This episode featured special guest, Mark Boersma, an entrepreneurial businessman who attributes his success, in part, to having "social autism"…a label David immediately tried to confer on himself. In addition to being the Wizard's best friend, Mark introduced us to the concept of "pusty" and David offered that his way of calling someone stupid is using the gentler, less obvious term, "jackwagon." Along the way Mark asked David remarkably few questions in order to get insights on his personality (a longtime struggle pod-partner Dr. Dave has worked on). If Mark's 2-question, 17-second test fascinates you like it does us, here's the website link for your own exploration:  https://www.life-gps.org/#/

Crossroads at the Empty Tomb Service is viewable at: I never really thought about Easter or the empty tomb being a crossroads moment until this year. Maybe it’s because of our Lenten theme or maybe it’s because of the difficult year we’ve all faced in light of the pandemic or maybe because Mark saw it this way. There is something vastly different about the way Mark tells the resurrection story, and you can tell that it was viewed as odd by others from pretty early on. If you look in your Bible, you will see what is considered the original ending of Mark (16:8a) followed by “the shorter ending” (16:8b) and “the longer ending” (16:9-20). Mark’s original ending is abrupt and awkward, and to me, these additions seem an attempt to sanitize that. If Mark’s ending is a bit messy, I assume there’s a reason for that… and the reason might be you! So join us on Easter Sunday (whether online or in person) to hear the Resurrection according to Mark and see why! Join us to Worship Where You Are this Sunday at 9AM & 11AM or for our in-person SONrise Services at 9AM & 11AM (sign up details below). The scriptures for this Easter Sunday are 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 and Mark 16:1-8. Bring an empty cross, butterfly, egg or Easter lily to your home altar as a symbol of the resurrection and the crossroads presented by the empty tomb. We give thanks to WWYA Worship Leaders, Ralph & Ellie Erchinger. As we celebrate Holy Communion, remember to make or buy bread and wine/juice.

Mark O’Hara stepped out to step up the family business. Is this wisdom for future generations of Buzz listeners? Mark served his time at both the US Army and Anheuser-Busch before rejoining Anderson Pest Solutions. Mark built on his non-pest experience to rise in the ranks at Anderson. His dad started it, his brother primed it, and Mark and his nephew, JT Barnard, scaled it. Mark and his nephew ultimately sold Anderson to Rentokil in 2015 with a $21M top-line mark. People differentiate, not materials. Mark gives tangible examples of culture in this Boardroom conversation. Recruitment became a critical function as the business thrived. Mark tips his hand at a recruitment target outside of pest control. What is Mark’s take on leveraging employees’ relationships to grow the organization? What about recruiting from within the industry? He even shines light on the inevitable blinders surrounding employee interviews. Have you ever felt like sticking your neck out to hire someone? Mark suggests a solution for that. It is hard to fathom building commercial sales machine without trials and tribulations. The conference room conversation doesn’t shy away from ‘sales vs service’. Town hall meetings, individual performance metrics, and committee feedback built the accountability culture. From grading leads to fixing funnel flow, Anderson’s sales process evolved. Patrick Quigley would be proud to hear that Mark refers to hot buttons and asking for the signature in this visit.  In battle-field fashion, Mark would often start new projects and then walk away. Mark’s entrepreneurial spirit led to switching course too often. It may not have been self-realized though. As ‘The Way of the Shepherd’ and ‘The 4 Disciplines of Execution’ were recommended to him, he gives his seal of approval to Buzz listeners. When the Chicago climate suppressed pest pressure, how did Mark manage overtime discrimination? In Episode 5, Tony Sfreddo discussed segregating his commercial and residential technicians. How did Anderson structure its technicians’ routes? If Mark was dropped into a $2-3 million business today, how would he think about scaling that business? Tangible takeaways abound in this interview with another PCT Top 100 Great. Co-Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Dylan Seals of hdaudiopost.com

Bible Study: Mark 1:1

Holy Awkward Silence

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2020 7:50

We start our series on the Gospel of Mark. Here is some information to help with understanding the date, location, and author of the Gospel of Mark. Date: One of the first parts of the puzzle comes from looking at the other Gospels. Matthew reproduces 606 of Mark's 661 verses and Luke reproduces 320 of Mark's verses Matthew uses nearly 51% of Mark's actual words and Luke uses 53% of Mark's actual words. This leads us to a couple of possibilities. Either all 3 Gospels are using the same source material or Matthew and Luke used Mark as common source material. The consensus among most scholars is that Matthew and Luke used Mark as source material to write their Gospels, Most likely making Mark the first of the Gospels written. However, this doesn't mean that there weren't other sources that Mark drew from. Most likely Mark drew from the Church's oral tradition. There is also a great deal of evidence that the author of Mark actually got all of the information directly from Peter himself. Early church tradition connects Peter with the Gospel of Mark and indicates that John Mark of Acts, (Act 12:12,25; 15:37, 39) was possibly the author The earliest evidence we have of this is from a Bishop in the 2nd century named Papias who we know was born about 60 A.D. In Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History (3.39), Papias states that Mark became Peter's interpreter and wrote accurately, but not in order, all that he had remembered of the things said and done by the Lord. He also stated that Mark did not see Jesus, meaning he was not an eyewitness to the life of Jesus. On top of this, the connection appears over and over again in the early church. It is seen in Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen ( who argues that 1 Peter 5:13 is referring to the same Mark who wrote the Gospel), Tertullian, Jerome, and Augustine who lived to 430 AD. So in the first several centuries many of the big names in the church connected Peter to the Gospel of Mark. The Text: There are some clues form the text that helps us in determining the date of authorship as well. Mark's Gospel is concerned with suffering (we will dive into this as we get into the text). As an example, we can look at the suffering of John the Baptist and Jesus, and the disciples. The emphasis of this could be because the first readers of the Gospel were a suffering community. Nero reigned Rome from 54 to 68 AD and was famous for his persecution of Christians. If Mark was indeed writing from Rome He and his community would have been well aware of what it meant to suffer for their faith. The Jewish War or the Great Revolt started in 66 AD. The Jewish War was a revolt against Roman rule and led to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. Mark 13…also known as the Markan Apocalypse is full of allusions to the war and the destruction of the temple. Scholars argue about whether the Gospel pre-dates or post-dates the war, the dates of the war fit within our 55-75 time frame. Location: Papias, Clement, Irenaeus, Origin, all the guys we have gone over believe Rome to be the place of Origin for Mark's letter. If we connect Mark to Peter and Peter to Rome at the end of his life, then Rome is the place for these guys and for the tradition of the Church. The text itself seems to support a non-Jewish location because Mark periodically stops to explain Jewish customs (Mark 7:3-4 as an example), to translate Aramaic expressions (Mark 5:41). This also indicates that the Gospel would have been intended to a gentile community as Jews wouldn't really need to have these things explained to them. These are things a non-Jewish person might need help in understanding. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/holyawkwardsilence/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/holyawkwardsilence/support

TSE 1094: Sales From The Street - "Replacement Picture"

The Sales Evangelist

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2019 34:53

Sellers have built up tension and fears which prevent us from reaching our true potential, but if we create a replacement picture of what success will look like, we'll move toward positive change. Mark Panciera is a third-generation funeral director, so he says he has a caregiver's heart, but he has grown into being a sales maven. He's a partner of the Pacific Institute, a performance consulting firm with an international footprint, where he helps leaders tap into their potential to drive greater personal and professional performance. Meaningful change All meaningful, lasting change starts within ourselves and then works its way out. That equates to mindset or habits, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations. It's focusing on the beliefs that are propelling us to our greater good or our higher purpose. It's about the pictures that we hold in our mind. Sometimes as sales reps we get focused only on closing the deal. Even before that, we may routinely tell ourselves garbage that keeps us from reaching our potential. What grows naturally Think about what grows naturally in a garden: weeds. Likewise, we have a natural inclination. We've got this chatterbox in our minds that acts as a little committee telling us what we can and can't accomplish. Don't try new things. Don't leave your comfort zone. You'll be ridiculed if you fail.  Mark was full of trepidation when he moved from the caregiving role to transacting business with leaders around the globe. He realized that his self-talk was holding him back. Mark couldn't imagine that he could teach them anything that they didn't already know. He had to feel the fear and then move anyway. Mark needed to run toward the roar. It's more easily said than done, but he realized that he had a choice to become more transactionally oriented or to stay where he was. He could either do it or not. Adult choices have adult consequences. You will have consequences to your choice to make a solicitation or do an outreach or dial just one more time despite a bunch of "no" answers. Higher purpose Mark knows that ultimately his higher purpose is served because he will be a caregiver to a larger audience when he transacts business. He chooses to say yes to that purpose because beyond the fear or resistance or limiting beliefs or self-talk is the replacement picture that emerges when he serves his higher purpose. [Tweet "We move toward and become like the things we think about. So replace the negative self-talk with positivity and focus on what it's going to look like, smell like, or taste like when you succeed. #Success"] When you're helping people and giving them the tools to think and perform differently, create a "want to" mentality instead of a "have to" mentality. When people are forced to do something, they subconsciously push back on those efforts. It's even true when you're forcing yourself to do something. So don't push yourself. Create a "want to" mentality. Have some fun doing it. Most importantly, move toward that replacement picture of what success is going to look like. Burning the boats If Mark hadn't moved toward a replacement picture, he wouldn't have a new career. He stretched himself out of a major comfort zone. His replacement picture was stronger in this new realm. He had to rebrand himself to do outreach because in funeral services people come to you. Performance consulting was a different story. He had to create a "want to" mentality for himself so he could create a different mindset. Mark had to recast his habits and attitudes toward selling. He had to feel the fear of something he had never done before and run toward the roar. Imposter syndrome Mark wrestled with imposter syndrome because he moved from caring for the dead to breathing life into leaders around the globe. He felt like a poser. He worked feverishly once he painted the replacement picture to garner the knowledge necessary to built a skill set of competency in this realm. Mark surrounded himself with the right consultants, coaches, and leaders and poured himself into reading, listening, and going to conferences. Because we think in pictures, he had to see himself in a new picture and then move toward it. Armor Make sure you've got your armor around you and don't take it personally when you hear a "no." Even if the people around you like family or friends don't understand what you're doing, be convicted based upon your own mindset. You're going to deal with cognitive dissonance which will cause you to feel like you're out of order. But just as your muscles will feel fatigued and tired when you exercise, you're going to feel fatigued if you move to a higher level of performance. Moving through fear Imagine going to a networking event. Some folks have resistance in their minds to interacting with strangers and possibly being rejected. We worry about forgetting people's names or not being invited in. We might be a little clunky with our conversations. If you think about the negative things, that's where you'll end up. It's like a kid learning to ride a bike. If you tell them to watch out for cracks they'll become so worried about the cracks they'll end up there. So now take that same concept to a networking event and realize that if you focus solely on the things you don't want to happen, you'll manifest them because the brain doesn't know the difference between something vividly imagined and an actual experience. Instead, replace those pictures with how you want things to actually go. I'm going to connect with someone with a cool story. I'll hear a great speaker. I'm going to learn something wonderful. And in the end, even if none of that happens, you're going to celebrate the fact that you actually acted. That success will give you the energy to move forward the next time at the very least. Faith and brain science As a person of faith, I often pray, "Help me to be led to someone today who can benefit from my product or service." It puts me in the mindset to find someone who needs my help. Whether you believe it's mysticism or something else, you can drive synaptic firings of your brain and create new neural pathways. You can manifest a morphing of your brain. Changing habits People often ask how long it takes to change a habit, but Mark believes it has to do with quantity of repetition rather than quantity of time. All habits are based on behaviors which are based on beliefs. Go back to the core thinking that drove your beliefs, that drove your behaviors, that drove your habits. Conduct a self-examination. Do you do a lot of creative avoidance? Do you do a lot of research? Distal vs. proximal You can't get 50 cold calls at once but you can start with the first one. Realize that there are proximal goals and distal goals. The 50 cold calls you need to make are distal goals that are in the distance. At the end of the day, you need to have that 50 done, but look at the proximal goal to make sure you're accomplishing them, and then celebrate them once you do. If you're looking at 50, how many do you need to make per hour? Game your own system. Create habits around that. Stop with the creative avoidance and get after the first 10 because those first 10 will motivate you and move you toward the next cup of coffee or the walk around the office. Build momentum You only steal second base by getting your foot off of first. Make the first call and commit within your first 10 minutes in the office in order to build momentum. Then jog around the block and keep your energy up. Admiral William McRaven gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas in which he encouraged students to make their beds first thing in the morning. If you do, you can never look back on your day and fear that you didn't succeed at something. Focus on your strongest picture and if you're compelled to believe that what you're selling can make people better then focus on that. Find your why or your north star. Once you have that prize in mind, get after it. You said that some of the early patristic writers believed that John the Baptist was a heretic and even the spiritual mentor of Simon Magus and Dositheus. Might this version imply the canonical gospels had not yet been written? Why do you think Matt changes Mark to make the fig tree wither away immediately rather than over the course of a day?  If Mark is a Paulinist Gospel how can the baptism be adoptionistic which seems to be a doctrine popular among Jewish Christians like the Ebionites?  I wondered if the baptism might not better be seen as the point where the man Jesus is possessed w/ the spirit (the Christ) which some Gnostics believed, what Bart Ehrman calls separationism.  What say ye? What does the Geek think is going on with Jacob and Laban's flock in Genesis 30? Why would the gospel writers in the second century have to embellish the Jerusalem siege and/or the Bar Kochba revolt and not have Jesus describe in detail what will happen just like how Josephus described it since the evidence is strong that the gospel writers have Josephus in front of them while writing the four gospels. Also, why would the writer of Luke dismiss the death of James? Is there any real proof for Burton Mackâ??s hypotheses re Q?

After reviewing Mark’s scores on the Brief Mood Survey, the Empathy phase of the session unfolds. During this phase of the session, David and Jill will not try to help, rescue, or save Mark. They will simply try to see the world through his eyes and provide some warmth and compassion. Mark explains that he had two goals in life when he was a young man. He hoped to have a large, loving family; and wanted to become a skillful and compassionate physician. Although he has achieved the second goal, he has felt sad and guilty for decades because of his failure to develop a loving relationship with his oldest son from a previous marriage. While Mark tells his story, David and Jill encourage him to record his negative thoughts and feelings on a form called the Daily Mood Log, and to rate how strong each feeling is, on a scale from 0% (not at all) to 100% (the most extreme). Click here and you will see Mark's Daily Mood Log. As you can see, Mark has many different kinds of negative feelings ranging in severity from 30% (moderate) to 80% (severe). If you've been listening to the Feeling Good Podcasts, you know that negative feelings do not result from what’s actually happening in our lives, but rather from our negative thoughts about what's happening. David and Jill encourage Mark to record his negative thoughts on the Daily Mood Log as well, and to indicate how strongly he believes each one on a scale from 0% (not at all) to 100% (completely). You can also see that Mark is telling himself that he's been a failure as a father, that his brain is defective, and that he is not doing a good job for David and Jill. These thoughts all involve self-blame. You'll notice that he also has two other-blaming thoughts. This is not unusual. When you’re not getting along with someone, you may spend part of your time telling yourself that the problem is all your fault, and part of your time telling yourself that it’s someone else’s fault. As a result, your negative feelings may shift back and forth from guilt and shame to anger and resentment. Most therapists would not interrupt and ask their patients to record their negative thoughts and feelings while they are venting. However, this information will prove to be incredibly valuable later in the session. Jill and David ask Mark how they’re doing on empathy. If Mark gives them a high rating, they will go on to the next phase of the session, called Paradoxical Agenda Setting. That’s where they will find out what, if anything, Mark wants help with, and see if he has any conscious, or subconscious, resistance to change.
