In Episode 54 of 'Food for Europe!' we'll be discussing mental health in agriculture. Long working hours, financial worries, isolation and loneliness, are among the many reasons farmers are struggling. That leaves us to ask: What does it mean to be a farmer in today's world? At the same time, there is a lot that can be done – and the European Commission is aware of the problem. Our guests this time are Maria Gafo, Head of the Social Sustainability Unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development; David Meridith, Head of Agri-Food and Spatial Analysis at the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority; Peter Lundqvist, a professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Peter Hynes, a farmer from Ireland who has struggled with mental health issues.

In Season 5, Episode 33 of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois deliver a dynamic episode split between urgent food policy news and an in-depth interview with Jake Karls, Co-Founder and Chief Rainmaker of the powerhouse better-for-you brand Mid-Day Squares.Kicking off with the news segment, Sylvain and Michael break down Canada's approaching election and the glaring lack of meaningful agricultural policy across party platforms. While the NDP pushes for price freezes and a windfall tax on grocers, the Liberals and Conservatives offer little in the way of innovation or supply chain resilience. The hosts also tackle the impact of Ottawa's retaliatory tariffs, which drive food inflation and force Canadian grocers to de-Americanize sourcing. This effort comes with significant costs to consumers. They also discuss the potential discontinuation of the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup and the increasing scrutiny of petroleum-based food dyes like Red #40, calling science and public perception into question. The second half features an electrifying interview with Jake Karls, who updates listeners on Mid-Day Squares' journey since his last appearance. From humble condo kitchens beginning to producing over 130,000 chocolate bars daily, Jake shares how building an in-house manufacturing facility—rather than relying on co-packers—enabled product consistency, brand authenticity, and rapid scaling. He dives into the challenges of being a media-first company, the evolution of its storytelling strategy, and its pivot into new product categories beyond chocolate.Jake opens up about battling cocoa price surges, securing supply chains, and staying BRC-certified. He also previews Mid-Day Squares' upcoming expansion to triple output capacity, pushing the brand toward $225 million in potential revenue. The conversation closes on a powerful note about the importance of storytelling in entrepreneurship and building brand trust at scale.Whether you're a CPG entrepreneur, policy wonk, or retail trend-watcher, this episode offers an unfiltered look at macro-level food system dynamics and the bold entrepreneurial journey reshaping the snack aisle across North America. Blanket tariffs — like the proposed 25 per cent tariffs on all imports into the United States from Canada, set to come into place March 4 – affect every single industry. However, although the effects on almost all of Canada's industries are significant and negative, they're also all unique. Those who work in export commodities know that these complexities extend beyond consumer-level "buy Canadian" sentiment. In this special episode of AgAnnex Talks, we discuss the unique ways in which the agriculture, agri-food and growing sectors would be affected by the planned tariffs. They discuss the subsectors that would be most affected, how our current trade processes work at a granular level, what lesser-known factors have industry groups worried and how these tariffs fit into an already at-times fraught context when it comes to labour, infrastructure and more.Hosts Bree Rody (Manure Manager, Potatoes in Canada and Drainage Contractor editor) and Amy Kouniakis (Greenhouse Canada editor) also feature economic perspectives that touch on historic precedence of both tariff and non-tariff-related trade disruptions and what the industry learned from those times, innovation opportunities and just why the U.S. became such an important trade partner in the first place.Today's guests of AgAnnex Talks are Colin Hornby, GM of Keystone Ag Producers, Victoria Stamper, GM of United Potato Growers of Canada and Amanda Norris, senior economist with Farm Credit Canada

Autocoupler, based in Co. Kilkenny, was today announced as the winner of the 2025 AgTechUCD One to Watch Award at the completion of University College Dublin's (UCD) fourth AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme at UCD Lyons Farm. The patented Autocoupler system allows a loader to attach to any agricultural implement, automatically coupling the loader's hydraulic circuit to the implement and then locking the implement in place with the loader's locking system. The novel Autocoupler system makes changing implements quick and easy, with no delays or time loss in comparison to existing manual and time-consuming systems. In addition, the Autocoupler system has safety advantages over conventional systems as the operator does not have to leave the cab of the machine when attaching or disconnecting any attachment or implement. The 12-week AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme, tailored to address the needs and challenges facing AgTech and Agrifood start-ups, was focused on fast tracking the business development and leadership skills of participants and on providing them with the support and guidance needed to accelerate the growth and development of their start-ups. Gary Ryan, Director, AgTechUCD, said, "I would like to congratulate Autocoupler, on being named the overall winner of our fourth AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme. This programme supports the commercial development of the participating start-ups by helping them to further develop their innovative solutions, enhance their marketplace visibility, attract new customers and investors and build new partnerships at home and further afield. I wish Autocoupler every success for the future as they continue their entrepreneurial journey." Seamus Kenny, founder, Autocoupler, said, "It is a great honour for me to accept the 2025 AgTechUCD One to Watch Award following the completion of the latest AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme. Our next step is to target the agricultural and construction implement manufacture market with our novel system which allows loader operators to change an implement without leaving their seat, in 4 seconds, at the touch of a button." He added, "I would like to thank AgTechUCD and Enterprise Ireland for their ongoing support and also to thank Noreside Engineering Group, who have supported the physical engineering and prototype phase of developing the Autocoupler system, and acknowledge the financial support and advice received from the Kilkenny Local Enterprise Office." Thirty-four (34) start-ups have now completed the four AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme delivered to date. Start-ups which have completed the programmes include; Cotter AgriTech, Moonsyst, MyGug, OptaHaul, Pitseal, Proveye, Silicate, and TrojanTrack. AgTechUCD, which is part of NovaUCD, is focused on promoting and accelerating the launch and scaling of start-ups and SMEs, in Ireland and internationally, with disruptive innovations in the agtech, agri-food and vettech sectors, as they build their innovative businesses into leading job creating companies on the global stage. AgTechUCD, funded through the Regional Enterprise Development Fund administered by Enterprise Ireland, supports founding entrepreneurs as they build their innovative businesses into leading enterprises, through the AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme, and by providing access to incubation offices and labs and preferred access to on-farm testing for new products and services at UCD Lyons Farm. The AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme included dedicated business development workshops and investor readiness training, mentoring from industry experts and business advisors, guest speakers and facilitated introductions to AgTechUCD's venture capital and business angel networks. From personal anecdotes to broader industry implications, we explore whether such measures can boost consumer spending.Next, we dissect Canada's Fall Economic Statement (FES) and the new finance minister's debut, questioning the impact of fiscal policy changes, including interest rate cuts, on the agri-food, grocery, and restaurant sectors. We also unpack key proposals like the reinstated Accelerated Investment Incentive (AII) and its significance for agri-business innovation.Shifting gears, Michael and Sylvain examine controversial news stories, including CFIA algorithmic oversight and carbon tax impacts on food prices. On a brighter note, we celebrate Quebec's $100 million initiative to support young agricultural entrepreneurs, signalling hope for the future of farming. As they bid farewell to 2024, the hosts tease their highly anticipated predictions episode, returning on January 9th. With plenty of gratitude for Caddle and our listeners, they close the season by reflecting on the stories that defined Canada's food systems this year.  The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. In the latest episode of The Food Professor Podcast, Michael LeBlanc and Sylvain Charlebois discuss the implications of Donald Trump's return to the U.S. presidency on the agri-food sector. We explore how his administration may impact trade, environmental policies, and Canadian food security. Trump's presidency, with a Republican-controlled Congress, signals potential changes in tariffs, which could affect Canada's agricultural industry. Sylvain highlights the likelihood of a U.S. push for a more merger-friendly economy, possibly accelerating industry consolidation, including the grocery sector. Our guest recorded live in Montreal at the SIAL Food Innovation show is Michael Chadwick with Quebec's Fidelio ERP system, talking about digital transformation and productivity for Canada's food manufacturers. The conversation also delves into Canada's unique challenges, including Trudeau's environmental policies, particularly carbon taxes, which Sylvain argues have driven Canadian wholesale food prices higher than in the U.S. Trump's potential to reduce regulatory costs and energy prices in the U.S. may create competitive challenges for Canadian agriculture, especially with differing environmental stances.Lastly, we touch on the international stage, noting Trump's relationships with global leaders like Vladimir Putin and his possible influence on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, which could have significant implications for global food security. They conclude by speculating how Canada's upcoming federal policies must adapt to this shifting U.S. landscape. The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. A groundbreaking new project, AgriFood Connect, has been launched to address the challenges facing the agriculture and food sector in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The AgriFood Connect project aims to accelerate innovation in the AgriFood and AgriTech industries by bridging the gap between innovative research and practical, market-ready solutions for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), early-stage companies, food manufacturers, and farmers. It also aims to scale cross-border collaboration among SMEs and other players such as universities, third-sector organisations and government agencies using cluster and networking supports. This project is supported by InterTradeIreland's Synergy Programme, Synergy is a cross-border cluster initiative. Led by Munster Technological University's AgriTech Ireland Cluster and the Agri-Food Quest Competence Centre (hosted by Queen University Belfast), the project aims to tackle issues within the agriculture and food production sectors. According to MTU's Agritech Ireland Cluster, gaps remain in translating research findings into viable, scalable solutions for the industry. SMEs involved in agriculture and food production often struggle to adopt new technologies due to a lack of resources, networks, and expertise, resulting in missed opportunities for growth, sustainability and increased productivity. These challenges pose a risk not only to the competitiveness of SMEs but also to the long-term sustainability and economic resilience of the sector. Agrifood Connect will be rolled out in four phases, each focused on building strong partnerships and translating research into tangible, market-ready solutions. By connecting Irish and Northern Irish SMEs and RPOs into collaborative networks, AgriFood Connect will create a platform for knowledge exchange, enabling stakeholders to work together and address common challenges within the supply chain. Commenting on the launch, Alison Currie, Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at InterTradeIreland said: "InterTradeIreland welcome this opportunity to support the AgriTech Ireland Cluster and AgriFood Quest Competence Centre with the delivery of the AgriFood Connect project. The clusters are working collaboratively on addressing critical challenges faced in the agri-food sector by fostering a strong, cross-border innovation ecosystem that bridges the gap between research and practical application. The creation of this ecosystem will help convert challenges into solutions resulting in competitiveness and sustainable growth for SMEs within the agriculture and food sectors across the island." Kieran O'Donoghue, Educational Outreach Manager, AgriTech Ireland Cluster, said: "We are excited to have secured InterTradeIreland support for this unique cross-border project, which will connect AgriTech and FoodTech researchers and industry. This initiative marks a significant step forward in fostering collaborative innovation across the island, bringing together the best minds from research and industry to drive innovation in agriculture and food production. By working together, we are not only connecting and strengthening the ties between key stakeholders across Ireland but also paving the way for advancements that will enhance both sustainability and productivity across the agricultural and food sectors, positioning Ireland as a global leader in AgriFood innovation." According to Stephane Durane, Manager, Agri-Food Quest Competence Centre: "This AgriFood Connect project provides an exciting opportunity to build on many existing activities and structures that help drive commercialisation to better connect and build an ecosystem for innovation in AgriTech and FoodTech. Many programmes are gaining traction across Ireland, such as Momentum One Zero (One Health Innovation Centre), AgriTech Ireland Cluster, Food-I and Climate+ co-centres. Connecting and building capacity to foster collaboration across these centres and the wider ecosystem provides great poten...
