Take a hop across the pond to Ireland's Glenveagh National Park and Castle as we discuss one of its greatest mysteries. For as long as there has been economic inequality, there has been jealousy. From the outside looking in, it's hard to pity someone who seemingly has it all – like a castle for a summer home. Arthur Kingsley Porter aka “The Indiana Jones of Architecture” seemed to have it all, and although it can be easy to judge the Gatsby's of the world, appearances can be deceiving – they can prove that sometimes having it all just isn't enough. What would you do if you had the world, but desperately wanted to leave it all behind? We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back. This weekend we're looking back at a fairly curtailed sporting programme after the arrival of Storm Dennis put paid to a fair chunk of the fixtures set for the weekend. Leitrim U20's clash with Galway and Manor Rangers Connacht Cup game all fell foul while our Hurlers lost home advantage with a trip to Cavan. Supported by the Local Enterprise Office Leitrim ahead of Local Enterprise Week 2020 from 2nd-6th March. As well as the postponed Tony McGowan Road Race from Drumshanbo Athletic Club, the entire U13 & U17 club football programme was ripped up by the weather as the clubs will need another week to get their seasons up and running. The Road Race has been rescheduled for Sunday, the 8th March. On Friday evening Niall Morahan and his Sligo Rovers team mates got their SSE Airtricity League season up and running albeit slowly with a 1-0 reversal at the hands of north west rivals Finn Harps. We spoke to Declan Boyle of Leitrim Sports Partnership and Highland Radio as well as a former player with both clubs, after the final whistle. Manorhamilton's Muireann Devaney continued to develop her emerging reputation with the Irish soccer squads as she played a key role in both games against Iceland over the weekend in Waterford. As well as on impressing on the pitch, Muireann was awarded her Irish Cap for 2019 at a ceremony on Saturday evening. We spoke to one of the Irish U17 Coaching staff Dave Rooney after a successful camp for the Sligo Rovers player. In Rugby, Matthew Earley featured for Sligo Rugby as they restarted their assault on the play off places in Division 2B of the Energia All Ireland League. After two near misses against Blackrock College it was third time lucky for the westerners after they emerged from the mudbath in awful conditions in Stradbrook with the 10-5 win on Saturday evening. We spoke to Matthew Earley after the victory. Finally we talk to Anna from CrossFit Carrick about a Nutrition Seminar taking place in their gym on Thursday evening in Carrick on Shannon at 7:30pm. It's priced at €15 and open to all members of the community whether they are members of the gym or not. All are welcome. There is also a look at the results of the other games which did survive the weather over the last few days.
In the latest episode of Documentary On Newstalk, Producer Jim Doherty goes on a road-trip with Europes first, and Irelands only, cross-border, cross-community mobile library in: ‘Books Over Borders’. In 2004, Europe’s first cross-border mobile library took to the roads, serving rural communities in Donegal, Derry and Tyrone. Funded by the EU’s Peace Programme, it was jointly conceived by Donegal Library Service and Libraries NI. It is a prime example of co-operation between institutions who operate in different jurisdictions, working together to serve isolated border communities. A practical, all-island approach to pooling resources and providing a quality service. However, this innovative and valued community resource that has trundled along our border roads for the past 15 years is facing a few bumpy future. Brexit, and the unknown impact it will have on our borders and cross-border institutions, is creating some uncertainty and worry. The service has become an important feature in the lives of the villages, rural housing estates and small primary schools that it stops at during its 6 days a week schedule. Many people have come to rely on it, not just for books but for the social element it provides. Much of this is due to the cheerful and knowledgeable librarian, Denis Doherty, who has built strong links with his clients over the years. The mobile service also has a key role to play in promoting literacy, particularly among children who would otherwise be glued to a smartphone or tablet. The people who use the service have many reasons for doing so and would sorely miss it if it were gone. Jim Doherty spent some time travelling with the mobile library, calling at the schools and villages and meeting the people who use it. The border itself is still invisible and will hopefully remain so. As Denis pointed out over one of many cups of tea “People are the same no matter what side of a border you’re on”. BROADCAST TIMES: ‘Books Over Borders’ will be broadcast on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday August 18th at 7am, with repeat broadcast on Saturday 24th August at 9pm. PODCAST from www.newstalk.com after the first broadcast CREDITS: ‘Books Over Borders’ was produced, recorded, and edited by Jim Doherty - and was supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, through the television licence fee. ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Jim Doherty is a lecturer in Media Production in Derry’s North West Regional College and produces documentaries and radio features for broadcasters including RTE, BBC Radio Foyle, Newstalk and Highland Radio.
