Three thousand years ago, workers building royal tombs in ancient Egypt did something almost unthinkable - they went on strike. While history records their demands as delayed wages, and popular culture thinks it was all about depriving them of makeup, the full story reveals a deeper fight for dignity, identity, and the essentials of daily life. This episode explores the world's first recorded labor strike and the surprising human details behind it. Then we yap yap with Shadowbox Live's Jimmy Mak! Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. With the lack of progress in the negotiations between the United States and Iran, US intelligence agencies are studying how Iran would respond if US President Donald Trump were to declare a unilateral victory in the two-month-old war, according to a Reuters report. Magid weighs in on any potential schism within the Trump administration as Iran's newest proposal appears to shelve the issue of a nuclear program -- the very reason the war was launched. Amid a growing diplomatic incident, Israel said Tuesday it had yet to receive evidence that a shipment of Russian grain had been “stolen” from occupied Ukrainian territory, while Kyiv said it was preparing sanctions against those involved in the transaction. Magid unravels this tangled issue, which played out live on social media. A list backed by the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party won most races in the weekend’s Palestinian municipal elections, election officials said Sunday, in a vote that for the first time in nearly two decades included a city in the Gaza Strip run by Hamas, the terror group that violently ousted Fatah from Gaza in 2007. We hear why this vote was significant -- and why it was not. Last week, Wendy Sherman, who served as deputy secretary of state for much of former US president Joe Biden’s administration, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being responsible for the perpetration of a genocide in Gaza. Magid explains how this opinion, coming from a former Biden official, is being heard more as the Democratic Party looks ahead to the next election. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Stanno tenendo in ostaggio l'economia mondiale a mano armata».

Tá roinnt comórtas i gceist mar tá leandáil gealaí a phleanáil ag an tSín ag an am céanna. In Éirinn, tá bacainn eile tagtha ar thógáil an Metrolink, agus an Stiúrthóir Tionscnaimh Seán Sweeney tar éis éirí as. Tionscnamh cáiliúil nó mícháiliúil é an Metrolink. Tá bealach díreach á chruthú idir lár Bhaile Átha Cliath agus an tAerfort mar cheann de príomhspriocanna an tionscnaimh. Moladh é den chéad uair in 2001, agus tháinig athruithe ollmhóra agus réimse dúshlán ar an tionscnamh le 25 bliain anuas, agus costas measta 11 billiún euro air ag an bpointe seo. D'éirigh Séan Sweeney as a ról le linn na seachtaine ar son a theaghlaigh, a bhfuil ina gcónaí sa Nua-Shéalainn, dúirt se go raibh sé neamh-inbhuanaithe a bheith ina chónaí chomh fada uathu. Tar éis blianta d'fhadhbanna pleanála, dlí agus airgeadais tá imní ar an bpobal go mbeidh moill eile mar thoradh den athrú seo. Deir Príomhfheidhmeannach Metrolink Lorcan O'Connor go bhfuil muinín aige nach gcuirfidh an bacainn seo le moill an tionscnaimh, agus go bhfuil tógáil réidh le tosú in 2027, leis an tseirbhís a chur i bhfeidhm i lár na 2030idí.*Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/27q6mz22 Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Iran is being crushed again by Israeli forces. An Iaráin á slacairt an athuair ag fórsaí Iosrael. Israeli military forces are clearly not resting on their laurels, as they are carrying out another massive raid this morning on the Iranian capital, Tehran, after suffocating the place overnight. Níl suí ná foras ar fhórsaí míleata Iosrael, is léir, agus iad ag tabhairt ollruathair arís ar maidin ar phríomhchathair na hIaráine, Tehran, tar éis dóibh an áit a shlacairt i gcaitheamh na hoíche. There is no word yet on the dead but it is assumed that scores of them are there. Níl aon chaint fós ar na mairbh ach glactar leis go bhfuil na scórtha acu ann. Two other cities – Shiraz in southern Iran and Tabriz in the northwest – have also been bombarded by the Israelis since morning. Dhá chathair eile – Shiraz i ndeisceart na hIaráine agus Tabriz san iarthuaisceart – tá siad á dtuairgneáil ag na hIosraelaigh ó mhaidin chomh maith. It is not a time of neglect or delay for the Israelis in Lebanon either, and it is reported that they are once again bombing villages in the south of that country. Ní tráth faillí ná moille ag na hIosraelaigh é sa Liobáin ach an oiread, agus tuairiscítear go bhfuil sráidbhailte i ndeisceart na tíre sin á mbuamáil acu arís. The Israeli army says it is also fighting Hezbollah on the ground. Deir arm Iosrael go bhfuil siad ag dul i ngleic le Hezbollah ar an talamh freisin. It appears that Iranian military forces fired an explosive drone at Dubai airport this morning, hitting a large fuel tank. Is cosúil gur scaoil fórsaí míleata na hIaráine drón pléascach le haerfort Dubai ar maidin agus gur buaileadh mórumar breosla ann. Smoke is rising from the tank but it doesn’t appear to be affecting flights at the airport much. Tá deatach ag éirí as an umar ach dealraíonn sé nach bhfuil sé ag cur isteach mórán ar eitiltí san aerfort. Military authorities in the United Arab Emirates say they have been diverting or shooting down dozens of Iranian drones since morning. Deir na húdaráis mhíleata in Aontas na nÉimíríochtaí Arabacha go bhfuil na scórtha drón ón Iaráin á gcur malairt riain acu nó á séideadh san aer acu ó mhaidin. Not to mention the destruction and killing, the economic toll of unrest is affecting countries around the world, including, what else, the countries that are waging war on Iran. Gan trácht ar an scrios agus an marú, tá deasca eacnamaíochta na corraíola ag cur isteach ar thíortha an domhain, lena n-áirítear, cad eile, na tíortha atá ag cur an chogaidh ar an Iaráin. The most pressing issue for them at the moment is the unhindered passage of oil and gas tankers through the Strait of Hamuz in southern Iran, while the Iranians still have some control over that neck of water. Tancaeir ola agus gáis a sheoladh saor ó bhuaireamh trí Chaolas Hamuz i ndeisceart na hIaráine is mó atá ag déanamh scime dóibh i láthair na huaire agus smacht áirithe go fóill ag na hIaránaigh ar an muinceann uisce sin. The European Union’s foreign affairs and security chief, Kaja Kallas of Estonia, indicated that EU naval ships might be sent to the region to pressure the Iranians to allow fuel tankers through. Ceannasaí gnóthaí eachtracha agus slándála an Aontais Eorpaigh, Kaja Kallas as an Eastóin, thug sí le fios go mb’fhéidir go seolfaí longa cabhlaigh ón Aontas chuig an réigiún chun brú a chur ar na hIaránaigh tancaeir bhreosla a ligean tríd. It seems that Denmark is in favor of that. Dealraíonn sé go bhfuil an Danmhairg ina fhabhar sin. Yes, and Britain – a former member state – but Germany is adamant about it. Tá, agus an Bhreatain – iar–bhallstát – ach tá an Ghearmáin patuar ina leith. The foreign ministers of the member states will discuss the matter today, Kallas said. Pléifidh airí gnóthaí eachtracha na mballstát an scéal inniu, a dúirt Kallas. It is unclear what exactly the European naval ships would do in that part of the Persian Gulf, but British Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested that a threatening nod to the Iranians might be enough. Níl sé soiléir cad go baileach a dhéanfadh na longa cabhlaigh ón Eoraip sa chuid sin de Mhurascaill na Peirse ach thug Príomh-Aire na Breataine Keir Starmer le tuiscint go mb’fhéidir go mba leor nod bagrach do na heolaigh san Iaráin. All this in light of demands from US President Donald Trump that other countries come to the aid of the Americans in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure that tankers are allowed to enter and exit again. É sin ar fad i bhfianaise éileamh ó Uachtarán na Stát Aontaithe Donald Trump go dtiocfadh tíortha eile i gcabhair ar na Meiriceánaigh i gCaolas Hormuz chun a chinntiú go mbeadh cead isteach ann agus cead amach as an athuair ag tancaeir. It is through this strait that a fifth of the world’s oil supplies and a fifth of the world’s liquefied gas are delivered every day. Is tríd an gcaolas sin a sheachadtar an cúigiú cuid de sholáthairtí ola an domhain agus an cúigiú cuid de ghás leachtaithe an domhain gach aon lá. In this episode, step inside Deir el-Medina, the remarkably well-preserved village of the artisans who built the royal tombs of ancient Egypt. Known in antiquity as Pa Demi or “the village”, this desert settlement near Thebes (modern Luxor) was home to the skilled workers of the Set Maat, the “Place of Truth,” where pharaohs like Tutankhamun, Ramesses II, Nefertari, and Hatshepsut were laid to rest. Through tomb art, legal documents, and everyday texts, Deir el-Medina offers one of the most intimate portraits of non-elite life in ancient Egypt. Explore the lives of three individuals whose stories survive in astonishing detail. Meet Ramose, the wealthiest man in the village, whose decorated tombs and appeals to fertility goddesses reveal private hopes for an heir. Follow his adopted successor, Qenherkhepeshef, a prolific scribe whose tomb preserved the famous “Book of Dreams,” a guide to omens written in red and black ink. Finally, Naunakhte, whose surviving will shows that women in the New Kingdom owned property and controlled how it was inherited. Offline Sources Cited: Blerk, Nicolaas J. 2021. Athruithe ar mheasúnú cáinte ag príomhoidí scoileanna speisialta. The Government’s decision to remove the requirement that a child must have a formal diagnosis of a specific disability to be enrolled in a special school has been criticised by principals of those schools. Tá cinneadh an Rialtais fáil réidh leis an riachtanas a bhíodh ann go mbeadh diagnóis fhoirmeálta de mhíchumas ar leith ag gasúr le clárú i scoil speisialta cáinte ag príomhoidí ar na scoileanna sin. The National Association of Special School Principals (NASSP) says a crucial part of the registration process has been sidelined and will undermine schools’ professional judgement on the appropriate placement and the most favourable learning outcomes for students. Deir Cumann na bPríomhoidí Scoileanna Speisialta (an NASSP) go bhfuil mír chinniúnach den phróiseas clárúcháin curtha go leataobh agus go ndéanfar dochar de bhreith ghairmiúil scoileanna ar an socrúchán cuí agus na torthaí foghlamtha is fabhraí do dhaltaí. The new regime was announced in December by the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley. Mí na Nollag a d’fhógair an tAire Leanaí, Míchumais agus Comhionannais Norma Foley an réimeas nua. The Minister said at the time that the Department was making the amendment to ensure that a child would have the support they needed, and to reduce the time spent on assessment. Dúirt an tAire ag an am gur chun a chinntiú go mbeadh an tacaíocht atá ag teastáil ó ghasúr, agus chun an t-am a chaitear ar mheasúnú a laghdú, a bhí an leasú á dhéanamh ag an Roinn. But the Principals’ Association says the decision was announced without consulting special schools at all. Ach deir Cumann na bPríomhoidí gur fógraíodh an cinneadh gan a ghabháil i gcomhairle in aon chor le scoileanna speisialta. NASSP Co-Chair Matt Swain says that “the capacity of special schools to plan and provide for and care for vulnerable children has been undermined.” Deir ComhChathaoirleach an NASSP Matt Swain go bhfuil “an bonn bainte de chumas scoileanna speisialta tabhairt faoi phleanáil agus soláthar agus cúram pháistí leochaileacha. “A professional report on a child’s ability is essential evidence to ensure that a student is placed in the most appropriate school setting.” Is bun-fhianaise í tuarascáil ghairimiúil ar chumas páiste le cinntiú go socraítear dalta san suíomh scolaíochta is oiriúnaigh.” The Association says that schools may now have to accept students without the school fully understanding the student’s diagnosis, developmental profile, or support needs, which would increase the risk of inappropriate placement. Deir an Cumann go mb’fhéidir go mbeadh ar scoileanna glacadh anois le daltaí gan tuiscint iomlán ag an scoil ar dhiagnóis, ná próifíl forbartha, ná riachtanais tacaíochta an dalta, rud a chuirfeadh leis an mbaol go ndéanfaí socrúchán míchuí. They say it would also disrupt team planning, resource allocation and personalized learning programs, and that the provision of education for all students could be disrupted. Chuirfí as freisin a deir siad do phleanáil foirne, dáileadh acmhainní agus cláir foghlamtha pearsantaithe, agus go mb’fhéidir go gcuirfí as don soláthar oideachais do gach dalta. Principals are also concerned that it will not be possible to ensure a safe learning environment, especially with the amount of pressure on teaching staff. Tá imní ar phríomhoidí freisin nach mbeifear inann láthair shábháilte foghlamtha a chinntiú, go háirid agus an oiread brú mar atá ar an bhfoireann teagaisc. They are urging the Department of Education to work with school management and leadership to come up with a better strategy. Tá siad ag impí ar an Roinn Oideachais gníomhú i gcuideachta le bainistíocht agus cinnireacht na scoileanna le theacht ar straitéis níos fearr.

Much like guest Sarah Aziza's beautiful memoir, The Hollow Half, this week's show covers a lot of territory and shines light on multiple topics of interest to memoirists. We explore memoir as art—what that means and whether memoirists should strive for their work to be art per se. Aziza's book is experimental and ambitious, and as such gives this week's episode delves into craft choices and process and more. Aziza shares her family history and how her grandmother started to show up in her dreams—and how this memoir took root and ultimately became the gift it is—timely, urgent, and beautiful. Sarah Aziza is a Palestinian American writer, translator, and artist with roots in ‘Ibdis and Deir al-Balah, Gaza. She is the author of the genre-bending memoir The Hollow Half, winner of the Palestine Book Award and named a Most Anticipated and Best Book of the Year by Vulture, Vanity Fair, Literary Hub, Elle, Electric Literature, and Mizna, among others.

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, the head of Realign For Palestine, an Atlantic Council project that challenges entrenched narratives in the Israel and Palestine discourse. This week, we dive into the 12-member National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. The technocratic council is headed by former Palestinian Authority deputy planning minister Ali Shaath. It is tasked with running daily affairs on the ground and providing services for Gazans in place of the Hamas terror group. The committee held its first meeting in Cairo on Thursday, but is currently barred by Israel from entering the Gaza Strip and its work remains in limbo as the Board of Peace begins its activities in Davos this week. We hear how the names on the technocratic council are relatively consensus figures -- among Gazan Palestinians -- and learn about Israel's objections to this committee and Trump's naming of Qatar and Turkey to the Gaza Executive Board. Alkhatib delves into the lack of popular Hamas support throughout the Strip, but points out the massive enforcement problem that the committee will face as the armed terrorist group maintains its hold. And so this week, we ask Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

Magid reports that despite the difficulties, the Trump administration wants to unveil the various components of phase two of the fragile Gaza ceasefire. This includes the technocratic Board of Peace, which currently has six countries on board from Europe and the Middle East. Magid notes that while senior aides to US President Donald Trump are sometimes frustrated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Middle East policies, the American leader's strategy is to keep the relationship warm, usually siding with the Israeli prime minister to keep moving forward on the various issues. After years of being stuck with third-generation cellphone service in the West Bank due to Israel's security control, Magid reports, Palestinians will now have access to 4G service. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Legal and settlements reporter Jeremy Sharon joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Defense Minister Israel Katz told settlements leaders on Tuesday that, “With God’s help when the time comes, we will also establish… pioneer groups in northern Gaza, in place of the settlements that were evacuated.” He later walked back his statements, but not before Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich doubled down on them and also pushed for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convince US President Donald Trump to recognize annexation of the West Bank in his upcoming US trip. We dive into the issues of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and West Bank in the first half of the program. The IPC famine monitoring organization stated on Friday that food security conditions in the entire Gaza Strip “remain critical,” in a new report covering the second half of October and all of November that classified the territory as being in its “Emergency” Phase 4 category — the fourth highest of its five levels of food insecurity. Sharon explains Israel's criticism of the report and raises the question of whether the Hamas-run Gazan Health Ministry has been manipulating its numbers of war casualties. Earlier this month, the High Court of Justice ruled unanimously 7-0 to annul the government’s decision to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, asserting that the government had failed to provide legal justification for its decision to change the way an AG is fired, and determining that the new system it designed was fundamentally flawed. Sharon reviews the decision and updates us on the ongoing existential crisis between the government and the court. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Day 694 - Legal expert Menachem Rosensaft: Israel is not committing genocide

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with legal expert on genocide Menachem Rosensaft. Rosensaft is an adjunct professor of law at Cornell Law School and lecturer-in-law at Columbia Law School, where he teaches the law of genocide -- since 2008 at Cornell and since 2011 at Columbia. A dedicated pro-Israel US Jewish leader, Rosensaft is the general counsel emeritus of the World Jewish Congress and has been part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, most notably sitting with PLO leader Yasser Arafat alongside four other American Jewish leaders in 1988, after which Arafat said he recognized the State of Israel's right to exist. Rosensaft discusses the important legal and rhetorical distinction between genocide and crimes against humanity or war crimes, feeling that the definition's precision is being diluted in popular use. We learn about the history and evolution of Raphael Lemkin's definition of genocide and the ripple effect it has caused. He emphasizes that Israel cannot be held out as the sole villain in the ongoing war, and explains how Hamas exhibits genocidal intent and ideology. However, the statements from a handful of far-right Israeli politicians is making South Africa's December 2023 legal case accusing the Jewish state of genocide much harder to win. Finally, he rails against the Israeli government's weaponization of the word "antisemitism" for all dissent against the Jewish state, but doubles down on the need for an ongoing peace process leading to a Palestinian state. And so this week, we ask genocide legal expert Menachem Rosensaft, what matters now. Katie talks to Palestinian journalist Abubaker Abed and American journalist Abby Martin about the U.S. backed Israeli genocide in Gaza, Trump's disgusting ban on visas for Palestinian children in need of medical treatment and his shielding of Israeli sex criminals. Abubaker Abed is a 22-year-old Palestinian journalist from Deir al-Balah, Gaza. He evacuated Gaza suffering from malnutrition and under threat for his reporting on Israel's genocide. Abed describes himself as an “accidental war correspondent” and hoped to become a sports journalist and commentator before the start of the war, but spent much of the last two years reporting on daily death and destruction. He is now based in Ireland. Abby Martin is a journalist, the host and creator of The Empire Files, director of Gaza Fights For Freedom and the forthcoming documentary Earth's Greatest Enemy. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: https://x.com/kthalps Follow Katie on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kthalps Follow Katie on TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@kthalps
