Filistinlilerin, atalarının yüzyıllardır yaşadığı topraklardan cebren sökülüp atıldığı, tehcir ve katliamlarla karşılaştığı o kritik 1948 yılı, aynı zamanda Siyonist Yahudilerin birbirleriyle de kıyasıya mücadele ettiği bir zaman dilimiydi. Söz konusu mücadelenin en keskin safhalarından biri, 22 Haziran günü Tel Aviv kıyılarında yaşandı: Vladimir Zeev Jabotinsky'nin kurduğu Revizyonist Siyonizm akımı -Ürdün'ün de İsrail sınırları içine dâhil edilmesi gerektiğini savunuyorlardı-, David Ben-Gurion ve diğer Siyonist liderler tarafından temsil edilen ana akım Siyonizm'in rakibi, hatta düşmanı haline gelmişti. Revizyonistlerin kontrolündeki Yahudi paramiliter terör örgütü Irgun, 1948'de Filistin topraklarındaki bütün Siyonist silahlı örgütler bir araya toplanırken dışarıda kalmak için direniş gösterdi. Bu, kendi liderlik ettiği Hagana'nın çatısı altında İsrail'in resmî ordusunu oluşturma çabalarını sürdüren Ben-Gurion'un tolere edebileceği bir durum değildi. Süre giden çatışma, Irgun tarafından 1947'de satın alınan eski bir Amerikan gemisinin, 1948'in Mayısında Fransa'dan silah ve mühimmatla doldurularak Filistin'e sevk edilmesiyle somut biçimde açığa çıktı. Gemiye, Jabotinsky'nin Ukrayna'da gazetecilik yaptığı yıllarda kullandığı mahlas olan “Altalena” adını vermişlerdi. Irgun lideri -İsrail'in gelecekteki başbakanlarından- Menahem Begin, Filistin'de Araplara karşı katliamları son hızla sürdüren örgütüne ilave silah desteğinde bulunmak istiyordu. Bizzat Begin'in de 900 yolcusu arasında bulunduğu Altalena, 20 Haziran 1948 günü önce Tel Aviv'in kuzeyindeki bir noktaya yanaşmaya çalıştı.
Despite the embargo on armaments to Israel, the Israelis figured out daring ways to smuggle in weapons. The arrival of these munitions enabled the Hagana to attempt to break the stranglehold on Jerusalem. The all important site overlooking the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was Kastel and the Arabs under the command of their most dynamic leader, Abdel Kader al-Husseini, drove the Jews out. But not before a Hagana gunner eliminated Husseini, seriously crippling Arab leadership. Abdel Kader al-Husseini's cousin was the Nazi mufti of Jerusalem, accurately portrayed in TFJ Season I episode 33. Haj Amin al-Husseini spared no efforts to exterminate the Jews in Israel and elsewhere, inflaming Arab passions with the fiction that the Jews were taking over Al Aksa. This false rumor invariably led to pogroms, mass murder, mayhem, looting and destruction. The family tradition was carried on with the Mufti's nephew, arch terrorist, Yasser Arafat. Their lies, incitement and methodology continue with Hamas today. Learn more at TellerFromJerusalem.com Don't forget to subscribe, like and share! Podcast Eli Suli LAS LUCHAS DE LA HAGANA, EL IRGUN Y LEJI EN CONTRA DEL GOBIERNO BRITANICO EN PALESTINA Conferencia
HINE LO YANUM VELO ISHAN SHOMER ISRAEL HE AQUI QUE NO SE ADORMECERA NI DORMIRA EL GUARDIAN DE ISRAEL LAS LUCHAS DE LA HAGANA, EL IRGUN Y LEJI EN CONTRA DEL GOBIERNO BRITANICO EN PALESTINA
Once Israel declared her independence, she was attacked by all of her neighbors. The Hagana, which will become the Israel Defense Forces, mobilized any able-bodied man or woman and this amounted to barely 30,000. The Arabs had significant manpower and far greater firepower and air forces. The Jews had nothing comparable. Lacking defense in depth the Jews could not afford to give ground on any of their four fronts. But now that the British mandate was over, the Jews were able to import weapons that had previously been forbidden. The greatest Jewish resource was the dedication of their troops, and the talent of their leaders. If Israel was to hang on, she would have to survive the first two weeks.
Following the UN vote for partition in November 1947, the British informed that they would not carry out on the policy voted on by the General Assembly, and they would remain in Palestine until May 1948. The British would no longer intervene in any fighting between Arabs and Jews, but they would still steadfastly enforce the ban on weapons for Jews. The Hagana was planning its attack to liberate Jewish residents under siege in Jerusalem. The road leading to Jerusalem was subject to sniper fire from Arab terrorist. The Irgun and Lechi wished to assist their brethren in Jerusalem and attacked the village of Deir Yassin and encountered fiercer resistance than expected. Pinned down, the fighters tossed hand grenades resulting in civilian losses.

Kermel Dağları'nın yamaçları üzerine yayılan şehir, Doğu Akdeniz'in en büyük limanlarından birine ev sahipliği yapıyor.

TFJ Series 2: Episode 2 The Arab revolt resulted in widespread violence across the land aimed at both Jewish and British targets. British officer and Christian Zionist, Orde Wingate trained Hagana fighters how to defend themselves. These troops assisted the British in quelling the Arab Revolt. These very same troops instructed by the British would become members of a Jewish revolt against the British less than ten years later. As the world was shocked by the atrocities performed against the Jews featured in the news after the Anschluss in March 1938, there was pressure in Washington to make a humanitarian effort on behalf of the refugees. America announced the Evian Conference to take place in July 1938 at Lake Geneva composed of 32 countries to alleviate the refugee crises. The conference was a total farce as no country, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, was prepared to open their borders and assist the refugees. This sent a clear message to Hitler that he would do whatever he wished and the suffering of millions of humans in Europe did not interest the world. TFJ: Series 1 Episode 40: The Birth of Israel With fear that Rommel's conquest of Africa may bring the German Army to Palestine, the Hagana, the prelude to the Israel Defense Forces, created an elite strike force called the Palmach. Menachem Begin assumes the leadership of the Irgun underground militia and becomes the most Wanted Man by the British in Palestine. In order to terminate the White Paper's restriction on Jewish immigration to Palestine, all three Jewish military forces in Israel unite to fight the British. Their efforts cause enormous interruption, aggravation and expense to the British and they retaliate with an operation that arrests 2700 Jews, many of them Zionist leaders, impound weapons and incriminating documents. Palestine Posts: An Eyewitness Account of the Birth of Israel by Daniel Chertoff is based upon the letters written by his deceased father, Mordecai, a Hagana soldier and journalist for the Palestine Post, from Jerusalem during the period leading up to and including Israel’s War of Independence (1947-1948). Daniel speaks with Eve Harow about the discovery of the letters, their the historical context, the detective work involved in finding people mentioned in them, and, surprisingly, in getting to ‘know' his grandparents and father's siblings. The book is a blend of painstakingly researched historical fact and intimate and moving detail exposed via correspondence written against the backdrop of the turbulent, exhilarating, and religiously fraught struggle to reconstitute the Jewish state. The book moves between the deeply personal and the prophetic, the heroic and the tragic. We are given a peek through a window into a family room on the ground floor of the birth of our national home. The drama and the outstanding questions remain long after the final page is read.

We shared in part one how Moshe Dayan rose to fame as a military hero. He joined the Hagana militia at the age of 14 and guided Israel through the Six Day War to one of the most lopsided victories in the history of warfare. In Part two we learn However, in 73, with Dayan still the defense minister, the Arabs launched a surprise attack from Syria and Egypt on Yom Kippur. While Israelis were fasting all over the nation, Egypt and Syria attacked. Expect for a few IDF commanders whose concerns fell upon deaf ears, no one saw it coming. Israel was caught off guard. As we will detail in our episode on the Valley of Tears, Israel, though outnumbered by the Soviet-backed Syrians, miraculously drove the them out of the Golan Heights. Israel won the Yom Kippur War, but it was Dayan who blamed for not being battle-ready. Dayan’s actions just after the miraculous recapturing of Jerusalem during the Six-Day-War may have sealed his fate, if you believe that God was behind the victory and had an opinion regrding the aftermath. After removing the Israeli flag from the Temple Mount, and then commanding the paratroopers to evacuate, Moshe Dayan declared, “We have returned to the holiest of our places, never to be parted from them again…We did not come to conquer the sacred sites of others or to restrict their religious rights, but rather to ensure the integrity of the city and to live in it with others in fraternity.” On the one hand, this showed that Israelis were not like the Jordanians, who destroyed every Jewish building or symbol after 1948, when all Jews were removed from the ancient Old City of Jerusalem. On the other hand, if God had returned the Temple Mount to Israel, who were we to allow Islamists free access…to the point that today, I, as an Israeli can only visit the Temple Mount and that with great difficulty, while Hamas activists have constant and free access. Dayan made it possible for Jews to visit the Temple Mount, but were forbidden to pray. Later, the secularist Dayan remarked that the Temple Mount is a Prayer mosque for Muslims, but merely an historical site for Jews. I remember many years ago, leading a group of tourists up on the Temple Mount. I didn’t know the rules. As I gathered them together I boldly declared, “I don’t care what the Muslims say! This is our Temple Mount and we will pray here whether they like it or not.” As I began to pray the tour guide broke through our little circle in a panic, “You can’t do that! They are listening to you. There are microphones everywhere.” Suddenly I didn’t feel so bold, knowing that some Hamas activist was monitoring my bravado. How sad that neither Jews nor Christians are allowed to utter a word of thanksgiving at the place where Abraham bound Isaac, and where the first and second Temples stood—the greatest monument to the existence of Ancient Israel. Moshe Dayan, for all his heroics, was a secularist. He was not seeking what was in God’s heart, but what was politically acceptable. He did not want to keep the Golan Heights, but wanted to trade it back to the Syrians for peace—as if that was even a possibility. He opposed the Kibbutzim, the collective farms that settled the Golan. Dayan was thought of by his peers to be brilliant, yet irresponsible, brave, yet, not willing to be held accountable for mistakes. While he loved the Jewish people, he had little respect for Judaism, once remarking when rabbis flocked to the Temple Mount just after it was liberated, “What is this? The Vatican?” Dayan died of a massive heart attack in 1981. Make sure you go to God.tv so you never miss an episode and you can find me at roncantor.com. Shalom.

"We've been here before!" Hanna Braun said to herself back in 1948 as Arab residents were expelled from Haifa. She had been a member of the Hagana before the Israeli army had been formally created - before there was even an Israel. She had escaped Germany at the height of the Nazi era, and tells marvelous tales of life in Palestine and how the dream of a secular, multicultural, state was stolen away by a select group who saw violence and hate as tools with which to build a nation. When she was old enough to fully understand what had happened, she dedicated her life to fighting injustice and increasing understanding on both sides. Hanna Braun was a friend of this podcast who taught us about a time in history and an experience that no school book has ever been allowed to publish. She passed away in November of 2011 at the age of 84. This podcast features our first ever conversation, recorded in February 2006, about her life growing up, and what led her to become such an outspoken activist and deciated humanitarian. Her Memoir - Weeds Don't Perish
