Shoot us a Text.Episode #1190: Today we cover CarMax's executive shakeup amid disappointing guidance, Tesla shareholders' approval of Elon Musk's massive pay package, and how Scout Motors is seeing overwhelming demand for extended-range EVs.Show Notes with links:CarMax shares plunged 24% Thursday after the used car giant issued a grim forecast and announced a surprise leadership shakeup. With profits slipping and competition heating up, the company is betting on new leadership to stabilize its course and unlock its underlying potential.CarMax expects used unit sales to fall 8–12% and earnings to dip sharply to $0.18–$0.36 per share.CarMax stock is down nearly 50% in 2025, while competitors like Carvana are up over 50% year-to-date.CEO Bill Nash is stepping down; retail veteran David McCreight will serve as interim CEO.Former CEO Tom Folliard returns as interim executive chair, citing a need for hands-on guidance.“The company's recent results do not reflect its potential. Change is needed,” said Folliard, referencing CarMax's long-term brand strength and ability to perform at a higher level.Tesla shareholders just gave Elon Musk the green light on a massive pay package, potentially worth $1 trillion, in exchange for hitting big targets over the next decade. It's not a payday just yet, but it's a power move with long-term implications.Over 75% of participating shareholders approved the plan amid loud chants of “Elon! Elon!”The plan is tied to 12 performance-based tranches, each triggered by Tesla meeting specific operational, profit, and market cap goals — including a stretch target of reaching an $8.5 trillion valuation over the next decade.Tesla ran an unprecedented media campaign to secure votes, including TV ads and interviews from its typically quiet board chair.“Tesla is at an inflection point… this last year has been a critical one in our history,” said Chairwoman Robyn Denholm.Turns out, EV truck buyers want a little gas on the side. Over 80% of the 130,000 reservations for the upcoming Scout Terra and Traveler EVs are for versions with a gas-powered generator to boost range. The EREV models offer 150 miles of battery-only range, with a gas engine pushing total range to 500 miles.Customers are clearly favoring the “just in case” option, and CEO Scott Keogh isn't surprised: “The market has spoken.”On the idea of a gas-only Scout, Keogh didn't hesitate: “I don't see it. There's a lot of drama now—people saying the world was all EV, now it's going back to 100% internal combustion. The world is still heading electric.”He added, “The technology is there, the innovation is there… We want to make sure Scout is prepared for the next 100 years. We're not building a two-year brand.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Erev Yom Kippur – 2025 (Rabbi Burt Yellin)
In this moving Erev Yom Kippur sermon, Rabbi Debbie Stiel invites us to imagine the close of Yom Kippur as a moment of release, renewal, and “At-One-Ment.” Drawing on Torah, Talmud, and timeless wisdom, she explores repentance as both a solitary and communal journey—one that transforms our mistakes into the foundation for growth. Through stories of Moses, the High Priest, and our own human frailty, Rabbi Stiel reminds us that grace, forgiveness, and self-reflection open the path toward wholeness and a brighter new year.
Yud-Daled Tishrei - Erev Sukkos (20:12)
On Erev Yom Kippur, Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch ponders the nature of hope in these dark times and urges us to reject “syrupy saccharine” optimism and instead embrace the active, Jewish ideal of hope rooted in good deeds.
Summer heat overtakes the Midwest despite the fact that it's October. This wave of heat will last several days and will be followed by a cooler area of high pressure. Following the high pressure will be a return to another summer heat wave for much of the Midwest, but some of the Midwest may be right along the front seeing well above normal temperatures but not quite a heatwave. Either way rain will be limited during this holiday of succos, but there is a chance for rain Monday night and again Thursday night with minimal impacts. Temperature should remain within room temperature throughout most of the holiday but briefly dropping into the middle 50s for a couple nights in the mid part of the week. If temperatures do exceed 86° during the holiday it would occur towards the end. Until then - 86° heat or higher could be expected until the holiday starts.. this episode covers the most recent Midwest heatwave and covers some of the cities which received temperatures in the 90s for three consecutive days. Some say that this heat is connected to a marine Heat Wave taking place in the North Pacific.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weather-with-enthusiasm--4911017/support.

Tonight, as Yom Kippur (and its associated fast) begins, Philip Snell leads us in a very short Yom Kippur (Sabbath!) service. Because tonight's service is so short, the entire service is presented, not just the message.
Traditionally, we read the Book of Jonah on Yom Kippur because it forces us to face a hard question: do we want God's mercy only for ourselves—or also for our enemies?Jonah wanted wrath for Nineveh. God wanted mercy. And if we're honest, most of us live with the same tension: mercy for me, wrath for them. But here's the truth: if God's mercy isn't wide enough for our enemies, it isn't really mercy at all. In this bonus episode of the Everyday Judaism Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe covers the 17 sections of Siman 131 from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, detailing the laws and customs of Erev Yom Kippur, a day blending penitential preparation and festive joy in anticipation of Hashem's mercy on the Day of Atonement. Key practices include:Kaparos: A customary atonement ritual performed early in the morning, using a rooster for males, a hen for females, or money (preferred by Rabbi Wolbe for donation to Houston Tomchei Shabbos: https://tomchei-shabbat.com) to symbolize atonement, with white chickens preferred but not mandatory to avoid superstition. The ritual involves circling the item around the head while reciting prayers, emphasizing repentance over the act itself, with intestines offered to birds to invoke divine mercy.Festive Meals: A mitzvah to eat heartily, especially fish in the first meal and easily digestible foods like poultry in the second, avoiding spicy or warming foods, to equate eating on the 9th of Tishrei to fasting on the 10th.Seeking Forgiveness: Yom Kippur atones only for sins against Hashem, not interpersonal wrongs, requiring direct appeasement or mediation for forgiveness, with a call to forgive sincerely, as withholding forgiveness is un-Jewish. Rabbi Wolbe shares a story of Rabbi Mordechai Schwab's sensitivity in protecting his father from embarrassment, exemplifying righteous compassion.Mikvah Immersion: Men customarily immerse in a mikvah after midday for spiritual purity and repentance, with no barriers like jewelry allowed; women typically do not unless specific conditions apply.Candles and Clothing: Lighting candles for the home and synagogue, wearing Shabbos garments for Mincha, and donning a kittel (white robe) to evoke humility, with women wearing white but avoiding jewelry.Vidui and Blessings: Reciting the confession prayer after Mincha's silent Amidah, striking the chest for each sin, and parents blessing children with a special prayer for righteousness and a good life, found in the Machzor.Other Customs: Omitting certain prayers (e.g., Mizmor L'Todah, Avinu Malkeinu), receiving symbolic lashes in some Sephardic communities, and preparing the home with white tablecloths to honor Yom Kippur as a festival. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes starting Yom Kippur early, avoiding preparations for after the fast, and concludes with a story of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein's brother-in-law, illustrating how sponsoring a mikvah fulfills teshuvah's three steps (regret, acceptance, action), reinforcing the theme of actionable repentance.Rabbi Wolbe concludes with a blessing for complete atonement, a sweet and healthy new year, and acceptance of sincere repentance. To donate to Houston's Tomchei Shabbos: https://tomchei-shabbat.com_____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #60) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner!
