MAHA's ‘Natural' Foods Obsession Doesn't Account for the Way We Actually Eat (Part 2) In the 2nd half of this episode, learn how the MAHA movement's desire to eat more “naturally” may be grounded in a need for people to feel empowered, but it's definitely not scalable to earth this way. Reminds me of a quote from Sailesh Rao in The End of Medicine film, "When we say we'll go back to small scale farming, we're basically saying the problem is not that WE'RE eating animal foods, the problem is that the riffraff are eating animal foods. If you can make the poor people stop eating animal foods, there'll be plenty for the rich to eat animal foods. It's a very classist, colonialist argument to make. I'm just shocked that anyone would make it in this day and age." The elevated place of sports in North America and the societal expectations that surround them are often perpetuated at the expense of the athletes' mental health. Whether this is in team sports or individual sports predominantly played by boys and men, any weakness whether real or perceived is weaponized, while toughness and hypermasculinity rule both on the field, as well as in the locker room. Dr. Teresa Fowler has investigated how stereotypes in elite-level men's hockey influence the mental well-being of boys and men, while Geoff Girvitz, the founder of Bang personal Training, takes a mindfulness-based approach to strength training and leads a platform for men in taking care of themselves with "dad strength."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Hypermasculinity is a psychological and sociological term for the exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and human male sexuality. In the field of clinical psychology, this term has been used ever since the publication of research by Donald L. Mosher and Mark Sirkin in 1984. Mosher and Sirkin operationally define hypermasculinity or the "macho personality" as consisting of three variables: Callous sexual attitudes toward women The belief that violence is manly The experience of danger as exciting They developed the Hypermasculinity Inventory (HMI) designed to measure the three components.[1] Research has found that hypermasculinity is associated with sexual and physical aggression towards women[2][3][4] and perceived gay men.[2] Prisoners have higher hypermasculinity scores than control groups.[5]” -Wikipedia. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

I find this topic personally intriguing, as it's a mindset that I struggle to fully comprehend. With an anthropological approach, we aim to explore this subject without constantly passing moral judgment. Sadism, the pleasure derived from causing pain to others, is contrasted with consensual acts of physical pain or humiliation for sexual gratification known as BDSM. I believe that as long as these behaviors are consensual and don't result in irreversible harm, they may not be a moral concern. Furthermore, I argue that many dysfunctions in society may have a sexual element, such as the behavior of a stereotypical Karen or couples engaging in hostile fights. Additionally, the power dynamics and domination present in public rituals or workplace hierarchies can harbor sadistic components. While I personally feel perplexed by sadism, I'm interested in exploring it without constantly condemning it.Chapters0:00:00 Introduction to the Fascinating Topic of Sadism0:03:50 Society's Dysfunctions and the Relationship to Sadistic Tendencies0:07:05 The Suspension of Disbelief and Sadistic Satisfaction in Fictional Violence0:07:29 The Complexity of Sadism and Paraphilias0:12:48 Paraphilias and the Distinction from Healthy Sexuality0:18:16 Hypermasculinity and the Capacity to Avoid Empathy0:21:05 Women's Expectations of Selective Empathy in Men0:28:12 The dynamics of power and masochism in relationships.0:32:10 The nature of women's thrill in being desired.0:35:50 The importance of bravery in pursuing attractive partners.0:38:42 The Pitfalls of Settling for Less0:47:22 Freud's Observations on Sadism and Masochism0:49:06 The Purpose of Pleasure: Selfishness or Pair Bonding?0:54:15 Gifts and Abilities: Serving Self or World?0:56:51 The Dehumanization of Excellence and Competition1:00:03 Domination and Submission: The Absence of Reason and Negotiation

We may have been taught the study of International Relations in a logical way as if there were no underlying energies, emotions and desires in the behaviors and relations between states but, that time, has come to an end. What kind of energies lie beneath domestic and foreign policies? Are states striving for balance or moving towards the extremes of hypermasculinity or hyperfemininity? How are these two concepts influencing their decision-making? How is the intersection between individual thought/emotion/will, social/racial/gender/environmental movements, nations and cultures affecting the structures of States and their relations with others? The book we are going to talk about in this episode is one of my stand-out reads this year. Debut author John Byron's dark, thrilling crime fiction THE TRIBUTE sees a tough, blokey Sydney Detective Dave Murphy chasing a serial killer obsessed with a 16th century anatomy text called The Fabrica. And his art historian sister Jo joins the hunt as well. The Tribute is a tantalising blend of medical-forensic and police procedural that has an important issue underpinning the narrative - what is to be a man in modern Australian society? I love crime fiction that is dark and character-driven and The Tribute is exactly this - it's jaw-droppingly good! In this episode, I discussed how hyper masculinity presents itself and its impression to others. Hyper masculinity is an exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and sexuality. Aggressive behavior from men is highly common within the black community. It has been openly expressed to the world as if it were normal and has been accepted socially from peers and family members. Double standards play a huge role into those actions as well.  Other topics were discussed in this episode like, the idea of men taking care of women;vice versa, women acknowledging their worth and time, men not accepting rejection, women verbally and mentally abusing men, etc. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/inmyhead-podcast/support
