Social Media Training for Elected Officials with Sam Toles | Ep. 108

Picture this scenario. Staff have worked for a year to bring a project or initiative to the finish line. There have been public meetings and notices, multiple discussions at council meetings, and even some news articles published in the local paper.  Out of the blue, a handful of vocal social media commenters start lighting up the city's social media page and local news groups are atwitter as these critics misrepresent the facts of the project and attack the council for not being transparent and seeking feedback from residents. This results in a dozen or more residents attending the next council meeting with four of them attacking the council and staff under the guise of simply seeking transparency. Then the council, caught off guard and reeling from the "onslaught" of public comment decide to table or postpone the issue. Then they direct the city manager and staff to re-engage the public and seek feedback.  It's demoralizing and time consuming. It sucks the life out of employees.  Sam Toles of CiviSocial joins me on the program to talk about a future initiative aimed at educating and training elected officials about social media, how to interpret criticism, and how to raise these concerns with staff in a healthy and constructive manner. How This Grieving Mother Turned Pain into Purpose | Brenda Eason's Legacy of Healing, Ep. 232

Six Weeks To Fitness

In a world where personal loss can bring life to a standstill, Brenda Eason chose a different path—one of strength, service, and legacy. On this deeply emotional episode of Six Weeks to Fitness, I had the privilege of speaking with Brenda, a visionary entrepreneur, media executive, and the beating heart behind some of the most impactful community platforms for Black entrepreneurs in the country. But more than that, Brenda is a mother who has turned unimaginable heartbreak into a movement of purpose. Brenda's journey is defined by her resilience. After the tragic passing of her beloved son, Zamari Ali Wilson, she found herself facing a choice: remain still in the grief, or rise—and build something in his name that would impact generations to come. She chose the latter. “I don't wake up chasing money,” she told me. “My goal each day is just to keep going. To stay alive. To put one foot in front of the other.” Surrounded by her loving family—two younger sisters and her supportive mother—Brenda leaned on the power of unity. “We just wrapped our arms around each other and kept going,” she shared. And through it all, she continued to pour into others, believing that lifting people up was the greatest expression of her own success. That spirit led Brenda to co-found the Black Empowered Media Network (BEMN) alongside Dr. Tina Michelle, a long-time media professional and mentor. Through platforms like Connect to Your City, BEMN broadcasts on Roku TV, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime—giving authors, entrepreneurs, and visionaries a global voice. But even with this monumental success, Brenda never stops advocating for others. Her proudest work today centers around the Zamari Ali Wilson Foundation, a tribute to her son's life and light. Brenda is working tirelessly to bring Zamari's story to the world through a heartfelt documentary and a children's coloring and activity book that will share his spirit with the next generation. Each year in August, she hosts a birthday celebration in his honor, keeping his memory alive through joy, laughter, and community. She's calling for sponsors, donors, and volunteers to help make this dream a reality. “Even if you can't donate, I'll promote your business in return,” she says. “Whatever it takes to get this story told.” And Brenda doesn't stop there. As the founder of BBON (Black Business Owners Network), a thriving Facebook group with over 70,000 members, she continues to build community every day. From virtual networking sessions to business coaching and goal-setting workshops with Dr. Tina, Brenda's platforms are helping aspiring entrepreneurs turn dreams into businesses and obstacles into stepping stones. “I'm easy to find,” she says with a smile. “Just search Brenda Eason on any platform. I'm always in BBON, all day, every day.” Her presence is magnetic, her mission is personal, and her determination is divine. Brenda Eason is more than a media mogul or a mother—she is a force of light, shining through grief to inspire hope, healing, and purpose. To support the Zamari Ali Wilson Foundation, participate in upcoming events, or sponsor the documentary project, you can reach Brenda directly via Facebook or at 202-308-3157.

Not long ago, I started noticing these long and interesting regular Facebook posts coming through my feed by an account named “Revitalize or Die.” Often compelling rants on towns, economic development and planning, this was right in my wheelhouse. I like people with actual thoughtful (and sharp) opinions, especially when they cut to the core of issues I'm familiar with. For example, “growth doesn't always equal improvement.” And, “we have a lot of institutions and agencies that haven't kept pace with the times.”Jeff Siegler is the man behind the account, and he's built a nice little business on the backs of his tough love and his experience. He denies he's the tough love guy, and he clearly is a likable person. But I'll stick with the meme - I think what he does is try to snap people out of their slumber with some tough love. Jeff says people need to have hard conversations, because when you don't, you end up disappointing vastly more people. I agree. In this episode, Rebecca talks about all the ways that love can make our communities better places and what it looks like to show up with love. This week's shout-out is for the town of Medical Lake, Washington, and its mayor, Terri Cooper. In their small town, they have strong code enforcement policies around vacant buildings on Main Street to eliminate people owning buildings and just sitting on them and letting them fall apart. That takes tremendous courage and bravery because there's no way that was universally popular. This is a bold, audacious move that is rooted in love and pride of place. I've mentioned it many times, but forgot to cite it in this sermon:“The gospel destroys both the pride and the fearfulness that fuel moralistic behavior change. The gospel destroys pride, because it tells us we are so lost that Jesus had to die for us. And it also destroys fearfulness, because it tells us that nothing we can do will exhaust his love for us.”― Timothy Keller, Center Church: Doing Balanced, Gospel-Centered Ministry in Your City

As any venture capitalist knows, not every investment pays off. Half of all new businesses fail within the first five years–but today's podcast guest has learned to spot the winners. Brandon T. Adams is a 2X Emmy® Award-Winning Producer, Podcaster, Media Expert, Investor, and Advisor. In 2017, he founded Accelerant Media Group, an agency that produces commercials, social media content, and TV shows. Accelerant Media Group has produced TV Shows and Documentaries such as Ambitious Adventures, Success in Your City, Red Flags, and Beyond Small Town Dreams.  Brandon is the Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Big Brand Ventures, an advisory and marketing firm that helps scale companies from 7 figures to 8-9 figures in revenue. His expertise in business growth has led to successful campaigns across diverse industries, such as Tech, TeleHealth, Marketing, Blockchain, Entertainment & Film, Franchising, and Consumer Products. From Crowdfunding to Equity Consulting Brandon entered the investing world through crowdfunding. After helping people raise money for their businesses, he realized there was an opportunity to trade his consulting talents and network in exchange for a piece of the company. He could get paid to help the founders increase the value of their company.  Not every investment pays off. No one can predict the future and many businesses fail within their first few years, but some turn into other opportunities–and it just takes one good bet to make it a win for all parties.  What Makes a Successful Entrepreneur When Brandon is choosing his investments, he bets on the founder more than the business. Part of their vetting process involves auditing the founder to see how coachable they are, if they're open to different ideas, or if there's a real reason they haven't been able to scale on their own. Some of the qualities they look for are integrity, grit, and adaptability.   Being open to change is essential because every level of business requires something different from the founder: a different operating system, team, and skill set. To go from zero to $100,000 takes a different person than $100,000 to $1 million or $1 million to $10 million. The most successful founders are able to evolve into what their business needs at that new level. Enjoy this episode with Brandon T. Adams… Soundbytes 15:47-16:03 “I bet on the person, the CEO, the founder. I've seen really good products and opportunities that fail and don't scale because the person running or operating the business is their own worst enemy. They're not open to change.”  17:39-18:04 “What it takes you to go from zero to 100,000 is one thing. Going from 100,000 to a million is one thing. To go from a million to 10 million is a whole other story. To go from 10 million to 100 million…That whole process takes different people, different conversations, different structures, different systems, and you, as the founder and CEO, have to become a different person.” Quotes “If you want anything in life and you surround yourself with the right people and work towards it, you'll achieve it.” “If you can communicate the story, and obviously the brand around it, that's what people buy into.” “When you're around certain people that do things at a certain level, it opens your mind to that level.”  “That's the thing with this world, you never can predict the future, and it just takes one time to be right to make it a big win for all parties.”  Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Website: http://www.BrandonTAdams.com Connect with Brandon on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandontadams1/ Connect with brandiD Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? Her way with words led her to success as a freelance writer and, eventually, as a corporate executive. Wherever she went, her work was driven by her love for meaningful connection. In 2000, after a memorable encounter with an 80-year-old woman, Jenney was inspired to help elevate the advice, stories, and hearts of the wise women around her. Over the course of eighteen years, she interviewed, came to love, and wrote about six women—collecting precious voices that became the chorus of her first book, Before I Leave. While visiting Selma, Alabama, the hometown of one of her subjects, Jenney met former mayor George Evans . . . who had a story to tell of his own. Their fast friendship charted a path toward Jenney's second book, Selma's Mayor. A mix of memoir and nonfiction writing, Jenney seamlessly weaves Evans' historic leadership with its modern-day impacts. Although Evans passed before the project was completed, his story is told with the heart and attention to detail that only comes through true friendship and admiration. When she's not writing, Jenney enjoys traveling far and wide with her partner, caring for her beloved greyhound and adorable chihuahua, and fishing—either alone at a city lake or with anyone who can show her a new spot! She also is sure to set aside time for her most favorite pastimes: spending time with her chidren, grandchildren, and friends, and reading.     About Your Host, Jim Hunt: Welcome to the “Building Amazing Cities and Towns Podcast” … The podcast for Mayors, Council Members, Managers, Staff and anyone who is interested in building an Amazing City.   Your host is Jim Hunt, the author of “Bottom Line Green, How American Cities are Saving the Planet and Money Too” and his latest book, “The Amazing City - 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City”   Jim is also the former President of the National League of Cities, 27 year Mayor, Council Member and 2006 Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine.   Today, Jim speaks to 1000's of local government officials each year in the US and abroad.   Jim also consults with businesses that are bringing technology and innovation to local government.   Amazing City Resources:   Buy Jim's Popular Books: ·       The Entrepreneurial City: Building Smarter Governments through Entrepreneurial Thinking:   https://www.amazingcities.org/copy-of-the-amazing-city   ·       The Amazing City: 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City:   https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/the-amazing-city-7-steps-to-creating-an-amazing-city   ·       Bottom Line Green: How America's Cities and Saving the Planet (And Money Too)  https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/bottom-line-green-how-america-s-cities-are-saving-the-planet-and-money-too   FREE White Paper: ·       “10 Steps to Revitalize Your Downtown”  www.AmazingCities.org/10-Steps   Hire Jim to Speak at Your Next Event: ·       Tell us about your event and see if dates are available at www.AmazingCities.org/Speaking   Hire Jim to Consult with Your City or Town: ·       Discover more details at https://www.amazingcities.org/consulting   Discuss Your Business Opportunity/Product to Help Amazing Cities: ·       Complete the form at https://www.amazingcities.org/business-development   A Special Thanks to Bearing Advisors for the support of this podcast:  www.BearingAdvisors.Net

In this episode, I explore the power of the erotic and how we can cultivate our erotic selves through daily practices and rituals. So often, the erotic is reduced to just the act of sex, but I invite you to see it differently— as a vital, playful, and creative force within us. By reframing our connection to erotic energy, we open ourselves to deeper pleasure, joy, and embodiment in everyday life. I'll be sharing four simple yet powerful rituals for awakening your erotic energy—practices that anyone can do, whether you're partnered or solo. One of the most transformative shifts for me has been embracing painting as an erotic practice. I'll share how my own creative process has changed the way I see the world and how quickly engaging in art can help us break free from old patterns and awaken new desires. We'll also explore the world of herbal aphrodisiacs, including Damiana, Rose, and Ginger, and how these plants can support us in connecting more fully to our sensuality and desires. My hope is to demystify the erotic, release shame around desire, and offer a path to fully inhabiting our bodies and hearts. Join me in this conversation and rediscover the pleasure of being truly alive. ————  MY ONLINE COURSES

With a career highlighted by a main TED Conference speech, over 1,600 national and international presentations, and ten books including the Amazon #1 bestseller "UNCOPYABLE: How to Create an Unfair Advantage Over Your Competition," I've dedicated my professional life to pioneering marketing and branding strategies that leave the competition in the dust. That's where I come in, armed with proven, results-driven marketing strategies and an unconventional approach to branding that distinctly sets your company apart—even in a sea of commoditization. I excel in two critical areas: • Innovation/Branding: Defining what makes your business not just better, but distinctively different and superior to your competition. • Marketing: Mastering the art of communication with your target market—determining not just how but where to engage them, with irresistible offers that make them eager to connect. Co-author of new Amazon best seller, "Uncopyable You! Shaping Canada's Future: Key Issues in the 2025 Federal Election

Beyond the Headlines

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2024 58:00

The 2025 federal election comes at a critical juncture for Canada, with national conversations focusing on major challenges such as the rising cost of living, climate action, infrastructure development, and government transparency. These pressing issues are shaping the platforms of candidates and nomination contestants alike as they propose solutions to address Canadians' most urgent concerns. Affordability remains a top priority for many voters. Across the country, rising housing costs, inflation, and stagnant wages are creating economic pressures that require immediate attention. Proposals to increase housing supply through policy reforms and interprovincial cooperation have gained traction as potential remedies to the housing crisis. Similarly, Canada's response to climate change is a key election theme, with debates surrounding carbon taxes, investments in renewable energy, and efforts to modernize public infrastructure. Infrastructure development is another pressing concern, as outdated systems hinder economic growth and connectivity. Calls for modernization, including the introduction of high-speed rail and improved interprovincial trade networks, reflect the need for long-term solutions to these challenges. Meanwhile, institutional transparency and accountability are under scrutiny, with Canadians demanding reforms to government systems, particularly around access to information and decision-making processes. Amid these broader national issues, local nomination contests are determining who will represent Canadians in Parliament. In Burlington, Connor Fraser is campaigning for the Conservative Party nomination. With a professional background in engineering, finance, and public policy, Fraser has centered his platform on addressing housing affordability, economic modernization, and public safety. He has also emphasized the importance of transparency in governance and collaboration between federal and provincial governments to reduce trade barriers and strengthen economic competitiveness. As Canadians prepare to head to the polls, the choices made at both the nomination and federal election levels will shape the nation's path forward. These decisions will influence how Canada addresses its critical challenges and builds a future that balances sustainability, affordability, and prosperity for all. In this episode, I revisit a blog post I wrote about my visit to Front Royal, Virginia, where I was captivated by the stunning natural landscapes and the charming downtown area. However, I was struck by the stark contrast between these beautiful features and the lifeless sprawl that mars the surroundings. This juxtaposition raises a thought-provoking question: If we all prefer the character of old architecture and local businesses, why do we continue to build in a way that prioritizes new developments? Join me as I explore these themes, reflect on the impact of urban planning, and discuss how communities can strive for a balance between growth and preservation. Thanks for listening to A Matter of Place. His college roommate's date, who was the daughter of Hdl's founder, Lloyd Dalamas, passed on his resume to her father, leading to his first job offer. Over the years, Andy was given numerous opportunities and eventually became the CEO in 2010. Jim agreed with Andy's path to success, emphasizing the importance of following opportunities and finding one's passion.   HDL Company History and Expansion Discussion Jim and Andy discussed the history and growth of Hdl, a company founded in 1983 by a former city manager. Initially focused on gathering sales tax data and providing analytics to cities in California, the company expanded under Andy's leadership as CEO since 2010. Hdl now has a national footprint, offering services beyond sales tax to include economic development and having acquired companies in Texas, Colorado, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia.   Exploring Public Agency Services and Data Analytics Andy discussed the services provided by his company to public agencies, emphasizing the administrative, compliance, data analytics, and revenue forecasting aspects. He highlighted the acquisition of data sets from over 750 public agencies, which aids in benchmarking and revenue forecasting for cities recruiting new businesses. Andy also explained the forecasting model used by his team, which combines a top-down and bottom-up approach for accurate predictions. Jim, a former city official, expressed interest in the data analytics aspect, noting its potential value in decision-making and long-term financial planning. Jim also suggested that this data could be a deciding factor in economic development decisions for businesses.   Discussing Business Engagement and Tax Equity Andy and Jim discussed their engagement with the business community, focusing on education and ensuring tax equity. Andy explained that their teams help businesses understand and correctly fill out tax forms, particularly in states with complex rules. Jim agreed, emphasizing the importance of consistency and professionalism in government dealings. They both acknowledged the potential for tax inequities and the need to level the playing field for businesses.   Discussing Data Management and AI in Local Governments Jim and Andy discussed the rapid growth of data generation in local governments due to technological advancements. They agreed that cities often lack the capacity to manage this data, necessitating third-party involvement. Andy highlighted the cost and time-consuming nature of data acquisition and software development for local governments, which can be more efficiently handled by companies like theirs. They also touched on the potential of artificial intelligence in interacting with large data sets for forecasting and trend prediction. Andy discussed their tools' effectiveness in increasing productivity and their work on revenue forecasting models that incorporate multiple data sets and macroeconomic trends. Jim agreed with Andy's points, emphasizing the importance of understanding both the advantages and potential dangers of artificial intelligence.   Discussing ICMA Event and Public Sector DNA Jim and Andy discussed their upcoming attendance at the International City County Managers Association (ICMA) event in Pittsburgh. Andy explained that their firm, Hdl, has a strong public sector DNA due to its founding by two former city managers and the presence of many former public sector employees. He emphasized their passion for serving the public sector and their belief in the importance of local governments in providing services that enrich people's lives. Jim, who works within a city manager form of government, expressed his admiration for the professionalism and adherence to the code of ethics within the city manager profession.   City Management Systems and Pittsburgh Revitalization Jim and Andy discussed the growth and transition of city management systems in West Virginia, with Jim mentioning a city that recently switched from a strong mayor to a professional city manager. Andy, who is visiting Pittsburgh for the first time, expressed his excitement about the city's revitalization and planned to extend his stay for a bike tour along the rivers. Jim shared his positive impressions of Pittsburgh, emphasizing its impressive cityscape and the convergence of the three rivers.   Understanding Make-a-Wish Foundation and Andy's Involvement Jim and Andy discussed Andy's involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Andy explained that the organization provides support to families with children facing terminal illnesses, not by providing treatment, but by granting wishes to these children. He emphasized that the organization's work is often misunderstood, as most children go through treatment and recover. Andy shared his journey with the organization, starting with a committee role and eventually joining the board. Jim expressed his appreciation for Andy's work and highlighted the importance of understanding that not all problems can be solved by the government. Andy also mentioned that giving generously is a core value in his organization, which includes supporting local charities and sponsoring events.

Drawing from her research in environmental psychology, she highlights the profound ways in which our brains respond to natural elements and community-oriented spaces. Ann remains optimistic about the future, offering actionable strategies and inspiring case studies of cities that have successfully transitioned to healthier, more beautiful urban designs. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss a Super Bowl commercial that's been getting a lot of attention - and no, it's not the DunKings. It was a commercial from “He Gets Us,” depicting a montage of somewhat unusual pairings of people washing feet. It concluded with “Jesus didn't teach hate. He washed feet. He gets us. All of us.” This ad has sparked a lot of controversy among Christians in particular. But should it? Episode Links With each commercial that has aired since 2022, the goal has been to drive people to the “He Gets Us” website, which you can find HERE. In fact, following the ad during the Super Bowl, more than 700,000 people visited the site in the first 18 hours. Those visitors spent twice as long as normal on the site, with thousands subscribing to Bible reading plans and joining small groups. But many Christians have had a lot to say about it. Here are some articles that were mentioned in today's episode that you may want to check out: Maria Baer, “$100M Ad Campaign Aims to Make Jesus the ‘Biggest Brand in Your City,'” Christianity Today.
