I SPENT the rest of the day doing the hundred little chores that consume an assistant innkeeper's day at a failing hotel, chores that leave no visible sign of their having been done, but which if left undone scream, “Look at me, look at me! Fix me, clean me, mend me!” In the evening, I read the twenty-second episode of Dead Air, “No Sale.” Get full access to The Personal History, Adventures, Experiences & Observations of Peter Leroy at peterleroy.substack.com/subscribe
Are exposed ankles back? Luigi Mangione sure says so. Also, stuffie reports, Jibbitz musings, purchasable solutions, travel lacrosse balls, and more! Stuffie bag charms are happening at 10 Corso Como, we ate up Liza Corsillo's "I Spent 3 Hours at the Jellycat Diner" for NY Mag, and we're just getting to know Mofusand and their loreless world via their Uniqlo collab. Jibbitz-inspired living is taking over! The Boulder Public Library hosted a make-your-own jibbitz event, and shoe charms and sandal rings are coming for Birkenstocks. Speaking of Birks, do you have thoughts on Reykjaviks? We love this Ruth Madievsky quote in her piece in The Cut about the Berlant/Novak podcast: “The pair bonded over their mutual obsession with purchasable solutions to the problem of being alive.” Two of our current solutjions: a lacrosse ball when traveling and a magnifying mirror with a light. The concept made us think about the book Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. What purchasable solutions to the problem of being alive (aka Thingies?) do you rely on? This election is tight. That's the problem.Donald Trump is a demonstrated "fascist to the core." His rhetoric sounds exactly like Adolf Hitler's. About half of Americans tell pollsters they'll vote for the fascist. For the Hitler impersonator. That's the problem.Does -- can -- the program, 3 Chords & the Truth, go forward in a fascist country? I don't think so. There will be other priorities, namely, either fight or flight. Trying to ignore evil -- killing one's conscience with the excuse "I'm not political" is not an option that allows you to look in the mirror every morning. So, we have come to what just might be the Big Show's not-very-long goodbye. Going on as normal -- even by the loose definition of normal we've had this past decade -- will be impossible, as least for me. Your mileage may vary, but be warned that the risks to your soul in the face of a Trumpian "normal" are unacceptable.I SPENT much of my young life in Louisiana observing and living a version of that reality during Jim Crow and in the wake of Jim Crow. The America of Trump 2.0 would be even worse, and it would have the weight of the entire federal government and military behind it.And that is our choice. It's either "a new way forward" under Kamala Harris . . . or the abyss. That it's entirely possible Americans will choose the abyss points to the real problem, of which Donald Trump's rise is merely a symptom. The last decade has pointed out the terrifying likelihood that the United States' real problem is more akin to societal -- civilizational -- collapse.Every institution is amid a full collapse, and the void has been filled with distrust -- which is not irrational by any means -- alienation and boiling anger. And demagogic psychotics like Trump know exactly how to exploit what ails us.Feed your demons, feed Trump. Feed Trump, feed our demons. The end result is the grave. It would not be a peaceful death.Boy, this doesn't sound like a pitch for this week's edition of a show that's supposed to entertain. No, it doesn't. On the other hand, 3 Chords & the Truth never has been just about entertaining you. It's also been about something bigger. It's been about trying to make you think, too.Well, we stand at the corner of THINK and DON'T THINK -- or at least, if you do think, don't let anybody know what you're thinking.I can't live that way. The Founding Fathers didn't think anyone could live that way. You shouldn't accept living that way.And if you think electing the fascist won't crush your freedom and come after your very soul, you're a damn fool.Don't be a damn fool. Do listen to the Big Show; it's as good as ever this week. It's 3 Chords & the Truth, y'all -- for now. Be there. Aloha.

For most of the so-called “content creators” we know, marketing is a necessary evil. You make the work you want to make, then wait until the last possible moment to figure out how you're going to get people to click on it. But what would it look like if you became super obsessed with the marketing side of the equation and let it become the driving force of the entire creative process? What if you zeroed in on a single distribution platform, spent years studying how it worked, then built an entire creative practice based entirely around the tips and tricks you knew would attract a snowballing number of eyeballs to your work?If you're wondering what the resulting content would look like, well… it might look something like the videos of a 25-year-old YouTuber named Jimmy Donaldson, who recently surpassed the Swedish edgelord PewDiePie to become the biggest YouTuber of all time. Even if you haven't seen his videos, or stumbled across his chocolate brand, you've probably heard his YouTube moniker: MrBeast. As of this writing, he has 171 million subscribers and counting.Donaldson owns an entire neighborhood in his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina, where he has dozens of employees working around the clock to produce big-budget spectacles with names like “$456,000 Squid Game in Real Life” and “I Spent 50 Hours Buried Alive.” His videos often revolve around random acts of charity — one of his early breakouts involved him walking up to a homeless person and giving him $10,000 — and he has spoken at length about how attention-grabbing headlines and thumbnails are the engine of his success. If you know somebody who works in actual marketing, they'd probably tell you that MrBeast is the future of media. Between the budgets, the audience numbers, and the sheer physical scale of many of these spectacles — not to mention his spin-off channels and a whole sub-economy of reaction videos and YouTube tutorials — the world of MrBeast is so big and bewildering that it takes a special kind of dedication to explain it all. Lucky for you, The New York Times Magazine recently published a delightfully brain-bending story called “How MrBeast Became the Willy Wonka of YouTube” by one of our favorite writers on technology and culture. His name is Max Read, and he's a screenwriter and journalist who has a terrific newsletter on Substack called Read Max. Max began work on the article after a MrBeast video called “1000 Blind People See for the First Time” went “bad viral” on Twitter, sparking questions about the “authenticity” of Donaldson's super-sized brand of altruism (he paid for their glaucoma surgery) and differing generational attitudes towards the mercenary tactics he uses to pull these stunts off. He joins us to discuss what he calls the “unstoppable flywheel of charity, spectacle, and growth” that powered Donaldson's rise, and the dystopian realities of the creator economy that his tactics lay bare. We also dig into what makes MrBeast's relationship with his audience unique (hint: according an academic Max spoke to, it has something to do with a media studies concept called the “audience commodity”), and how even though a lot of millennials can't stand him, there's a little bit of MrBeast in all of us. Three unique Tucson business start-ups share their trials and tribulations telling it like it is to get where they are today. It's an hour of interesting knowledge and fun with this episode of Tucson means Business.About Kathleen Pickrel Kathleen has launched a new online course called Dating After Decades, which helps women who haven't dated in many years (due to divorce, losing a spouse, or just haven't been out there in a while) to navigate the often scary and confusing world that dating has become Kathleen grew up in Southern California. Her father was in the military & her mother is from Northern Ireland. She was a homemaker for her 2 children -Kaitlyn and Ian, & while taking care of the home, she pursued her education, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology & master's degree in social work. She moved to Tucson in 1993 when her husband was transferred with Raytheon. After college, she worked as a medical social worker for 14 years, working with cancer patients and their families. At the age of 48, Kathleen's husband of 25 years passed away, which started a new journey for her. Wanting a new direction, she trained to become a certified life coach and founded Choose Congruency. Kathleen works with people and groups that are ready to make a positive change, especially if the desired change comes after a major life shake-up. In her coaching, she helps you to gain clarity of what you want, identifying roadblocks to getting there, helps you stay motivated, as well as keeps you accountable to working toward your goal. This is true for both 1:1 and group coaching. Currently, Kathleen has launched a new online course called Dating After Decades, which helps women who haven't dated in many years (due to divorce, losing a spouse, or just haven't been out there in a while) to navigate the often scary and confusing world that dating has become. It is information and support that Kathleen would have found helpful when she decided to try dating again after more than 25 years. I met Anthony in 2019 when he asked me to be in the ASMR episode of the series and we've kept in touch ever since. I love this episode and I hope you love it too! Jenny talks about how Leah's story inspired her so she decided to reach out through a mutual friend. Leah wrote an article for the Huffington Post called "I Spent 35 Years Trying To Convince The World (And Myself) That I’m White." Leah learned a lot about herself and her story of trying to find belonging as a child when the story took on a life of it's own, going viral and often misunderstood because of some circumstances surrounding it's release. We unpack it in today's episode.Leah talks about how her day job is as an attorney but she has always loved to write. She shares her story about her love for writing over the last few years. Jenny and Leah talk about what it is like to grow up in Metro DC and how it is different from anywhere else. Being that close to the seat of government colors the conversations and everyday life of people that you are unaware of until you leave the area. Leah talks about her family and the number of siblings she has and the culture of her home growing up. She was adopted by two white parents and had a large mixed race family with other adopted siblings. Their parents encouraged them to talk about race and learn more about their heritage growing up but for Leah, as a child, she wanted to belong in her family and the thought of another potential family out there felt as if it could erode the relationship with the family she had and loved being a part of. As an adult she can clearly see with more perspective that that was not the case but as a child this was a very real and rational fear that many adoptees experience in their own way. They talk about ghost families and what that is like for children of adoption. Leah also goes on to talk about how when she was growing up she drifted more towards white culture because she wanted to fit in with her parents and feel like she belonged.Jenny and Leah talk about how growing up adopted you always want to feel like you belong and there is a piece of you that no matter what will question that. Sara talks about the importance of saying biological instead of real when you are talking to an adoptee about their family. Leah talks about her experience of publishing for the Huff Post and how her article got interpreted in ways that she did not expect. Leah, Jenny, and Sara then go on to talk about the title of her article and how she lost control of the article. She was invited to a talk show that only made things worse for her. Leah gives advice for people who are scared to tell their own stories.

This week's guest is Patricia Bright: businesswoman, YouTube queen and author of “Heart & Hustle: Use Your Passion, Build Your Brand, Achieve Your Dreams.” Patricia has earned over 2.9M YouTube subscribers, and just hit 1.2M on Instagram. I've followed Patricia Bright since the late 2000’s, and it’s such a treat to be able to celebrate the platform she’s created. Since recording, Patricia's expanded her empire with the launch of The Break channel on YouTube where she chronicles her investment property journey and dishes out invaluable personal finance tips. *This podcast episode was recorded in April 2019. Note on audio: You’ll hear the sound of me typing furiously in the background during the interview. I apologize!* 0:00-4:30 – Meet Patricia Bright, the story behind Bri Books cold pitching Patricia and why Suzanne Jeffers’ “Feel the fear and do it anyway” is how Patricia lives her life. 4:30 – In her book, Patricia discusses how being consistent is the challenge of our lives, and one we must rise to daily. Patricia shares her untold story, and why the big three--Brand, Business, and Beliefs--are crucial. With "Heart & Hustle," Patricia is teaching us to find our grinds, and identify our sweet spots where passions and unique skills find the perfect audience. 8:20 – How Patricia applied for and earned an investment banking internship…even though she didn’t have the grades and failed the admittance test…and what the experience taught her about the nature of limitations 12:09 – Patricia on learning to be a stronger networker: “Networking should be active, and start on an honest point of interest.” 14:25 – Taking the sting out of networking, and learning to be comfortable having varied conversations with different types of people. 14:45 – While Patricia was writing “Heart and Hustle,” she created one of her most successful YouTube series organically, the “I Spent” series wherein she shops online retailers, and brings her YouTube audience along as she tries on and reviews new purchases. 15:25 – Patricia: “It’s important to find that sweet spot between your passion, ability and what’s practical.” it sounds like that’s the recipe. 18:00 – Patricia on the science of building an audience: Writing down and executing ideas, and planning content are key! These two concepts are transformative because it takes the in-the-moment pressure away. 18:50 – Patricia’s #BriBooks current read: “Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear 19:45 – Patricia: “You realize that in life, you’ll have a big goal, but what matters are the steps you take towards it. If you can take those steps every day, you’ll most likely achieve that goal. Pick up ‘Atomic Habits’! 20:07 – Let’s play “Patricia Taught Me,” a game where we quote from “Heart and Hustle” and Patricia expands on the ideas behind her words. 24:20 – One of the most powerful quotes from the book: “ “When you're struggling or fearful about doing something you want to do, the temptation is real to look for an excuse. Don’t. Excuses are just ways to stop yourself from being as good as you want to be.” – Patricia Bright, “Heart and Hustle.” 25:50 – What’s making Patricia say “What a time to be alive”? “I’m excited about is the fact that knowledge and wisdom will be open for everyone. We’re in the generation of we all have the same knowledge, so let’s work. It’s important to me: for people to learn, have access to information. That’s where the passion lies.” LINKS TO PATRICIA'S WORK: Patricia Bright's blog, book, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube channels. Say hi! @bribookspod and bribookspod.com and bribookspod.com/newsletter. If you're like us, you likely never heard of Synanon, but its tactics live on in "tough-love" drug rehabilitation programs. Synanon was founded in 1958 by Charles Dederich, and it was the first ever non-medical drug rehabilitation program. And then it became a cult. Join Beth and Kelly as they share the story of shaved heads, forced abortions and the origin story of one of Nancy Reagan's favorite programs. In this two-part interview with Erik Garlington, the brains and brawn behind the black and queer pop-punk outfit Proper., we discuss both his records, "The Surburbs Have Ruined My Life" and "I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better," and how his background of being an outsider and a military brat lead him on a wild journey to be a pop-punk singer in New York City. Full chronological playlist: "Germany, 1991" "A$AP Rocky Type Beat" "Not Black Enough" "Curtains Down! Throw in the Towel!" "Bragging Rights (ft. Willow Hawks of The Sonder Bombs)" "No Loitering"
A recent Money.com article by Laura Belgray, I Spent $300 on One Uber Ride (And Would Do It Again in a Second). Here's Why I Don't Regret It, led to a discussion here at That Solo Life about what aspects of our work and lives in general cause us significant stress and how can we offset it.In the article, Belgray shares about her experience as she prepared to attend a writing retreat. The destination was accessible by train but the more she thought about getting to the train on time, switching trains mid-trip, and the rest of the journey, she knew this mode of travel would completely stress her out and have a negative impact on her experience at this event. She decided to spend $300 on an Uber ride to the retreat and hasn’t looked back.As solo business owners (cliché alert), our time truly is money. An expense that might not make sense at first – outsourcing laundry, grocery delivery, massage to combat our time at the keyboard – could be the very thing to buy you productivity and peace of mind. What is the one necessary “extravagance” that helps you most?
Welcome to season five of Bri Books! You can follow along with the conversation on Instagram and Twitter using #BriBooks. Subscribe to newsletter bribookspod.com/newesletter! We’re kicking off the season with Patricia Bright, businesswoman, YouTube queen and author of “Heart & Hustle: Use Your Passion, Build Your Brand, Achieve Your Dreams.” Patricia has earned over 2.7M YouTube subscribers, and just hit 1M on Instagram. I've followed Patricia Bright since the late 2000’s on YouTube and Longhaircareforum, and it’s such a treat to be able to celebrate the platform she’s created. *Note on audio: You’ll hear a small sound of me typing furiously in the background during the interview. I apologize! 0:00-4:30 – Meet Patricia Bright, the story behind Bri Books cold pitching Patricia and why Suzanne Jeffers’ “Feel the fear and do it anyway” is how Patricia lives her life. 4:30 – In the book, Patricia discusses how being consistent is the challenge of our lives, and one we must rise to daily.

“WALKING SAM OF PINE RIDGE RESERVATION” and 5 More Terrifying Paranormal Stories! #WeirdDarknessSprawled out over approximately 3,470 square miles of desert and prairie badlands in the U.S. state of South Dakota is the Oglala Lakota Native American reservation known as the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The area is imbued with a rather dark history, such as being the location of the infamous 1890 battle at Wounded Knee, where U.S. soldiers mercilessly massacred hundreds of Lakota Sioux, including scores of women and children, in a bloody assault. Here is also a place of natural splendor and surreal views of hills, plateaus, and prairies, as well as many legends, myths, and mysteries, inhabited by the Native people, a diverse array of flora and fauna, and by some accounts a supernatural denizen from beyond our understanding.IN THIS EPISODE: If you spend the night amongst the dead in a graveyard, don’t be surprised if something supernatural happens to you. (I Spent The Night In a Graveyard) *** An old man regrets not obeying his wife’s dying wish. (The Stubborn Piano) *** Over 200 lobotomies were performed at the Ridges Asylum – without anesthesia or an operating room. Is it any wonder why it’s now considered to be haunted? (The Ridges Asylum) *** A Vietnam veteran has his first paranormal investigation in a Nevada town with a population of more dead souls than alive. (Marine Protectors) *** In a quiet Virginia cemetery is a peculiar tomb that has mystified visitors for nearly two hundred years. Who is buried there? No one seems to know. (The Grave of the Female Stranger) *** Demons hitchhiking, reports of a mysterious entity, strange suicides… they all have been seen and experienced on a certain Indian reservation in South Dakota. Marketing strategist and creative hustler Jasmine Star dropped out of law school 13 years ago to pick up a camera and follow her dreams. Now known for her award-winning photography and legendary Instagram presence, Jasmine joins Brad Lea to share some of what she learned along the way. Here's a taste of what they covered... On owning social media: Leverage whatever is popular in the now. Blogging, twitter, facebook. Whatever the next iteration is, get there because it's free to use, the land is cheap, and you can build a resort on it. Swapping like-for-like makes social media a transaction instead of a conversation. Instead, look at it like a great, big cocktail party—and only you get to decide how much fun you have. Curate your feed in a way that feeds you. On starting your dream business: We all suck when you first start doing something! What people see today is 13 years as a hustling entrepreneur who had to teach herself everything. Don't compare my 13 years of experience with your two years. Two years in, you're not going to be driving a hot car and invited to the big parties. It takes time to be great. When we do the same thing over and over, we run the risk of having it become rote. Stop defining your possibilities by your current role. You won't grow by staying comfortable. What is your value proposition, what makes you different, and how can you use it to help others? At the end of the day, it's your job to create different iterations of your business that keep you inspired, but also give you the ability to impact lives. Working harder doesn't always guarantee. You need to have a strategy. What got you here won't get you there. You need to step back and ask yourself “What isn't working?” On following your dreams: There was a time in my career where I had nothing, I was nothing, I owned nothing. I couldn't come from any other place than sheer authenticity. And, somewhere in the middle of my career when the awards and accolades starting coming in, I thought I had to be somebody that I wasn't, and people can smell it. Be authentic, be yourself. Because you'll repel the people who shouldn't be around you and attract the ones who should. My number-one attribute is resiliency. I Spent most of my life never being cool enough, smart enough, fast enough, or skinny enough. But I was the person who kept working hard. Want to learn how to curate your own party like Jasmine? "I SPENT 15 YEARS WITH THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY, serving two tours in Afghanistan. I was trained as a Weapons Specialist, Paratrooper, Navy Diver, and spent a good portion of my military career as a member of a Canadian Counter Improvised Explosive Disposal Team. I am also the only member of the Canadian Forces to ever dismantle an explosive vest off a live suicide bomber. After returning home from my second tour in Afghanistan, I couldn’t function like a normal member of society. I was on high alert at all times, uncomfortable around others, and spiraling in the depths of my own mind. I remember staring at my nightstand, and wishing there was a handgun inside to stop the pain. And then I’d get out of bed, get dressed and head out. This is how I started my day. I’d drive to the base and dream of crashing my car into the big rock face that I passed on the way. There were car crash casualties there all the time, so nobody would know I did it on purpose. My family would get the insurance money and this constant pain would end. Around this same time, I was diagnosed with PTSD and medically released from the Canadian Armed Forces. I could’ve believed I was broken and gave up right there, but then I would think of my little guy growing up without a dad. THANK GOD FOR MY LITTLE GUY. IF IT WEREN’T FOR HIM, I WOULDN’T BE HERE TODAY HELPING OTHERS.I WENT ON A QUEST, A ONE MAN MISSION TO FIND A CURE. This shit wasn’t about me anymore. It was all for my little guy. I forced myself to find ways to recover. But the first step was taking responsibility and accepting that I signed up for this. I was a warrior. I dropped my ego and asked for help. I chased my passions and opened my own gym. I completed an expedition in the North Pole. I led Team Canada in the Invictus Games. I summited Mount Kilimanjaro. I stepped back into the roles I was meant for - survivor, warrior, leader. I became a voice for my brothers and sisters who serve.Today, I’m building a community, bringing those who serve together to conquer PTSD. I’m also fortunate to be able to help thousands of people transform their lives and businesses - from CEOs and influencers to athletes and celebrities (not to mention, some of the biggest veterans and charity organizations in Canada).
