Did you know that at Carlisle Circus in North Belfast sits a former church building which is on a World Monuments watch list that once featured other iconic sites such as the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal? Well, it's true. Carlisle Memorial Methodist Church serves as a sober reminder of the Belfast's architectural legacy and its troubled past. Designed in the Gothic Revival style by noted architect WH Lynn and completed in 1875, the church was home to one of the largest Methodist congregations in Belfast. The sandstone and limestone exterior of the building was renovated in 1966, but the church ceased to be used as a place of worship by 1980, a consequence of the declining congregation and its location at a major interface between Catholic and Protestant populations. At the heart of one of the most troubled parts of Belfast, the congregation shrank rapidly during the late 1960s and 1970s. The church trustees sold the adjacent Church Halls in the late 1970s and finally closed the church in the 1980s.Since then, Carlisle Memorial has been subject to both renovation and rejuvenation from Belfast Buildings Trust and I was delighted when they reached out to me with the idea of creating an episode together for the Historical Belfast Podcast. The Trust introduced me to Emily Brando from Germany who has been carrying out extensive research on the history of the church, and I began by asking her to explain how exactly she came to be involved in researching a church building in Belfast…So, having heard from Emily about the remarkable backstory of Carlisle Memorial Church I decided to pay the building a visit for myself to find out what's going on there at present, but also what the future holds for the site. I was met there by Cara Jones who is the Project and Engagement Officer for the Belfast Buildings Trust and I began by asking her to give me sense of the baron years at Carlisle Memorial since the 1980s… Send us a textSupport the show

Send us a Text Message.Ed Hidalgo is an advisor, speaker, and trainer for school districts seeking to embed career-related teaching and learning within school culture.  Ed's journey in career education began in 2016 at the University of San Diego, where he worked as the Director of the World of Work initiative with researchers, K12 leaders, and business partners to develop the theory of change for integrating career-related learning across K12 systems. He was hired by the Cajon Valley Union School District, a public school district of 28 schools and 18,000 students, as the Chief Innovation and Engagement Officer. Here, Ed led the deployment of the career development model with teachers, counselors, parents, and classified staff. Before his career in education, he devoted nearly two decades to corporate human resources and talent acquisition. These years were pivotal, during which he oversaw the recruitment of a substantial number of contingent employees, initiated a corporate career counseling initiative benefiting a significant portion of permanent staff, and established the Thinkabit STEM Maker Space, catering to a very large number of middle school students. These experiences served as the catalyst for his transition into K12 career development. Today, his work with the team at Educators Cooperative connects him to clients and partners across a wide range of schools, nonprofit organizations, workforce boards, education technology companies, and students and families.  Topics we discussed during the recording included: • The improved perception of temp or contingent workforce and how they can be a part of the staffing plans made by companies. • The same skills/characteristics are needed to be hired as a contingent worker as a regular FT worker. Can you do the job? This is the question the candidate must be able to answer. • Finding a job – contingent or FT – is hard work. One of the keys to success in the process is consistency in your efforts. • Ed had a great story of a candidate who came in late on a Friday to find work – the guy was not "ready" that day – Ed gave some coaching to him, and when he returned, he was hired and after some time promoted into a supervisor role – you have to listen to this – I think it says there is a spot for everyone. • You need to be specific on what you want to do – no such position as "I can do anything."  For more information on Ed, go to 1. Jude Piesse moved to Shrewsbury in Shropshire when her job changed, but it was only when she went for a walk alongside the river near her new house that she discovered she was living beside what had once been the garden where Charles Darwin spent his childhood. Much of the original 7 acres of the garden has been built on, but the original house, The Mount, still exists. It has been used as offices for many decades and has only recently been bought and is being renovated with a view to opening it up to the public with a museum and café. Whilst some local people know about the existence of the house and garden, most people associate Charles Darwin with Down House in Kent where he brought up his own family. Inspired by her discovery, Jude researched the story of the house and garden, learning about the women and the gardeners who were also a part of Darwin's upbrigning. What becomes clear in this revealing journey is the enormous influence the garden had on a young boy in inspiring his curiosity and fascination with the natural world, which ultimately led to the publication of The Origin of Species. Featuring Bibbs Cameron, researcher at Shrewsbury Civic Society; John Hughes, Darwin House Museum Project Manager and Dr Cath Price, Engagement Officer at Shropshire Wildlife Trust. In this episode, we investigate the rise of Alternative Funding Programs (AFPs) that bypass coverage for vital specialty drugs. Kyle Crowell, an expert consultant on AFPs, discusses how payers avoid their responsibility for costs by collaborating with third-party companies to exclude specific drug coverage and directing patients towards manufacturer-sponsored patient assistance programs (PAPs). Patient advocate, Amy Niles from the PAN Foundation, describes how the mounting tension caused by AFPs are leaving patients to navigate the uncertain waters of their medication coverage and access, potentially risking their health and even their lives. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is on a mission to develop the fastest-growing and most equitable economy in the country. With technology progressing faster than ever alongside a tight labor market, Kerry Ebersole Singh has an important job as MEDC's Chief Talent Solutions & Engagement Officer. We sat down with Kerry to discover how the MEDC is addressing the workforce needs of the state's employers. It's an episode full of insights, takeaways and strategies every state government, employer and education system can learn from.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Workforce development requires short-term and long-term strategies: For sustainable economic growth, states should build talent strategies that pay off in the short term and in decades to come. Short-term efforts include incumbent workforce training, bootcamps and certification programs, and technical/community colleges partnerships. Long-term strategies seek to build more STEM-focused learning in K-12 education.Certifications play an important role in this era of lifelong learning: In today's workforce, every individual will have to continually learn new skills to remain current throughout their career. In response, more employers are embracing third-party credentials that will ensure their employees have the industry-standard skills needed. Employers can then align their employee training efforts with these credentials to help those individuals progress in their career.Industry, education, and government can work cohesively to align needs and resources: Employers: sit down with the president and deans of your local college and clearly articulate your workforce needs. Contact your local and state economic development organizations to discover resources available for your workforce needs. In this episode, Kerry shares a unique project the MEDC has done to connect the needs of employers with the resources available at each university and college in Michigan.Resources Mentioned in this EpisodeLearn more about The Michigander EV Scholars programSee all resources from the Talent Action Team: https://www.michiganbusiness.org/talent-action-team/Connect with MEDC online:Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  Facebook  |  Instagram  |  YouTubeView episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/medc/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

"Let's Talk Race" emerged from the Richland (SC) Public Library as a response to the tragic events of 2015, including the murders of Walter Scott and the Charleston Emmanuel AME Church shooting. In the aftermath of these incidents, many South Carolinians were left grappling with a mix of emotions—anger, confusion, and fear. As the community sought ways to process and heal, the library took a proactive approach. The library's response was to initiate small dialogue circles, providing a safe haven for conversations about race. These circles aimed to foster understanding and empathy in the face of challenging circumstances. Over time, this grassroots effort grew into a movement. Since then, the Richland Library has organized over 250 events and community discussions, engaging more than 4,000 participants. The impact of these conversations extended beyond the library's walls, prompting the library team to create a free curriculum, designed to be utilized by libraries and groups across the country. In this episode, we talk with Tamara King, Chief Equity and Engagement Officer, and Heather McCue, Children's and Teens Services Manager at RPL. Join us as we delve into the roots and evolution of "Let's Talk Race," exploring how it has transformed into a platform for change—nurturing empathy and unity through candid conversations about race.
