As you wander round the streets of our magnificent capital city today, you’ll probably most likely be aware of all the shops and offices, albeit deserted if we are still in lockdown. What you will not see so much of are the relics of London’s glorious industrial past, unless of course, that is you know where and what to look for. From brewing giants such as Guinness, toy manufacturers like Airfix and Lesney who made the world-famous matchbox cars, to the aircraft makers like De Haviland and Handley Page—these and many more instantly recognisable brands had major and often iconic bases in London. Urban archaeologist Mark Amies author of London’s Industrial Past understands the importance of our magnificent machine age, when London was once the powerhouse of the world. Join us as we wander the street of London in search of what once was Londoners very essence. This is Your London Legacy. “If you’re not careful—there are bits of London that you’ll never go and see.” 6:50 Mark’s love for London’s industrial past and architecture in general might trace back to car rides with his father. He would sit in the back of the car as his dad pointed out buildings and what factories they used to be, the people that worked there. There were stories hiding there, histories fading to mist, and Mark found himself yearning to dig into those histories and uncover what used to be there. These places were once social hubs, where people met and went out after work to bond and form relationships. While Mark admits not all factory work was glamorous or free of danger, the social impact of industrialization is undeniable on a social level. “Fortunately for me, they thought I was some kind of expert. I always thought myself more of an enthusiast.” 14:00 The road to Mark’s book was a long one, but started off when he was looking to do something more with his life outside of work. So, he went back to his passion for London’s history and started a blog—back when blogs were the cool thing to do. This led to him writing a few pieces for the Londonist, which can still eb found today, and ultimately led him to filling in slots for BBC Radio London on the Robert Elms program. It was on Mark to take his experience there and approach publishers directly, without an agent, to propose his book: London’s Industrial Past, which he landed by letting his enthusiasm and background shine. And the book is remarkable, not only for its written content but the images that accompany it. Some of these were holdovers from companies wanting giant, wide flyover pictures of their factory and grounds to show off in boardrooms—and the detail you can see in them is remarkable. The book covers industry from aeronautics, to biscuits, to toys—and covers a wide breadth of the history and modern day usage of the facilities—since some were located on areas that formed into their own miniature cities, with businesses and healthcare facilities built specifically for the workers there. London’s Industrial Past is a remarkable read, and guess what—Mark is working on a second, more specific and focused book about London’s past as we speak. Make sure to keep your eye on him via social media, and as he would want, keep your eye on the hidden histories of London as well. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
The apprentice: what comes two mind when you hear these words? Perhaps the first image you conjure up is of some wide-buoi in a suit who isn’t just a one trick pony, but is a whole field of ponies and would crawl over his dead grandma for Lord Sugar’s lucrative investment and business insights. Or perhaps, on the hand, it’s the young whipper-snapper that’s super keen to learn their craft on the job and expected to be doing yeast cell-counts or putting together their own HACCP but instead finds themselves making tea and playing solitaire on the office computer all day, while overlooked by those who are busy doing the real work. We all have our preconceptions about what an apprentice actually does. And, in a day and age that values knowledge work over physical labour, those preconceptions about apprenticeships have driven hoards of young adults (in particular) to enroll in university degree courses. Not that there’s anything wrong with all that, but - as me and my wife often say - you don’t call a biochemist when your boiler dies… you call a plumber. But if you visit the National Apprenticeship website, you’ll be quickly met with an extensive list of schemes ready to train people in some a vast array of jobs. Apprenticeships often get a bad-wrap, particularly when it comes to wages, the quality of the apprenticeship schemes offered, or employers who take on apprentices for the sole benefit of cheap labour and a £1500 payout from the government. But land yourself a good apprenticeship scheme and you can gain insights and knowledge from some of the top professionals in the industry, who have worked for some of the world’s largest breweries. And - whatever you think of big beer - their standards and training often far outstrip the independent micro-brewing sector. These are some of the topics I discuss with brewery consultant Mark Tetlow. While apprenticeships generally offer good training, certification and the potential to carve out a long lasting career, there’s no getting around the UK governments’ current national minimum wage for an apprentice, which is £4.15 per hour. And that’s not just for the 16-18 year olds - this applies to anyone 19 and over in their first year of apprenticeship. While Mark and I don’t discuss any specific events or conversations that have been taking place within the industry, we do talk about some of the underlying issues surrounding pay vs experience, ethical and living wages, and - ultimately - valuing people that often drives these conversations. And as taboo as it can sometime be to talk about money and earning, it’s a conversation that the brewing and hospitality sector desperately needs to contend with. But the main bulk of our conversation focuses on the positive aspects of apprenticeships, which Mark is the Brewing Lead at HIT Training, which is working with the University of Nottingham. Many who know Mark will attest to his care and dedication to the industry, and he has certainly earned his stripes in the world of brewing as you’ll hear from his impressive resume. --- THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY: Brupaks have been providing microbrewery supplies in small and manageable sizes for over 25 years, acting as agents and resellers for some of the world’s best producers of ingredients, sundries and equipment. I couldn't be prouder to present a guest who has brought so much to the game and the lives of those he touches.Coach Evans is currently serving as the Head Football Coach and a School Counselor for Manheim Township HS in Pennsylvania. In 2019, Mark coached the Blue Streaks to their fourth undefeated regular season in school history! Over the past three season, Coach Evans has led the team to an impressive 33-5 record enroute to three consecutive Section 1 Championships and one District 3 Championship.Amazingly, Mark didn't begin his football journey until his Senior year at Cedar Crest HS in Lebanon, PA! Upon graduation, Mark attended Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, where he honed his skills and gained valuable playing time, earning All-Conference honors as a Sophomore. Although he was offered several major Div 1 scholarships, he chose to attend the University of Miami and play for Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson. While Mark was earning a BA in History/Education, he was blessed to play on both the 1987 & 1989 National Championship teams at Miami.Mark began his coaching career as a GA at Shippensburg University, while earning a Masters in Education/Secondary School Counseling. COMMENTARY A recurring theme we’ve seen in the book of Mark has been Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. Story after story demonstrates that the God of Israel has now appeared as the person of Jesus. This theme rises to a crescendo in today’s reading when Jesus makes His first public claim about His divinity (Mark 14:62). While Mark wants us to understand that Jesus was fully God, He also wants us to see that He was also fully human. No story expresses His humanity more poignantly than the first episode we read today. Mark 14:32-41 describes Jesus’ raw moments of anguish as He waits with Peter, James, and John for His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Here, Jesus is described as “deeply distressed and troubled.” He admits to being “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). Earlier, Jesus confidently told James and John that they would drink from a “cup” of suffering with Him (Mark 10:38). Now in their presence, He falls to the ground and pleads God to take this “cup” from Him (Mark 14:36). This is a degree of psychological distress that we are unaccustomed to seeing in Jesus. One reason why Mark might have included this vivid story could be that it shows us that Jesus had a full human experience. He suffered in every way, not just externally but also internally. By enduring the onslaught of sin in all its forms, He became for us a perfect and sympathetic Savior (Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15; 5:7-10). Another reason why we might have this story is that Jesus shows us how to persevere when we suffer for following Him. Jesus finds His inner resolve by praying to the Father three separate times. In contrast, Peter falls asleep three times instead of praying as Jesus asks, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Mark 14:38). It’s noteworthy that at the end of today’s reading, Peter, in his own time of temptation, disowns Jesus three times (Mark 14:66-72). Jesus’ example, therefore, illustrates the power we can receive from God through prayer. God may not always give us exactly what we want for ourselves, but if we turn to Him, God offers the peace and power to persevere. SCRIPTURE MARK 14:32–72 GETHSEMANE 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” JESUS ARRESTED 43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind. JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN 53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’ ” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him. PETER DISOWNS JESUS 66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said. 68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or under- stand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway. 69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.” 72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept. REFLECTION 1. Mark 14:47 says, “Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.” This reaction reflects another misunderstanding about what Jesus was trying to accomplish as the Messiah. He wasn’t “leading a rebellion” (Mark 14:48). He was establishing a fundamentally different type of kingdom. This raises the question for us; is it ever appropriate for us to strike at someone like this? Why? 2. How do Jesus’ prayers in the garden help nuance His earlier teaching: “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24)? In what situation do you need to echo Jesus’ words, “Not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36)?
While Mark normally chooses something Kelsey should watch, we switched the roles. The duo discusses the pandemonium that is Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness in our What the F*** Did We Just Watch segment. There is a lot to cover and the story doesn't end with the documentary. It's the gift that keeps on giving. This week's Rebooting Westworld covers episode 3, The Absence of Field, so we break it down in our usual fashion. What goes with Tiger King like cheese and fine wine? A Little Princess. It's Kelsey's pick for our Geriatric Cinematic this week and Mark hasn't seen it. The match was unintentional but we were happy to do it anyway. Be sure to follow us on Twitter (@TheReelAppeal), Facebook, Instagram, and you can contact the show at TheReelAppeal@gmail.com. You can find every episode on all podcast catchers and don't forget to rate our show on iTunes! Easily one of my favorite BEHIND THE LENS shows, and a long time coming, we welcome a very special guest this week, director/writer/producer MARK PELLINGTON. Mark has previously done pre-recorded interviews for #BTLRadioShow but thanks to his always busy schedule, this is the first time we've been able to have him on live (and it won't be the last). To say this is an insightful - and fun - show would be an understatement. Nothing was off-limits for this seasoned directorial veteran. Take a listen as we cover everything from film criticism to cameras to casting to story to surviving as a filmmaker in this every-changing landscape and adapting to and embracing those changes, and so much more. While Mark expounds his thoughts on cameras and lenses ("It's all about the glass") and all the tools in the filmmaker's toolbox, his reflection on his earlier films contrasting that with his latest projects, is interesting and thoughtful. And how about the importance of music in a film? For all of the newer filmmakers out there, Mark has a sage perspective on movie reviews and criticism as well as approaching production. Plus, a fabulous anecdote about Jon Hamm, who starred in Mark's last film, NOSTALGIA. (Did I mention story?!) But the real highlight of the show is hearing about Mark's directorial trek into the world of STAR TREK with STAR TREK: TREK SHORTS, plus his upcoming new series on Jeffrey Katzenberg's Quibi, SURVIVE, which premieres on April 6th. So sit back and relax and spend an hour with MARK PELLINGTON on BEHIND THE LENS! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
PALMERSTON NORTH. MANAWATU. Four months into his sentence, in August of 2002, Mark Lundy took his case to the Court of Appeal based on the belief that he was convicted on “bad science”. Upon upholding the conviction, the Court added an additional three years to Mark's non-parole period; bringing the total non-parole term to 20 years. The reason for the increase was due to the Court of Appeal believing the original trial judge was too lenient and didn't fully take into account the horrific circumstances of Amber Lundy's murder, “She must have died with the awful injuries to her mother as her last living memory ... we have to say that Mr Lundy's murder of his daughter in these circumstances, coming on top of the murder of his wife, requires denunciation and demonstration of society's abhorrence at a very high level". While Mark continued to maintain his innocence. The legal avenues to express that innocence were running out. Visit www.truecrimenz.com for additional information on this case. Mark Woodland – Founder & CEO of @MyXplor In this episode Mark shares his journey from the army through to selling his childcare business and eventually starting MyXplor. Before Mark joined the army he was far from the average child, passing through 13 schools in total. Starting out as a Forward Observer and working his way up to a psychological examiner in the army, Mark has had some incredible experiences. While Mark was away working in the army his mum decided to leave her long term career as a teacher and start her own childcare centre. Her passion for teaching was so strong however teaching in a school and running a child care business weren’t quite as aligned as she had hoped. After some calls with Mark, she convinced him to leave the army and to assist her in running her child care centre. Upon his return, Mark soon realised that the childcare industry was highly regulated with strict processes and heavy administrative burden which he hadn’t quite foreshadowed. There was so much admin involved that it almost became a full time job just signing parents in and out of the centre. He thought there had to be a better way. It was here that MyXplor was born. Mark set out to build a technology solution for his own centres and upon opening up a 200 spot centre with his technology, he saw the true power and potential for MyXplor. One of the first problems to solve in childcare centres was the way parents signed children in. The technology has only grown and evolved from here. After the success in his own centre and the eventual sale of that centre, Mark talks about the revolution MyXplor has led in the implementation of technology in child care centres. Mark has a growing team in Melbourne (over 70) and a team of 5 in the UK with a strong culture. Mark has led MyXplor in two major capital raises both led by AirTree Ventures. Mark credits AirTree for helping his growth over the years. An inspiring entrepreneur, a dear friend and client of our firm, we loved chatting with Mark and know you too will love his story.

While Mark on the other hand, was posting and chatting on FB and Instagram like a teenage kid. Doing exactly what he gives Kelly crap for.... Also while Mark is gone for a week long business trip. Kelly takes full control of both pink and blue jobs, and has it running like a well oiled machine. Find out how she does it, and why it’s a little awkward when Mark gets home and struggles to fit into the new family dynamics.
One of the most common criticisms leveled at Christians and the church in general is that of hypocrisy. Religious playacting – speaking and putting on a show of one thing but living another. I think humanity’s genius for corruption is the reason any spiritual pursuit runs the risk of drifting into hypocrisy. I don’t think there’s a person on earth who isn’t guilty of it to at least some degree. The commonality of hypocrisy isn’t an excuse for it though. Jesus spent a significant portion of his teaching time addressing the sin of religious hypocrisy. One of those times will be the subject of our study as we continue through the gospel of Mark, reading ch 7:1-23.Another controversy with the Pharisees and religious leaders unfolds in our text. Why do you think the writer of Mark emphasizes that the issue in question was about traditions? What seems to carry more weight for the religious leaders, God’s word or their traditions about God’s word?Traditions in and of themselves aren’t negative or bad. They can prove very helpful for remembering ones heritage and history. Why had they become a negative thing in this text? What traditions do we have at Eastgate? How do you feel or react when someone isn’t in step with our traditions? How can we keep traditions from becoming sacred in our thinking? At the heart of this debate is the question of what is required to be one of God’s people. What do you think the Pharisees and Scribes thought was necessary? What does Jesus seem to think of their view?Jesus finishes his address of purity and hypocrisy by exposing what the Old Testament purity laws were pointing to: the broken human condition. While Mark doesn’t state it in this section, based on everything Jesus says about the heart, what would constitute a cure for human corruption? How does the Good News tell us that is achieved? It should be an interesting study – hope to see you there!Click here for a pdf version of the PowerPoint slideshow for this message.
THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
In describing the life and career of Texas Singer-Songwriter, Mark Powell, it’s really kind of hard to know where to begin and where to end. The west Texas native has carved out a piece of life for himself that is the envy of many, including Yours Truly. But, like all great success stories, the road to get to where his is today has had a lot of twists and turns. The son of a performing musician, Mark followed suit and at an early age he found himself on stages playing twin fiddles with his father. It was also during this time of his life that Mark discovered he had the unique ability to understand how to play most songs after hearing them just a single time, as well as remember almost every word. As adolescence gave way to the later stages in becoming a grown up, Mark found himself in college and performing with his own group. Not long after this Mark loaded up and headed for Nashville with a developmental deal from Universal. While Mark only spent about a year and a half in Nashville, he was able to learn more about the business side of country music and songwriting and found himself in writing rooms with legendary country songwriters like Mac McAnally and Walt Aldridge. Upon his return to Texas Mark entered a brief period of his life in which he held down a “real job” as a banker; something that allowed him to gain useful knowledge to use later on his musical endeavors. Through a twist of fate in what was supposed to be Mark helping to put together a show for a local venue, the Outlaws and Legends Music Festival was born. The backstory to this event is very interesting and you won’t want to miss it in the interview. This festival has now become a top-tier festival in the scene and is approaching its 10th year. An entire episode could focus on the festival itself. In the conversation Mark also talks about co-writing and his relationship with true country music songwriting legend, Dean Dillon. Currently, when Mark’s not writing or performing in Texas, he can probably be found somewhere playing music or trout fishing in the mountains of Colorado. That sounds pretty much like an ideal situation to me! Sit back, relax, and enjoy our visit with one of the more interesting guests we ever had on the podcast: Mark Powell! https://markpowellmusic.com/ https://www.outlawsandlegends.com/ We also want to point out that the 55th Annual Courtland Funday is quickly approaching and will be held the last weekend in July. (July 26th & 27th) It will feature all kinds of activities and entertainment including a Saturday night performance by a previous guest on the podcast: Rob Baird. Unschool Yourself First: A Parents Gateway to Self Directed Learning Mark Beaumont is a professional educator that is passionate about self directed learning. He is a middle school principal at an international school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Mark is an artist, husband and father. His daughter attends the school he works at. And even though she attends school, Mark raises her with the principles of self directed learning. He "finds it nothing less than fascinating and challenging." With his professional background and experience as well the story of his personal struggles in school Mark offers great perspective. He reminds us it is important to unschool yourself first. In this episode we discussed: Where his belief in self directed learning came from Why Mark and his friends started a small unschooling centre in Chiang Mai for their own children Unschooling and attending school. Mark explains why this is not a contradiction and how he is able to continue to unschool his daughter while she attends school How he has found his way in the struggle between the two worlds of traditional education and self directed learning Why he wrote his book Unschool Yourself First: A Parents Gateway to Self Directed Learning and the 3 main themes he lays out for readers. The fundamentals that took him from progressive educator to unschooler The educational research that explains why unschooling works so well The personal learners profile that helps parents to empathize, understand and support their child Questions Unschoolers Face I also asked Mark to answer some key questions that many unschoolers hear. Questions like; Does unschooling start with the parent or with the child? Is unschooling or self directed learning for everyone or only the select few? Self Directed Kids-will they really be productive? Mark is an excellent advocate for self directed learning. Through his work as an educator and parent consultant he has worked with countless families on both sides of the coin. And yes, Mark says it starts with us, the parents. Unschool yourself first. Mark's Advice To Parents Mark offers advice to parents that may be struggling to understand self directed learning. He says trust your child to know what is best for them in their life and learning. Support them in their learning. Have conversations. Figure out how to help them go deeper into what resonates with them and what they are interested in. Support your child. While Mark shared his childhood schooling experience (which he describes as nothing less than traumatic) I noticed that he had a lot of support in his life. Whether it was his parents, an aunt, or his grandparents, they all played a part in offering choice and freedom to Mark. He didn't have to stay confined to the school structure that was not serving him at all. Mark leaves us with his top 2 book recommendations for entering self directed learning. The inspiration for innovation takes all forms. For some its music. For others its art. And for others its data. When I was CTO, Mark Hurd, the CEO at HP at the time, had a quote that was ingrained into everything the executive team did. “If you stare at the numbers long enough, they will eventually confess.” Mark Hurd The expectation was that as an executive you knew “your numbers”. It was not unusual to have Mark stop me in the hall and ask about the R&D investment levels last quarter for the top three competitors, customer net promoter scores for our top 5 products or the reverse supply chain levels from retail returns. While Mark’s focus on the numbers was well-meaning, I always felt that it caused blind spots when it came to understanding the shift, changes, and unspoken needs and wants of our customers. It looked at numbers as single elements to be managed individually. It also had the built-in assumption that the numbers were fact and that they never misled. Years later, I came across this story that caused me to reflect back on these times at HP. Misleading Innovation Decisions During WWII, the Navy tried to determine where they needed to armor their aircraft to ensure they and their crew came back home. They started tracking each and every bullet hole from each plane in the navy. With this data, they ran an analysis to see if there were any trends of where planes had been shot up. Based on the analysis, the conclusion was that they needed to increase the armor on the wingtips, on the top of the central body, and around the elevators. That’s where the data told them their planes were getting shot up.Abraham Wald, a statistician, disagreed. He thought they should put more armor in the nose area, engines, and the underside of the fuselage. Everyone immediately thought his proposal was crazy. That’s not where the planes were getting shot.Except - Mr. Wald realized what the others didn’t. What the Navy thought it had done was analyze where aircraft were suffering the most damage. What they had actually done was analyze where aircraft could suffer the most damage and still make it back. What about the places where the planes in their analysis were not shot? Put simply, planes that had been shot there crashed. They weren’t looking at the whole sample set, they only looked at the planes, and crews that survived. Did The Data Lie or Just Mislead? The data didn’t lie. The planes did get shot in the locations identified during the analysis. The data, however, did mislead. It was only part of the entire data set that should have been looked at. While data can be incredibly helpful when developing ideas that will become future innovations, we need to apply human insight and skepticism. Throwing in your gut feel may also be a good idea. If something seems incredibly obvious, that begs the question as to why and what is missing. Rarely are things that cut and dry. That obvious. Go beyond the obvious and use your curiosity to ask that next question so that you can dig deeper and uncover some insight that others are not seeing. Be careful of assumptions. Be careful of using past experience or even what we think we see and then filling in the missing data. Impact on HP So what happened with the Mark Hurd approach at HP? With the emphasis on your numbers being compared to your competitors, it became clear that if your numbers were not “better” than theirs’ then you weren’t running your part of the business appropriately. The result was some bad business decisions such as cutting HP’s R&D spend to match the R&D spend of our Asia Pacific based competitors. I always found it interesting that the focus was always on cutting. Why wasn’t the decision made to increase the R&D spend to match that of Apple? That is a story is for another time. While I pushed back hard on this approach and specifically what was being done to R&D spend, my one regret was not pushing back even harder or finding a way to convince Mark and others on the folly of the approach. I didn’t find a way to play the “Abraham Wald” role at HP. One key lesson that I did learn from this experience was that the context of the information you are using to make innovation decisions is just as important as the data. Killer Question How could you challenge yourself and your team to take the “Abraham Wald” approach with the aircraft analysis? How can you go beyond the obvious and uncover an insight that is not obvious?
The college admissions scandal has stormed the media! While everyone enjoys a good scandal, join Mark and Anna as they offer perspective on the scandal but also true practices (for better or worse) in college admissions. While Mark and Anna chat about some of the issues associated with the college application and admissions process that have fallen from grace, more importantly, they are going to refocus on those components of the college application process that are most important in the evaluation of college applicants as well as the most important things to focus on when developing your application-and it doesn't require $500,000 or unethical actions.

In the information security world, we all wish we had more access to senior executives. Following that logic, if you’re responsible for security at your organization, and you are lucky enough to ride on the same elevator with a senior executive from your company, you should be prepared with your “elevator pitch” on what to say about improving the cybersecurity posture of the organization. When asked, you want to have your message fine-tuned and be able to communicate it clearly and succinctly (before the elevator reaches the parking garage). In this podcast, LBMC Information Security’s Mark Burnette discusses his elevator pitch to President Donald Trump with podcast host Bill Dean. While Mark hasn’t ridden on an elevator with the President, he doesn’t let that stop him from finding a way to articulate what the President should be doing to address cybersecurity issues at the federal level. Listen, and discover these key takeaways: Reasons cybersecurity initiatives at the federal government level are important Former and current administration actions on cybersecurity Reasons for establishing a national cybersecurity advisory committee The need for enforcing existing cybersecurity laws Why the ease and proliferation of cyber-attacks is too much to ignore

Mark Ferguson's purpose is to help as many people as he can become financially free through real estate. Mark Ferguson is a real estate agent, real estate investor, author and the creator of InvestFourMore.com. Mark's real estate team sells hundreds of homes a year. He has flipped over 100 houses, owns 16 rental properties, and has written five books. Investfourmore.com is a real estate blog with over 300,000 views a month, over 35,000 subscribers and a wealth of free information. Mark created InvestFourMore in March of 2013 to show investors how to invest in rental properties. The blog became popular very quickly and Mark expanded the topics he wrote about to include flipping houses and becoming a real estate agent. While Mark loves to write and help others invest, he still actively invests and shares his journey through his articles. Mark has been investing since 2001 and has also been an agent since 2001. He has seen the ups of the real estate industry and survived the housing crisis thanks to his solid investing strategies. There are many real estate gurus in the online space who talk about buying with no money down, buying with no credit, and making easy money in real estate. These programs and guru's are more interested in taking easy money from consumers than they are teaching people real, usable strategies in real estate. Mark did not create InvestFourMore to cater to the easy money crowd. Mark feels real estate investing the right way is not easy, it takes hard work, discipline and patience. He feels it is a good thing that real estate investing is not easy, because if it were, there would not be so much up side for the investors who put in the hard work. What you will learn: How Mark went from selling 10-15 houses a year to over 200 The “dilapidated dwelling” niche market where Mark focuses much of his efforts Pros and cons of being both an investor and a licensed broker How Mark overcame being an introvert to start his blog and podcast The value of going to a real estate event What Mark learned from his biggest career mistake Why you need to focus on high-level activities in your business and delegate the rest to hourly workers Two of the most expensive mistakes you can make in real estate Why you should study many areas of real estate before getting your license or buying a house The daily habits that make up Mark's morning routine Key strategies for succeeding in real estate Resources: SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/InvestFourMore SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/Ferguson SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/RentalPropertyEmpireBook SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/webinar SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/termsbook SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/ebook SmartRealEstateCoachPodcast.com/QLS
Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
November 28, 2013 0312 Greenwich Mean Time West 87 Degrees Altitude 4000 Feet 3 As we continued westward, we maintained radio contact with other aircraft on 123.45. It appeared that the entire electrical grid for the United States was wiped out. No one had any idea what caused it or how long it would take for the system to be restored. It seemed pretty clear to us that once we were on the ground, it would be quite a while before we would be able to travel anywhere. This was a major concern for Jim and me. While Mark lived locally, in Schaumburg, Jim and I were both commuters, from Denver. Initially, we discussed perhaps renting a car and driving from Chicago to Denver, then reality set in. Without electricity, it would be impossible to rent a car or conduct virtually any other type of financial transaction, since pretty much everything is done with computers and internet connections. And, even if we could get our hands on a car, we wouldn’t be able to reach Denver on a single tank of gas. The previous year’s aftermath of Hurricane Sandy demonstrated how fragile the fuel infrastructure is. Without electrical power, there was no way we would be able to refuel enroute from Chicago to Denver. So driving home was out of the question. Mark listened to us discussing our predicament, and finally chimed in. “Hey, guys, you can stay at my house.” I wanted to at least make an effort to object, but it would have been totally transparent. He offered his help, and we needed it badly. We accepted his offer. I momentarily felt sorry for his wife and kids. They were expecting Mark to be coming home to their own rescue, and here he would be dragging complete strangers with him. And, with all communications out, there wouldn’t even be any way for him to give them a heads up. We allowed our FMC to guide us to O’Hare, and set up for a visual approach to Runway 32 Left. I configured the aircraft a bit early, so that we could see if all of the onboard equipment was operating normally. Everything worked pretty much as advertised except for the autobrakes. The Autobrake System was designed to automatically apply the brakes to slow the airplane at a predetermined, pilot-selectable deceleration level upon landing. It wouldn’t be a problem to use manual brakes and get the airplane stopped on the runway. What concerned me more was the potential for the Anti-skid System to also malfunction, so I would need to be extra careful with manual braking, since I would be the human-powered antiskid. Still, not a problem. I easily picked out the landmarks along the shoreline of Lake Michigan and set myself up on a long straight-in final approach to Runway 32 Left, using the TCAS to give myself five miles spacing on the aircraft ahead of me. When I was on a three-mile final, I gave a quick call on 123.45, then on 121.5. “WorldJet Airways 407 on three-mile final to three-two left.” On short final, I looked over toward the control tower to see if they would flash a green light at me, the backup system to provide landing authorization. Nothing. There was no way to know if there was even anyone in the tower. I wouldn’t have blamed them if they had abandoned the tower hours ago, since there was nothing they could accomplish without any form of communications capability. After we landed, I cleared the runway and shut down the left engine. My weight was light enough that a one-engine taxi would be no problem, and I wanted to save as much fuel as I could, to operate the APU if necessary. The Auxiliary Power Unit would provide electrical power and air for heating and cooling, if we needed to be self-sufficient for a while, such as remote parking. We proceeded along the outer taxiway in a counter-clockwise direction to the International Terminal, the only terminal authorized for flights originating out of the United States. I knew from previous experience, inner taxiway goes clockwise, outer taxiway goes counter-clockwise. I just hoped the other airplanes on the ground knew it also. And there were a lot of airplanes. They were everywhere. From what I could see at the concourses of the main terminal, every parking spot was occupied, probably by aircraft that were on the gate when the power failed. Frequency 123.45 became the de-facto CB radio, with everyone chiming in on their location and intentions. I could see that there were some open gates at the International Terminal, but the automatic Accu-Park parking system would, obviously, be inoperative. I picked an empty gate, turned in along the lead-in line painted on the tarmac, and slowly approached the gate. As I got closer, I reached up to the overhead panel and started the APU. Just as I was about to slow to a stop, I saw a mechanic running toward our parking spot, with directional wands in his hands. As he got to our gate, he started marshaling me to the parking spot. When he gave me the “stop” signal, I set the brakes, confirmed that the APU was running, and shut down the right engine. The mechanic plugged his headset into the communication jack in the nose wheel well. “Welcome to Chicago, Captain. We’ve had an exciting day!” “So have we. Can you fill me in on what’s going on?” I asked. “About five hours ago, a huge sun spot storm knocked out all power, pretty much all over the world, as far as we can tell. Internet, phone lines, everything is out. All of our electronics are fried. The only radios that work are the hand-held transceivers that were in the garage and the baggage sorting area. Not very many. Let me ask you something, Captain. How much fuel do you have?” “Twenty-two thousand pounds. Why?” “We’re trying to get an idea how much fuel we have if we need to rob one airplane to fuel another. I’m going to be off headset for a little while to try to get some boarding stairs hooked up to door six left.” “Why can’t we hook up the loading bridge?” “The terminal backup power is out, and the loading bridge needs power to position it up to the airplane. Also, even if we had the bridge up to the airplane, we couldn’t use it without power, because the auto-leveler wouldn’t work.” Of course – the auto-leveler. As people enter or leave an airplane, the weight of the airplane changes, and the auto-leveler adjusts the height of the loading bridge so that it remains at the height of the bottom of the aircraft door. When you offload over two hundred people, the aircraft can raise as much as three feet. So we waited for portable stairs. At least we had the APU, so we could have electrical power for lighting and services, such as toilet operation. And heating. The sun was starting to go down, and the temperature was dropping quickly. After about an hour, portable stairs were positioned at door four left, and everyone slowly deplaned. It took about forty minutes for everyone to deplane, with all of their carry-on luggage. When everyone was off, I shut down the APU, turned off the Battery Switch, and headed to the back of the airplane, where the stairs were located. The Captain is always the last to leave. No telling when I’d be flying this baby again. By now it was dark inside the airplane, and I reached into my flight bag, pulled out my new LED flashlight, and pressed the switch. Nothing. I cycled the switch a few more times, with the same results. About this time, the mechanic had entered the plane to make sure everyone had gotten off okay. His flashlight was working fine. “Is that an LED light, Captain?” “Yes, but it’s not working.” “The radiation has wiped out pretty much all the LEDs. If you have HID headlights in your car, they won’t work, either. As far as I can tell, most of the cars are operating okay, though.” “Thanks for your help. We have a good ship. The only squawk we have is the autobrakes aren’t working. Other than that, clean bird.” “Good to hear, Captain. Have a safe trip home.” A safe trip home. With no way to communicate to the airline planning department, no way to flight plan without weather information, no way for the airline to even know where its planes or pilots were located, no way to communicate to the flight crews or passengers, and a winter storm approaching, a safe trip home would be nice. Really nice. But it wouldn’t be happening very soon.
Raw food diet is a very controversial topic in the pet food industry right now. Some pet owners believe that our pets’ ancestors ate a raw diet, so it’s best if we feed them the same types of food. Other people believe that raw food is the home of many harmful bacteria and parasites that could make our pets very sick. This week, I wanted to get some more information about this hot topic. I spoke with Mark Sapir, Chief Marketing Officer at Stella & Chewy’s. Stella & Chewy’s is a pet food company that strives to offer pet parents a commercially available way to feed their furry companion a raw food diet that is both healthy and safe. They follow strict guidelines to ensure that the diets they provide to pet owners are nutritionally balanced and properly prepared to prevent the spread of bacteria. During our interview Mark explained the benefits of a raw food diet. He also told me whether or not the diet is safe pets of every age, size and activity level. While Mark offers a lot of great information in this week’s episode, it’s also important for you to consult your veterinarian or a trained canine nutritionist before switching your dog’s diet.
On October 11, 1975 television sketch comedy experienced a seismic shift as NBC's Saturday Night made its premiere. Over the course of it's first five seasons, characters were created and stars were made, kicking off a cycle that continues over 40 years later. Looking back at that original five years, which of the comedy legends in that cast was the best? While Mark and Hal are huge SNL nerds, it made sense to get someone with inside information. Enter Dave Thomas, a comedy legend in his own right, who was often there visiting his friends and would later work with Lorne Michaels himself. I'm going to stop writing this now because you just need to listen. See Mark and Hal LIVE in NYC and LA. For all upcoming dates, click here.

After reviewing Mark’s scores on the Brief Mood Survey, the Empathy phase of the session unfolds. During this phase of the session, David and Jill will not try to help, rescue, or save Mark. They will simply try to see the world through his eyes and provide some warmth and compassion. Mark explains that he had two goals in life when he was a young man. He hoped to have a large, loving family; and wanted to become a skillful and compassionate physician. Although he has achieved the second goal, he has felt sad and guilty for decades because of his failure to develop a loving relationship with his oldest son from a previous marriage. While Mark tells his story, David and Jill encourage him to record his negative thoughts and feelings on a form called the Daily Mood Log, and to rate how strong each feeling is, on a scale from 0% (not at all) to 100% (the most extreme). Click here and you will see Mark's Daily Mood Log. As you can see, Mark has many different kinds of negative feelings ranging in severity from 30% (moderate) to 80% (severe). If you've been listening to the Feeling Good Podcasts, you know that negative feelings do not result from what’s actually happening in our lives, but rather from our negative thoughts about what's happening. David and Jill encourage Mark to record his negative thoughts on the Daily Mood Log as well, and to indicate how strongly he believes each one on a scale from 0% (not at all) to 100% (completely). You can also see that Mark is telling himself that he's been a failure as a father, that his brain is defective, and that he is not doing a good job for David and Jill. These thoughts all involve self-blame. You'll notice that he also has two other-blaming thoughts. This is not unusual. When you’re not getting along with someone, you may spend part of your time telling yourself that the problem is all your fault, and part of your time telling yourself that it’s someone else’s fault. As a result, your negative feelings may shift back and forth from guilt and shame to anger and resentment. Most therapists would not interrupt and ask their patients to record their negative thoughts and feelings while they are venting. However, this information will prove to be incredibly valuable later in the session. Jill and David ask Mark how they’re doing on empathy. If Mark gives them a high rating, they will go on to the next phase of the session, called Paradoxical Agenda Setting. That’s where they will find out what, if anything, Mark wants help with, and see if he has any conscious, or subconscious, resistance to change.
Death Of Kathy Wangler. September 4th, 2006. Lima, Ohio. A man wakes up to the sound of an alarm. It's the carbon monoxide detector. He will hurry upstairs to check on his wife. She appeared to be having a seizure. He then called 911 to get her help. No one could save her, though. She was pronounced dead at the hospital after attempts to revive her had failed. While Mark moves on with his life, getting remarried 14 months after his wife Kathy's death, her family pressures police to investigate the anesthesiologist. More than three years after the death of his wife he is charged with her murder. Dr. Mark Wangler would profess his innocence. He would state that his wife's death was an accident. His two grown sons voiced their support for him as did his new wife, Esther. Kathy's family and friends did not believe him. They said Mark was verbally abusive to her and wanted to avoid a costly divorce. Was a faulty water heater to blame as Mark claims? Or did he set his wife up to die? While Mark is away Seth and Myles geek out on Bitcoin, bash on Apple and just generally rant in the best way.
The Gospel of Mark doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to Jesus’ Disciples. In works of fiction there is often a character that functions as a “foil.” A foil is a character that embodies the opposite character traits of the hero in order to highlight the quality of the hero. While Mark isn’t fiction, the disciples often function as a foil to Jesus. They often embody for us the failures and weaknesses of humanity in contrast to the strength and grace of Jesus. In this week’s reading the disciples, as Jesus moves closer to Jerusalem and his confrontation with the religious and political leaders, begin jockeying for position. They anticipate the culmination of Jesus’ ministry will be revolution, and they want important roles in the new order. But their aspirations are cut short when Jesus reminds the disciples of the upside down nature of his Kingdom.
The first hour welcomes Mark Goodkin for a robust discussion on personal responsibility and it’s role in our society. Mark is a student of philosophy, who is interested in the philosophical foundations of our personal freedoms and republic form of government. He believes that much insight can be gained from philosophy, not only as a way to seek a secular justification for our personal freedom and rights, but also as a moral guide to our actions, whether we consider ourselves spiritual or not. While Mark is interested in pursuing those personal goals which will help him live a fulfilling life, he is also working to develop and use his gifts and talents to help others and make a difference in the world. Mark believes that many people, whether they consider themselves spiritual or not, at least to some extent, feel the same. However, Mark’s primary interest is in whether we have a moral responsibility to do so? --- In the second hour of the show, Eldon will be interviewing Richard Rowland about his book, Unspoken Messages. Richard is a two tour veteran of the Vietnam War, spending his tours at Phu Bai in the I Corp area or northern section of South Vietnam. In 2008, Richard was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer related to exposure to Dioxin (commonly known as Agent Orange). Richard is also a retired Sergeant from the Kentucky State Police after a 28 year career in law enforcement. Unspoken Messages, is a book about Hope…simply hope. It is a road map for how to live beyond medical expert expectations when you receive an end of life diagnosis. It is about a birth of spirituality in a person that had been living in a black and white, right and wrong, science proven or non-existent world. The book is in two parts with part one being ten short stories or descriptive occurrences revolving around animals which will make you question coincidence. Part two is a journey or road map that shows you how Richard traveled through an end of life diagnosis to a place of peace.
In episode #10 of the 100% Wild Podcast , Mark Drury joins us to discuss the tricky topic of acquiring hunting permission! While Mark does most of his hunting now on land he owns, that wasn't always the case, and in this episode he shares what strategies he's used to get that precious hunting permission in the past. I also dive deep into my own tactics for finding new properties to hunt and gaining access. We cover some really solid stuff, so be sure to check this one out!
In the vein of Pitch Black and Event Horizon, we review another unsung solid B sci-fi film; this time Pandorum. An oft trod sub-genre of science fiction, the "generation ship" gets its due in this film to entertaining affect. Completely undeserving of its 28% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Pandorum is a niche film that unlike its many contemporaries is true science fiction, not just a western set in outer space. While Mark had his list of plausibility complaints, they were small and outweighed by the care of production design.Download: 207 Pandorum
It's Christmas in July! Mark and Hal of Maximum Fun's own We Got This released an episode naming a popular Christmas movie as the definitive best Christmas movie. Mark regrets the choice and has tried several times to convince Hal to re-evaluate. While Mark seeks to get the decision reversed, Hal would like to prohibit Mark from bringing it up again. Who's right? Who's wrong? If you want to listen to the We Got This episodes referenced, they are Episode #43 "Best Christmas Movie," and Episode #52 "The One Year Anniversary Spectacular." 16 May 2016 - When you have Mark Potok, from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), on for the interview, you already know it's going to be a good show. Mark is the editor of the SPLC quarterly journal, Intelligence Report and most of this interview is based upon an article he and Don Terry wrote for the Winter issue, Margins to the Mainstream. While Mark is one of the leading experts in the country on extremism (and we will have him back in a few weeks on that very subject) this article took a look at the conspiracy theories which have seeped into the mainstream of politics from the radical right. In this, the season of Trump, it seemed apropos. Will takes a thoughtful stroll around democracy. Once initially ensconced, most citizens tend to think of democracy as a done deal but it is a process and, certainly, both in North America and in Europe, it is undergoing change, some good and some bad. Will knows where he wants to go and that's what he's "on about" today. I'm off on one of those "third rail" topics of American politics, Social Security. Everyone seems sure that Social Security is in need of saving and, well, everyone is wrong. It isn't that we shouldn't maintain and even strengthen Social Security, we most assuredly should, it's that the problem with Social Security isn't funding, the problem is politics. ...and one other thing...we are going to Netroots Nation in St. Louis in July! Will and I will be there the whole time. We will be recording interviews for Hopping Mad and helping out on Radio Row at the Netroots Radio booth. Come on by. We would love to meet you, maybe chat over a couple of carrots and generally have a fabulous time. Thanks for listening! - Carrots! Arliss
Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Mark Andersen of Positive Force DC, We Are Family, and the books Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital (co-authored with Mark Jenkins) and All the Power: Revolution Without Illusion. On the thirtieth anniversary of Washington, DC’s “Revolution Summer,” I wanted to celebrate and illuminate the event that sent reverberations out into the world that continue to resonate today. While Mark has nothing to do with the Philly punk scene this project focuses on, he’s like some other interview subjects (e.g. Martin Sprouse) whom I’ve elected to interview for being so influential on all punk scenes, including the Philly scene. Mark Andersen grew up on his parents’ farm in Montana. He never fit in there and was looking for something else, something to draw him away from the sad cycles of addiction and conformity he saw all around him. Mark’s salvation came in the form of the nascent punk scene. A few years later, Mark found himself in Washington, DC where harDCore reigned supreme and the scene was eating itself alive. Then came Revolution Summer, where committed members of the scene — many of whom, like Mark, were frustrated with the state of affairs both in the scene and in the world — came together to create a new, engaged scene. In our long interview, originally conducted in two parts in the same day, we talk about Mark’s upbringing, his discovery of punk (most critically, The Clash), coming to DC, straight edge, Revolution Summer, Positive Force DC, coming to the Catholic Faith, social activism, the We Are Family organization that reaches out to elderly people, and much more. In one of the best interviews of this project, Mark talks frankly about many subjects he’s never been interviewed about and he earnestly approaches all subjects with a rare and raw sensitivity. For more information about the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene, I recommend the following books: Banned In DC: Photos and Anecdotes From the DC Punk Underground (79-95) by Cynthia Connolly (1988) Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital by Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins (2001) And these documentaries: Positive Force: More Than A Witness; 30 Years of Punk Politics In Action directed by Robin Bell (2011) Salad Days: A Decade of Punk In Washington, DC directed by Scott Crawford (2014) Positive Force DC We Are Family The post LOUD! Meet Mark Williams - Founder and CEO, Pensar IT Imagine being in business for +20 years, growing your ‘business baby’ into a success story, and now having the opportunity to plan for your own exit strategy. In all honesty, isn’t that what business should be about? I think it is. Yet so many business owners/entrepreneurs don’t achieve that goal. They remain a slave to their business for much of their lives, often with few options remaining towards the end of their career. Meet Mark Williams, the Founder and CEO of Pensar IT. He’s substantially grown his business over the last 20 years, through good times and bad. In recent years, he’s also had a business coach/mentor who injected rocket fuel into the leadership team and now the business is reaping the benefits; it’s even more successful than he’d imagined it could be. While Mark loves the work he does, he’s also in a phase of life where he can start planning his own exit strategy, and he is. During our conversation, Mark tells many of the business ‘war stories’ he managed through to get the business to where it is today - his business success story. I hope you are inspired by Mark’s journey and success in business. Enjoy. While Mark is away doing super important family activities and other cool summer things, I decided to keep the recordings alive until his return which I hope will be very soon. So the next series of podcasts will be about a wide array of topics, from Matisse to the use of crochet in art. Each episode will be short, 7 minute podcasts about stuff I like, artists I admire, things I like about art. I know you miss Mark, I do as well, but he shall return very soon.
While Mark is away, Chris and Seth turn the show over to the listeners for another Listener Feedback show!

3rd Sunday of Lent Fr. Daniel Kelley homily. Now into the third week of the Season of Lent, our Sunday Gospel prepares us to hear Lent's call to conversion and repentance. Today's reading is found in the chapters of Luke's Gospel that describe Jesus' journey to Jerusalem. During this journey, Jesus teaches and heals. He must also respond to those who question and challenge his authority and actions. There is no parallel in Mark's or Matthew's Gospels for today's reading from Luke. While Mark and Matthew describe an incident in which Jesus curses the fig tree, today's reading makes the barren fig tree the subject of a parable. Fr. Daniel Kelley is the pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Arlington, TX

Get to know Mark, his background, and his entrepreneurial spirit like never before! Mark Sisson has been a great friend and mentor of mine for 30 years. As one of the founding fathers of the primal/paleo/keto/ancestral health movement, Mark has probably been on a couple hundred podcasts, including perhaps a dozen of our own for Primal Blueprint and Primal Endurance shows (listen to the very first Primal Blueprint podcast, published December 30, 2013, where he talks about the dangers of chronic cardio.) Since you can grab a lotta content on healthy eating and primal living from Mark with a push of button, we aspired to do something special with this conversation. Enjoy this lengthy and intimate conversation where Mark covers seldom heard life journey material starting from childhood and continuing to his present day role as a prominent health expert and entrepreneur. We rolled for a couple hours, and the end product is now destined to be archived for eternity in the Library of Congress as The Ultimate Mark Sisson Interview. If you know all about Mark as a longtime follower, this interview will give you a more complete picture than what’s offered by his public image. Even I was surprised to hear some of the details about his early years! If you’ve never heard of this blond guy, you will enjoy a fascinating account of the wild and wacky journey of a born entrepreneur and intense competitor. You will reflect on the importance of trusting your gut, never giving up on your dreams, taking action rather than just talking a good game, and honoring your basic nature (whether you’re risk averse or are repeatedly called to grand ambitions.) The show begins with a check-in about Mark’s surprise 2018 relocation from Malibu to Miami. He loves the warm water and the awesome restaurants, and the Ultimate Frisbee games are just as hard-core as in Malibu! Then we take the narrative back to his childhood in a small fishing village in Maine. A fascinating insight about the genetics and disposition of a born entrepreneur prevails throughout the conversation. From day one, this guy has shown industriousness, vision, and a fearless competitive drive that has led him to pursue ambitious goals, keep going when others might give up, and change direction on a dime when most would stay the course on the comfortable beaten path. As a pre-teen, Mark harbored a desire to “participate in the economy,” so he built a thriving lawn mowing business in the summer. Feeling restless midway through high school, Mark took the initiative to apply to the prestigious Philips-Exeter Academy prep school in Exeter, NH. Yes, this place is a legit, boasting a billion dollar endowment and an alumni list featuring 19 US Senators, a US President (Pierce), a Mark Zuckerberg face, Dan Brown of DaVinci Code fame, and Mark Sisson of Primal Kitchen fame. While Mark showed some early promise as a big fish distance runner in the small pond of Maine, he experienced a breakthrough in confidence and performance after an epic Outward Bound summer experience on an island off the coast of Maine. He excelled at Philips-Exeter in academics and athletics and was off to Williams College (often ranked as the #1 liberal arts school in the nation) to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. You’ll start to notice a recurring theme in the story: numerous pivots and redirections from even the best-laid plans. Mark’s medical school ambitions were detoured by a random knock on the door of his dorm room by a nostalgic Williams alum who had occupied the same room. The alum was so amazed by what he saw inside he challenged Mark on the spot to second-guess med school and pursue other passions. No, it was not a jacuzzi and live band party setup that Rodney Dangerfield created in the movie Back To School …I guess you will have to listen to the show to discover the details. Indeed, Mark’s entrepreneur gene was in full bloom even in college. He became such a skilled house painter that he was making what most would consider an excellent annual salary in a few summer months of wielding a mean paintbrush. Forget scaffolding, just race up and down a ladder all day like a marathon runner, and paint with the dexterity of a gymnast, to finish houses in a fraction of the time a professional crew could. With med school plans on hold, Mark headed out to Northern California to pursue his dream of qualifying for the US Olympic trials in the marathon. He had some fantastic success as an endurance athlete, running a 2:18 marathon (5 th in the national championships), but overuse injuries ended his career before he could even participate in the 1980 Olympic trials. Mark had a fabulous swan song as an elite athlete when he moved over to the sport of triathlon. With running injuries managed on account of swimming and cycling sharing the training load, Mark gained competency quickly and placed 4 th in the Hawaii Ironman world championships in 1982. Since Mark’s endurance career predated the days where elite athletes could earn a decent living, he was hustling all the while in the background. He operated a thriving frozen yogurt shop in Palo Alto, CA, custom-built a restaurant featuring the world’s first refrigerated salad bar, and did more house painting and construction work. In the mid-80’s, Mark chased a new dream, heading to Los Angeles in hopes of becoming a sportscaster. This entailed immersion into the model slash actor slash personal trainer scene in LA, and Mark soon emerged as a top trainer and health expert. Mark and I first met back in 1988. There was a newly-formed team of professional triathletes, and Mark was enlisted to coach us. His methods were revolutionary at the time, when he argued for athletes to avoid the chronic training patterns that led to breakdown, burnout, illness and injury. Instead, he told us take it easy at many workouts and focus on the occasional “breakthrough” workout where you could push yourself enough to break through to a higher fitness level. Mark was ahead of his time with these insights, as the prevailing approach to endurance training was to grind out as many miles as possible and hope to avoid injury or breakdown. Mark’s own breakdown experience as a marathoner had prompted his awakening to a more sensible way of training. Mark would prove the value of his approach by occasionally jumping into high profile races or competitive workouts and hanging with professional level athletes, despite training minimally while pursuing a full time career as a personal trainer and nutrition consultant. Mark also did consulting work to design nutritional supplements for various companies, and became the central figure in the first anti-doping organizational efforts in triathlon. In 1990, Mark was invited to serve as Executive Director of the national triathlon federation out in Colorado Springs, CO. After a few years of growing the sport wildly, Mark returned to LA to embark upon a lucrative career in the nutritional supplement world. Yes, here as Mark humming along, making a great living and raising two young children with his wife Carrie. Alas, the entrepreneurial gene switched on again, and Mark decided to leave his cush position to plunge into debt and uncertainty, strike out on his own, and develop the world’s most comprehensive multivitamin, mineral, antioxidant, anti-stress supplement formula, aptly named Damage Control Master Formula. The venture became an immediate success, and Mark quickly ascended into the role of vitamin king living at the top of the hill in Malibu. Yes, this operation was dialed, with only a handful of employees and millions in revenue, mostly from a single product with a high profit margin. This gave Mark plenty of time to work on his golf game, to no avail. His grain-based diet causing hand arthritis was a worthy excuse. Seriously, but we digress… Mark “fed the beast” (his term, not mine. Love it!) by hopping on a plane to Dallas every two weeks to tape a couple talk shows that were broadcast across the Bible belt to viewers whom apparently desperately needed the world’s best vitamin by “calling now” to the number on the TV screen. Alas, the infomercial era ended with a big giant thud. With the beast starting to get hungry, Mark blew a million bucks trying to keep the dream alive by producing dozens of episodes of his own TV show, which he quickly pulled the plug on before most of them ever aired (wouldn’t you love to see these now on YouTube?). At this point, now 2006, Mark turned his attention to something called blogging. The launch of MarksDailyApple.com was inauspicious. After a year of devoted effort and a six-figure investment in the team and infrastructure, MarksDailyApple.com was pulling in a whopping 1,000 readers a day. Staying true to his values and vision despite the stress and anxiety of declining sales, Mark and his team stayed the course, cranking out great content without polluting the message with supplement marketing. Over time, Marks Daily Apple readership continued to grow exponentially. The publication of The Primal Blueprint in 2009 was another watershed moment, as the reception was excellent and served as a catalyst for the overall explosion of the primal/paleo/ancestral health movement. Funny now, but Mark was turned down flat by many big time New York publishers when he pitched The Primal Blueprint. The prevailing rejection theme was that Mark was not an MD so he lacked the necessary credibility. True to form, Mark decided to self-publish and sell the book out of the Malibu warehouse—about as far away as you can get from the big time publishers on Madison Avenue! Indeed, once upon a time you could only find The Primal Blueprint for sale at Primal Blueprint.com. As we reach the final decade up to present day, Mark covers the crazy explosive growth of his enterprise, and the consequent challenges and complexities this brought. You will be inspired by his well-placed enthusiasm and resolve to stay true to his vision despite challenges. #ListentotheSisson carefully and notice the difference between someone spewing shallow positive affirmations versus someone who faces the day with a healthy but realistic competitive intensity, a willingness to fail and grow stronger accordingly, and an emphasis on leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle. It is here, with his “Live Awesome” ethos, that Mark distinguishes himself from many narrowly-focused peak performers who succeed on a material level but neglect health, fitness, family life, or being kind in the process. While we didn’t discuss this in the show, “pivot” is Mark’s favorite word to describe the necessary skills and disposition to succeed in a competitive environment and be happy in general life. You have to keep moving and growing as a person, adjust to uncertainty and setbacks without falling apart, and generally becoming skilled at pivoting to take what life gives you in good spirit.
