A new RGEV medium 2.0 platform with 800V architecture enables up to 466 miles of range, or 869 miles with an optional range extender.RENAULT MEGANE TO ADD RANGE-EXTENDER OPTIONThe next-generation Renault Mégane will be offered as both a fully electric and a range-extender model, with the EREV version targeting an 870-mile total range. The new platform cuts production costs by around 40% versus current EVs, and the cabin will feature a Google-co-developed software system with future AI integration for safety and driver assistance.ALPINE SETS OUT ITS ELECTRIC A110 PLANThe next-generation Alpine A110 will launch as a battery-electric model on the Alpine Performance Platform, using an 800V architecture, dual rear motors, and targeting over 500 bhp, a sub-1.5-tonne kerbweight, and up to 373 miles of range. Alpine is aiming for a lightweight, driver-focused character closer to the current A110 than a performance EV like the Taycan, with torque vectoring recalibrating every 10 milliseconds.MICRA 52KWH GETS FULL UK EV GRANTThe Nissan Micra 52kWh now qualifies for the full £3,750 UK Electric Car Grant following a switch to a Europe-sourced battery, bringing its entry price to £23,245. The entry-level 40kWh variant retains the lower £1,500 grant, with Micra pricing starting from £21,495, and first UK deliveries scheduled for April.VOLKSWAGEN REBRANDS ID.3 SUCCESSOR AS ID.3 NEOVolkswagen will rename the ID.3 successor the ID.3 Neo, with a world premiere set for mid-April, bringing the brand's latest software including One Pedal Driving, enhanced Travel Assist with traffic light detection, and Vehicle-to-Load capability. The same software platform will extend to upcoming smaller EVs including the ID. Polo, ID. Polo GTI, and ID. Cross.VOLKSWAGEN TARGETS 50,000 JOB CUTS BY 2030Volkswagen Group plans to cut 50,000 jobs by 2030, 43% more than previously disclosed, as profits hit their lowest point since the 2016 diesel scandal due to weak China demand and US tariffs. After spending roughly €12 billion on its in-house software unit CARIAD, VW has scaled back and turned to outside partners including Rivian, committing $5.8 billion to use Rivian's software stack in future EVs starting with the ID.1 in 2027.KIA ENDS NIRO EV WITH HYBRID REFRESHKia has discontinued the Niro EV with the model's latest refresh, which launches only as a hybrid in South Korea. Kia CEO Jung Won-Jung confirmed the decision, stating the company now focuses its EV efforts on the dedicated EV3-through-EV9 lineup.MG OPENS UK ORDERS FOR S9 PHEVMG has opened UK orders for the S9 PHEV, a seven-seat SUV priced from £34,205 that offers 62 miles of electric-only range and sits in the 9% benefit-in-kind tax band. It uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 24.7kWh battery supporting 7kW AC charging, undercutting the rival Chery Tiggo 9 by nearly £9,000.MG 4X BRINGS SEMI-SOLID BATTERY TO SUVSAIC has unveiled the MG 4X, an electric SUV based on the MG4 platform that features a semi-solid-state battery as standard across all trims. The battery uses manganese-based lithium-ion chemistry, reduces liquid electrolyte content to 5% for improved safety and longevity, and the MG 4X targets a CLTC range from 510 km (317 miles).BYD WEIGHS F1 AND LE MANS MOVEBYD is considering entering Formula 1 and the Le Mans World Endurance Championship, either by building its own team or acquiring an existing one, though no decision has been made. The move would complement BYD's performance brand Yangwang, whose U9 Xtreme recently set a production car speed record of 496.22 km/h at a German test track.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1286: Scout Motors discovers that American truck buyers want a generator backup with their electrons, Flexcar bets big on Atlanta's appetite for flexible wheels, and UPS makes the largest buyout offer in company history as it braces for life after Amazon.Scout Motors set out to be a pure EV brand, but the market had other plans. Of 160,000 reservations for the Terra pickup and Traveler SUV, 87% of buyers chose the EREV version — blowing past CEO Scott Keogh's expected 60/40 split. The EREV pairs a ~63 kWh battery with a four-cylinder generator for roughly 500 miles of total range, compared to about 350 for the BEV — and Scout will launch the EREV version first given the demand, with pricing starting below $60,000.Scout isn't alone in this pivot: Ford, Ram, and Jeep all have EREVs arriving this year, making range-extenders the de facto off-road electrification strategy in the U.S.The brand's direct-to-consumer model is drawing legal fire from VW's existing dealer networkFlexcar, the subscription-based leasing company, is expanding its footprint in Atlanta. The company's model offers drivers a middle ground between leasing, renting and owning. The model lets customers pay one monthly fee covering insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance and registration—often with no long-term contract and the option to swap vehicles as needs changeThey are now expanding its Atlanta footprint with two new locations in Marietta and Morrow, adding more than 25,000 square feet of retail and lot space. The company says Atlanta members have already logged over 150 million miles in Flexcar vehicles, making it one of the platform's fastest-growing markets.Flexcar offers 200+ vehicle options locally, including popular models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Altima and Volvo XC60.UPS just made the largest buyout offer in company history — sending voluntary severance packages worth $150,000 to more than 100,000 van drivers. It's the latest move in a major restructuring plan centered around one uncomfortable truth: Amazon, UPS's biggest customer, is becoming its biggest competitor.UPS announced plans to cut Amazon's package volume by 50% over 18 months, citing Amazon as "not our most profitable customer." Its margin, per CEO Carol Tomé, is "very dilutive to the US domestic business."As one supply chain professor put it: "Just because they lose Amazon doesn't mean there's nobody else out there. There's stuff to move, and there's warehouses that need to be filled."Today's show is brought to you by iPacket Value. Restaurant Reservation Data Tracking- AI-powered reservation apps like OpenTable quietly build detailed diner profiles from spending, orders, and habits, raising privacy concerns despite opt-out options and personalization benefits. Windows 10 Security Risks Post-Support- Windows 10 no longer receives security patches, making PCs vulnerable; users must upgrade, pay for limited extended updates, or rely heavily on third-party security tools. PornHub Premium Data Extortion- Hackers linked to ShinyHunters are extorting PornHub after stealing historical Premium user activity data, exposing sensitive viewing histories despite no compromise of payment information. Microsoft's Threat Actor Naming System- Microsoft classifies cyber threat actors using weather-themed names, grouping them by nation-state, financial motive, influence operations, or emerging threats for clearer security attribution. PayPal Applies for Banking Charter- PayPal seeks its own banking charter to expand small-business lending, offer insured deposits, and reduce reliance on partners amid broader U.S. financial deregulation. Ford Reboots F-150 Lightning as EREV- Ford ends F-150 Lightning production, planning a 700-mile extended-range electric reboot while investing heavily in battery storage and shifting aggressively toward hybrids.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1220: Ford slams the brakes on big EV bets and kills the Lightning, pivoting to hybrids and EREVs. HGreg proves luxury buyers don't need a separate dealership—just a smarter one. GM learns loyalty points are real money after a rewards loophole wipes out a loan.Show Notes with links:Ford just hit the brakes on its EV ambitions, announcing nearly $19.5 billion in charges as it pivots away from loss-heavy electric trucks.Ford will discontinue the all-electric F-150 Lightning, replacing it with an extended-range electric version that includes a gas engine. Its Kentucky EV battery plant will be repurposed to produce stationary battery storage for utilities, data centers, and renewable energy projects. The company has already lost $13 billion on EVs since 2023, and intends to shift to more hybrid and EREV models, including a mid-size pickup expected to launch in 2027.CEO Jim Farley: “Instead of plowing billions into the future knowing these large EVs will never make money, we are pivoting. “We now know enough about the U.S. market where we have a lot more certainty in this second inning” Canada-based dealer group HGreg has opened a Lux boutique inside its flagship Orlando used-car store, betting that high-line buyers want a premium experience without leaving the pre-owned ecosystem. The new HGreg Lux Orlando is a dealership-within-a-dealership, marking the group's fifth Lux location across Florida and California.HGreg is leaning into convenience and flexibility with same-day delivery, contactless buying, and even cryptocurrency payments.CEO John Hairabedian framed the move as emotional as much as strategic, saying, “For many of us, driving a luxury car is one of life's most memorable moments.”GM's loyalty program briefly turned into free money. A loophole in GM Rewards let users generate millions of points without spending a dime—most notably a Cadillac Escalade-V owner who used nearly $60,000 worth of points to pay down a GM Financial loan before GM shut it down.Users could earn up to 16,000 free points per account by completing surveys and watching GM videos, then repeat the process by creating new accounts.Points were instantly transferable, allowing millions to be stacked in minutes and funneled into a single account. The biggest problem for GM: points could be redeemed on service, accessories, and even vehicle loans—not just swag.GM fixed the exploit but honored the points, taking a page from the airlines: protect the program, not just the balance sheet.Thank you to today's sponsor, Mia. In this episode of The InEVitable by MotorTrend, hosts Jonny Lieberman and Ed Loh sit down with Marques McCammon, President of Karma Automotive, to talk about the company's reboot, its American-made ultra-luxury vision, and why the future isn't fully electric—it's EREV. Marques traces his incredible career from creating the Dodge Neon SRT-4 to pivotal roles at ASC, Saleen, Aptera, Wind River, Ricardo, and ultimately Karma. He reveals what he found when he arrived at Karma, why he shut everything down to rebuild quality and identity, and how Karma's new vehicles—including the upcoming Sera, Amaris, Isvara, and the four-motor Kaveya supercar—aim to blend emotional design, handcrafted luxury, and range-extended electric performance. Karma's goal? To become America's counterpart to Aston, McLaren, and Ferrari, built in Southern California with an experience-centered philosophy. Featuring deep cut industry stories—from SRT beginnings to Aptera's shutdown to why EREV is primed for a comeback—this is one of the most wide-ranging and insightful conversations we've had.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1190: Today we cover CarMax's executive shakeup amid disappointing guidance, Tesla shareholders' approval of Elon Musk's massive pay package, and how Scout Motors is seeing overwhelming demand for extended-range EVs.Show Notes with links:CarMax shares plunged 24% Thursday after the used car giant issued a grim forecast and announced a surprise leadership shakeup. With profits slipping and competition heating up, the company is betting on new leadership to stabilize its course and unlock its underlying potential.CarMax expects used unit sales to fall 8–12% and earnings to dip sharply to $0.18–$0.36 per share.CarMax stock is down nearly 50% in 2025, while competitors like Carvana are up over 50% year-to-date.CEO Bill Nash is stepping down; retail veteran David McCreight will serve as interim CEO.Former CEO Tom Folliard returns as interim executive chair, citing a need for hands-on guidance.“The company's recent results do not reflect its potential. Change is needed,” said Folliard, referencing CarMax's long-term brand strength and ability to perform at a higher level.Tesla shareholders just gave Elon Musk the green light on a massive pay package, potentially worth $1 trillion, in exchange for hitting big targets over the next decade. It's not a payday just yet, but it's a power move with long-term implications.Over 75% of participating shareholders approved the plan amid loud chants of “Elon! Elon!”The plan is tied to 12 performance-based tranches, each triggered by Tesla meeting specific operational, profit, and market cap goals — including a stretch target of reaching an $8.5 trillion valuation over the next decade.Tesla ran an unprecedented media campaign to secure votes, including TV ads and interviews from its typically quiet board chair.“Tesla is at an inflection point… this last year has been a critical one in our history,” said Chairwoman Robyn Denholm.Turns out, EV truck buyers want a little gas on the side. Over 80% of the 130,000 reservations for the upcoming Scout Terra and Traveler EVs are for versions with a gas-powered generator to boost range. The EREV models offer 150 miles of battery-only range, with a gas engine pushing total range to 500 miles.Customers are clearly favoring the “just in case” option, and CEO Scott Keogh isn't surprised: “The market has spoken.”On the idea of a gas-only Scout, Keogh didn't hesitate: “I don't see it. There's a lot of drama now—people saying the world was all EV, now it's going back to 100% internal combustion. The world is still heading electric.”He added, “The technology is there, the innovation is there… We want to make sure Scout is prepared for the next 100 years. We're not building a two-year brand.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
