains that even the best tech tools will fail without strong people and trust behind them. Bernd draws a powerful parallel between business transformation and mergers, where up to 70% fail due to cultural misalignment. He stresses that transformation is not just about strategy or tech—it's about how leaders engage people through empathy, honesty, and listening. He explains that leadership today means being open, embracing rapid change, and genuinely liking people. “To lead others,” Bernd says, “you must first like yourself.” He also shares behind-the-scenes tips from his experience as a top-level headhunter. Cultural fit, he emphasizes, can't be measured only with numbers. It requires emotional intelligence, deep listening, and understanding personal goals. His approach to hiring goes beyond resumes—he spends time understanding if a leader aligns with company values and if both sides are willing to invest in the relationship. The Top 3 Key Learnings 1. People Are the Core of Transformation: Technology is a tool, but success depends on building trust and leading with empathy. 2. Leadership Is Listening: Today's leaders must be open-minded, self-aware, and comfortable not having all the answers. 3. Cultural Fit Drives Success: In hiring and transformation, matching values and communication styles is critical — not just hard skills. About Bernd Ziethen As a Leadership Architect, Bernd combines executive mentoring and executive search – practice-oriented, analytically sound, and backed by deep industry expertise. He supports leaders in their personal development – and help companies find exactly these kinds of leaders. With compelling direct outreach and an honest message. As a senior executive search consultant, he supports managers in their personal growth and companies in filling key positions with precision. With 30 years of industry experience, sound diagnostics, and clear direct outreach, Bernd brings together what truly drives impact: Leadership that enables transformation. This week, Izzy and Murtada discuss the film of the summer. No, it's not Superman, and it's definitely not Eddington. It's Taxi zum Klo—Frank Ripploh's 1980 film about a gay public school teacher in Berlin who is forced to reassess his preference for casual sex when he enters into a relationship with a cinema worker named Bernd. The restoration of this extremely modern, incisive film premieres at Metrograph in New York City on August 1. Izzy and Murtada also discuss the aforementioned Superman and Eddington—why Superman's politics are surprisingly bold and Eddington's are annoyingly toothless, what James Gunn offers the DC Universe, and where Ari Aster can go from here. Why is design still overlooked in Germany's circular economy events? Most circular economy events in Germany focus on engineering, technology and economic policy. But design, where 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined, rarely takes center stage. In this episode, Bernd Müller, Director of Relations and Sustainability at the German Design Council, explains why they created the Circular Design Summit to change that. He shares how the summit brings together companies, designers and other departments to work on circularity from the start of the product lifecycle. Bernd reflects on the value of collaboration, and why both design and business need to evolve together. He also points to upcoming trends like repair, resale and the search for scalable materials. This episode is part of Circular Design Summit in cooperation with the German Design Council.

In this episode of the WW2 Podcast, I am joined by Bernd Häber to discuss the remarkable story of his grandfather, Fritz Häber — a German soldier who became a prisoner of war in American custody at the end of World War II. During his 16 months in a U.S. POW camp, Fritz kept a diary that not only captured the daily realities of captivity but also reflected on his wartime experiences and personal history. Now published as Fritz Häber: The Complete Diary – 16 Months in an American POW Camp, the account provides a rare and honest perspective from the losing side of the conflict. Bernd shares insights into his grandfather's life, the motivations behind the diary, and the legacy it represents — a deeply human story of reflection, identity, and the long shadow of war. The couple hailed from West Germany and had been hitchhiking through Canada and an unidentified man driving a pick-up truck is seen using Andrea's travellers' cheques in the days following her death. Nearly six years later, a suspect named Andy Rose is charged with the crime based on testimony from a former friend who claimed she heard him confess to the murders. This week we taste Bernd Maylander's (the safety car driver's wine). He did not pay us, we paid 70 quid for the bottle. And we review the F1 The Movie premiere, and F1 The Album, and we watch Carlos Sainz' new L'Oreal advert. All the F1 things you didn't think you needed and probably don't.This episode of Dirty Air is sponsored by Swatch watches. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today I'm speaking with Bernd Roeck about his book, The World at First Light: A New History of the Renaissance (Princeton University Press, 2025). Bernd is professor of modern history at the University of Zurich and director of the German Centre for Venetian Studies in Venice. Translated by Patrick Baker, The World at First Light is a truly magisterial work. Much ink and paint has been spilled illuminating and interpreting the cultural flourishing known as Europe's rebirth. The Renaissance was chiefly marked by a revival in classical literature and philosophy, artistic and scientific innovations embodied by polymaths like Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, and William Shakespeare. In exploring this historical period, Bernd offers the most authoritative and up-to-date treatment of the Renaissance. Caleb Zakarin is editor of the New Books Network.
