The elevated place of sports in North America and the societal expectations that surround them are often perpetuated at the expense of the athletes' mental health. Whether this is in team sports or individual sports predominantly played by boys and men, any weakness whether real or perceived is weaponized, while toughness and hypermasculinity rule both on the field, as well as in the locker room. Dr. Teresa Fowler has investigated how stereotypes in elite-level men's hockey influence the mental well-being of boys and men, while Geoff Girvitz, the founder of Bang personal Training, takes a mindfulness-based approach to strength training and leads a platform for men in taking care of themselves with "dad strength."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nothing can change your life like an injury. It's challenging - both mentally and physically. I've experienced this firsthand. I fell and broke my ankle at the end of August and realized I had a lot to learn about recovery. It became a creative challenge for me - so I reached out to an expert. On this episode I'm excited to share my conversation with Toronto-based functional exercise and health expert GEOFF GIRVITZ. He's also a Tiny Habits® certified coach. Geoff and I talk via Zoom about the mindset and physical challenges that come with an injury and the rehab that follows. He shares his proven framework for recovery along with some exercise and nutrition tips. In this, our final episode of 2022 we talk with Geoff Girvitz, the owner of Bang Fitness and creator of the Dad Strength Podcast. He's married and has a six-year-old son. At the age of 45 Geoff was diagnosed with ADHD. Since that time, he's been working closely with men with ADHD to maximize their potential – recognizing that neurodiversity can give you a “superpower” when used well. In the conversation we explore his early experiences with a father who hated noise and the adaptations it created in him, his fatherhood journey, the diagnosis of ADHD, and the creation of Dad Strength. Geoff approaches life by devising systems that simplify the complex into workable actions. His goals are to achieve a healthy balance of mind, body and soul. Do you ever say, “I really should do X?” If you want to bring certain habits into your life, you must create space. In order to create space, you need to get rid of things that are not serving you first. Today's guest, Geoff Girvitz, tells us just how to do that. In this episode, we talk about: How people with ADHD have traits that lead to successful entrepreneurship Being a proponent of systems over will power The term ADHD - It is vague and not a good description Clarifying the importance of tasks by using contrasting questions How you can become more present in your life and business Having kids is a great filter to understand what is really important in life Creating more bandwidth by getting rid of unnecessary stress Memorable Quotes “If you're stuck in a place like that, you either need to find the right environment or I would encourage you to create your own.” “A lot of the magic happens in quiet moments where you haven't filled it in.” “If there is something shitty in your life or in your experience, that is a really great place to plant a seed for something positive.” BIO: Geoff is a health coach, entrepreneur, and dad. He founded Bang Personal Training in 2008 and launched The Dad Strength Podcast in 2022. Geoff helps dads with ADHD use exercise as a tool to become more present and centred—in both their personal and professional lives.
